New InstallAware 7 Brings the Convenience of Obviousness to Windows Installer Setup Authoring

InstallAware 7 is the Visual Basic of software installers, making it easy for non-specialists to create powerful, compelling Windows Installer setup packages with automatic Vista Certified logo compliancy.

San Francisco, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/26/2007 -- InstallAware Software Corporation has released InstallAware 7, a setup authoring tool for ISVs and enterprises deploying products, patches, and web updates. InstallAware 7 creates Windows Installer setup packages with support for the latest technologies, including Microsoft .NET 3.0, Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, and 64 bit operating systems.

InstallAware takes a novel approach to building Windows Installer setup packages. Instead of having developers face the internals of Windows Installer – such as multiple interconnected database tables, complex component authoring rules, error-prone custom action programming, and sequencing – InstallAware presents a human readable, self-descriptive script called MSIcode, which spells out line by line each setup action to be taken, along with their associated conditions. Regardless of how the MSIcode script is authored, InstallAware always produces a "Vista Certified" logo compliant, stand-alone MSI file. This results in tremendous savings on what would normally be extensive training and development costs for getting up to speed with Windows Installer technology. Even non-programmers find it very easy to create sophisticated setups with InstallAware, calling this ease of use "the convenience of obviousness".

In addition to being a language that describes how to create MSI packages, MSIcode also extends Windows Installer technology with branching code flow capabilities. This makes it possible to create intelligent setups with runtime decision making capabilities not available before. Allen Bauer, Chief Scientist at CodeGear (formerly Borland), says of their recent switch to InstallAware: "Using MSIcode, we have drastically reduced the need for creating custom plug-ins. Our InstallAware setup dynamically defines the features and files to be installed. Instead of building, maintaining, and shipping separate installers for all the languages, IDEs, and product editions that we offer, we are now able to build and deliver a single install image. This has dramatically reduced our integration workload along with reducing our costs."

The new InstallAware 7 IDE is the first setup authoring toolkit to utilize the Ribbon UI, fully leveraged to highlight the core differentiating features of InstallAware. The Design tab consists of over 30 design views, which enable developers to visually build their software installer. This tab is similar to the graphical editors found in most other setup authoring tools. However, as developers work on the Design tab, the IDE automatically emits and updates MSIcode script in the background. Switching to the MSIcode tab reveals the full setup script, which can be customized and edited in any way necessary. Changes made in the MSIcode tab are reflected back in the Design tab, making two-way integrated editing possible, tremendously multiplying developer productivity, and positioning InstallAware as the Visual Basic of software installers, with its visual design and automatic code generation capabilities.

Among other time and money saving InstallAware features are, up to 67% smaller setup packages, the ability to serve unlimited web updates without any fees or royalties, building setups with partially web deployed segments (such as for application runtimes), a one-click patch authoring process which builds binary patches simply by referencing old installer versions, full support for all Windows versions from the original release of Windows 95 Gold to the latest 64 bit version of Windows Vista Ultimate, fully customizable dialogs, interactive HTML or Flash content as progress billboards, custom Vista Aero Glass regions, and unattended deployment via Active Directory Group Policy or other network deployment technologies.

InstallAware is available in four editions, with prices starting at US$199. A time limited trial and more information is available at http://www.installaware.com/.

InstallAware Only Installation Toolkit to Support Vista Glass

The Easy Way to Build Vista Certified Windows Installers with Aero Glass

San Francisco, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/09/2007 -- InstallAware Software Corporation has released InstallAware 6.5, a setup authoring tool targeting Microsoft's Windows Installer platform. With version 6.5, InstallAware becomes the only installer to provide native support for the new Aero user interface in Windows Vista. Developers can now create custom Glass surfaces on their install wizard screens, taking full advantage of Windows Vista's Aero features, and delivering the best user experience on Windows Vista.

"While Windows Vista is Microsoft's best-selling operating system to date, there are just about 100 Vista Certified applications available," says Lemuel Haham, President of InstallAware Software Corporation. "InstallAware 6.5 should help with that. You can build an installer any way you like in InstallAware – and the end result will always be a bullet-proof, Vista certifiable MSI setup package. This should save ISVs and software developers across the world countless hours – both in trying to learn about the logo requirements and complying with them. With InstallAware, it's automatic."

InstallAware 6.5 includes improvements and optimizations across the board. Another time saving benefit is the new Multi-Core Compression. "With hardware evolving so fast, why let your software hold you down?" says Andy Neillans, Program Manager at InstallAware. "Most applications today use only a single CPU core, whereas most machines ship with 2, sometimes 4 CPU cores. Any time you build a setup package in InstallAware, we use all your available CPU cores. This linearly doubles performance as more cores are added. A machine with 4 cores will build in a quarter of the time it takes to build on a single core machine. And because InstallAware is the only multi-core installation authoring environment today, it is safe to say that InstallAware builds setups two to four times faster than other authoring tools."

"We're focused on one thing – making the lives of developers easier," adds Lemuel Haham. "InstallAware is a software installer built by developers for developers – and it shows. Once again, we're first to market with ground breaking features, this time offering automatic Vista Certification, Aero Glass support, and multi-core compression."

InstallAware 6 is available in various editions, with prices starting at US$199. A time limited trial and more information is available at www.installaware.com.

CodeGear Moves to InstallAware

Newly formed CodeGear (tm) chooses InstallAware for delivering the newest versions of Delphi®, Delphi® for .NET, C++ Builder®, and C# Builder® tools. InstallAware Express is now bundled with CodeGear’s developer products as the installer tool of choice.

San Francisco, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/08/2007 -- CodeGear, formerly the Borland® Developer Tools Group, is now using InstallAware in the upcoming new versions of CodeGear's legendary developer tools, including Delphi® and C++ Builder®. A special developer edition of InstallAware Express will also be bundled with select CodeGear products, offering CodeGear developers free access to the latest in software installation technology.

"Just like CodeGear, InstallAware is all about developers," says Sinan Karaca, President of InstallAware. "InstallAware is revolutionizing the setup authoring space today, the same way Borland revolutionized software development in the 80's and 90's. We see a great deal of synergy in working with CodeGear: the same way TurboTM made programming fun for an entire generation, InstallAware makes setup development fun and enjoyable."

InstallAware features a two-way integrated IDE, employing the same RAD concepts found in the widely popular Delphi IDE. As developers visually design their setup, InstallAware creates code in the background automatically – the same way Delphi creates Pascal code as components are dropped onto a form. When developers want to fine-tune their setup, they just switch to the MSIcode view, which is InstallAware's high-level script describing all the setup actions carried out at runtime. The InstallAware compiler then converts this high-level MSIcode script into a logo-certifiable, standards-compliant Windows Installer MSI package. The developer doesn't have to know anything about the underlying Windows Installer technology. Working with MSIcode requires no programming skills, unlike error-prone custom action authoring or database work, which are otherwise staples of Windows Installer based setup engineering.

While other installation tools also offer scripting, these scripts run separately from the main setup; this makes it very difficult to build powerful setups with intelligent decision making at runtime. "Using InstallAware's MSIcode, we have drastically reduced the need for creating custom plugi-ns," says Allen Bauer, Chief Scientist at CodeGear. "Our InstallAware setup dynamically defines the features and files to be installed. Instead of building, maintaining, and shipping separate installers for all the languages, IDEs, and product editions that we offer, we are now able to build and deliver a single install image. This has dramatically reduced our integration workload along with reducing our costs."

"Electronic software delivery (ESD) will be playing a larger role in the way we deliver our products going forward. InstallAware will be powering our new ESD functionality in the Delphi and C++Builder products," adds Michael Swindell, Vice President of Products at CodeGear. "We will be able to increase internet delivery flexibility and performance providing customers with instant access to features based on electronic software purchases. Our goal is to make the user experience for both trial evaluations and electronic purchases as simple and flexible as possible. We evaluated a variety of installation and delivery technologies and InstallAware had the right features, performance, and technology for our requirements."

CodeGear benefits from other InstallAware-exclusive features. Partial Web Deployment enables users to download an independent setup that works without forcing an Internet connection, while still retaining the capability to download optional components from the web at runtime. LZMA compression produces setup packages typically 30%-50% smaller than Windows Installer's native CAB compression. A streamlined prerequisite installer processes all technology frameworks (such as Microsoft.NET) as part of the main install routine, without launching individual and confusing setup windows for each runtime component.

InstallAware is available in four editions, with prices starting at US$199. A time limited trial and more information is available at http://www.installaware.com/.

InstallAware Is First to Market With a Tool Targeting Microsoft's Open Source WiX Platform for Building Windows Installe (MSI) Software Installers

InstallAware Launches WiXAware, the First (and only) IDE for Microsoft WiX.

San Francisco, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/10/2007 -- InstallAware Software Corporation has launched WiXAware, the first and only commercial IDE for building software installers based on Microsoft's WiX (Windows Installer XML) technology. WiX is known as being Microsoft's first open source project, and contains a command line compiler and linker for parsing XML source files and building Windows Installer setup packages. Internal Microsoft teams use WiX to build world-class installers, such as the Microsoft Office installer. However, the native WiX toolkit as maintained by Microsoft and the open source community is purely command line, which can make it difficult to work with. Until today, there was no industry-strength IDE for WiX.

"Our customers demanded a simpler way to work with WiX projects, and we delivered," says Agustin Berge, Director of Development at InstallAware. "Formerly industry leading brands like InstallShield or Wise have yet to release a WiX tool, despite the overwhelming demand for a WiX IDE. We have beaten both these companies to market with our WiXAware tool, the first commercial-grade IDE that makes using WiX second nature."

The WiXAware IDE features two main views. The first of these is an XML editor, full with modern conveniences such as code completion, code folding, syntax highlighting, multi level undo/redo, and intelligent tool tips. This dedicated XML editor enhances productivity by recognizing all WiX language elements, suggesting and auto-completing WiX tags, and accelerating the coding cycle.

The second view of the WiXAware IDE is called the design view, and parses the underlying XML project into a completely visual presentation. Similar to programming languages like Visual Basic and C#, where applications are rapidly prototyped using drag-drop controls on visual design surfaces, WiXAware lets developers use any of the 23 pre-built design views to generate XML code. Software installer settings such as files to install, shortcuts to create, and so on can be designed visually, with the WiXAware IDE automatically generating the underlying XML source code for WiX. Any existing WiX XML source code file may be opened in the WiXAware IDE, and inspected/updated visually.

The developer has complete freedom in switching between these two main IDE views, and both the designers and the XML source code are always kept in sync. "WiXAware is the only IDE to offer visual dialog editing for WiX at this time," adds Berge. "This complex task is made much easier by using our visual form editor, which of course emits the necessary WiX code automatically in the background. Our IDE also features other helpful tools and wizards, such as a Custom Action wizard. Another inherently difficult Windows Installer challenge is solved using our step-by-step Custom Action wizard, which again produces the correct WiX XML code seamlessly."

"In keeping with the InstallAware tradition, we are once again launching a disruptive innovation," says Simon King, CEO of InstallAware Software Corporation. "When we first released InstallAware in 2004, it was unmatched in its features like partial web deployment, MSIcode scripting for Windows Installer, and 50% better compression. While our competition has yet to respond to these innovations introduced almost three years ago, we are taking our offerings to the next level, and offering a brand-new IDE for WiX. Now developers will be able to use the same technology that Microsoft uses to build their own software installers internally."

WiXAware is available today for immediate online ordering, priced at $499 for new users, and at $349 for users upgrading from InstallShield or Wise tools. A 30 day time limited trial and more information is available at www.wixaware.com.
