As reported by Business Insider, Guillaume Rambourg's new long/short equity hedge fund, Verrazzano Capital might be the biggest hedge fund launch of the year.

Rambourg comes from the formerly huge ~$6.5 billion British hedge fund Gartmore, which used to have 2 star portfolio managers: Rambourg and Roger Guy.

Then they suspended Rambourg. It all went downhill from there — for Gartmore.

For Guillaume on the other hand, just wait and see. The fund experienced over $1 billion in redemptions when he left, and his new fund, named for the bridge where the New York Marathon begins, expects to raise ~$1 billion. He plans to launch in Paris with Karim Moussalem, who was made a managing director in 2007 and was the head of cash trading at Goldman Sachs, and left the US investment bank after almost a decade for a senior investment role.

As reported by Reuters, hedge funds posted their worst returns in three years in the third quarter, and the fourth quarter appears to be off to an equally rocky start.

For hedge funds around the world, the average loss was 5.02 percent in the three months ended Sept. 28, according to Hedge Fund Monitor, a report compiled by analysts with Bank of America.

Not since the third quarter of 2008, when the global financial system ground to a halt and hedge funds posted an average decline of 9.48 percent, has the $2 trillion industry performed so poorly.

Many savvy money managers were badly bruised by August's vicious market sell-off, and September brought no reprieve. The report said the average hedge fund loss was 2.31 percent last month as concern mounted about the European debt crisis and commodities from gold to corn nose-dived.

Still, hedge funds outperformed the Standard and Poor's 500 index, which lost 5.56 percent in September. Through Monday, the index was down 12.6 percent for the year.

As reported in The Wall Street Journal, some of the world's largest hedge funds are finally seeing their bearish bets pay off as markets struggle.

Brevan Howard Asset Management LLP, one of Europe's biggest hedge-fund firms with $34 billion in assets, is up nearly 13% in its flagship fund this year as of Sept. 23, according to a person close to the fund. The outsize gains—a rarity in a difficult year for hedge funds and much better than the loss of nearly 10% for the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index in the same period—are partly because of the London-based firm's cautious approach to riskier investments tied to global economic growth.

Caxton Associates LP's $6.8 billion Global Investments Limited Fund, run by Andrew Law—who takes the helm of the $9.1 billion firm next year—is up 0.67% this year through Oct. 3, after being down 3.25% at the end of May, said a person close to the firm. The Global Investments fund rose 2.73% in August, 2.69% in September and is up 0.4% so far this month.

The Caxton fund's "main gains over the past two months or so have been from trades benefiting from falling growth expectations," this person said. Among the winning trades: Negative bets on interest rates in Brazil and developed-world markets, bearish positions on gold and base metals, and a wager that the dollar would rise against emerging-market and developed-world currencies.

As reported in The Wall Street Journal, Tumblr has scant revenue and a nascent business model, but the fast-growing blogging service said it raised $85 million in venture capital. The investment values the company at $800 million, said people familiar with the matter.

The funding round highlights a continuing interest in promising new technology companies despite concerns about the economy at large. The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Tumblr was poised to raise $75 million to $100 million in a round that put the company at $800 million.

So far Tumblr's lack of revenue has kept some major Silicon Valley venture firms from signing onto the deal, according to people familiar the matter. But at least two prominent firms—Greylock Partners, an investor in Facebook Inc. and Groupon Inc., and Twitter investor Insight Venture Partners—have joined the latest investment round, said Tumblr.

Other new investors include Chernin Group, Richard Branson and returning investor partners Spark Capital, Union Square Ventures and Sequoia Capital.

In recent venture capital news, Kepha Partners reported Monday that its second venture capital fundraiser is well on its way to completion, with $73.7 million raised out of a targeted $100 million.

Manoj Narang, Founder and CEO of Tradeworx, Inc., raises a compelling argument against the idea that high-frequency trading precipitates market volatility. In his editorial for The High Frequency Trading Review, he acknowledges that volatility of the S&P 500 increased since 2007. But he doesn't feel HFT is to blame. The foundation of his argument is a set of statistics, which compares the volatility in afterhours trading to the volatility during normal trading hours.

According to Narang, in the period of 2000 through 2006, the S&P 500 moved an average of 0.37 percent per day when the market was closed. Since 2007, afterhours trading increased 65 percent, pushing the average to 0.61 percent per day.

Narang suggests that the "abundance of news which has caused investors to panic" greatly increased since 2006. Narang adds that volatility during trading hours only increased 12 percent since 2006. Narang feels that, logically, this can only lead to one conclusion – that increases in media exposure and access to the markets causes volatility, rather than HFT.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/29/2011 -- As reported by Nikeei.com, rapid-fire buy and sell orders by hedge funds and other heavyweight investors have no net effect on prices, the Tokyo Stock Exchange said Tuesday in its first-ever study of the impact of high-frequency trading. The findings serve as a rebuttal to the depiction of this computerized trading strategy as a market-skewing villain.

For its study, the TSE defined high-frequency trading as orders placed through its co-location service, which handles about 30% of stock trading on the exchange. The study found that, when the U.S. sovereign credit downgrade sent the market on a wild ride Aug. 9, high-frequency orders were about evenly divided between buying and selling for around 90% of the components of the Nikkei Stock Average. The same proved true for 90% or more of the Nikkei 225 on low-volatility days.

The TSE's equities division concludes that high-frequency trading is not responsible for "transactions that have an influence on stock price formation."

"We are far from understanding the potential global systemic instability that is associated today with the sheer size of the non-banking sector which experienced an exponential growth over the last 20 years," Trichet said on the eve of a meeting of euro-area finance ministers seeking to tackle the region's debt crisis. "I would call all of us to better understand this aspect of the global financial dynamics."

The role of high-frequency firms in periods of market swings has come under scrutiny since the May 6, 2010, crash that briefly erased $862 billion from U.S. share values. Traders and other professional investors were said to have withdrawn bids as the selloff worsened, according to a Sept. 30 report from the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Regulators and exchanges later installed curbs to limit market disruptions.
