Oldcastle Precast Helps Construct Green Affordable Housing for Families in Need

Oldcastle Precast provided structural precast concrete building components for the new development at Forest Houses in New York. It is part of the largest municipal housing plan in the nation

Bronx, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/29/2012 -- As part of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's $7.5 billion New Housing Marketplace Plan to provide affordable housing for 500,000 New Yorkers, Oldcastle Precast provided structural precast concrete building components for the new development at Forest Houses in New York. It is part of the largest municipal housing plan in the nation.

The development at Forest House is a "green" and energy saving designed, precast concrete building, manufactured by Oldcastle Precast, containing 124 affordable units available to households making 60% of the AMI or less. The 109,000 square foot building also contains a superintendent's unit, landscaped open space, and 43 underground parking spaces under the first level and features a unique rooftop, commercial greenhouse that will yield 80,000 to 100,000 pounds of fresh produce a year and be distributed to residents and local markets in the Bronx.

Oldcastle Precast, using their expertise in precast concrete structures, manufactured 136,162 square feet of precast concrete hollow core plank for the floors and roof, which was specifically design to handle the unique load of a roof top greenhouse and 70,000 square feet of precast concrete wall panels to construct an energy efficient building envelope for the eight-story Forest House Development building. The exterior precast walls were cast with Glen-Gery thin-brick and sandblast type finish (via form liner) with colored concrete to provide a comprehensive exterior finish.

In addition to the housing structure, Oldcastle Precast manufactured and installed their Storm Capture® Water Reuse System. The Storm Capture Reuse System included special Storm Capture retention tanks that handle approximately 16,000 gallons of captured water and an equipment package that treats the captured water making it available for irrigation to the roof-mounted hydroponic greenhouse, providing another unique feature to this environmentally friendly project.

This is the 5th total precast concrete building solution that Blue Sea Development, the developer, and Oldcastle Precast have worked together on in the past 10 years. Oldcastle Precast worked closely with Blue Sea and ABS Architects, the project architect, during the design phase to develop a cost effective solution that met all of the project requirements.

The development team consists of Blue Sea Development Co., Blue Sea Construction Co., LLC, ABS Architects and TY Lyn International- engineering firm. The team was selected due to its history of developing quality affordable housing that is both attractive & sustainable. The Project is scheduled for completion December 2012 and is seeking LEED certification.

3,000 Foot Pipeline for Lemolo No. 2 Hydroelectric Development Project

Oldcastle Precast, Supplies 3,000 foot pipeline for Lemolo No. 2 Hydroelectric Development Project

Littleton, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/04/2011 -- Oldcastle Precast, of Nampa, Idaho supplied 3,000 feet of precast concrete pipe, elbow, transition pieces and manholes for the out-flow pipe and the in-flow pipe of PacifiCorp's Lemolo No. 2 tailrace re-routing project in Douglas County, Oregon . PacifiCorp, a PacifiCorp Company, was required to reroute the Lemolo No. 2 powerhouse discharge to Toketee Reservoir in accordance with the North Umpqua Settlement Agreement Section 5.4. After a seven-year design process, construction of PacifiCorp's Lemolo No. 2 tailrace re-routing project is almost complete.

Oldcastle Precast provided a 108" diameter concrete pipeline that transitioned into 96" diameter concrete pipe and then back into 108" concrete pipe. The pipe is t-lok lined pipe in portions to meet hydraulic design criteria. The precast concrete pipe was manufactured in 12 foot lay lengths with numerous custom castings. The pipeline makes multiple turns and grade changes. Inlet and outlet pieces were poured with steel rings cast into the pipe to allow connection to a cast in place head wall. In addition, Oldcastle Precast supplied three T-Top manhole pipe sections, each having a 48" manhole cast into the pipe section for access to the pipeline.

The Lemolo No. 2 tailrace re-routing project consists of in-water construction of the cofferdam for the inlet and an outlet structure. To stay on schedule, they built from both ends. The 3000 feet of pipe was buried along the Toketee-Rigdon road and across the Toketee recreation area. The pipe will carry 700 cfs from the Lemolo 2 plant tailrace and eliminate ramping in the Lemolo 2 full flow reach of the North Umpqua River.

Weekly Brothers, Inc. is the general contractor overseeing the construction and McMillen LLC is the project engineer.

The project is scheduled for completion at the end of October, 2011.

Oldcastle Precast, Inc. Supplies Precast for All Precast Dormitory in New York

Oldcastle Precast, Inc. Supplying Precast Concrete Building Components for the University at Albany’s New 500 Bed All Precast Concrete Dormitory.

Littleton, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/03/2011 -- The State University of New York (SUNY) - Albany is constructing a new $60 million, all precast concrete, 500 bed apartment-style dormitory on the southeast portion of the Uptown campus, named "Liberty Terrace". The Liberty Terrace complex will be located east of the pond behind Indian Quad adjacent to the Boor Sculpture Studio.

Oldcastle Precast, Inc – Building Systems Division was awarded the precast concrete elements for the new 180,000 square-foot dormitory complex, one of SUNY's first total precast concrete dormitories ever constructed. The project involves the construction of two buildings, each 5 stories tall, with 250 bedrooms in each building. All apartments are 4 bedroom apartments with 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen and living/dining room area. There will be a community center with a fitness center, lounges, and meeting rooms

"Oldcastle Precast is responsible for the precast concrete design and engineering of the precast dormitory structure and manufacturing and installation of the precast concrete elements. Precast concrete was chosen for its versatility, durability, and speed of installation which allows for a short term construction period", stated Aaron Fink, Regional Sales Engineer for Oldcastle Precast Building Systems.
The contract requires Oldcastle Precast to supply 185,000 square feet of 8" & 10" Hollowcore precast concrete plank for the floor units, 95,000 square feet of exterior finished, insulated, load bearing precast wall panels, 52,000 SF of interior load bearing solid precast wall, as well as various precast stairs, landings, beams and lintels used in the construction of the dormitory buildings. Installation of the precast elements began in June and is slated to be complete by September of 2011.

This dormitory project is designed to achieve the LEED Gold Level. LEED stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design," meaning that this construction project will be environmentally friendly in a number of ways, incorporating features such as countless natural and sustainable elements, including permeable pavement, a green roof, rain gardens, daylight maximization, and the use of recycled and locally-sourced materials. The buildings will be heated and cooled through a geothermal (ground source heat pump) system using the constant temperature of the soils to moderate cooling and heating energy needs. The University is working with a grant from the United States Department of Energy for the design and installation of this eco-friendly mechanical system.

LeChase Construction Services is the general contractor for this project and teamed with PS & S Engineering, P.C., to design and construct the dormitory. The new apartments are slated to open in Fall 2012.

Special Solar Array Ballasted Footings Used for the Largest Solar Energy System in Northampton

Northampton, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/14/2011 -- Oldcastle Precast delivered 176 custom designed precast footings to Renewable Sales, LLC., a Massachusetts – based leading wholesale distributor of photovoltaic and solar thermal energy products to complete the construction of the largest photovoltaic solar system to date, in the city of Northampton, at the Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School.

The 108-kilowatt solar array, built on the school's old tennis courts, is composed of eighty-eight solar arrays which incorporate approximately 500-solar panels that will reduce energy use by 20 percent annually after its completion in September. The system's panels can be tilted at different angles to capture the most sunlight, depending on the time of year. Renewable Sales, LLC contracted Oldcastle Precast, Inc.-Rehoboth to custom manufacture the at-grade precast ballasted footings for their solar arrays.

Renewable Sales, LLC needed special footings to ground mount their solar arrays due to the ground conditions at the site. Oldcastle Precast, Inc. provided their precast expertise and custom designed an at-grade precast ballasted footing for Renewable Sales' GEMINI PV Ground Mount System. The ballasted footings are independent, precast concrete footings for ground mounted solar electrical systems. The GEMINI ballasted footings are engineered to work in virtually any location, environment or application conditions, including variations in wind speed, tilt angle, support and racking configuration, solar module size, weight, local design codes and project requirements.

This type of precast solar array foundation is designed for use in the most demanding solar panel applications where the panels need to be secured in unstable, environmentally sensitive, or impenetrable ground conditions or where a non- penetrating solution is required. These footings are also designed for relocation and reuse.

Due to the modular construction of the foundations and racking, the entire mounting system was constructed in two weeks, which is very impressive for an installation this size.

The roughly $500,000 project at Smith Vocational is being funded from two sources – 55 percent from a low-interest Clean Renewable Energy Bond and 45 percent from a state Green Communities grant. Earlier this year, the city qualified as a "Green Community," which enabled it to apply for grants to help with energy-efficiency and renewable-energy investment.
