Fire Protection Blankets for Motor Operated Valves (MOVs) and Actuators

Mitigate impact of fire on Motor Operated Valves

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/30/2023 -- Why Use Passive Fire Protection Blankets for Motor Operated Valves and Actuators?

In industries where high temperatures and fire risks are ever-present, safeguarding critical equipment from damage is paramount. To underscore the importance of fire safety, let's first look at some alarming fire risk facts:
- According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were approximately 1.3 million fires reported in the United States in 2020, resulting in 3,700 civilian deaths and $21.9 billion in property damage.
- Focusing on industrial fires, the NFPA reports that between 2011 and 2015, there were an estimated 37,910 fires in industrial and manufacturing properties, causing an annual average of 16 civilian deaths, 273 civilian injuries, and $1.2 billion in direct property damage.
- Fires in industrial settings can result from various causes, such as electrical malfunctions, mechanical friction, human error, or chemical reactions.

The benefits of Shannon's Rapid Rise Fire Blankets and how they can enhance your facility's fire safety measures.

Shannon Global Energy Solutions has developed a cutting-edge solution to protect your valuable assets and enhance your fire safety: the Rapid Rise Fire Blanket.

Fires produce intense heat and catastrophic issues for Motor Operated Valves (MOVs), valves and fittings, structural columns, process systems, cable trays and controls. Rapid Rise Fire Blankets from Shannon Global Energy Solutions, are a CAD Designed and Engineered insulation system designed to protect equipment from extreme temperatures, not exceeding 2000? F (1093? C)

Protecting equipment can give operators time to do proper mitigation procedures by extending the time in which the equipment can function under extreme heat conditions.

It is imperative in a fire situation to:
-	Limit the amount of material that can become involved.
-	Prevent failures of vessels, piping, structural steel and safety systems that could lead to more severe events.

The fundamental principles of process safety and fire safety should be applied to decrease the likelihood of a release, and to mitigate the consequences.

Meets and exceeds the UL1709 Rapid Rise Fire Test Method.

Shannon's Rapid Rise Fire Blanket Design FB2000MSSiSSiM and FB2000SSiSSi withstand a temperature of 2000°F rising within 5 minutes and maintain its integrity at this temperature until failure. The UL1709 Test Method demands a minimum duration of exposure of the equipment surface temperature, not to exceed 1000°F. Rapid Rise Fire Blankets not only withstand the minimum requirement of 30 minutes; under the current testing, they last over 3 hours before failure! The UL1709 test procedure has been the benchmark standard for many applications including structural columns, valve actuators, cable trays, instrumentation, valve bodies and more.

Flexible and easy to install, remove and reinstall, Shannon Fire Blankets provide quick access to equipment for inspection and maintenance. Blankets will accommodate vibration probes, gauges, tubing, piping, brackets, etc. and fit correctly for optimum performance. Industries include the Oil & Gas Industry, Offshore Platforms, Power Generation, Marine, Military & Defense, Chemical, and Petro Chemical Process.

The Cold Reality of Lake Effect Snow & Removing Natural Gas as a Utility

Battling Lake Effect Snow is One Matter, Removing Natural Gas as a Utility could be More Deadly

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/27/2023 -- There can be geographic challenges in Buffalo, New York, in western New York state. With Lake Erie to the West and Lake Ontario to the North, Buffalo and surrounding communities are blessed with lots of open water and then, in winter, the curse of "Lake Effect" squalls that sometimes plague the region with heavy snowfall. The heavy snowfall is sometimes measured in feet, not inches.

The blizzard that occurred from Friday, December 23rd to Sunday, December 25th, with record snowfall, record cold temperatures, high winds and record wind chill, crippled the region. The frigid cold resulted in power outages and extreme demand for utilities, to fuel home heating, cooking, hot water, and backup generator use. Not being prepared for this event, not having the supplies and or support, resulted in a death.

Natural gas, has been a big part of the solution, to heat homes and buildings, cook, produce hot water and to fuel the backup generator sets, when the electrical power failed. Natural gas was the true dependable utility. In many areas, the power outage lasted for 2 days, with temps in the single digits, wind chill temps in the minuses, houses were compromised with frozen pipes and extreme indoor cold. Homeowners, business owners and renters will be soon receiving record high utility bills because of the cold spell, many utility bills will influence a lifestyle change of either paying the bill or eating.

Realizing and accepting the value of natural gas as a reliable, dependable utility, is a bitter cold fact that needs more attention. People depend on natural gas because the electrical grid is often unreliable and getting more and more unreliable as electrical demand increases. New Yorkers should demand, affordable energy and they should demand accountability from law makers to drive responsible policy.

Ramifications of the Gas Transition & Affordable Energy Act and the All-Electric Buildings Act

As an example, be aware of the development of two unnecessary New York State bills, banning natural gas appliances from homes and commercial buildings. Two New York State senate bills, S8198 & S6843B otherwise known as the Gas Transition & Affordable Energy Act and the All-Electric Buildings Act. These pieces of legislation remove the use of fossil fuel as a utility and dramatically increase the cost of heating your home, forcing electrical service, replacing natural gas. You will see below, the impact of this crazy legislation.

Being a homeowner and/or business owner, one cannot imagine an all-electrical utility source, it would border on economic suicide. The current New York State average electricity rate is $0.2397/kWH (1 each kWH Kilowatt hour = 3,412.14 BTU's). The current New York State average gas utility rate is $0.95/Therm (a Therm = 100,000 BTU's).

Completing the conversions from kWH to Therms and using an average home bill of 102,800CF of Natural Gas Use (30,130kWH/Year of Electricity), converting from natural gas to electricity will rise from $1,321.32/year for Natural Gas to $7,222.32/year for electricity. That's a whopping $5,901.00 per year increase, for an average home.

This legislative law, conversion from Natural Gas to Electricity represents a 547% INCREASE, to achieve the same energy outcome. Electricity is not cheap! Keep in mind, the average electricity bill in New York is already $215/Month ($2,580/Year/1500 SF Home). Combine these two bills and the monthly utility rate EXPLODES to $816.86 from $325.11 currently. The average homeowner will have to pay out $491.75/Month, more because of this policy.

To put things in perspective, New York City has roughly 77 million SF of office space. The gas to electricity conversion will add a whopping $26 Million in utility costs. Utility costs, passed onto the tenants that pay rent.

With U.S. electricity prices surging, up 15% in 2022, more people than ever are struggling to pay their utility bills. Currently, 20 million Americans households have fallen behind. That's 1 out 6 homes and the amount owed has doubled since the beginning of the pandemic. Many states initiated shut off moratoriums which at some point, will end or in the case of New York State, ended last December. The result is an aggressive effort by utility companies to get paid, causing a tsunami of shut offs.

Sustainability and Natural Gas

Solving the problem of sustainability and reduced carbon emissions can still be achieved with the use of this great resource, called natural gas. In a recent Shannon GES article blog titled <a class="extlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" title=""Your Campus Carbon Footprint is Bigger Than You Think"" href="https://shannonglobalenergy.com/your-campus-carbon-footprint-is-bigger-than-you-think/">"Your Campus Carbon Footprint is Bigger Than You Think", natural gas use was the only reason why compliant college university campuses achieved their reduction goals on CO2. Natural Gas and modern technological improvements were the game changer for these campuses that invested in modern Natural Gas technology. The university campuses that did not invest, are polluting beyond industry norms with no regulation, no policy to drive change or improvement.

To put things in perspective, your electrical grid is sourcing electricity from power plants, burning natural gas & Oil (34% + 5%). Natural gas is already used in the mix of fuel sourcing to produce electricity. Hydro electric is finite, a fixed output, as well as Nuclear being fixed, so adding demand must come from either Renewable Energy (Sun, Wind, Geothermal), Natural Gas, Oil or Coal. Drawing electricity from a solar panel in the middle of the night, during a blizzard, is a bit of a challenge, and is highly unlikely.

The largest and most significant impact on energy use and carbon reduction will be energy efficiency. In the article, <a class="extlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" title=""Distilling the Facts to Save Energy and Reduce Emissions" href="https://shannonglobalenergy.com/distilling-the-facts-to-save-energy-and-reduce-emissions/">"Distilling the Facts to Save Energy and Reduce Emissions" the focus is on "Energy Conservation Through Insulation".

Finding ways to save energy can have the greatest impact on a CO2 reduction or a carbon reduction goal. The Global Commission for Urgent Action on Energy Efficiency states, on an international scale, energy efficiency (37%) as the most compelling influence on sustainability, with renewables trailing at 32%, other sources well behind.

Before we strip the landscape of natural gas as a viable utility in New York State, we need to ask the question, the most practical question to solve this problem. Why not incentivize energy conservation? Why not enhance or expand existing state and federal incentive programs that drive energy efficiency? The result will be far greater, with far greater financial impact on the average utility payer.
