Kurumba Maldives Makes in Roads in Their Social Responsibility Plans

Vihamanafushi, Republic of Maldives -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/20/2012 -- Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) has been making progress in their corporate social responsibility program. The key areas of their social responsibility plans are local orphanages support, environment, local arts and music and education.

In the last two weeks, there have been donations of equipment to the Villingilli and Maafushi orphanages. A fund raiser - called party with a difference - will be hosted on Kurumba on the 1st June 2012. There will be 8 bands, 3 DJ's and other entertainment. The day's entry fees, food and beverage stalls takings and silent auctions money will be used to purchase urgently required equipment for the Villingilli orphanage.

A waste management facility has been built on Kurumba that has greatly increased the recycling of plastics, glass, metal and aluminum. The glass is crushed and can be reused in cement for buildings. The plastic is shredded making it suitable for recycling plants and green waste is put through a mulcher for reuse in gardens. The recyclable goods are transferred to a recycling company in the Maldives.

Energy throughout the Maldives is created by diesel generators due to the stability of power required. Over the past year, Kurumba has made some vast improvements in reducing its energy consumption. There has been investment in more efficient guest rooms air conditioning and refrigeration; solar hot water systems; heat exchangers from the generators create hot water for the kitchen; LED lighting is now being used in higher consumption areas such as the kitchen, laundry and staff areas; lower power consuming water pumps were purchased to use in our desalination plant; and a computerized generator management system has been purchased to assist us with managing energy loads. This has resulted in an average saving of 15,000 liters of diesel per month over the past three months.

Education and development of the team is playing an important role. In January 2012, Kurumba announced the signing of 2 Maldivian Management Trainees. The purpose of this program is to develop more Maldivian managers within the industry. The program selects two high potential employees from within Kurumba and allows them to complete a 12 month program where they will work in every department within the resort in order to improve their overall understanding and knowledge.

Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) has commenced a national accreditation program for its Food and Beverage staff. This program commenced on the 1st March 2012 and the training will last 6 months. Ten team members are currently enlisted in this program whom will be trained and assessed during this period. The accreditation will provide team members with National Certificates in Food and Beverage.

The General Manager of Kurumba Maldives has stated: "We are proud of how far we have come with our corporate social responsibility programs. Whilst we understand there is some way to go, we see many changes that are making for positive change in this area. Our momentum is in the right direction and I do believe that Kurumba Maldives is well on the way to be known to be socially responsible".

Kurumba Maldives will be launching a new webpage in the coming weeks highlighting these areas including a list of urgent items required for the orphanages.

Fantastic Photo Competition As Kurumba Maldives Commemorates 40 Years

Vihamanafushi, Republic of Maldives -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/05/2012 -- Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/), the first resort in the Indian Ocean archipelago of the Maldives, celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year.

Opened by four young Maldivians on an uninhabited coconut plantation island in October 1972, Kurumba (it means coconut) marked the beginning of the tourist industry in the country. At that time the Maldives was isolated with limited contact with the outside world and no telephones, mains electricity or water, few vehicles and no paved roads, and only a small airstrip built by volunteers.

Kurumba began with 30 huts built of coral and thatched with coconut leaves; the first guests were barefoot backpackers in search of sand, sea and sun. Meals were prepared informally by the Maldivian hosts. Today the resort is still Maldivian owned and managed, with 180 luxurious accommodation units, including a Royal Residence, Presidential Suites and Pool Villas (http://www.kurumba.com/acc-pool.html), and eight gourmet-class restaurants.

About 1,000 tourists visited the island in 1972; in 2011 some 850,000 tourists stayed in over 100 resorts through the Maldives.

To commemorate the progress of Kurumba and tourism in the Maldives over 40 years, the resort has announced a photo competition with the closing date for submissions as 31 March 2012. Photographs should show some aspect of Kurumba during the past 40 years.

The prize for the winning photograph is a seven-night stay for up to two adults and 2 children at Kurumba Maldives in a Pool Villa, with daily champagne breakfast, dine around all inclusive meal plan, two Veli Spa signature treatments, a sunset cruise and return transfers between the resort and Male' International Airport. Full details on www.facebook.com/kurumbamaldives

Submissions will be available from the 15th February 2012 and the competition will conclude on April 7th 2012. Due to legal requirements, entrants must be from the United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, United States and D.C., Maldives, Australia, New Zealand or Canada.

A series of events to celebrate the resort's Ruby Anniversary will be held at Kurumba beginning on 27 September and culminating in a black tie dinner on 3 October 2012. Special packages for the anniversary week are available through reservations@kurumba.com

Kurumba Maldives Announces 40 Activities to Celebrate Its 40th year's Anniversary

Vihamanafushi, Republic of Maldives -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/05/2012 -- The team of Kurumba are proud to announce that we will be turning 40 years on the 3rd October 2012.

Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) will be celebrating its Ruby Birthday by holding 40 activities in 2012. These activities will align with current Corporate Social Responsibility projects as well as celebrating past guests, previous challenges and successes. A formal black tie dinner will be hosted on the 3rd October 2012 with a number of celebrities, media, key past guests, owners, personalities and staff all on the invite list. During the evening there will be presentations and evening entertainment.

Kurumba was constructed in 1972 on the uninhabited island of Vihamanafushi. The concept was simple and back to nature using coral stones, this being a common material for building houses in the Maldives in the 1970's, which were collected from the surrounding reefs. The roof was covered with thatch and coconut timber was used as beams and columns. Two small generators provided electricity and meals were served in the small restaurant, which was sufficient for 60 guests. Local staff, without formal training, were employed throughout the resort.

According to the Maldivian entrepreneurs, construction was nevertheless a laborious task with the limited facilities available at that time. National infrastructure was at its lowest level and the country was just recovering from the impacts of the Second World War. "I was cook, gardener and room boy. We had to do everything ourselves," explained Mr. Maniku. "We had nothing in the Maldives then, nothing. No Banks, no airport, no telephones only ham radio or Morse code with Colombo. Even the UNDP experts said that tourism would never succeed because there were no facilities, no infrastructure."

The 30-room Kurumba Village was opened on 3rd October 1972 as the first ever Maldivian resort of the fledgling industry. Kurumba has now been upgraded in different phases after it's opening, the major renovation being done during the 90's. Presently the resort is 180 rooms which includes a Royal Kurumba Residence (http://www.kurumba.com/acc-royal.html), Presidential Suites and Pool Villas all the way through to the lead-in Superior rooms. Kurumba Maldives today is still evolving and is proud of being a pioneer in the Maldives and a part of living history.

Throughout the year, Kurumba Maldives will hold events to mark this momentous occasion as well as preparing a coffee table book showcasing the history of Kurumba Maldives.

Kurumba Maldives will also be running a photo competition, with a main prize of a 7 nights stay for two persons in a Pool Villa, daily Champagne breakfast, lunch and Dinner in Vihamana, return airport transfers, a sunset cruise and two signature Veli Spa treatments. Please see http://www.facebook.com/kurumbamaldives for more details.

Kurumba Maldives celebrates the Year of the Dragon on the 23rd January 2012

Vihamanafushi, Republic of Maldives -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/08/2012 -- Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) completed a large celebration to bring in the Chinese Year of the Dragon. The resort completed a large set up in Ocean Grill with themed Asian buffet, large dragon ice sculptures and Dragon features. The signature dishes in were Chinese spiced fish, dumplings, fish balls, meat balls, moon cakes, tangerines, nian gao, and assortment of live and fresh seafood and five vegetable salads for five blessings. An overwater lighting display was completed and a large screen live feed watching Beijing bring in the New Year.

Astrology is so important to the Chinese and the Chinese year of the dragon is so special. The year 2012 of the Black Water Dragon promises to be a very interesting time that will provide plenty of opportunities for all members of the zodiacal circle. This period has many enigmatic, mysterious, unexpected and memorable moments that one can use for one's own benefit - under a certain activeness and skill of each of the zodiac signs.

The New Year 2012 by the eastern calendar does not begin on 1st of January as we are used to think, but on 23rd of January, however, its stormy start will not cause the slightest doubt among any of the representative of the zodiacal circle.

Kurumba Maldives Celebrates the Festive Season in Style

Vihamanafushi, Republic of Maldives -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/03/2012 -- Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) has conducted a comprehensive Festive Season agenda for its guests in 2011.

Throughout our festive season we have had a full program of activities, recreation and entertainment for both adults and children.

On Christmas Eve, a seafood buffet and live cooking station dinner in Ocean Grill was served. Def Note, debatably Maldives best band, entertained on the evening and dinner was served ocean side and under the stars.

The signature night was certainly the Sparkles and Diamonds event on New Year's Eve. Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) was celebrating the success of 2011 and brought in 2012 in style with a Sparkles and Diamonds Party. We started the evening with sparkling wine and a lucky draw of a one carat diamond to spark off the evening. There was white, white and more white with the sparkles of diamonds. While sipping Champagne for pre dinner drinks guests were warned to mind the rock in their glass – as Kurumba brought in the stars on with one lucky guest can winning that beautiful diamond!

The Diamonds worked up the appetite so guests prepared for a sumptuous Seafood buffet with numerous live cooking stations lavishly spread throughout Ocean Grill restaurant. As refreshing as the food was, our F&B team were also stars in their delightful themed outfits – it was a white party after all!!!

The real party began before the 2012 countdown – as guests were serenaded by some surprise stars and a fashion parade before grooving into the music with the band and DJ playing favourite tunes prior to the countdown. As we left the year 2011, amazing performances of light show and fire dancers welcomed the year 2012.

First and foremost, we are excited to announce that Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) will be celebrating its 40th birthday in 2012. We are in the midst of planning a big celebration in October 2012 to mark its Ruby Anniversary. We sincerely hope that our fellow supporters will be able to join us on this joyous occasion. Look out for more details soon!

As we have mentioned on our last newsletter, our spa has undergone a makeover. We are proud to launch the new spa, with the name 'Veli', which means "sand' in Maldivian. The treatment rooms have been refurbished and the spa overall now provides you a better and balanced ambiance.

Our classic Italian restaurant 'La Cucina" (http://www.kurumba.com/winedine.html) has also recently been given a fresher and more modern look. A tantalising new menu accompanies this change.

Last but not least, if you have the time, please check out our new website and check out the new 'Today at Kurumba' section which keeps you informed on what's happening on Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) as well as the entertainment schedule which is updated on a daily basis!

Well, let's see what else is happening in Kurumba!

Wine & Dine
La Cucina (http://www.kurumba.com/winedine.html) has been revitalised, maintaining its traditional elements with a few modern touches. The warm lighting and dark stained wooden features around the room are highlighted by wide plum coloured walls, bearing a carefully selected range of modern artwork, to give you a more comfortable and warm dining experience.

Along with this refurbishment, an all new outdoor dining area surrounded by well lit trees is a new addition. Guests can enjoy the beautiful starry skies of the Maldives, take in the cool breeze of the Indian Ocean while they enjoy classic food with a light Sangiovese and of course the attentive and friendly service of Kurumba's staff.

One of the signature highlights of La Cucina's menu is the Saltimbocca with veal rib with pancetta and sage served with a creamy truffle polenta and green asparagus. And for fans of harvests from the sea, the hearty Grilled Seafood Risotto is a must try.

Vihamanafushi, Republic of Maldives -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/01/2011 -- Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) has created a new department called Majaa Recreation to enhance the guest experience and add value by offering a range of complimentary activities and increasing the diversity of nightly entertainment.

The Dhivehi word, Majaa, means fun. This will be the underlying philosophy for the Recreation department. Majaa Recreation will be the "fun" centre of the island. This allows it to be a unique identity and destination within Kurumba.

The purpose of Majaa Recreation is to provide guests with many options to enjoy their holiday while experiencing the Maldivian palette and learning about the water that surround Kurumba in an environmentally responsible way with a Maldivian twist.

Majaa Recreation will be split into different categories to reflect the different types of activities available. These categories are; Kan'du	(Ocean) - Ocean based activities; Hakatha (Energy) Energy or sporting activities; Kulhivaru (Games) Games; Visnun (Learning) Understanding and learning activities; Haveeru (Evening) Evening activities. This will allow guests to easily identify the type of activity to match their taste as well as allowing guests an opportunity to interact with the local culture, environment and meet other guests to have fun along the way. Some examples of the complimentary Kand'u activities are snorkeling lessons and guided house reef tours. For Visun there are Bodu Beru lessons, wine tastings and Maldivian cooking demonstrations.

Majaa Recreation Manager, Monica Comanescu, and her team of six (6) recreation members complete this newly introduced department in Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/). The team has compiled an extensive range of daily activities that are available for guests and their families to enjoy. The talented and fully trained recreation team will supervise and lead activities with great enthusiasm, creativity and fun, to provide guests a truly fantastic holiday experience. Aside from excursions, the Majaa Recreation team aims to keep the guests engaged in enriching and safe activities.

Kurumba Maldives Commences Weekly Marine Biology Presentations

Vihamanafushi, Republic of Maldives -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/03/2011 -- Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) has added weekly educational presentations for its guests, given by marine biologist Verena Wiesbauer Ali. The lectures, themed "Beauty & Diversity of the Maldive Islands" and "Structure and Ecology of the Maldive Islands", are conducted free of charge alternately every Monday evening. The two lectures are aimed at creating awareness among resort guests and staff and will ideally sensitise the audience and teach how to swim, snorkel and dive in a sustainable manner.

"Beauty & Diversity of the Maldive Islands" was the first presentation that commenced on 25th July 2011. It takes the audience on a visual journey below the sea surface and dives with it into the visible and hidden world of marine creatures; starting from the most primitive invertebrates and ending with the predators of the oceans. Resort guests and staff will get a new perspective on animal diversity and the adaptations to marine life that surrounds our islands.

The second presentation, "Structure & Ecology of the Maldive Islands" begins with a journey through the geological history of the Maldivian Atolls and islands. It teaches about the current status of coral reefs, their threats and how everyone can contribute to their conservation. Besides interesting facts about artificial islands, the terrestrial fauna and flora are covered in this lecture too. Questions like "What actually is a coral?" and "How do corals reproduce?" will be answered here.

Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com/) has already provided four lectures to date and received very positive feed-back from its guests. Verena welcomes the audience to pose questions, browse through scientific literature and learn more about some of the marine specimen that are displayed on a table after every presentation.

About the marine biologist: Verena Wiesbauer Ali
Inspired by her lecturer Dr. Reinhard Kikinger (EcoCentre Kuramathi and University of Vienna), Verena Wiesbauer Ali started working in the Maldives in 2007 as the first resident marine biologist on Huvafen Fushi resort. She introduced guided snorkeling lessons and awareness presentations for guests, but her main work focused on the establishment of a coral nursery and an artificial coral reef around the world's first Underwater Spa. This project was part of her MSc. thesis, which she completed in 2008 at the University of Vienna, Austria. She then moved back to the Maldives and worked for a local environmental consultancy firm with a team of environmental surveyors.

In 2010, she became a licensed Environmental Impact Assessment consultant and is now engaged in various projects in the Maldives, besides giving awareness lectures to local students and the general public. Since the combination of tourism and marine biology is her passion, she started working with the team of Kurumba Maldives in July 2011.
