ReportsnReports.com: Trade E-Book Publishing 2011

Simba Information’s “Trade E-Book Publishing 2011” is now available at ReportsnReports.com.

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/22/2011 -- Now in its third year, Simba's Trade E-Book Publishing report series has been recognized as the source for independent and myth-busting analysis on the most exciting but least understood segment of trade books.

For our 2011 edition, Simba has upped the ante by continuing its exclusive, nationally representative survey of U.S. adults on a quarterly basis, allowing the authors of the report to add new e-book devices (including the iPad and the Nook Color) to our coveted device analysis and add more questions on this ever-changing segment.

This new edition expands on Simba's already-extensive e-book category analysis, updated demographic data of e-book buyers, data on how consumers really feel about pricing, projections on how many consumers will enter this market in the coming years, and much more.

The report also provides demographic intelligence about the e-book consumer—including gender, age, household income, education level and more. Simba has also studied the average number of e-books read by consumers of the format and compared it to what is known about the consumption of print titles. Since Simba's survey does not target book buyers exclusively, we are able to capture the nuances of the common e-book reader in ways the competition just can't match.

Trade E-Book Publishing 2011 also features trends and pitfalls in the marketplace, key publisher and retailer initiatives, new psychographic details of consumers and a thorough device analysis. You can't afford to be without this groundbreaking analysis.

Stamford, CT - April 27, 2011 -Trade E-Book Publishing 2011, the survey also revealed a shift in demographic makeup of the e-book buyer from men to women during 2010-which brings the e-book format more in line with longtime trends in print books.

Although the iPad has generated a lot of hype since its launch in April 2010, the survey reveals most owners do not use it to read books, suggesting the device is used for games and other media instead. The report finds owners of tablet devices do not make up the majority of e-book users, with 45% of survey respondents citing the PC or Mac as their e-reading device.

"A lot of people equate the sale of a new gadget with the creation of a new reader, and it just doesn't happen," said Michael Norris, senior analyst and author of the report. "In both the offline and online world, there are a lot of independent factors and distractions that will keep a person from discovering and enjoying a book."

According to the report, demographic shifts occurred within the population of e-book buyers in 2010, with women now outnumbering men. The shift was a dramatic change from the 2009 results, which revealed 13% of men and 9% of women had purchased an e-book.

"In 2009, about 6,000 people a day bought an e-book for the first time," added Norris. "2010 expansion was less dramatic on the newcomer side, but the population of e-book buyers shifted away from the disengaged and occasional buyer and towards consumers who are more committed to reading print and digital books in general."

The report, Trade E-Book Publishing 2011 includes an analysis of e-book consumption for smart phone and tablet devices, including Amazon's Kindle, Apple's iPad and iPhone and Barnes and Noble's Nook, as well as projections on which devices are expected to lead through 2013. In addition, the report provides a complete demographic profile of the e-book reader and features an extensive look at the best performing e-book titles, authors, imprints and categories.

Despite Overall Decline in Trade Books, Science Fiction/Fantasy Will Grow 3.4% in 2011

Representing just 6% of the total trade book market, the science fiction/fantasy segment will grow 3.4% in 2011, reaching $578.6 million, despite the overall market's expected 5.2% decline. According to a report published by media and publishing forecast firm Simba Information, the science fiction and fantasy categories experienced double-digit increases in title output, along with stronger ratings on the consolidated bestseller list in 2010.

According to the report, the science fiction/fantasy segment is gaining market share, adding half a percent in 2011 compared to 2010, as it more than triples its 1% growth rate from the past two years.

"The sci-fi/fantasy segment has been a stable growth segment for the past few years," notes Michael Norris, Simba Information's senior trade analyst. "Since the book market took a big hit in 2007, it has been inching closer to its previous high-point."

Title output for fantasy rose sharply to 6,389 titles, growing 14.6%, followed by science fiction with 3,714 titles, growing 10.1% in 2010. Simba's report, which uses a consolidated bestseller list comprised of ratings from USA Today, The New York Times and Publisher's Weekly, finds science fiction performed strongly on the list with 76 titles by 58 authors, while fantasy held 321 titles by 192 authors, although its success was led by the Twilight Saga.

"Even though a lot of titles are hit or miss with audiences, both as books and as media tie-ins, there will continue to be a thirst for this segment of fiction for the foreseeable future," added Norris.

Simba's report, Business of Consumer Book Publishing 2011, details the overall market for trade books, segmented by 18 major categories including health & fitness, romance, self-help, science fiction/fantasy and others. It includes demographic and psychographic information on the average book buyer, along with company profiles of the leading publishers including Penguin Group, Macmillan and Random House.

ReportsnReports.com: Trends in Trade Book Retailing 2011

Simba Information’s “Trends in Trade Book Retailing 2011” is now available at ReportsnReports.com.

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/20/2011 -- Recent news in book retailing has stunned most observers of the publishing world, but Simba Information and the buyers of the Trends in Trade Book Retailing series have been ahead of the curve: this report series, now in its third year, has long predicted the challenges of Borders Group and other retailers and documented the price wars long before the first shot was fired.

Trends in Trade Book Retailing 2011 compiles national data on who is buying books and e-books, what they're buying and where they're buying them, as well as detailed overviews of the major channels, how their market share is trending, and what outside factors are affecting each. The report provides a "scorecard" for each channel—bookstores, the Internet, book clubs, and "other"—and a demographic overview of the average consumer.

The report exhibits a trend unique to bookstores, which "subsidize" the e-book market by acting as a book showroom for nearly 10% of U.S. adults.

Simba compiled trusted nationally representative data from Experian Simmons for this analysis. The four channels are also ranked by the estimated number of customers, what formats they buy, and how many titles the consumers purchase and how things are trending in each channel now that e-books are part of the equation.

With the book retailing segment as challenged as it is, no publisher, retailer, or industry analyst can afford not to have this vital tool.

E-Book Market Partially "Subsidized" by Physical Bookstores

Stamford, CT - August 31, 2011 - A recent report by media and publishing forecast firm Simba Information found that even though bookstores have lost some of their customer base over the years, the channel feeds into the e-book universe by serving as a 'book showroom' for the roughly 10% of U.S. adults who buy e-books.

"Believing that adults will begin taking to e-books in large numbers because of Borders' liquidation is a dangerous assumption," said Michael Norris, senior analyst of Simba Information's Trade Books Group, commenting on the report. "Since most adults buy books from multiple channels and enjoy using bookstores for browsing, the loss of a 'book showroom' can impact print books and e-books in unexpected ways."

Data from Simba indicates that the more channels a consumer uses, the more likely he/she is to buy—even though bookstores are sometimes cut out of the action. In a Simba survey of over 110 bookstores across the country, 38% indicated that their (former) regular customers who own a Barnes & Noble Nook or an Amazon Kindle 'often or very often' return to browse without buying anything. 43% of the same booksellers also said non-regular customers often or very often come to browse before leaving to buy from another retailer.

"Publishers should be working around the clock to find ways to make chain and independent bookstores stronger, and not for reasons having to do with sentimentality," Norris said. "If the only retailers left selling books are those that don't need to, publishers will lose their power and relevance overnight. I genuinely worry that books may follow the same dreadful path of music, where gadgets like the iPod spring up to make consumption easy, the showrooms for media discovery close, piracy becomes a cultural expectation and the market shrinks by billions as more people buy less."

The report, "Trends in Trade Book Retailing 2011," also shows the interconnected world of retailing with thorough profiles of the bookstore, online and other major retailing channels, outlining key demographic details and trends unique to each, including the gender, age, household income, education level and purchasing habits of the buyers. The significant influence of non-bookstore physical store retailers like Walmart and Target and the influence of e-book sellers like Amazon.com are also covered.

ReportsnReports.com: Yellow Pages Bankruptcies 2011: Financial Crisis

Simba Information’s “Yellow Pages Bankruptcies 2011: Financial Crisis” is now available at ReportsnReports.com.

Dallas, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/20/2011 -- The yellow pages industry has been rocked by economic woes since 2009 when three publishers—Ambassador Media, Idearc Media (now SuperMedia) and R.H. Donnelley (now Dex One)—and one key supplier—Quebecor World (now Quad/Graphics—filed for bankruptcy protection. The economic problems claimed another publisher in late 2010 when Local Insight, the fifth largest publisher in the U.S., followed suit.

Since those dark economic days many companies have been reorganized, reinvented and renamed as they scrambled to move away from print and into the online world.

Many considered the bankruptcies as a sign of the collapse of yellow pages print industry brought on by the Internet while others look to the internal operations of companies, which often resulting in the entrance to executive offices becoming revolving doors.

The Yellow Pages Bankruptcies 2011: Financial Crisis takes an in-depth look at the actions behind the scenes that led to bankruptcy court, chronicles their progress to date and projects where the companies and the entire industry—both independent and incumbent—are likely to find themselves in the future.

Highlights of The Yellow Pages Bankruptcies 2011: Financial Crisis include:
• The cases behind the financial collapse of Ambassador, Idearc, R.H. Donnelley, Quebecor World and Local Insight.
• The likely fate of the remaining mega publishers: AT&T, Yellowbook and Yellow Pages Group;
• The impact on CMRs and suppliers;
• Delivering yellow pages information through print vs online or mobile;
• The keen competition to print the yellow pages heightens with Quad/Graphs and R.R. Donnelley vying for their business;
• A look at the industry's competition—both print and electronic;
• A segment by segment breakdown of the industry.

Company profiles of the leading Yellow Pages publishers include:
• Ambassador
• AT&T
• Dex One
• Local Insight Media
• Quad/Graphics
• SuperMedia
• User-Friendly Media
• Yell Group
• Zip Local

As directory publishers advance through the financial crisis that shook the yellow pages industry, challenges remain in the move toward a digital future, which is expected to churn out 2.5% revenue growth by 2013. A recent report by media and publishing forecast firm Simba Information notes the health of the industry is contingent on its evolution from print to digital.

According to Simba, financial challenges are significant for publishers Ambassador Media, Dex One and SuperMedia, who have recently emerged from bankruptcy even after shaving off a large chunk of their debt. The same is true for Local Insight Media, which went into bankruptcy court in late 2010, and its affiliate Caribe Media, which filed in May 2011. After consolidating their print directories and cutting down costs, the publishers are now facing difficulties in expanding onto a digital platform, the report asserts.

"There's a lot of debt out there from borrowing over the past decade or more to fuel expansion," said Dave Goddard, Simba's senior yellow pages analyst. "Because so much money is being spent on repaying debt, it's difficult to support an investment in the transition from print to online without borrowing, and few can borrow today."
Although the industry is expected to decline slightly through 2012, it will post revenue growth of 2.5% in 2013, rounding off the industry at $12.7 billion. Yell Group ranks among publishers exciting the industry turn-around by leading the digital transformation. They are aiming to change their model to 75% online operations and 25% print by 2015. According to the report, industry growth is contingent on publishers expansion of internet advertising and services.

"The demise of the yellow pages industry is not imminent, but the evolution of the industry from print to digital is definitely going to happen and at varying speeds," added Goddard. "Most of the remaining publishers are relatively strong and can adjust to the new technologies that will carry them forward into the digital world, while still making a profit from the shrinking print."

Simba Information's report, The Yellow Pages Bankruptcies 2011: Financial Crisis, delivers an industry-wide perspective on how publishers and suppliers have emerged after bankruptcy and where the industry will evolve to survive in the future. Along with revenue projections, the report provides company profiles and status updates for Ambassador Media, AT&T, Dex One, Local Insight Media, Quad/Graphics, SuperMedia, User-Friendly Media, Yell Group, and Zip Local.
