Liftn Buddy Urges Smart Lifting to Prevent Back Injury

Liftn Buddy Urges Smart Lifting to Prevent Back Injury

North Fargo, ND -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/03/2013 -- Dale Bromenshenkel, Demand Generation Specialist of Lift'n Buddy (http://www.liftnbuddy.com), a division of Southworth products, wrote in the weekly safety blog that back injuries in the workplace are one of the most costly musculoskeletal disorders in the United States.

Bromenshenkel reported, "According to a study done at the University of Minnesota, lower-back pain affects over a million workers in the United States each year. More people miss work due to back injuries than any other musculoskeletal disorder."

Back injuries are very common among those who work primarily in physical labor. It can be caused by lifting heavy objects, repetitive lifting, lifting in extreme cold, lifting or carrying awkwardly shaped objects, or improper lifting and carrying form. Back injuries can also be caused by standing too long or having poor posture when sitting or standing. Back injuries are one of the most preventable types of injuries in the workplace. They can be prevented by proper lifting technique, having mechanical help, or having others help.

Having mechanical devices such as lifts or pulleys can be more expensive but studies show that the initial investment will more than likely be cheaper compared to the cost of workers' compensation for those who are injured. The cost of hiring replacement employees or the cost to pay other workers to cover their shifts adds to the total costs as well. Back injuries are very common in the work place and can be caused many different ways, but there are ways to help try to prevent some of the injuries from happening in the first place.
Following Lift'n Buddy's win of a Gold Edison Award in 2012, Aaron Lamb found his company in a situation where they had more business than they could handle. As a result of their aggressive promotion of their Award winning status, they not only ramped up sales, but caught the eye of a business suitor.

Lift'n Buddy was recently acquired by Southworth Products International in a deal that retained the integrity of the original development team in their headquarters, "I feel that the Edison Awards was the tipping point for all of this, and Southworth is a great global leader in our industry and a perfect partner. We will be stronger with them," said Lamb.

Liftn Buddy Urges Reporting of Unsafe Conditions

Liftn Buddy Urges Reporting of Unsafe Conditions

North Fargo, ND -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/26/2013 -- Brad Lindemann, Sales Coordinator of Lift'n Buddy (http://www.liftnbuddy.com), a division of Southworth products, wrote in the weekly safety blog, how to report an unsafe manufacturing environment. Lindemann explained, "It is always in your company's best interest to heed any warning when it comes to workers' safety. Fixing a problem before someone gets hurt has the potential to save the company millions of dollars in medical bills and lawsuits."

Employees reporting unsafe conditions give the company a chance to address safety concerns and fix any issues. In many instances personnel could avoid escalation of the situation if they inform the employer of the problem when it is first discovered.

The Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a government body with the sole purpose of creating a safer work environment. There are multiple ways any employee can contact OSHA. For situations where an employee is in imminent danger while on the job, OSHA will conduct an investigation within 24 hours of receiving a report. All other health and safety related issues will be handled within 3 days to a couple of months, depending on the severity of the situation. If an investigation finds that conditions are deemed safe, an employee can expect a written notification within 15 days.

Lindemann urged employees, "Do not be afraid to contact OSHA in the event of unsafe working conditions. National whistle-blower laws make it illegal for an employer to intimidate, harass, or fire employees based on reports filed. It is highly recommended that worker report any of these abusive situations to OSHA or potentially take legal action."

LiftnBuddy 2-Wheel Trucks Reduces Back Strain

LiftnBuddy 2-Wheel Trucks Reduces Back Strain

North Fargo, ND -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/25/2013 -- The need for a Lift'n Buddy for heavy and awkward loads is essential. Using the Lift'n Buddy can reduce employees' physical strain and improve productivity. Many jobs that require two people to lift and move items can be done in less time by just one worker and a Lift'n Buddy.

There are many benefits of a Lift'n Buddy for lighter loads. Repetitive bending and lifting, even when the load is light, can take a toll on workers. Lifting a twenty pound box may not seem like a large strain, but repeating it a hundred times is equivalent to lifting a ton. By reducing the amount of effort exerted by a worker, a Lift'n Buddy can dramatically improve productivity while reducing the risk of injury, repetitive stress disorders, and costly workers' compensation claims.

The Lift'n Buddy is effective to transfer loads to shelves, workbenches, conveyors, processing equipment, delivery trucks, and customer vehicles. Many manufacturing and service industries use the Lift'n Buddy in bars & restaurants, landscape supply & nurseries commercial bakeries, and warehousing and distribution shipping. Additionally, the Lift'n Buddy is used for small appliance delivery route delivery trucks, and home service centers.

Liftn Buddy at Interphex Next Week

Liftn Buddy at Interphex Next Week

North Fargo, ND -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/17/2013 -- Lift'n Buddy, a division of Southworth Products, will be exhibiting at Booth 3578 at the INTERPHEX 2013 conference, April 23-25 at the Javits Center in New York City. Lift'n Buddy is the revolutionary mobile lifting device that combines the best of a standard two-wheeler's durability and functionality, with automatic lifting and lowering capabilities.

According to The Agency for Safety and Health, working in the retail sector can be hazardous, especially when young and new to the job. Some hazards are specific to the retail sector. Young workers may be at risk from moving vehicles in delivery areas, falling objects, and strains on the body from lifting loads and making repetitive movements.

The retail sector employs a large proportion of young people. Characteristics of the work include low pay, casual, part-time and weekend work, and increasing use of shift working with a high staff turnover. Over a quarter of workers work part-time in this sector, and many of these are young workers, especially students still attending school or university. Because this sector is undergoing a great deal of change, because it is a major employer of young, inexperienced workers, and because staff change rapidly, attention to health and safety is particularly important. Also, risks in the retail sector are not always obvious compared to some other types of work, which can mean that they are not well-controlled.

The Lift'n Buddy 350 is used for loading and unloading shelves, racks, workbenches, delivery vehicles, or any number of applications that require items to be lifted and/or transported. The Lift'n Buddy 350's linear actuator provides smooth lifting and lowering with precision saving young workers from potentially hazardous handling injuries in the liquor retail industry.

Liftn Buddy Solves Liquor Retailer Hazards in Workplace

Liftn Buddy Solves Liquor Retailer Hazards in Workplace

North Fargo, ND -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/16/2013 -- An inspection program identified that liquor retailers' manual handling as the most common hazard in the workplace. Employees were at most risk of a manual handling injury when moving and processing stock such as cartons of liquor. Manual handling means any activity requiring the use of force exerted by a person to lift, lower, push, pull, carry or otherwise move, hold or restrain a person, animal or thing.

Across all industries, manual handling injuries account for approximately one third of the total Lost Time Injuries/Diseases (LTI/Ds). Within the liquor retail industry the proportion is higher with manual handling accounting for half of the total LTI/Ds. An analysis of the industry's injury data showed sales assistants in the 25-34 year age category sustain the highest number of injuries. Most of the injuries occur when lifting/handling loads and most commonly result in sprains and strains.

Employees are often asked to carry out manual handling tasks, which force them to bend and twist the spine significantly when lifting cartons on to or off a racking system. Without the use of an appropriate working platform, employees' movements are restricted, compelling the employee to adopt extreme postures and placing them at a greater risk of injury to the back. The Lift'n Buddy is used for loading and unloading shelves, racks, workbenches, delivery vehicles, or any number of applications that require items to be lifted and/or transported. The linear actuator provides smooth lifting and lowering with precision saving the employee from potentially hazardous handling injuries in the liquor retail industry.
Leaders from the Edison Award Innovation Community shared their experience, their innovation process and product with about 50 at risk middle school students. The joint club presentation is a partnership between non-profit Edison Universe and The ScienceFIST Foundation. The presenter provides background for the students to review on a Tuesday and conduct a "show and tell" style presentation on a Thursday. The students are curious and inventive young people who are looking for encouragement of invention and discovery.

Edison Award finalists mentor to groups of 4-5 scienceFIST middle school students. As students begin working on product designs in small groups, the mentor communicates with the students on a weekly basis through email, video blogs, Skype or in person to discuss their ideas and encourage them on their journey of invention and discovery. This great opportunity has a high impact on the education of a few exceptionally curious and inventive young people. The mentors spend about 30 minutes a week for ten weeks plus any independent research for student questions.

Doug Snider, VP Product Design & Development at Lift'n Buddy shared with scienceFIST students how and why the Lift'n Buddy was invented. He explained Lift'n Buddy's innovation process, and told about his own invention at age 10 of a glass with fan. Doug offered his opinion on the importance of collaborating with others and gave marketing tips for the students own innovation projects.
