FTIR spectroscopy also indicates the amount of material present and is therefore an excellent tool for both qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Hatfield, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/27/2011 -- Laboratory Testing Inc. (LTI) continues to expand its line of materials testing services with the recent addition of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) services. FTIR is an analytical technique used to identify organic, polymeric, and in some cases, inorganic materials. LTI is performing the analyses with a high-tech Thermo Scientific Nicolet iS10 FT-IR spectrometer.

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis results in an absorption spectra which provides information about the chemical bonds and molecular structure of a material. Absorbance peaks provide information that can be used to identify the general types of material being analyzed. The analytical spectrum can be compared with cataloged reference spectra to identify base polymers and additives.

FTIR analysis compliments the wide-range of instrumental and wet chemistry services performed in the Chemistry Lab at LTI for materials characterization and failure analysis. In addition to identification of polymers by FTIR, qualitative and quantitative element analysis, even at trace levels, is available for a variety of materials including metals, powdered metals, ores, ferroalloys, composites and ceramics. Laboratory Testing Inc. is fully capable of preparing test specimens for all analysis.

Laboratory Testing Inc. will be attending the SIBC Submarine Supplier Days and the ACIBC Action Days 2011 Conference in March 2011. Laboratory Testing Inc. provides materials analysis, metals testing, nondestructive testing and calibration services to companies that supply parts and materials to the submarine and aircraft carrier industries.

Hatfield, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/14/2011 -- Owners and management of Laboratory Testing Inc. (LTI) will be attending the Submarine Industrial Base Council (SIBC) 20th annual Submarine Supplier Days on March 8 and 9, 2011 and the Aircraft Carrier Industrial Base Coalition (ACIBC) 7th annual Action Days 2011 Conference on March 30 and 31, 2011. Laboratory Testing Inc. provides materials analysis, metals testing, nondestructive testing and calibration services to companies that supply parts and materials to both industries. Both events will be held in Washington, D.C. and will include meetings with members of Congress to discuss their programs.

Submarine Supplier Days provides an opportunity for SIBC members to meet with elected representatives to continue to build support for the Virginia-Class Program and the Ohio-Replacement Program, and to help educate representatives about the important national security benefits of these programs. SIBC says the campaign is particularly important this year with a newly-elected Congress and increased focus on budget issues. The VIRGINIA nuclear submarine is the latest class of advanced capability fast attack submarine to be designed and delivered to the United States Navy. The US Navy has a fleet of 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines that will start retiring in 2027 after over 40 years of service. Support is needed for research and development of an Ohio-class replacement that is seaworthy by that time.

The ACIBC states that the shipbuilding industry is critical to both our nation's security and the economy of United States. Members of the ACIBC will gather in Washington to urge continued support for the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier programs. They will meet with members of Congress to discuss how sustained Congressional funding for the carrier programs has important implications for the continued strength of the thousands of companies that provide parts and services for the construction and maintenance of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS / EDX) have been added to the materials testing and failure analysis capabilities performed at Laboratory Testing Inc. of Hatfield, PA. The new system allows for high magnification evaluation, element analysis and material characterization.

Hatfield, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/10/2010 -- Laboratory Testing Inc. (LTI) now performs Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS / EDX) for enhanced materials testing and failure analysis capabilities. The testing laboratory recently purchased a Hitachi S-3400N SEM and EDAX EDS to provide greater customer convenience and timelier turnaround than was available with subcontracted services.

The Hitachi SEM features a variable pressure system capable of accommodating wet and/or non-conductive samples with minimal preparation. The SEM is able to produce high resolution images at magnifications from 5X to 300,000X. The large sample chamber allows for the examination of samples up to 200 mm (7.87 in.) in diameter and 80 mm (3.14 in.) in height.

The Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry or EDS component is applied in conjunction with Scanning Electron Microscopy or SEM analysis to detect and measure elements in or on the surface of the sample for qualitative analysis and/or quantitative information on a sample's elemental composition. The new SEM and EDAX EDS equipment at Laboratory Testing is particularly helpful in microanalysis and analyzing small areas of interest on samples. The EDAX EDS features a silicon drift detector (SDD) that offers superior speed and energy resolution compared with traditional SiLi detectors. The system is powered by the new TEAM software package that facilitates material characterization via methods such as spectral analysis, line scans, and element mapping.

Hardness Testing Capabilities Expanded at Laboratory Testing Inc

A new Struers state-of-the-art hardness testing system has expanded Vickers and Knoop test load ranges and the capacity for mounted samples in the Metallography Lab at Laboratory Testing Inc.

Hatfield, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/04/2010 -- The Metallography Lab at Laboratory Testing Inc. (LTI) has expanded its capabilities with the purchase of a state-of-the-art hardness testing system, a Struers DuraScan. The PC operated system covers both microhardness and macrohardness test applications. The new equipment has significantly expanded the company's test load range for Vickers and Knoop with capabilities from 10 gf – 10 kgf:

• Vickers: 10 gram – 20 kilogram
• Knoop: 10 gram – 2 kilogram

In addition to load range, the mounted sample size features of this hardness testing equipment have increased the company's previous capabilities. The Struers DuraScan accommodates test samples up to 5.5" in diameter and 10" in height.

The Metallography Lab at Laboratory Testing Inc. generally performs microhardness testing on metal samples, but other materials may be tested on a case-by-case basis. The new equipment is ideal for case hardness depth (CHD) measurements and testing the quality of welds in the heat affected zone.

Microhardness testing is an indentation method for measuring the hardness of a material on a microscopic scale. A precision diamond indenter is impressed into the material at a range of loads. Precision microscopes are used to measure the indentations. The dimensions of the impression and the test load are used to calculate a hardness value. These values are used as indicators of material properties and expected service behavior.
(LTI) has been named one of the Best Places to Work in PA for 2009. LTI is an accredited, independent testing and calibration laboratory in business since 1984. Laboratory Testing Inc. specializes in materials testing, nondestructive testing (ultrasonic, X-ray, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, hydrostatic pressure), specimen machining, failure analysis, dimensional inspection and calibration services (dimensional, mechanical, pressure, torque, force, mass, vacuum). The company employs over 100 engineers, chemists, technicians, inspectors and support staff on two work shifts.

The Best Places to Work in PA program was created in 2000 to identify, recognize and honor the best employers in Pennsylvania. The awards list is made up of 100 companies divided into two groups: 50 medium-sized companies with 25-250 employees and 50 large-sized companies with 251 or more employees. Laboratory Testing Inc. has been named one of the Best Places to Work in PA in the medium category.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the 100 Best Places to Work in PA. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophies, systems and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process.

The statewide survey and awards program is one of the first of its kind in the country. The program is a public/private partnership between Team Pennsylvania Foundation, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and the Central Penn Business Journal.

Laboratory Testing Inc. will be recognized at the Best Places to Work in PA evening awards ceremony on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center in Hershey, PA. Rankings will be revealed at the ceremony.
