Parents Cautioned by U.S. Government As to Cough and Cold Medications for Children

Parents all over the United States is cautioned by the government to avoid giving cough and cold medications to their children especially those under 2 years old without doctor's prescriptions. This warning has been part of general review regarding the cough and cold medicine products' effectiveness and safety for children.

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/05/2007 -- On Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration or FDA declared that its committee in charge of Nonprescription Drugs Advisory would be having a meeting on October 18 – 19 in order to discuss the children's use of medicines for cough and colds. This announcement is given amidst the many questions regarding the benefits and risks of the cough and cold drugs catering to youngsters.

Until then, the FDA gave out a public health advisory citing the dangerous effects of such nonprescription medicines for cough colds, especially linked to children 2 years old and younger. The adverse results are usually due to the children having received too large doses of these kinds of medications.

According to the FDA advisory, parents must carefully follow the directions of use given along with the medication.

Here are the other recommendations stipulated in the advisory:

- Do not let children under the age of two take cough and cold drugs without specific prescription or direction by a doctor.
- Do not provide children with medications that are made and packaged specifically for adults. Use only those products marked with "pediatric" use since these, are the ones made for use of infants, babies or children.
- Medicines for the treatment of cough and colds are usually packaged in different dosages or strengths. If uncertain regarding the right product to use for a child, consult a doctor first.
- If there are other medicines being administered to a youngster, even if it is an over-the-counter drug or prescription, the health care provider of the child must first review and give approval of the combined usage.
- The package labels of every medicine have an account of the "Drug Facts." The information contained in this label must be read carefully to be aware of the active ingredients present in the drug and its warnings.
- For medicines that come in liquid form, it is important that parents use a measuring device packaged along with every medicine formulation. It is marked in order to deliver the recommended dosage, accurately.

It is unadvisable to use a kitchen tablespoon or teaspoon, which are not accurate and appropriate measuring device.

Jobless Claims Among U.S. Workers Increase

The United States Labor Department reported last week, Thursday that the number of workers who were recently laid off from their jobs increased. This suggests the even if the employment condition in the country is softening a bit, it still remains on good standing. The newly jobless people are presently signing up and applying for unemployed benefits, particularly unemployment insurance.

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/04/2007 -- The unemployment rate, as reported by the federal government has rose to 4.6 percent in the past month of July. Such statistics reflects a six-month peak on unemployment.

Subsequently, based from the Labor Department's report, the fresh applications for jobless benefits increased by 7,000 to 316,000, with due consideration to the seasonal employments. This rise was manifested during the past week ending August 4.

Present data on jobless claims is at its highest point starting from late June statistics. The nation's economists declared predictions that the claims would become lower for last week, which were about 310,000.

However, as compared to last year's jobless data of 319,000, the present number is considerably lower.

As per release of last week's lay off reports and the moving average involving new jobless claims for four weeks, smoothing out the weekly instability, an increase was seen in the past week to 307,750, marking a 1,750 addition from prior week's data. Since July 21, this data is the highest level noted.

Thus, those collecting unemployment benefits also rose by 39,000 to 2.56 million during the workweek that ended July 28. This is the most recent week period wherein such information was already made available and released by the Labor Department. Since early July, this data also marks as the highest.

Concerning the labor market data, there were recently set up barometers suggesting some cooling off in the hiring of workers. Partly, this have significant toll on the market of sour housing system and the struggles being felt within the country's automobile industry.

Overall, though, the creation of new jobs is slowing down.

Last July, employers increased payrolls for workers by 92,000 but down from the 126,000 rise given in June. The government declared that such data indicates the fewest monthly add-ons since February of this year.

According to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues in the central bank on Tuesday, they are expecting the labor market to sustain along with the nation's economic status. Bernanke and his associates are setting these expectations, despite the presence of some strains due to the turbulence in Wall Street, some tightening in the credit state of affairs and slump in housing.

Multi-million Settlement Reached by Brown With California Corinthian School

On Monday, California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced that the Corinthian Schools, Inc. and Titan Schools, Inc. would pay the amount of $6.5 million as a lawsuit settlement. This amount includes a $5.8million amount for consumer restitution. The lawsuit involves allegations that the profit-oriented vocational schools have engaged in unlawful or illegal business practices, particularly false advertising. The lawsuit alleged that the vocational schools have presented inaccurate employment and salary information to its students.

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/28/2007 -- In the complaint, it was noted that the students of the Corinthian school paid from $7,000 to $27,000 for the vocational courses being offered. These courses usually take about six months up to one year to fully complete.

The students alleged that the Corinthian had overstated the percentage of student who has obtained employment from such courses. It also inflated the information for starting salary and used these inaccurate facts to persuade prospective students to register in the school.

With this, the students who have enrolled found themselves paying their tuition fees through combined ways like private loans, taxpayer-subsidized loans, and government grants that are arranged for them by Corinthian.

According to California Attorney General Brown, the students of Corinthian were expecting that the tuition payments they made would come up with attractive job opportunities, as promised by the company. However, their high expectations come tumbling down as many among them came up unemployed, still with piling debts.

The complaint filed by the students alleged that Corinthian practiced in further unfair, illegal and / or fraudulent business practices and acts. Allegedly, they falsified records presented to the state government, offered vocational programs which failed to comply with the minimum standards for a student to complete the course and find employment, consequently.

The Corinthian was also accused of using provisions in settlement contracts that prevented the former students to reveal any matter concerning their arguments with the Corinthian administration to the various government authorities.

Brown put forward the agreement resolution to the Los Angeles County Superior Court. He also included the lawsuit the settlement had resolved.

The settlement is presently pending for judicial approval. It provides $5.8 million in restitution for the students. From this amount, $1.5 million is intended for debt cancellation. $4.3 million will be given as a form of refund to Corinthian's former students.

The settlement also provides a $700,000 worth of payment for civil costs and penalties.

The California attorney general stated that the settlement is a groundbreaking act to that offered fair restitution and justice to the students. It also obtains the commitment of Corinthian to reform its education practices in the coming days.
