The $21.5 million, 65,000 square foot facility at IRSC&apos;s Ft. Pierce campus represents a unique partnership between the college and local business partners, including FPL.<br />

The Brown Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will focus on educational programs in alternative energy and sustainability. Students will learn how to produce biofuels, construct photovoltaic solar cells, experiment with light technologies, and gain hands-on experience in all aspects of energy efficient building construction.<br />

The center will also feature a nuclear simulator complete with a control room that will help train students to work at Florida Power &amp; Light&apos;s St. Lucie or Turkey Point nuclear power plants. The college received a $3.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to train instructors who will then train students.<br />

The program includes a partnership of schools from 18 states.<br />

FPL donated equipment so students can get real-life experience in a controlled environment.<br />

DeYoe of DeYoe Wealth Management cautions that planning ahead to address 2012 taxes is just as important as filing 2011 return by April 17. DeYoe is advising his firm&apos;s clients to begin preparing immediately for the end of the Bush Tax Cuts.<br />

Bush signed a number of tax cuts into law in 2001 &amp; 2003 that were extended after a very contentious debate on the congressional floor in 2010.  Once they complete their 2011 taxes, DeYoe recommends to his clients that they immediately begin their tax planning for 2012 and beyond, a time without the Bush-era tax incentives.<br />
<br />
"Once someone receives a benefit, it is very hard to take it away," said DeYoe. "Unfortunately, given the state of our federal budgets, I think it&apos;s highly unlikely we&apos;ll see a continuation of the Bush tax cuts after the end of this year. Spending must come down and tax rates must go up."<br />
<br />
DeYoe recommends that his clients discuss the following strategies with their financial advisor or accountant:<br />
<br />
1. No one knows for sure where income tax rates are going, but unless Congress acts with new legislation, both income &amp; investment taxes will increase in 2013. To ease into these tax increases, the first thing taxpayers can do is to accelerate income into 2012. For example, if they are expecting a year-end bonus from their employer, ask to be paid no later than December 31, 2012. If they are a small business owner, taking more income in 2012 and less in 2013. At the same time, defer as many deductions as possible into 2013. If a business can wait to purchase that new equipment or remodel an office until next year, it might be a good idea to do so.<br />
<br />
2. To make sure taxpayers are not caught short of cash come tax time next year, review federal and state withholding exemptions now. Should tax rates spike, it will probably be a lot easier to pay a little bit of that tax every month this year rather than having to come up with a large lump sum at tax time in 2013.<br />
<br />
3. Once the Bush tax cuts expire, taxpayers can expect that taxes will consume a larger share of all future investment returns. However, investors probably won&apos;t see an even increase across the board. For example, taxes on capital gains could go from 15 percent to 20 percent (a 33 percent increase) while taxes on qualified dividends might go from 15 percent to 40 percent (a 164 percent increase). Since the tax changes will affect total return based on the type of assets held, this is definitely worth discussing with a financial planner or investment advisor.  Everyone should review their asset allocation together and reduce the "expected" returns built into their financial plan.<br />
<br />
4. If investors have large gains in their current portfolios or have company stock options they&apos;ve been waiting to exercise, 2012 might be a better year to recognize those gains rather than giving up more of those gains to taxes in 2013.<br />
<br />
5. Finally, the estate and gift tax exemption is slated to drop from $5 million to $1 million in 2013. This estate and gift tax exemption may be the single best tax management opportunity for large estates in the tax code today. Anyone with a large estate should talk to a CPA, attorney and financial advisor about taking advantage of the gifting portion of this benefit before it disappears.<br />
<br />

We can wish that they come together, but a wish is not a plan. We must consider and act upon the reality of coming tax increases at all levels of income."<br />

Brazil is set to host the Olympics in 2016 and the FIFA World Cup in 2014. Both of these events have ensured that the local steel industry is booming. AAA said that this has meant growth for the demand for sustainably produced charcoal.<br />

Mr Johnson explained: "Measures have been taken to discourage the steel industry from using unsustainable timber in their charcoal. As a result, plantations, such as the one managed by Greenwood Management, are likely to see huge demand for their ethical products."<br />

Plantations, such as the ones managed by Greenwood, usually focus on fast-growing, hardy species that can be used in charcoal manufacture, furniture making and construction. AAA said that the demand for timber from sustainable sources is likely to increase further in the coming years as China and India continue to seek out raw materials.<br />

Round a corner, and you&apos;ll stumble upon a working wind turbine. A few steps further, a team of pre-teens is constructing a radio transmission tower under the direction of teacher Laurie Futterman.<br />

This month, Ms. Futterman won her second grant from Florida Power &amp; Light Company to implement student projects exploring renewable energy. The solar waterfall was the result of her first grant, and took about a year to complete. For her next project, she dreamed even bigger.<br />
<br />
This year&apos;s FPL grant will help Ms. Futterman and the school&apos;s "Green Team" apply a wind turbine they built to provide power to a radio tower, which will broadcast student announcements of school events and programs to parents&apos; car radios as they pick up or drop off their children.<br />
<br />
The Green Team started out as an afterschool environmental police force who audited classrooms for wasted energy. Thanks to the grants, the group has evolved into a green engineering club, taking on projects like building the solar powered waterfall, wind turbine, and now radio transmission tower.<br />
<br />
In preparation for the project, Ms. Futterman had her students read "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind," the story of a boy in Malawi who used tree limbs, a bike tire, and old junk parts to build a wind turbine that powered lights in his family&apos;s house.<br />
<br />
The Green Team&apos;s project is just as hands-on. In constructing the wind turbine, the students prepped, primed, and riveted parts and hand-coiled copper wire. They&apos;re nearly ready to run a wire underground to the radio tower and up the PVC pipes that form the legs of the tower, and mount the antenna. Next up: the students will work on the radio station and announcements.<br />
<br />
"There&apos;s only so much a teacher can do in the classroom, and we&apos;re grateful to have the grants for an invaluable opportunity to actually put green energy into motion," said Ms. Futterman. "I see our students truly inspired and energized by their mission. They work after school every Monday until about five o&apos;clock - they even worked through their winter vacation!"<br />

The radio tower project was made possible with a $1,600 grant from FPL to spur innovative and critical science, technology, engineering, and math education in the classroom. While so-called "STEM" education is seen as the key to job growth and global competitiveness, public funds to support it are scarce.<br />
<br />
"There&apos;s no doubt that STEM classes are one of the most important components in today&apos;s education," said Maureen Wilt of FPL. "That&apos;s why FPL began our teacher grant program – to provide funds for creative, exciting classroom projects that spark curiosity and give our children exposure to real-world applications of the science behind everyday energy use.       <title>FRA 'Disappointed' in US Illegal Timber Imports</title>

A recent long-term research study by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) has found that millions of dollars worth of timber has been imported into the US by over 20 US-based businesses since 2008.<br />
<br />
The report stated, "Exporters in Peru and importers in the United States and around the world are currently integral parts of a systematic flow of illegal timber from the Peruvian Amazon."<br />
<br />
Peter Collins, an analysis partner at research and analysis consultancy FRA, said, "We are disappointed to learn that illegal logging is still seen as OK among so many US businesses, who are willing to support the trade in timber that has been sourced from vulnerable forests."<br />
<br />
Although the report claims that "sheer negligence" is somewhat to blame, US firms should see sustainable sourcing of timber as an obligation, claimed FRA. Mr Collins added, "It&apos;s not difficult these days to source sustainably produced timber and it doesn&apos;t have to cost the earth."<br />
<br />
FRA supports projects like the FSC scheme, which clearly labels sustainable timber to help consumers make the right choices when buying timber products.<br />
<br />
The EIA investigation was carried out over several years and found that US firms illegally laundered and imported 112 shipments of protected mahogany and cedar from the Peruvian Amazon between 2008 and 2010 alone.<br />
<br />
The report does not hold back, stating, "Sometimes intentionally, sometimes through sheer negligence, each of the actors and agencies involved in this system are working as gears in a well-oiled machine that is ransacking Peru&apos;s forests and undermining the livelihoods and rights of the people that depend on them."<br />
<br />
FRA supports sustainably managed forestry schemes in Latin America, such as the plantations runs by Greenwood Management in Brazil. US investors are able to invest in these projects, helping them to thrive and reaping the financial benefits of growing timber prices, explained FRA.<br />

These snowbirds face unique challenges in preparing their homes, and Florida Power &amp; Light (FPL) wants to help seasonal residents in its service territory face challenges like mold prevention and storm preparation, and help them save on their electric bills, too.<br />

Although the number of seasonal residents varies, FPL estimates that there are about 400,000 seasonal residents its service territory.<br />

FPL&apos;s energy efficiency blogger, Danielle Mousseau, recognizes the opportunity to help seasonal residents. "We&apos;ve noticed that seasonal residents have been very active on our blog, asking questions on ways they can save and how they can prevent mold while they&apos;re away for the summer," says Mousseau. "To help meet their needs, we developed a comprehensive checklist that they can use to help them save energy and money as well as prevent mold when their home is vacant."<br />
<br />
Like all FPL customers, seasonal residents benefit from the lowest electric bill out of the state&apos;s 55 electric utilities, and a bill that is 25 percent below the national average, says Mousseau.<br />
<br />
Here&apos;s FPL&apos;s checklist to prevent mold and save energy while your home is vacant:<br />
<br />
Mold prevention<br />
- For programmable thermostats: Set your A/C to run at 72 degrees for just two hours each morning before sunrise and at 88 degrees the rest of the time.<br />
- For non-programmable thermostats: Set your A/C to run at 80 degrees while you are away. If you live in a condo or apartment set your A/C at 77 degrees.<br />
- For maximum energy savings: Use dehumidifiers instead of air conditioning. Set dehumidifiers at 58 percent by sinks and showers, one for every 1,000 square feet. Be sure to place the dehumidifiers so the water runs into the drain.<br />
<br />
Appliances<br />
- Water heater: Unplug or turn off the circuit breaker to the hot water heater<br />
- Unplug appliances and electronics. For security reasons, you may want to place timers on indoor lamps.<br />
- Refrigerators: If you prefer to keep your refrigerator on, set it at its warmest setting. If your prefer to keep your refrigerator off, make sure to clean the interior with solution of 1 tbsp. of baking soda in 1 quart of water; dry thoroughly and leave doors open. Remove all food from the freezer and refrigerator and leave the refrigerator door propped open. If you have an automatic ice maker, switch it to the "off" position.<br />

Pool<br />
- Set your pool pump to run no more than six hours a day.<br />
- Arrange for someone to check your pool&apos;s chemical levels and water level while you&apos;re away.<br />

      <description><![CDATA[<div class="newsleft"><div class="newsbody"><p class="subheadline">Cancers shrank for about one third of the patients who could be evaluated, and disease stabilised for a further third. For one patient, all signs of their cancer disappeared.</p><p>Leeds, England -- (<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.sbwire.com/">SBWIRE</a>) -- 04/04/2012 --  A naturally-occurring harmless human virus may be able to boost the effects of two standard chemotherapy drugs in some cancer patients, according to early stage trial data published today in Clinical Cancer Research.<br />
<br />
RT3D, trade name Reolysin, is a new drug developed by Oncolytics Biotech Inc with preclinical and clinical studies conducted at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and The Royal Marsden Hospital. It is based on a virus (reovirus type 3 Dearing) that is found in almost all adults&apos; respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts without causing any symptoms.<br />
<br />
RT3D has the ability to grow in and kill certain types of cancer cells, but does not grow in normal cells.<br />
<br />
Previous trials injecting patients with the virus on its own showed limited effectiveness, but the team found that RT3D appeared to magnify the effects of platin and taxane-based chemotherapy on tumour cells.<br />
<br />
Dr Kevin Harrington and colleagues in Leeds therefore started a clinical trial testing intravenous RT3D in combination with chemotherapeutics carboplatin and paclitaxel in 31 patients with advanced cancers who had stopped responding to standard treatments.<br />
<br />
An initial Phase I study was carried out in patients with a range of advanced cancers, which showed the drug combination was safe. Side-effects were found to be generally mild, and consistent with chemotherapy alone.<br />
<br />
Patients with head and neck cancers were found to have the best responses, so a Phase II expansion study at The Royal Marsden Hospital, London, and St James&apos;s Hospital, Leeds, was therefore targeted to patients with these types of cancers.<br />
<br />
Cancers shrank for about one third of the patients who could be evaluated, and disease stabilised for a further third. For one patient, all signs of their cancer disappeared.<br />

"We saw really very impressive response rates in these patients. These are patients whose cancers had grown despite a great deal of previous treatment, including platinum-based chemotherapy for many," Dr Harrington, Leader of the ICR&apos;s Targeted Therapy Team and Consultant Oncologist at The Royal Marsden, said. "Under those circumstances, we&apos;d expect that the average response rate to chemotherapy alone might be as low as single digits figures and the average survival would be somewhere between three to four months. In our Phase I/II study we show this had been prolonged to an average of seven months, albeit not in a randomised trial."<br />

"Based on the results of this study we&apos;ve now started recruiting patients with advanced head and neck cancer to a randomised Phase III trial, in which all patients will receive chemotherapy and half will receive Reolysin as well. We are extremely excited about this progress."<br />

The study also found the virus was not shed after treatment. This means people could be given the drug as outpatients as no risk was found that they could transmit the virus to others.<br />

Head and neck cancers include tumours of the eye, nasal cavity, tongue, gums, lip, cheeks, voice box and oesophagus. Around 650,000 people are diagnosed with squamous cell cancer of the head and neck each year worldwide, and around 350,000 die from the disease annually.<br />
