UCLA's Algirdas Avižienis Honored With Eckert-Mauchly Award for Year 2012

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/12/2012 -- ACM (the Association for Computing Machinery) and the IEEE Computer Society will jointly present the Eckert-Mauchly Award to Algirdas Avizienis of the University of California, Los Angeles for fundamental contributions to fault-tolerant computer architecture and computer arithmetic. His conceptual designs led to construction of the Self-Testing and Repairing (STAR) computer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at California Institute of Technology, which was instrumental to the JPL mission to explore space. The Eckert-Mauchly award is known as the computer architecture community's most prestigious award. Avizienis will receive the 2012 Eckert-Mauchly Award at the International Symposium on Computer Architecture on 12 June in Portland, Oregon.

Avizienis coined the term Fault-Tolerant Computing to capture the unique aspects of his ideas for creating a low-power, long life computer using self-repairing techniques. He chaired the first IEEE Technical Committee on Fault-Tolerant Computing in 1969, and established the first international conference. Moving to UCLA from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he expanded the scope of his research to fault-tolerant system architecture and dependability modeling. He extended his work on error-detecting codes for VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design, resulting in new techniques to implement self-checking programmable logic arrays and improved chip yields.

Continuing his contributions to the science of dependable computing, Avizienis addressed ways to provide tolerance against software faults through Multi-Version Programming. He subsequently developed redundant number systems for fast digital arithmetic, a critical element in the field of digital arithmetic and created efficient algorithms for error-coded operations.

In addition to mentoring a large number of Ph.D. and M.S. students, Avizienis established one of the first graduate courses in the US dedicated to computer algorithms and processors. When Lithuania achieved independence in 1990, he helped establish western-style research and Ph.D. programs at the national university of Lithuania, Vytautas Magnus, which is located in his home town.

A Fellow of IEEE, he is a recipient of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Information Systems Award and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Exceptional Service Award. He also received the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award and the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Silver Core Award. He earned B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

ACM and the IEEE Computer Society co-sponsor the Eckert-Mauchly Award, which was initiated in 1979. It recognizes contributions to computer and digital systems architecture and comes with a $5,000 prize. The award was named for John Presper Eckert and John William Mauchly, who collaborated on the design and construction of the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC), the pioneering large-scale electronic computing machine, which was completed in 1947.

New Software Engineering Exam Approved for Licensure

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/28/2012 -- NCEES, the organization overseeing engineering and surveying licensure exams, is preparing to launch a Principles and Practice of Engineering exam for software engineers.

The IEEE Computer Society worked with IEEE-USA and NCEES to develop the exam, which is also co-sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

NCEES will begin offering the PE exam in software engineering in April 2013. After that, the exam will be administered yearly and used throughout the United States.

The NCEES board of directors approved the development of the new PE exam in 2009. In accordance with existing exam development policies, 10 member licensing boards of NCEES presented letters supporting the proposed exam.

Groups representing software engineers have long maintained that software engineering should be licensed because it is increasingly practiced in areas that reach into the everyday lives of the general public, such as traffic control systems and the electrical grid. An IEEE Computer Society survey of software engineers indicated that two-thirds of those employed in the industry support a licensure exam for their profession."With software engineering crucial to so many engineering projects, it's important to regulate its practice in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public," said NCEES President Dale Jans, PE.

For more information on the PE Software exam, visit ncees.org/exams. Registration for the April 2013 exam administration is scheduled to open mid-December 2012. The exam specifications—the test blueprint of knowledge areas to be tested and their relative weights of emphasis—are available online at ncees.org/exams. IEEE is planning to publish study materials for the exam later this year.

NCEES is a national nonprofit organization composed of engineering and surveying licensing boards representing all US states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. An accredited standards developer with the American National Standards Institute, NCEES develops, scores, and administers the examinations used for engineering and surveying licensure throughout the United States. NCEES also provides services facilitating professional mobility for licensed engineers and surveyors.

The Computer Society has been laying the foundation for greater professionalism in the software engineering field with the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK), which establishes a baseline for knowledge in the field. The Computer Society also offers two certifications—the entry-level Certified Software Developer Associate (CSDA) credential and the mid-career Certified Software Developer Professional (CSDP) credential.

IEEE Computer Society Discusses Cloud Computing With Delegation from China

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/28/2012 -- The IEEE Computer Society hosted a group of Chinese government and industry leaders to share resources on cloud computing, a strategic technology for both China and the IEEE Computer Society.

The contingent of 18 technology executives, researchers, and engineers represented a variety of government offices, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; the Electronic Technology Information Research Institute; the China Electronic Product Reliability and Environmental Testing Research Institute; and various provincial administrations; and the private Beijing-based China Electronics Technology Group Corp.

Irena Bojanova, IEEE Computer Society Cloud Computing chair, outlined cloud computing solutions such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Windows Azure, and discussed how cloud computing can assist enterprises in accomplishing their goals, including controlling energy and operational costs, dealing with server sprawl, and addressing the heightened need for support amid increasing complexity.

Cloud Computing is one of five Future Technologies Strategies identified in the IEEE Computer Society's 2012-2014 Strategic Plan. The others are: Smart Grids, Life Sciences, Future Processing Technologies, and Machine Learning. As Cloud Computing chair, Bojanova, a professor at University of Maryland University College, will help define and formulate cloud computing concepts for IEEEE and formulate a framework architecture, as well as provide technical guidance and recruit experts.

The IEEE Computer Society produces a wealth of cloud computing knowledge resources, said Director of Products & Services Evan Butterfield in his presentation to the group. Five IEEE Computer Society magazines—Computer, IEEE Security & Privacy, IEEE Internet Computing, IT Pro, and IEEE Computing in Science and Engineering—and one journal—IEEE Transactions on Parallel & Distributed Systems, cover the field.

In addition, the Computer Society sponsors six international conferences dedicated to cloud computing and a Special Technical Committee (STC) on cloud computing. In 2013, a new magazine calledIEEE Cloud Computing and a journal called IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing will be launched.

In 2010, China's government designated cloud computing as one of the seven Strategic Emerging Industries for the country's 12th Five Year Plan (2011-2015). China's cloud computing market is poised to demonstrate 77.5 percent growth during that period, with ERP and CRM attaining greater popularity with wider availability among all cloud applications.

The market is being driven by the desire for cost reduction, widespread Internet adoption, rising smartphone usage, and innovation. However, its growth could be challenged by the lack of expertise and knowledge among IT executives, and data security concerns, according to analysts.
