Voskos Greek Yogurt Now Available at Walmart

Voskos Greek Yogurt is now carried by over 2,800 Walmart stores in the U.S., making Walmart the yogurt brand’s largest distributor

Sun Valley, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/24/2013 -- Walmart Stores, Inc., the number one retailer in the U.S., is now the number one distributor of Voskos Greek Yogurt. Nature's premium brand yogurt is carried in every U.S. Walmart with a grocery department, or about 2,800 of the retailer's approximately 4,400 locations. Ninety percent of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Walmart location. Sun Valley Dairy, the parent company of the Voskos brand, has added new jobs and is investing in new production equipment and infrastructure to meet the increased demand.

To be carried by Walmart, food products must meet strict food safety requirements and producers must be registered with Dunn & Bradstreet and carry product liability insurance. It was surprisingly easy to work with the retail giant, notes Voskos regional sales manager, Rick Hoefner. "We made one call on Walmart and they picked up Voskos. They actually wanted it the moment they saw it."

"Voskos Greek Yogurt has been on the shelves at Walmart for about a month now," says Hoefner."It's selling much faster than Walmart's forecast because at great price, consumers have quickly noticed the great price value relationship."

Although Voskos Greek Yogurt is the least expensive brand on the shelves in many Walmart locations, it is actually a premium brand. "Voskos is made with hormone-free, antibiotic-free milk from grass fed cows," notes Hoefner. "Most of our milk comes from happy California cows, so it's as fresh as we can get." The yogurt is free of gluten, and contains no bovine growth hormones such as rBST or rBGH, or other genetically modified organisms. It is also preservative-free.

Voskos Greek Yogurt is available in organic and regular varieties, plain or flavored with fruit or honey. Unlike other Greek Yogurt brands, Voskos gets its thick and creamy texture the traditional way: straining off the excess whey naturally thickens the yogurt. "Many other Greek yogurt manufacturers rely on pectin, corn starch or other additives to thicken their product," Hoefner says. "Our yogurt is also naturally higher in protein thanks to our ProStrain™ process. Other manufacturers add protein powder to boost their protein levels."

Voskos Greek Yogurt has been recognized in awards contests presented by Fitness magazine, Women's Health, Vegetarian Times, Natural Solutions, Self Magazine, Prevention and Cooking Light magazine.
Greek Yogurt: a Delicious Weapon in the Fight Against Childhood Obesity

Plain Greek yogurt is a high-protein, high-calcium “super food” that can help prevent blood sugar spikes and promote a feeling of fullness when consumed instead of high-fructose foods and beverages.

Sun Valley, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/21/2012 -- The obesity epidemic that currently plagues this country has now spread to children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled since 1980, with nearly one in five children now classified as obese. Although children may suffer most from the social aspects of obesity, such as teasing or low-self-esteem, obesity can also lead to bone and joint problems, and sleep apnea. Obese children who grow up to become obese adults are at a higher risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.

In an attempt to help mitigate this crisis, dietitians and parents alike turn to low fat diets. Dietitians and many personal trainers even claim that if you want to lose weight, you must have a caloric deficit at the end of the day. In order to achieve this you must combine diet and exercise. Right? "Not necessarily so," says Nikko Generales, a contributor to Voskos Greek Yogurt's "Get Fresh" blog. "Unfortunately, this old-fashioned model fails to acknowledge the findings of modern research into metabolism and the biochemical pathways of our body," says Generales, who has a B.S. in physiology, and is currently in medical school. "The real culprit is excessive fructose consumption," says Generales.

Fructose, like glucose, is a form of sugar. "But unlike glucose, fructose is not directly utilized by the brain and other parts of the body for energy," says Generales. "It has to be metabolized in the liver first, in a similar fashion to that of ethanol--in other words, your liver processes fructose the same way it metabolizes a shot of whiskey," notes Generales. "Fructose is a chronic 'hepatotoxin,' or chemical that is toxic to the liver."

Generales notes that plain Greek yogurt "provides perhaps the best carbohydrate-to-protein ratio of any food. Greek yogurt is a great way to not only provide you with sustainable energy but can also double as a recovery food after strenuous exercise," says Generales. "I recommend Voskos' Plain Original Greek Yogurt. You can also throw in some blueberries--which are low in fructose and high in fiber--for added flavor."

"So what can you do to help combat the child obesity epidemic? First of all, make sure your child eats more Greek yogurt. It's high in protein and in calcium, and like fiber, it promotes a feeling of fullness and helps to avoid high-fructose snacks. Secondly, follow these basic rules when packing your child's next school lunch," Generales advises.

1) Avoid sugary drinks, and stick to water and milk. "Most sucrose and fructose consumption in this country comes from sugar sweetened beverages such as soda pop, energy drinks, fruit juices and flavored drink mixes," notes Generales.

2) Eat as many non-processed foods as possible. Avoid products that are high in added sugar and preservatives.

3) Pack more raw fruits and vegetables to help increase fiber consumption. Note that fruit does contain fructose, however the ratio of fiber to fructose is high. According to Dr. Robert Lustig, a neuroendocrinology who specializes in childhood obesity, fiber can decrease the "rate of intestinal carbohydrate absorption," "induce satiety," and "inhibit absorption of some free fatty acids to the colon."

4) Increase "good" fat consumption from Omega 3's and 6's.

Here are some healthy school lunch snacks that will help keep kids stave off childhood obesity.

1) As mentioned previously, Greek yogurt is considered a "super food" because of its high protein and high calcium content. "Your kids will also get the added benefits of probiotics," says Generales.

2) Fruit – A piece of fruit, such as an apple, banana, or a handful of blueberries can provide kids with healthy antioxidants and fiber.

3) Cucumbers, carrots, and celery sticks with hummus dip – Eating raw vegetables is an easy way to increase fiber and vitamin consumption.

4) Kale chips – A member of the cabbage family, kale ranks high in terms of nutritional value. Kale is rich in carotenoids, anti-oxidants, and Vitamins A, K, and C. Drizzle olive oil on kale leaves and bake them in the oven until desired texture is achieved.

5) Beef or turkey jerky – A great high protein alternative to cold-cuts that doesn't require refrigeration. Whenever possible ensure that it comes from grass-fed and free-range cows and turkeys.

Greek Yogurt: a Healthier Snacking Option for a Day at the Beach (or the Tailgate Party)

Protein-rich Voskos Greek Yogurt can be a healthful substitute for junk food on your next outing to the beach, the park, or a tailgate party.

Sun Valley, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/16/2012 -- Tailgate parties, picnics and trips to the beach are synonymous with overindulgence and junk food. Typical high-calorie snack foods like potato chips and pretzels, while delicious, offer empty carbohydrates without much nutritional value.

Nikko Generales, a contributor to Voskos Greek Yogurt's "Get Fresh" blog, offers these alternatives to guilt-inducing junk foods for your next picnic or other outdoor gathering. "All are under 150 calories," Generales notes.

Water — At least 1.5 liters of water should always be in the cooler or backpack when heading to the beach or any other outdoor activity. "Proper hydration is the foundation of any nutrition plan," says Generales, "and is necessary for maintaining most physiological functions."

Nuts and seeds — Rich in good fats (Omega-3s), a handful of nuts and seeds, such as almonds and chia seeds, can provide the sustainable energy necessary to stay full at the beach, picnic or tailgate. Generales advises, "Remember to choose raw, unsalted, and unsweetened options whenever possible."

Fruit — A piece of fruit, such as an apple, or a handful of chopped dehydrated pineapple, can provide you with healthy antioxidants and fiber. This is a great low-calorie way to grab a quick source of energy.

Greek yogurt — Providing perhaps the best carbohydrate-to-protein ratio of any food, Greek yogurt is a great way to not only provide you with sustainable energy but can also double as a recovery food after a day of running in the surf or playing touch football. Greek yogurt also offers the added benefit of probiotics to aid in digestion and improves overall health. "I prefer Voskos' 5.3 oz. strawberry yogurt, which has only 120 calories," says Generales.

Almond butter with celery and carrots — Spreading a couple tablespoons of almond butter on carrots or celery is a great alternative to peanut butter and is rich in omega fatty acids.

Protein lettuce wraps — Take large romaine lettuce leaves and wrap them around a cooked lean protein source of your choice, such as chicken or turkey breast. "For added flavor and variety," says Generales "add olives and cucumbers. You can also drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar inside."

Peanut butter balls — Make your own protein "bars" by mixing peanut butter, rolled oats, dates, a protein powder of your choice (preferably whey protein isolate), and a dash of maple syrup. You can either eat them raw or bake them in the oven.

Air popped popcorn – Substituting this fiber-rich snack for chips and full-fat dip is a great low-calorie alternative.

Greek Yogurt: An Athletic Super-Food of Olympic Proportions

This summer’s focus on elite athletic performance highlights the health benefits of a diet that includes probiotic-rich Greek yogurt.

Sun Valley, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/31/2012 -- As the world's greatest athletes seek every possible performance advantage, sports nutrition has become a growing field of study. "An athlete's diet, nutrient intake, and supplementation protocol plays a role in not only performance, but health and well-being," says June M. Lay, M.S.

Research has shown that prolonged bouts of high intensity or endurance exercise temporarily depress the immune system, making athletes vulnerable to infection, and making it harder for them to recover from their competitions. But fortunately for elite athletes, the probiotics found in products such as Voskos Greek yogurt can increase a healthy immune system.

That isn't the only benefit of probiotics. "In one study, conducted pre- and post-marathon, 83% of the runners reported that they occasionally or frequently suffered one or more gastro-intestinal disturbances while running or immediately afterwards," says Lay. "That's a sobering statistic." The probiotics in Voskos Greek yogurt have been shown to prevent infections and antibiotic-caused diarrhea, colon cancer, reduce bowel inflammation, and manage irritable bowel syndrome. "So adding Greek yogurt to their diet may really make a difference in the health and performance of these athletes," says Lay.

Greek Yogurt Featured in 4th of July Picnic Recipe for Beef Sliders With Chimichurri Sauce

Are you bored with plain old burgers? Beef Sliders with Chimichurri Sauce feature the flavors of Argentina in a mayonnaise substitute made with healthful Greek yogurt.

Sun Valley, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/03/2012 -- Voskos Greek Yogurt is featured in a hamburger recipe that's a perfect addition to any Independence Day grill-out. Drawing on the flavors of Argentina, a Chimichurri-inspired sauce for the sliders combines cilantro, parsley, and oregano, and can be made the day before to allow the flavors to develop.

Ingredients for Sliders:

1 pound ground beef
3 medium scallions, white and tender green parts only, very finely chopped
1/2 cup minced cilantro
1/3 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
1 medium tomato, thinly sliced
1/2 medium red onion, thinly sliced
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
8 small hamburger or slider buns, such as King's Hawaiian, halved

Ingredients for Chimichurri Yogurt Sauce:

3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
2 teaspoon red wine vinegar
1/2 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon finely chopped oregano leaves
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup plain Voskos Greek Yogurt
1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste
Red pepper flakes to taste

Combine the garlic and vinegar in a bowl. Stir in cilantro, parsley, oregano, and lemon juice. Whisk in olive oil and yogurt and season with salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Mix well and refrigerate until ready to serve with sliders.

Place a grill pan over medium-low heat or preheat a gas or charcoal grill. Be sure the grillpan or grill is clean and the racks are oiled before preheating to prevent the small patties from sticking.

In a medium bowl combine beef, scallions, cilantro, grated cheese salt and pepper. Form the mixture into 8 patties, each about 2 1/2 inches in diameter and about 1 inch thick. Cook the patties for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Let them rest for 2 minutes.

Place slice of tomato on bottom half of each bun; top each with a patty, spread a teaspoon of chimichurri yogurt sauce, top with a slice of onion and place the other half bun on each. Enjoy!

Voskos Greek Yogurt Introduces "Free Sample" Campaign

Voskos Greek Yogurt is giving away free samples to Southern California communities. Check Voskos’ Facebook page for details on its next appearance.

Sun Valley, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/13/2012 -- Voskos Greek Yogurt, America's first national Greek yogurt brand, is normally available in stores such as Kroger, Publix, Bi-Lo, Whole Foods and Sprouts. But starting in April, the high-protein snack began showing up on the beaches of Southern California thanks to a new marketing initiative and a bright blue refrigerated truck full of delicious yogurt.

Voskos' campaign launched in April, 2012, and in its second week alone, the Voskos street marketing team gave away over thousands of Greek yogurt cups to active and healthy people. The blue Voskos truck has so far been seen in Venice, Santa Monica, San Buenaventura, the Huntington Beach pier, Runyon Canyon, Palos Verdes, downtown Los Angeles and Marina Del Rey. "Check out our Facebook page at http://www.Facebook.com/Voskos.Greek.Yogurt to find out where we'll be next," says Voskos Marketing Manager Gohar Ohanian.

"Although we're headquartered in southern California, there are still people who are not aware of the many benefits of Greek yogurt," says Ohanian. "Handing out free samples makes perfect sense, because once people taste our products, they're hooked."

Here's the story of one such "taste tester." "I do not like the taste of any dairy products, including yogurt," says Phyllis. "I decided that I would purchase one container of Voskos yogurt just to humor myself. When I arrived home, I opened the container, poured the crunchy things into the yogurt and took one taste...The yogurt was delicious, thick and filling. The 'crunchies' added a welcome amount of texture and added an delicious flair to the yogurt...Thanks for such a great product!! If anyone had told me that I would actually eat yogurt, I would have called them a liar...I love your yogurt!!"

"People are so excited when they taste Voskos for the first time," says Ohanian. "When we gave away free Greek yogurt samples in Runyon Canyon, people mentioned that they loved the consistency of the yogurt and how it's thicker than other brands. They also appreciated how the fruit is blended into Voskos Greek yogurt, and were also pleasantly surprised to see that Voskos wasn't watery when opened like other brands. All it takes for us to gain a new customer is that first taste of Voskos, so you can expect the Voskos Street Team to make more appearances."

Voskos Greek Yogurt has been recognized in awards contests presented by Fitness magazine, Women's Health, Vegetarian Times, Natural Solutions, Self Magazine and Cooking Light magazine.
Voskos Greek Yogurt Exhibits at IDDBA Annual Dairy, Deli, Bake Seminar and Expo

Voskos Greek Yogurt Features Its Products at the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association™ (IDDBA) Annual Dairy Deli Bake Seminar and Expo in New Orleans June 10-11, 2012.

Sun Valley, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/07/2012 -- Voskos Greek Yogurt, America's first nationally distributed brand, will make an appearance at the International Dairy·Deli·Bakery Association™ (IDDBA) Annual Dairy·Deli·Bake Seminar and Expo in New Orleans on June 10th and 11th, 2012. Voskos will be promoting its 32-oz. size Voskos Greek yogurt—available in Plain Non-Fat, Vanilla Non-Fat, and Greek Honey flavors—at booth #3852 in the convention center. Voskos Greek Yogurt is available nationwide in over a dozen regular, low-fat, fat-free and organic flavors at retailers including Kroger, Safeway, Publix, Bi-Lo, Whole Foods, Sprouts, and more.

"The growth trend in the Greek yogurt category is in large sizes because consumers have discovered Greek yogurt is an ingredient for many of their favorite foods," says Rock Hoefner, Voskos' national sales manager. "Take smoothies, for example. Smoothies are a $2.5 billion away-from-home-meal category. Consumers are beginning to realize they can make better smoothies at home with Voskos Greek yogurt. Knowing this, Voskos' retail partners have an opportunity to capitalize on this exploding trend and get some the business that has been going to smoothie shops by featuring Voskos in the large size container."

The annual IDDBA event attracts over 1,600 dairy, deli, and bakery exhibitors, making it a great venue for Voskos to interact and listen to their retailers. "The show gives us an opportunity to find out more of what our customers want from us," says Hoefner. "The IDDBA gives Voskos Greek yogurt a great opportunity to interact with our retailers to better understand their needs."

Greek yogurt sales are strong in the U.S., with food industry analysts predicting that Greek yogurt sales will reach $1.5 billion in 2012, "which is remarkable, considering the product has only been on store shelves in the U.S. for about six years," says Emily Neukircher, Voskos Marketing Manager. Voskos Greek Yogurt has been recognized in awards contests presented by Fitness magazine, Women's Health, Vegetarian Times, Natural Solutions, Self Magazine and Cooking Light magazine.
