Palmer Trinity School to Inaugurate New Athletic Field at Homecoming Game

Palmer Trinity School will host its first football game on its new Main Athletic Track and Field on Friday, September 15 when the Falcons play their homecoming game against the Stallions at Somerset Academy Silver Palms.

Palmetto Bay, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/19/2017 -- Designated as the school's Main Athletic Track and Field, it will be used by Palmer's football, soccer, lacrosse, and track and field athletic teams. It will also serve as a space to host special events for the community.

The new athletic field took six months for the planning stages and another six months to build and is one of only three fields in the Miami-Dade area to have an eight-lane running track. In its construction, the field was depressed three feet to create a stadium-like feel by using the land's topography. This design element highlights the school's natural surroundings and allows ocean breezes to sweep across Palmer Trinity's campus.

"We are proud to have this premier field as part of our 55-acre campus," stated Patrick Roberts, Head of School. "And we look forward to experiencing many future victories and creating fond memories for both the school and the community."

The existing athletic fields on the school's North Campus will continue to be used for other athletic games and physical education.
The session also generated enthusiasm in students because, for the first time, they gain a holistic perspective of our history as humanity.
Dr. Christian lives in Australia and teaches at Macquarie University. He is the author of several books and is a member of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities.

For the first time, Palmer Trinity School (PTS) juniors hosted a hunger project with the NGO Feeding Children Everywhere.

Palmetto Bay, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/08/2016 -- Feeding Children Everywhere is a not-for-profit organization that empowers and mobilizes people to assemble healthy meals for hungry children.

During the 2015-2016 school year the students raised $3,600 for this project. The class of 2017 packed 12,000 meals in one hour; each meal package costs 25 cents.

The event was held in the PTS Gym from 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. The students packed a well-balanced meal that consisted of dry vegetables, dry rice, lentils, and Himalayan salt.

The Junior Class President Tiago Rachelson, organized this project, because he was inspired from a food-packing event at the HOBY Leadership Conference, which he had participated in the prior year.

"One of my greater goals last year was to help my class and think outside of myself. I thought the hunger project would be a great project to give back to the community, I wanted to see if I can give back in some sort of way to the people of Haiti," Rachelson said.

Palmer Trinity Independent Online Course on Scottish History and Politics Ends with Visit to Scotland

In early January, Palmer Trinity School (PTS) launched a joint program, via Skype, with The Chadwick School in Los Angeles to study the crucial role Scottish history plays in the political identity of 21st century Great Britain. This independent online study course, Scotland: Rebellion, Colonization and Referendum, was offered through PTS’s History Department for grades 10 and 11, and was taught by associate heads of school Danny Reynolds and Dr. Manjula Salomon, and head of school, Patrick Roberts. The idea sprung from both Reynolds’ and Roberts’ love for Scotland and their Scottish heritage.

Palmetto Bay, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/03/2016 -- "The rich and complex history of Scotland, as well as present-day developments, provided a unique backdrop for this joint study course. We were excited that our students were not only able to work in partnership with The Chadwick School to better understand Scotland's role, past and present, but to have their awareness as global citizens heightened," stated Roberts.

The three sections of the course included the cause and effect of the rebellions by the Scots against the English, the mobilization of the Scots to colonize, and the establishment of the British Empire. The final section reviewed the Scottish independence referendum of 2014 and the rise of the Scottish National Party.

In addition, the course offered individualized interactive learning in collaboration with students from The Chadwick School. Students met with faculty periodically to review their progress, and on three Saturdays during the semester all students came together for an online class. Completion of the course will earn students a half history credit at PTS and a history credit from Colorado State University.

The course ended the week of May 30, followed by an experiential travel component to Scotland from June 27- July 4, 2016 for a combined total of 21 students.

Nathan B. Zeder and Daniel J. Zeder, who graduated in 1998, is an associate with Esslinger Wooten Maxwell Realtors (EWM). He received the Founders' Alumni Award, recognizing those who have demonstrated honor, courage and leadership, and who have helped to fulfill the vision of Palmer Trinity School's founders.

As a student-athlete, Zeder was a top-ranked junior in tennis during high school at both the state and national level. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 2002, he competed as a tennis pro for a year before partnering with his mother, Judy, to begin the Zeder team at EWM in 2003, which has consistently been ranked among the top five realtors in Miami-Dade County.

Zeder was inducted into the Palmer Trinity Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. He has been involved with PTS's Sandy Golf Tournament since 2005 which raises funds for outstanding students to receive need-based financial aid. In addition, he has served on the Admission Advisory Committee, has chaired the Alumni Annual Fund, and is now serving on the inaugural Alumni Association Board.

Daniel J. Diaz Leyva graduated in 1998 and is of counsel and a business lawyer with Foley & Lardner LLP. He received the Head of School's Alumni Award, recognizing distinguished service to the community and exemplifying Palmer Trinity School's mission — commitment to the moral, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and creative growth of all members of the community.
He was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of Miami-Dade College by Governor Rick Scott. His volunteer service for PTS includes the annual Alumni College and Career Day, serving on the Admissions Advisory Committee, speaking to prospective parents, and serving on the inaugural Alumni Association Board.

He has been recognized by several organizations for his community work and received the notable Ruth Shack Leadership Award from the Miami Foundation which is given to an emerging leader who embodies the qualities of ethical leadership, dedication and service to Greater Miami.

Palmer Trinity Athletic Hall of Fame

Arasay Guerra, Coach Michelle (Brenner) Mondell and Michael Haggard were inducted into Palmer Trinity's Athletic Hall of Fame.

Guerra graduated from PTS in 2006. She played volleyball for both Florida International University and Florida Memorial University. Guerra now coaches for South Dade Volleyball Club and Palmer Trinity School, helping the Falcons reach the semi-finals in the Class 16-3A State Tournament last fall.

Mondell, a former PTS student, began coaching in 1985 and volunteering as the assistant varsity soccer coach. From 1986-1993, she coached many sports, and was one of the first female football coaches in Florida. Under her leadership, the women's soccer team was the first team to go to a district final game. In 1993, Mondell was hired by FIU as Assistant Women's Soccer Coach where she helped lead the team to the Elite Eight of NCAA Division I women's soccer. She is now in her 30th year and continues to coach middle school and high school sports at Ransom Everglades School.

Haggard, who graduated in 1988, played both varsity football and baseball. He quarterbacked the undefeated 1984 JV football team and then went on to be the varsity quarterback. During his time as a player, he led Palmer to two Conference Championships, a number four ranking in the state of Florida and was 27-8 as a starter.

Haggard was recognized as an All Miami-Dade County selection in football and baseball during his senior year. He volunteers as coach of the RYAN Sports Flag Football team, having captured the national championship twice in the last three years. In addition, he is president of the Palmer Trinity Boosters Association, and serves on the Palmer Trinity Alumni Association Board. Today he is a successful partner with the Haggard Law Firm.

"We are very happy to see these distinguished alumni members honored for their contributions to our School—past and present.
Palmer Trinity School's 2016 Agents of Change Students Present Social and Environmental Change Initiatives

Palmer Trinity School (PTS) recently hosted its second annual Community Panel Presentation in which students enrolled in its Academy of Agents of Change (AAC) program presented social and environmental change initiatives before a panel of community leaders. This event was the culmination of a full-year academic course that empowers PTS Upper School students with the skills and experience to design, launch, and manage individual ventures for social change and environmental innovation.

Palmetto Bay, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/23/2016 -- The students presented their community initiatives to a diverse group of community members which included Miami-Dade Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava; John D. Fumagalli, president and CEO, Northern Trust/Florida; Caiti Pomerance, alumna, and founder of Debris Free Oceans and in-house counsel at Terranova Corporation; Laura Viveros, vice president and investment counselor, HSBC Private Bank; Adrianna Truby, academic dean, Palmer Trinity School; and Whitney Montgomery, executive director, North Carolina Outward Bound School.

After each presentation, the panel of judges provided an evaluation as well as constructive feedback on the initiative. The winning project was Inti Totes which received $1,000 in seed capital funding to bring the idea to life. Additionally, Rafiki Bracelets and Healthy Habits: Miami were awarded $500 and $250 respectively for their initiatives.

"Our students demonstrated true leadership skills throughout the year by coupling all the thought and effort they put into their initiatives with empathy and a deep sense of personal responsibility toward the community," said Leopoldo Llinas, program director for Agents of Change at Palmer Trinity School.

Below are the initiatives that were presented:

Healthy Habits Miami promotes healthier eating habits by offering better food choices to its customers within the community. The first product in its line is snow cones. Proceeds are used to create edible gardens at homeless shelters and provide homeless children with after-school play activities.

Inti Totes aims to reduce plastic bag use and waste by providing customers with a fashionable, plastic-free alternative: a shopping bag kit made out of cotton. The shopping kits are made by artisans in Peru and are comprised of one large tote bag and two small produce bags.

Rafiki Bracelets sells pairs of friendship bracelets to encourage cultural awareness and sensitivity, as well as to change the way we give. The purchaser keeps one bracelet and becomes the pen pal of the recipient of the matching bracelet in another country. The funds raised go toward scholarships for the students in the foreign country and to spread friendship across the globe. Rafiki is the Swahili word for "friend."

Small Steps Art, a nonprofit organization, aims to support the homeless as they transition off the streets by building confidence and pride through art classes, gear to move while living on the streets, and financial support to attend vocational training. Upcycled art sales provide the funds the homeless need to achieve their employment goals through industry-specific vocational training.

Teenve Productions is a video editing company created and managed entirely by high school students. The company's goal is to get audiences to think, feel or do things differently. They create paid videos for businesses and use the earnings to make pro bono videos for small nonprofit organizations, helping them further advertise their services and continue to make a difference in their community.

We All Matter Miami is a nonprofit that provides children with disabilities the opportunity to do community service work in an inclusion setting. We All Matter Miami promotes events where children with and without disabilities work together to restore endangered lands, clean up beaches, remove invasive species, and plant native plants.
