How Fiberglass Extends the Life of Pools

Catlett, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/29/2013 -- An in-ground swimming pool can be one of the best investments you make for your home. There is nothing more refreshing on a hot day than a dip in the pool, and an in-ground pool is a visual masterpiece that acts as a hub for all social activities at your home. Guests will want to sit near the pool in the evening as they chat and sip drinks. It's a great feature.

However, pools also come with their share of work and costs. Maintaining a pool requires regular, dedicated cleaning, and as the pool ages, it may need to be resurfaced. Small cracks and rough spots can quickly become major problems if left untreated. But resurfacing a pool can be costly, especially if you use plaster.

More and more pool owners are turning to fiberglass as their pool surface of choice. Fiberglass looks great, and just as important, it can dramatically extend the life of your pool, ultimately saving you substantial money.

Here is how fiberglass outperforms plaster:

- Fiberglass is stronger. Fiberglass acts essentially as a "shell" in your pool, with its own structural integrity. Unlike plaster, it is not dependent on the surface it's applied to for strength. That means that it does not warp, shift, settle or crack easily like plaster does. Fiberglass can also be applied over virtually any pre-existing pool surface, whereas plaster does not always adhere well to an existing surface. The result is that plaster chips or wears off while fiberglass keeps looking great.
- Fiberglass saves you money. When you use plaster as your pool surface, you're looking at a need to resurface again within five or six years. If you need to do this every five years over thirty years of owning a home you will end up paying to resurface it six times! Fiberglass is one and done you never need to resurface the pool again. That adds up to substantial savings.
- Fiberglass is easier to keep clean. Fiberglass is highly resistant to algae and chemicals. Plaster has a porous surface which means that dirt, algae, and stains settle into the pores and pits and discolor it over time. Getting these stains off of plaster requires acid washing, and this damages the surface and shortens its lifespan. Fiberglass on the other hand is non-porous and simply has nowhere for these stains to settle into. Algae and dirt can easily be cleaned away creating a maintenance free surface.
- Fiberglass looks & feels better. Fiberglass pool surfaces have a flawless surface coat and they are much whiter than white plaster, making the pool water a clearer, more inviting shade of blue. Also the smooth surface means no more sore toe's or feet you get from the abrasive concrete finish

Has Your One-Piece Fiberglass Pool Cracked

Catlett, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/01/2012 -- It's the worst feeling in the world. After months of being cooped up indoors the sun finally begins to shine, and you start to head back out into the yard. As you begin to clean up and get ready for the summer you notice that your one-piece fiberglass pool has cracked. Now instead of enjoying your summer afternoon you have to worry about how you are going to fix the crack and get back into the summer spirit. Well, before you jump up and call a professional take the time to learn about what exactly is going on with your pool, so you can speak clearly to the repair person when the time comes.

Is it a crack that leaks?
The first thing to determine is if your crack leaks. Oftentimes, fiberglass pools develop what is called "Spider Cracks." Spider cracks are nothing more than thin cracks that shoot out in every direction on the surface of your pool. These cracks often don't cause a pool to leak. Instead, they are only as deep as the gel coat, which is a thin layer placed over the structural part of the pool for added protection. If you fill up the pool and don't notice a leak, chances are you have a spider crack.

Spider cracks are caused mainly by poor installation of the pool, but sometimes by manufacturing errors as well. Because the pool is semi-flexible, when it is installed it must be properly supported on all sides and the bottom. If it is not and the pool shifts too much under the weight of the water, the gel coat can begin to spider crack at stress points. Other times, poor manufacturing can result in spider cracks when parts of the pool are constructed weaker than others.

In order to fix spider cracks, a professional pool repair-person will need to sand down the outer gel coat later and apply a new coat of gel. The problem is that often times these new layers of gel coat don't match the older gel coat that exists. This is why many fiberglass pools are a speckled blue color – to hide any imperfections and prepare for any future repairs that might be needed. This is also why Robinson Restorations provides fiberglass pool lining restoration services.

Argh, it leaks!
If you don't have spider cracks and instead have something that is actually allowing water to leave the pool, then you need to patch the hole as soon as possible. It's important to note that if your pool is in ground and the water is leaking into the hole, you must keep your pool filled with water at all times. If the pool is allowed to float in the hole, it could begin to shift and crack more. Nothing does more damage to a fiberglass pool than shifting and bending.

Having a leak in your fiberglass pool at the beginning of the year is a real drag. However, it's not the end of your summer swimming with a professional pool repair company. Robinson Restorations has over 25 years of experience in repairing, restoring, and remodeling swimming pools, including one-piece fiberglass pools.
3 Signs It's Time to Remodel Your Pool

Catlett, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/01/2012 -- There is no better place to play in the summer than in your own pool. As the summer temperatures begin to rise, so do the waters in the backyard pools around the neighborhood. If your home is one of those on the block that quickly becomes a back yard oasis to neighborhood kids and adults alike, then you want to make sure that it is in excellent shape and ready for a summer of entertaining.

Keeping a pool in tip-top shape is a full time job in the summer, but keeping your pool and the surrounding area looking good is a job that takes place year round. As much as the summer sun works away at the integrity of your pool by showering it with UV rays and breaking down the various surfaces that make up the pool area, winters can prove to be even more harsh with cold temperatures and cycles of freezing and thawing.

If you step out your back door this summer and find your swimming pool in less than perfect shape, consider these three signs that it's time to remodel your pool.

1. The Visible
It was the early 90's when you first had your pool installed. At the time the pink and aquamarine, triangle tiles were in style, but now they seem to clash with just about everyone's taste, not to mention the ragged old tiki bar that limps along in the corner. The number one reason to remodel your pool is simply to bring it up to date with current fashions. Just like any other room in your home, you want your pool area to convey your current thoughts, feelings, and passions. Trade in that Miami Vice theme for something a bit more modern.

2. If It's Broken, Fix It!
Regardless of the type of pool you have, something is bound to break after a number of years have passed. Because swimming pools have a complex physical make-up, as well as a complex pump and water system, it is open for troubles from day one. Damaged pool liners, cracks, splintering deck-boards, and bad pump motors are just a few of the problems that occur in any given summer. And once one part of a pool starts to go, it seems that the rest of the components follow. If you find yourself putting money into big ticket items on your backyard pool, then it might be time for a full remodel from the bottom up.

3. Energy Efficiency
Having a backyard pool might be cheaper than going to the water park, but not by much. Pools are extremely resource intensive, burning through electricity quickly to either run the pumps, heat the pool water, or both. What's worse is that much of this happens 24-7, even when no one is using the pool. If you find that you can no longer afford the electric bill in the summer, look into what a new pump and heating system might save you over the course of a few years. The money you save on utility bills might just buy you your remodel.

Pool remodeling is something to look forward to, not to dread. Robinson Restorations been in business for over 25 years, and we can make pool remodeling a fun experience for you. So take the time to sit back in your favorite outdoor chair, and dream a little dream about how you want your pool to look in the near future. Then call Robinson Restoration, your pool remodeling professional, and we'll make your dreams come true.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Scot Small
Telephone: 855-608-4100
Email: Click to Email Scot Small
Web: http://www.robinsonrestorations.com/
