MamaBear Teaches Parents How Allowance Can Create Financially Responsible Kids (And Adults)

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/01/2015 -- Talking to preschoolers about money may seem strange to most parents. But a recent article by MamaBear, The Ultimate Parenting App™ reminds parents that kids, even young kids, need to start learning about money early in their lives.

In a new blog post titled "Table Talk: Are You Doing Your Child's Allowance All Wrong," MamaBear explains that preschool might be a good time to start talking to your kids about money.

"It may feel too early to talk to a five-year-old about money. But research shows that preschoolers already are learning the difference between wants and needs," said MamaBear CEO Suzanne Horton. "It is in your kids' best interest to start to teach them about how to spend their money appropriately, even at that young age."

The MamaBear article discusses how parents can teach their children about money management by setting up a fair and appropriate allowance program.

"Kids learn through practice so giving them allowance, money that they can choose how to spend, helps them understand money management," Horton continued. "But allowances should be strategic. Parents need an allowance plan in order for the lessons to stick."

The article lists mistakes that parents often make while setting up allowances and goes on to offer a formula for parents trying to decide on how much money to give. It also includes tips on how to explain money management in a simple and concise way that kids will understand.

"It's good for kids to see all sides of money management," Horton said. "We want them to know they can spend as well as save and give."

MamaBear hopes the article will spark conversations around the dinner table and give parents ideas on how to set their kids up for future success.

"A good allowance plan can benefit a child throughout their entire life. Learning money management when you're young lays down a pattern of responsibility. It will help create more financially responsible and successful young adults," said Horton.

MamaBear Grows Their Parenting App with Acquisition of KidNotice

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/25/2015 -- MamaBear®, The Ultimate Parenting App™ is growing, evolving, and cementing their place as the leading all-in-one parenting app that promotes family protection, communication, location, and organization.

Under their new CEO and President Suzanne Horton, the company recently acquired the family-friendly information sharing app, KidNotice.

MamaBear announced news of the acquisition on their blog in the article, "MamaBear Acquires KidNotice to Expand Its Family Safety App to Include Sharing Features."

The article introduces KidNotice and its features to the MamaBear audience while explaining why the acquisition is so important.

"We are committed to growing our feature list so MamaBear can help parents with everything they need," said Suzanne Horton. "And they need tools that open lines of communication between parents and kids, as well as other adults that care for the kids. KidNotice meets that need."

The MamaBear article explains how KidNotice uses technology to connect parents with other child caregivers in order to share vital information that can be used in case of an emergency. The tool shares a child's medical contact, insurance, allergy, and emergency contact information in a secure platform where parents can feel safe knowing their child's information is in the hands of those who need it.

"Technology has pros and cons. We are focused on leveraging the pros to help parents and rectifying the cons to protect kids," said Horton.

MamaBear's acquisition -- and their recent partnership with TeamSnap -- is part of their plan to offer the most comprehensive parenting app on the market. They continue to grow a feature list that promotes secure communication, as well as smartphone and telecommunication protection, social media reputation management, cyberbullying protection, and GPS-enabled connectivity.

"Over 27 million kids in the United Stated have smartphones today, and that number is expected to grow to 39 million in the next two years," Horton said. "As technology and its influence over our families grows, so will MamaBear. We will be there to continually protect and educate while providing the most advanced and useful tools for parents and kids living in this digital age."

MamaBear Recaps Child Protective Services Findings in Free Range Parenting Case

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/18/2015 -- Parenting is back in the news as Child Protective Services recently issued their findings in a Maryland case that many consider a normal situation for free range parents, those parents that believe children should be allowed to explore the world at their own pace and freedom.

CPS found parents Danielle and Alexander Meitiv responsible for "unsubstantiated" child neglect after their children, ages 10 and 6, were picked up by local law enforcement while walking home from a nearby park with their parents' permission.

To make parents aware of this case and the concept of free range parenting, MamaBear®, The Ultimate Parenting App™ recaps the story in a new blog post titled "Safety Ideas For Free Range Parents, Helicopter Parents and Those in Between."

The article looks at the background of the Meitivs' child neglect case and uses the story as lead into the important topic of child safety for all parenting styles.

"There are no instructions when it comes to parenting. Every parent should embrace a parenting philosophy that fits their values and matches the needs of their family and children," said MamaBear CEO Suzanne Horton. "Our MamaBear app is a tool for all parenting styles."

"Parenting style isn't one size fits all. We want to share this story with our readers so they can see examples of varying levels of protection parents provide for their kids and decide what is right for them," Horton continued.

Rather than tell their readers which philosophy is best, the MamaBear article presents options for how parents can protect their children and connect their families in this complex social and digital parenting age.

Horton explained, " We are giving parents tools such as social media monitoring, family mapping, location alerts, the ability to set 'safe and restricted places' so that kids can be easily located, and a variety of ways to understand your child's digital life. These tools create and all-in-one, easy and convenient helper for any parenting style. And in this evolving legal environment where parents can now be held legally responsible for what their kids on doing on social media as well as be held negligent for allowing children to walk home alone under a certain age MamBear is becoming a more critical tool for parents to have in their parenting arsenal."

MamaBear Explains That Parents Could Drive Their Kids to Risky Online Behavior

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/02/2015 -- Parents who are aware of online dangers are constantly working to protect their children from harm. But a new study reports that parents attempting to aggressively direct their children away from harm could actually be leading them toward it.

To bring this information to parents, MamaBear, The Ultimate Parenting App™ recently published the article "Table Talk: Helping Your Teen Avoid Risky Online Behavior."

The article shares information from a new study about how kids respond to parental intervention as it relates to online behavior. The study, conducted by Professor Gustavo Mesch at the University of Haifa, found that kids who have parents who secretly monitor their online behaviors were more likely to engage in risky online behavior.

Conversely, the study found that kids who have parents who communicate with them about their expectations and rules for online behavior were less likely to engage in risky behavior.

"Every parent wants to do whatever they can to protect their kids," explained MamaBear CEO Suzanne Horton. "But sometimes we take those measures too far and actually create an adverse effect. In this case, by overwhelming kids with secretive supervision, we may be pushing them toward the thing we are trying to protect them from."

The study found that the most effective approach toward guiding kids away from risky online behavior isn't strict ' behind their back' monitoring, but rather open communication and trust.

"We encourage parents to have conversations with their kids around the dinner table, and this is definitely one worth having," Horton continued. "Parents shouldn't snoop on their kids online. Instead, they should talk to them openly about risks and expectations. Then, together they should create a plan for how the parents will be involved with the child's online world."

The article goes on to give parents do's and don'ts for handling the topic with their kids, and explains how to find an online monitoring plan that makes both parents and kids comfortable.

MamaBear Lists Their Five Most Popular Resources of 2014

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/21/2015 -- With a rapidly evolving online world, it's important for parents to stay up-to-date on internet and social media trends that could affect their children's safety. But it's not always easy for parents to keep up with new social media platforms, apps, and news.

Trends change fast, and parents don't always have the time or resources to keep up with all the details -- which is why many parents turn to MamaBear.

The company, responsible for the family safety app by the same name, regularly publishes articles on digital media trends and news specifically for parents concerned about their children's safety.

In 2014, MamaBear published dozens of articles about online and offline safety, social media trends, and digital parenting. To highlight the most popular posts from last year, they recently released a roundup listing their reader's favorite posts.

The list is a part of the article "Most Popular 2014 Posts" and includes summaries and links to the posts their readers enjoyed most.

"We know it can be hard for parents to keep a pulse online safety trends. Our kids' digital lives change so fast," said Robyn Spoto, mother of two and co-founder of MamaBear Family Safety App. "We do the research so busy parents don't need to. Our blog helps them stay up-to-date on what they need to know."

Of the top five articles from 2014, three were related to apps. Blog posts that included apps that parents should ban, popular messaging apps, and the top apps for parents were among the list.

The MamaBear blog also publishes articles on topics such as safe driving, dinner table topics, cyberbullying, and general offline safety. You can find the roundup of the most popular posts from 2014 as well as the rest of MamaBear's collection of articles on the MamaBear Blog.

MamaBear Releases 20 Internet Slang Acronyms Every Parent Needs to Know

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/06/2015 -- Teenagers have realized that many parents are keeping an eye on their social media and texting conversations. So in order to hide their messages, teens have adopted a new slang language to keep parents and adults from discovering their conversations related to drinking, drugs, and sex.

To make sure parents know the codes kids are using to hide their messages, MamaBear Family Safety App released the blog post "Cracking The Code on Internet Slang: 20 Acronyms Every Parent Needs to Know."

"Responsible parents pay attention to their child's messaging and social media," said co-founder of MamaBear Family Safety App Robyn Spoto. "But it may not do us much good if we don't understand what they are saying through acronyms."

The article lists acronyms and slang that relate to drinking and drugs such as Broken (Hungover from Alcohol) and CID (The Drug Acid). But many of the terms are related to sex and sexting.

"Inappropriate sexual messaging and sexting can create major reputation damaging consequences and cause safety concern. Most kids don't see it that way, so they engage in the behavior but use code words in case their parents or other adults see their messages," said Spoto.

GNOC (Get naked on camera), LH6 (Let's have sex), and CU46 (See you for sex) are among the sexually suggestive messages that parents need to be aware of. The article notes that even parents who don't think their children would engage in sexting need to keep an eye out. One study shows that a surprising 39% of teens have sent a sexually suggestive text.

Spoto said, "Parents don't want to believe that their child could be sending or receiving sexually suggestive messages. But studies show that over a third of teens are involved with sexting. It's important for parents to realize this and keep an eye out for those inappropriate messages, especially messages encrypted in code."

MamaBear Offers Safety Tips for Parents Giving Smartphones as Holiday Gifts

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/22/2014 -- Smartphones are popular gifts during the holiday season. But for as many kids hoping to find a new phone under the Christmas tree, there are just as many parents unsure about giving their children a gift that comes with so much responsibility.

To help parents who might be nervous about giving their son or daughter their first cell phone, MamaBear Family Safety App has released "Tips For Giving Your Teen Their First Smartphone For the Holidays."

"The debate continues among families about when to give your children their first smartphone," said MamaBear co-founder and mother of two Robyn Spoto. "The connectivity to the world and responsibility of pricey technology is a big step into independence for our children with even more responsibility on the parent to keep our children safe. Only you as the parent will know when you and your child is ready."

The article lists a series of steps that parents can follow to ensure kids use their phones responsibly and appropriately.

"Don't just give your teen a smartphone and allow them to figure it all out on their own," Spoto continued. "You need to teach them how to use it, establish rules and set boundaries appropriate for their age and safety."

The article goes on to explain how creating a "Cell Phone Contract" with usage rules can help hold kids accountable for how they use their phone.

"Tips For Giving Your Teen Their First Smartphone For the Holidays" also looks at how parents can use the phone as a safety tool. They advise parents to use apps like MamaBear that connect parents and children through features like one-tap check-ins, family messaging and location sharing, driving speed alerts and social media monitoring to keep children safe.

MamaBear Helps Parents Find the Perfect Gift for the Tween in the House

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/11/2014 -- Buying gifts for tweens isn't easy. Falling somewhere between a child and a teenager, this age group has outgrown toys but is still young enough to want to a little fun around the holidays. Their gifts need to be the right part entertaining and age appropriate -- not juvenile, but still youthful. For frazzled parents who are down to last minute shopping, that can be a hard balance to find.

That is why MamaBear Family Safety App recently released a "Tween Gift Guide." Intended to help parents who might be struggling to pick out gifts, the guide includes a list of unique and fun gifts that tweens will both enjoy and appreciate.

"When kids hit the ages of 11 and 12, they become hard to buy for," explained Robyn Spoto, who is a mother of two and co-founder of MamaBear. "Toys aren't really an option anymore so you need to be more creative and get gifts more aligned with their interests."

The MamaBear Gift Guide suggests some non-traditional gifts such as giving a day of fun at an event or activity. Among the suggestions are enrolling a child in a class or workshop related to their hobbies or buying tickets to a concert, sporting event, or musical.

"Giving our kids experiences is just as important as giving them gifts," said Spoto. "Tweens are at an age when they start to enjoy trying new things. So instead of giving them an art kit, give them an art class. Sign them up for an activity or buy them tickets to an event, then make a day out of it. Go to lunch, enjoy the event and spend the whole day together. It will give your child a fun experience and bonus time with you."

Other gift ideas include magazine and gift boxes subscriptions and certain electronics that tweens are old enough to understand the value of and take care of throughout the year.

MamaBear Offers Parents a Plan to Create a Safer, Less Stressful Halloween

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/29/2014 -- Halloween can be a scary time, especially for parents who have to be extra prepared for a holiday that comes with additional safety concerns and hazards for their kids.

MamaBear Family Safety app realized that many parents spend Halloween stressed and worried instead of excited and enthusiastic, so they published a blog post to help parents plan, relax, and better enjoy the fun holiday.

The article "16 Steps Parents Can Take Toward a Safer, Less Stressful Halloween" offers tips to help parents find peace of mind during Halloween. Covering subjects like carving pumpkins, dressing up, trick-or-treating, and eating candy, the blog post offers parents simple suggestions for planning ahead in order to create a more enjoyable, less stressful Halloween.

"Halloween is supposed to be a fun time," explained Robyn Spoto, presidnet of Mamabear and mother of two. "But it is also a time to put special attention toward safety. There are plenty of hazards that parents need to prepare for ahead of time so they can enjoy the day and night."

The article offers safety tips for preparing for the days before and after Halloween such as shopping for and preparing costumes, testing face paint and makeup, creating trick-or-treat routes, planning emergency stops, and rationing candy consumption.

"Halloween is one day, but we can't think about it on October 31st alone," Spoto continued. "We need to plan ahead and prepare for days before and after Halloween. The bonus of planning ahead is that it allows parents to really enjoy the holiday rather than worrying the night away."

The tips included in MamaBear's article lead to a more enjoyable holiday for kids as well. Suggestions on how to get younger kids more involved with decorating pumpkins and how to set a trick-or-treating plan for older kids give parents ideas on how to give their kids more independence during the holiday.

Halloween is supposed to be a time for fun for both kids and parents.

Find out how you can create fun, safe, less stressful Halloween this year by reading the full article on the MamaBear Blog http://mamabearapp.com/16-steps-safer-halloween/

MamaBear Warns Parents They May Inadvertently Encourage Distracted Teen Driving

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/25/2014 -- More than 85% of high school juniors and seniors admit they use a cellphone while driving. This may be a shocking statistic for parents who expect their teens to practice safe, non-distracted driving. But the bigger shock for parents might be the realization that they could be part of the problem.

According to an article published by MamaBear Family Safety app (supported by research from the American Psychological Association), the amount of time teens use their phone while driving may be directly influenced by their parents.

The blog post, "Parents Are Most Distracting to Teen Drivers," describes two ways that parents may inadvertently lead their teens to talking and texting while driving.

First, many parents simply set a poor example. When teens see their parents talking and texting while driving, it becomes the norm for them. It doesn't seem like dangerous behavior because their parents are doing it in front of them.

"As parents, we always need to be aware of the examples we are setting," said MamaBear president Robyn Spoto. "If we think it's okay to answer the phone while we are driving, our kids will too."

Second, parents often expect their teens to answer their phone calls or texts immediately. When kids think their parents will be angry if they miss their call, they may use their phones more while driving. In a survey of 395 teens, most stated parents were the contact they talked to most while driving.

"Setting the right expectations with our kids is important," Spoto goes on. "Let them know it's ok to not accept our call while driving and agree on them pulling over to call back or when they arrive at their destination."

The article goes on to list ways that parents can encourage better driving behavior in their teens. Using monitoring programs and setting good examples are among the advice MamaBear offers to parents.

MamaBear Issues a List of Dangerous Social Apps Parents Need to Ban

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/12/2014 -- The online social scene is getting more dangerous for young people. A variety of apps that permit users to create accounts and interact anonymously have triggered a risky situation where bullies can post harassing comments from behind a veil and receive little to no consequences for their actions.

Even with public attention and calls for the sites to reevaluate their platforms and moderation systems, these apps are still growing in popularity, and many parents remain unaware of their potential harms.

To educate parents on the subject, MamaBear Family Safety app released a list of the most dangerous apps and how they work. The blog post, "Social Apps MamaBear Recommends Parents Ban" strongly suggests that parents ask their kids to stop using Yik Yak, Ask.fm, Tinder, Whisper, and Secret.

"These apps aren't as popular and recognizable as platforms like Twitter and Facebook," said MamaBear president Robyn Spoto, "so many parents don't even realize they are out there, let alone the dangers they may bring. But they need to know they exist, and they need to tell their kids to stay away from them."

The MamaBear article calls out inefficient moderation systems as one of the primary problems with the apps.

"These new social platforms don't have the processes and programs in place yet to Effectively protect young users or stop them from accessing the apps," Spoto continued.

While at least two of the apps have a 17+ age restriction, younger kids are still regularly accessing the platforms. Until proper regulation and banning systems are set in place, MamaBear says it's best to ban the apps and direct kids to safer social spaces.

MamaBear Shares Important Online Safety Tips for Kids Going Back to School

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/29/2014 -- All around the country, kids are getting ready to go back to school. Parents are preparing by buying school supplies, stocking up on lunch snacks, and this year, maybe even buying a new phone for their child.

"Many parents buy smartphones for their kids to take to school. Some parents feel safer when their kids have a phone because it feels like a reliable, direct connection to them," said MamaBear president Robyn Spoto, who has two sons of her own. "But many parents aren't thinking about the potential dangers that phones and unlimited access to the internet may bring. They also don't realize that those dangers may be magnified once students go back to school."

At school, students may have unsupervised access to their phone or their friends' phones for the first time, and they may have more opportunities to get online through classroom computers. So parents need to have important conversations about online safety before sending their kids back to school.

To help parents prepare, MamaBear Family Safety app has released a blog post titled, "8 Back to School Internet Safety Tips for Kids." The article lists important online safety conversations that parents should have with their kids before they go back to school. The tips are designed to help kids make better decisions when they have access to the internet, and cover topics such as appropriate social media sharing and interactions to dealing with online bullies and setting privacy settings.

MamaBear's conversation starters are perfect for parents who don't fully understand online dangers and don't know how to best approach the topic with their child or teen.
Because kids aren't talking about online harassment, many parents don't realize how common it actually is.

Kids are keeping quiet about online bullying, but that doesn't mean it's not happening. Seventy percent of surveyed kids said they had seen online bullying at least once.

To make sure that parents are aware of just how common social media bullying is, the team at MamaBear Family Safety app has released the blog post, "Social Media, Bullying and What You Can Do to Help." The article offers best practices for protecting kids from social media harassment then goes on to explain what to do in the event that a child is involved with an online bully.

"We want parents in the know about bullying," said parent and MamaBear president Robyn Spoto. "Since kids aren't talking about it, we wanted to make sure that parents know all the details and are aware of when it happens. More importantly, we want parents to be prepared to handle the situation in the event that their child or one of their child's friends encounters an online bully."

The MamaBear article lists steps that parents can take from the moment they learn about a case of online bullying. It also lists webpages where parents can file complaints or report abuse on popular social media sites. The blog post's tips and resources are a great aid to any parent looking to learn more about how to prevent and deal with social media bullying.
While a majority of tweens will use messaging apps harmlessly, there are some hidden dangers associated with messaging app use that would strike fear into the heart of any parent. The apps are being used by predators to prey on young victims as well as by kids engaging in sexting and cyberbullying.
A new blog post by the team at MamaBear Family Safety app addresses the dangerous side of the popular messaging apps and addresses some solutions for parents as they struggle to get a grip on how their children are communicating with the world through social media on their mobile devices.
"It is so important for parents to stay in the know about what the most popular apps are being used for in the best and worst case scenarios," said MamaBear president Robyn Spoto, a bona fide MamaBear with two curious, active boys of her own. "We recently identified some of the most popular messaging apps and wanted to follow up that post making parents aware of the risks associated with using an app that allows a child to connect with just about anyone, under any guise. We're in the business of protecting children and families, so we wanted to have a frank discussion of how messaging apps are affecting kids."

New Blog Post Asks: Who Is Responsible for Sexting Among Kids?

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/23/2014 -- In 2013, over a third of teens reportedly sent sexually explicit texts and nearly 50 percent were the recipients of such texts, according to one study.

As teens embrace social media and use text messages and messaging apps to send explicit content to friends and strangers alike, they are also being equipped to hide that behavior from their parents. For example, one popular app with teens, Poof!, allows kids to hide certain apps and texts from their cell phones.

The team at MamaBear Family Safety App tries to stay on top of all the trends when it comes to teens and social media behavior. That's why they posted a new blog about the issue of sexting and how parents and those who work with youth can take control of dangerous teen behaviors.

Who exactly is responsible for teen behavior online? The blog post "Taking Responsibility for Kids and Sexting" discusses the issue with a poll asking readers to share their opinion on this question.

"Sexting is perhaps one of the most alarming behaviors that comes with increased mobile and social exposure," said MamaBear president Robyn Spoto, a bona fide MamaBear with two curious, active boys of her own. "We hope our blog and research will stimulate a conversation among parents, educators and law enforcement about how to preserve our kids' digital reputation and the consequences associated with sexting."

Mamabear Team Posts Third Blog in Series Comparing Family Safety Apps

Blog compares MamaBear with Net Nanny

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/07/2014 -- With so many apps and services available on the market designed to help parents keep their kids safe, it can be hard for a parent to choose the right one. The staff at MamaBear took the time compare the features of the MamaBear app with a few other family safety apps for Android and iPhone now on the market in order to help parents make the right selection for their family.

The most recent comparison is among Net Nanny and MamaBear's service.

Net Nanny makes internet filtering software that allows parents to be in control of their children's use of the internet on desktops and mobile devices. Net Nanny "allows in the good, and keeps out the bad. In addition, Net Nanny offers a social media monitoring service which is the overlap of service to MamaBear. MamaBear also offers location monitoring and driving speed awareness.

"It takes time to understand the many services available to help parents keep their kids safe," said MamaBear president Robyn Spoto, a bona fide MamaBear with two curious, active boys of her own. "We wanted to outline the benefits of both Net Nanny and MamaBear to help parents make the best choice to fit their family's need."

Makers of Family Safety App Recommend Family Cell Phone Contract

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/29/2014 -- Sooner or later, almost every tween is going to want or need a cell phone. When that day finally comes, they will have access to a staggering amount of freedom in the palm of their hands.

How can parents keep it all under control? In addition to installing a family safety app like MamaBear on family members' phones to track your kids' locations, monitor their behavior on social media and even track their driving speeds, they can sit down and create a cell phone behavior contract for their kids to read, sign and follow.

The team at MamaBear Family Safety App came up with a list of possible items for a family cell phone contract that can help provide some guidance as the whole family navigates smartphone ownership.

Whether parents use this list word for word or use it to craft their own rules, creating a family cell phone safety contract will help everyone know what the expectations are when their children finally get their first smartphones.

"Many parents feel helpless when they hand that first smartphone over to a young tween," said MamaBear president Robyn Spoto, a bona fide MamaBear with two curious, active boys of her own. "We put together a basic family cell phone contract so that parents can open dialog with their kids about what their expectations are when it comes to cell phone use."

Makers of Family Safety App Address Twerking

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/08/2014 -- In recent weeks, one of the top search phrases at Google is "What is Twerking." It is hard to avoid hearing references almost daily to Miley Cyrus and her recent turn from sweet little Hannah Montana to the twerking, tongue-wagging, pot-smoking-on-stage persona she has become.

The salacious twerking dance has caught fire in some circles, confused and bewildered many parents and has even gotten itself banned at a few schools. The craze will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most infamous trends of 2013.

What is twerking and how can parents stay informed? The team at MamaBear Family Safety App posted a blog addressing the twerking trend.

"Knowing is half the battle," said MamaBear president Robyn Spoto, a bona fide MamaBear with two curious, active boys of her own. "We chuckle about it in my parenting circles, but I'd seriously want to know the context of my kid's twerking conversations."
