Tecate Taps CCL Container to Cash in on Bottlecan Demand

Hermitage, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/25/2009 -- Tecate, one of Mexico's most popular beers, and a leading Mexican export for more than 60 years, has enhanced its image and dramatically increased demand by offering its "cerveza" in aluminum bottles produced by CCL Conatiner, in addition to glass bottles.

Often consumed with lime and salt by its fans, Tecate was first brewed by Alberto Aldrete in 1944 when he took over an old brick building just south of the border from California. Aldrete named his new brew after the town and it quickly became popular throughout Baja, California for its full rich flavor. In 1954 the brewery was sold to Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma, but it is still produced in the Tecate Brewery.

Although far from being the first Latin American beverage to utilize aluminum in its bottling, the introduction of Tecate in a bottlecan is considered a breakthrough for aluminum packaging south of the border according to a spokesperson for CCL Container, the company that pioneered aluminum bottling for the beer industry.

In 2006, the pride of the Dominican Republic, Presidente beer, partnered with CCL to put its premium product in an aluminum bottle that features glow-in-the-dark graphics. Mexico got its first look at a re-sealable aluminum container back in 2005, with the introduction of HOT Hangover Tea, made with herb extracts and amino acids, and distributed in a CCL aluminum bottle.

In 2000, the Japanese first introduced the aluminum bottle, but demand did not reach explosive proportions until CCL Container made a major investment in the technology necessary to make production practical.

Shortly afterward, CCL won a Worldstar Packaging Award for its Aluminum Crown Finish Beer Bottle designed for the Pittsburgh Brewing Company in 2002. CCL put the brewer's flagship lager, Iron City, into its aluminum bottle, making Iron City Lager the world's first beer to convert from glass to aluminum. That conversion also put CCL at the forefront of the movement by brewers to utilize impact-extruded aluminum in lieu of glass bottles.

Since then, a growing number of marketers – from global brands to niche players – have adopted and successfully used aluminum bottling, and for good reason. Aluminum is lightweight, unbreakable and meets the demands of our green-conscious society in that it is 100% recyclable.

The insulating properties of aluminum bottlers are also superior to glass and plastic, so beverages in aluminum cool faster and stay cold longer. In addition, aluminum bottlecans by CCL offer the option of proprietary, food-grade, and internal and external linings to protect product taste and purity.

Beyond functionality, the aesthetic advantages of aluminum bottles also factor in heavily. Aluminum packaging offers the ability to carry high impact graphics not possible on glass. And aluminum bottles from CCL Container are available in a choice of industry-standard, re-sealable closure systems: Crown, CT-38, and CT-28.

A major advance in providing marketers with a competitive edge came with the CCL Container's perfection of top-to-bottom shaping, bringing a new dimension to container aesthetics and ergonomics. New curves and contours complement the high-impact graphics made possible by the advanced inline printing systems at CCL, which have become one of the company's recognized strengths industry wide.

To date, CCL's bottles have been successfully used for new product launches, limited-edition promotions, product line extensions, and as the catalyst for brand revitalization.

Banana Boat Line Gives New CCL Technology Its Day In The Sun

Hermitage, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/07/2009 -- The Banana Boat line of sun protection products seems to have everything under the sun going for it when it comes to protecting us from harmful Ultra Violet rays, including the skin it's in.

According to Cherlyn F. Kelly, the senior purchasing manager for Energizer Personal Care Products, packaging was an important consideration in developing the Banana Boat line, and CCL Container was chosen because the aluminum packager was said to bring so much to the table.

CCL Container, North America's leading manufacturer of recyclable aluminum packaging, worked closely with the Banana Boat design team from the project's inception. As a result, the containers of Banana Boat that now line the shelves of retailers throughout North America and beyond are distinctly different from the package designs of other sun protection products.

For one thing, the Banana Boat aluminum containers have been uniquely shaped by CCL for an easy, non-slip grip. They also feature a unique easy lock, twist and grip delivery system. But according to Charlie Hermann, vice president of sales and marketing for CCL, it's Banana Boat's dimples that really give this line its shine.

"Banana Boat dispensers have a distinctive row of large dimples that are bumped out of the aluminum just above the container's easy grip taper," Herrmann points out. "We work with other sun screen companies, but no one else has the dimple design that Banana Boat chose in order to distinguish its line in this highly competitive category."

Herrmann went on to say that the decision makers behind the Banana Boat line wanted to give the brand every competitive advantage possible. "They asked us to open up our bag of tricks," says Herrmann, "and that's just what we did. Their design engineers worked with ours to incorporate the CCL technologies that were right for them, including the ability to spray from any angle, which comes in handy for both grownups and little ones when you're trying to keep yourself protected from head to toe."

The Banana Boat line offers protection against the UVB rays of the sun that cause sun burn, and the brand is also formulated to minimize the long-term premature aging effects of the sun's UVA rays. In accordance with Skin Cancer Foundation recommendations, Banana Boat offers a range of high SPF sun protection products, including sunscreen for adults, children and babies, sunless tanning lotions, after-sun moisturizing products, and lip balms. The Banana Boat brand is a registered trademark of Sun Pharmaceuticals Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Playtex Products, Inc., whose parent company is Energizer Holdings, Inc.

CCL Container pioneered full body shaping in aluminum packaging, as well as many of the delivery systems and closure systems available today. CCL also offers the option of food-grade internal and external linings to protect product taste and purity. The company's manufacturing facilities are located in Hermitage, PA, Penetang, ONT and Mexico City, Mexico, and all of its facilities are ISO 9002 Registered.

CCL Container Helps 808 Beverages Establish New Spirits Category

Hermitage, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/19/2009 -- The category is "luxury fused spirits," according to Jason Kane, president and CEO of 808 Beverages, and his 808 fusion creation is the one-of-a-kind blend of vodka, Cognac, fruit juice, caffeine and Guarana that is adding a new dimension to the alcoholic beverage industry.

"Our customers are looking for distinctive refreshment and quality, along with some fun," said Kane. "So far, we've been drawing consumers away from all the traditionally categories, but especially from the likes of fortified wines, wine coolers and malt liquors. We have four flavors: Berry Slam, Apple Amp, Mango Beat, and Fruit Blast, and they all have a following."

According to Kane, his company worked closely with CCL Container to establish true differentiation for the 808 product line. "In the alcoholic beverage industry there is a sea of sameness to the brands and products. We were looking to create excitement, as well as the look and feel of quality."

When 808 Beverage decided to bottle in aluminum, they consulted with CCL. "We sought out a packaging partner that could truly differentiate our 808 Beverage line," said Kane. "It didn't take long for us to make CCL our working partner."

CCL Container received industry-wide recognition when it designed and produced the world's first aluminum beer bottle. Since that crowd-pleasing debut, CCL Container has been a driving force in the production of impact extruded aluminum bottles and has been on the forefront of new product introductions in every beverage category.

According to Charlie Hermann, vice president of sales and marketing for CCL, the management of 808 Beverage wanted to incorporate every variable available in terms of packaging originality in order to distinguish their brand. "Given our ability to offer virtually unlimited graphic possibilities, and custom shaping, we were the right choice for them." said Hermann. "Our Full Body Shaping technology allowed for top-to-bottom product differentiation. And all of our bottles are available in a choice of industry standard re-sealable closure systems."

In addition to the shelf appeal of their product, there were other factors that sealed the deal for aluminum at 808 Beverage. "We like the fact that aluminum is 100% recyclable, and saves more energy during recycling than any other packaging material.," said 808's Jason Kane. "We understand that over two-thirds of all the aluminum ever produced is still in use today."

The management of 808 Beverage also favored the lightweight durability of aluminum, allowing consumers to take their product anywhere without risk of breakage or spillage. Also noted was the ability of aluminum to chill its contents faster, and hold lower temperatures longer than other bottling options.

"Above all, we very much appreciated CCL's willingness to work right along side our people in order to come up with our current packaging solution," said Kane. "Packaging is, and always will be, one of our highest priorities when it comes to creating brand distinction for our line."

Rubyy Teams With CCL Container to Energize 24-hour Luxury Lifestyles

Hermitage, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/02/2008 -- If you've been to the Playboy Mansion lately, or you were invited to Prince's Oscar Party or Kanye West's private concert in LA, you may already know what a bottle of Rubyy looks and tastes like. If you haven't, you'll be energized by Rubyy's premium blood-orange flavor and luxury aluminum packaging by CCL Container.

According to Chris Huddleston, Rubyy's Managing Partner, Rubyy was formulated by the industry's leading flavor specialists and is quickly becoming the energy drink of choice for in-the-know working professionals, entertainment industry executives and those maintaining 24-hour lifestyles. "People who have grown up on Orangina and Fresca will find that Rubyy pays homage to those European brands while adding a modern twist with a smooth energy boost," says Huddleston.

Rubyy takes it's name from the deep rich flavor and color of the ruby blood orange, and blends in tangerines, Valencia oranges, vitamins, and natural energy producing ingredients. However, Huddleston says the other distinctively unique feature of this premium energy drink is its packaging, for which Rubyy teamed with CCL Container.

"The feedback on the packaging we developed with CCL Container has been overwhelming," Huddleston pointed out. "A graphically rich aluminum bottle communicates quality far better than a traditional aluminum can, plastic bottle or glass. And our audience makes its buying decisions based on look and feel. Simply adding the words 'super-premium' does not resonate with our target audience."

There is no doubt that Rubyy's award-winning graphics do leave a lasting first impression. But Huddleston claims that first impressions were less important to his company's packaging decision than uniformity and consistency. "While exploring other bottle materials we found tremendous inconsistencies in label application, fill levels and general aesthetics. We solved these problems very simply by working exclusively with CCL's aluminum bottles." Equally important to Rubyy's target demographic are the eco-friendly attributes of the CCL packaging. Rubyy actively promotes that its product is "100% recyclable, resealable, rethinkable."

"We wound up working with CCL purely on the basis of doing our own primary research," explained Huddleston. "All the information we gathered pointed to CCL as the premier aluminum bottle manufacturer in the United States, and CCL turned out to be a great partner. They provided flexible scheduling, quick graphics turnaround, and market support. Our only challenge was finding the right co-packer. When packaging innovation like this comes about, it requires innovation throughout the supply chain. The beverage industry has rarely seen the explosive growth in supplier and consumer demands that we are a part of right now."

Rubyy has partnered with Starwood to offer its unique beverage in all W Hotels worldwide by the end of 2008, and it is already being sold by premium retailers in Los Angeles including Fred Segal, Famima Markets and Bar Nineteen12. Southern Wine & Spirits is also rolling Rubyy out in Miami, and a diet version will be ready in the fourth quarter of 2008, with additional markets carrying both diet and original Rubyy by early 2009.

Rubyy executives are counting heavily on grass roots marketing to bring its product to a sophisticated, yet fast-paced audience thirsting for an alternative to energy drinks with less taste appeal. "Our competitive edge is rooted in brand positioning and taste," says Huddleston. "Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar have been effective in marketing to a specific consumer segment to the point that they have alienated consumers that are looking for a premium experience and a sophisticated flavor."

Aluminum Bottles from CCL Container Capture the Essence of Embodi

Hermitage, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/11/2008 -- Embodi is the all-natural health drink that invites consumers to live longer, live better, and also benefit from the many qualities of aluminum bottles. For the ideal package for this unique drink, CCL Container delivered.

According to Dan Waters, CEO of Vitalita Nutritional Products, Embodi is the only drink to provide health-conscious consumers with all the antioxidant benefits of red wine, without the alcohol. "Our packaging decision was driven by more than the shelf impact of aluminum bottles," says Waters. "It was driven by three key factors: The package had to protect Embodi's unique antioxidants from deteriorating UV rays; it had to be easy for consumers to recycle; and we wanted a bottle that was environmentally friendly to transport. Aluminum is the only medium that fit all of these criteria."

The company that ultimately fulfilled all of Embodi's package requirements was CCL Container. Since the debut of the aluminum bottle in 2003, CCL has been on the forefront of new product introductions in every beverage category. Its durable, re-sealable, fast chilling, aluminum bottles continue to increase in popularity as the number one consumer-friendly alternative to plastic and glass.

"An aluminum bottle was a natural for Embodi's target market," says Charlie Herrmann, vice president of sales and marketing for CCL Container. "In addition to offering high impact graphics not possible on glass, aluminum bottles are 100% recyclable, an important consideration for the health-conscious and environmentally responsible."

"We spent a very long time searching for the right packaging partner to help us launch Embodi," says Waters. "Our research concluded that CCL Container is on the cutting edge of aluminum container development. Most important, as a small beverage company competing amongst giants, we never felt as though we were getting anything but the best service from CCL. As we moved production and delivery dates multiple times, CCL was accommodating every step of the way, delivering our bottles on time and on budget."
The initial feedback on the product and the packaging in the marketplace has been exceptionally positive according to Embodi executives. "Consumers have, in fact, been buying far more product than was anticipated," says Waters.

Embodi is available in Whole Foods stores nationwide. It currently comes in three flavors, with more in development, all of which will most likely remain in an aluminum container according to Waters.

CCL Container is North America's leading manufacturer of recyclable aluminum aerosol cans and bottles for a broad range of market sectors, including beverage and foods, personal care, health care, household and automotive. All of CCL's bottles are available in a choice of industry standard re-sealable closure systems and offer the added option of food-grade internal and external linings to protect product taste and purity. The company's manufacturing facilities are located in Hermitage, PA, Penetang, ONT and Mexico City, Mexico. All facilities are ISO 9002 Registered.

Hermitage, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/04/2008 -- CCL Container has announced the scheduled completion of a second manufacturing facility in Mexico in order to better serve its customers throughout Mexico and major North American markets.

The 100,000 sq. ft. facility is expected to be fully operational by the last quarter of 2008, with the first of two production lines running product as early as September. The two high-speed, state-of-the-art lines will produce aluminum aerosol cans and beverage bottles, with a total capacity of 80 million units annually. Both lines are equipped with top-to-bottom container shaping capability, in addition to eight-color lithography.

According to Charlie Herrmann, vice president of sales and marketing for CCL Container, "This will bring our total capacity out of Mexico to over 150 million units per year, with 73 million units currently coming out of our existing Mexico City location on an annual basis."

The new facility is located in San Jose Iturbide Guanajuato, and will initially employ 65 people. Future plans for the facility include phased expansions, and the installation of seven additional high-speed lines to be added over the next several years. "The demand for aluminum packaging in all major market sectors we serve – cosmetics, personal care, healthy lifestyle products and pharmaceuticals – continues to grow," Herrmann added. "We have to stay one step ahead of that demand in order to maintain our position as the industry leader."

The final stages of facility development are being managed for CCL Container by Juan Carlos Bernal, general manager of the new plant. The new facility is situated on highway 57, the road known as "NAFTA way." According to Bernal, "The area around the city of Queretaro, known as the Bajio Area, has been attracting major US corporations for years. Logistically, the area is a superb point of distribution for major markets inside Mexico, and throughout North America. It sits on the backbone of transportation between Mexico and the U.S."

CCL Container is North America's leading manufacturer of recyclable aluminum aerosol cans and bottles. All of CCL's bottles are available in a choice of industry standard re-sealable closure systems and offer the added option of food-grade internal and external linings to protect product taste and purity. The new Mexico-based plant joins the company's existing manufacturing facilities in Hermitage, PA, Penetang, ONT and Mexico City, Mexico. All of CCL Container's facilities are ISO 9002 Registered.

Form Follows Function for the M13 Line of Beverages Packaged in Aluminum Bottle by CCL Container

Hermitage, PA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/15/2008 -- In a classic case of form following function, the makers of M13™ functional beverages teamed up with CCL Container for its new line of health beverages.

For product "functionality," the M13 line depends on formulist Dr. Sunny Lee, a traditional Chinese medical practitioner with a deep understanding of both ancient and modern health principles. For package "form," M13 turned to CCL Container and its aluminum beverage bottle.

"We did an extensive search to find the right package," said Neil Simonton, marketing director for M13. "CCL Container was the only company that met our requirements in terms of package aesthetics and recyclability, and they worked with us very closely to overcome the many challenges associated with a new product launch."

The three products in the new M13 line are initially being distributed in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and L.A. All three beverages infuse locally grown antioxidant fruit juice with ancient Chinese healing herbs and essential vitamins. One delivers a powerful energy boost using natural caffeine derived from yerba mate leaf. Another focuses on caffeine-free energy support and daily health maintenance. The third is said to naturally relieve body tension and stress while neutralizing toxins within the body.

When M13 management was asked why they put their new line of healthy-living beverages in aluminum bottles, several functional reasons were cited. One consideration was opacity. The makers of M13 needed to protect their juice from UV light, keeping it fresh on the shelf without the need for chemical preservatives. They also favored the lightweight durability of aluminum, allowing consumers to take their product anywhere without risk of breakage or spillage. Then there was the matter of renewability. Simonton added, "Aluminum has the highest recycling rate of any beverage packaging material."

Beyond functionality, the aesthetic advantages of aluminum bottles also factored into M13's package selection. According to Simonton, "We set out to make M13 the functional beverage brand of choice for discerning consumers, and our aluminum bottles have helped us achieve that positioning. We like the look and feel of matte-finish aluminum, and it has given our brand a distinct competitive advantage in the marketplace."

The development process was not without its challenges, Simonton noted. "We kept pushing the envelope in order to produce the most distinctive package possible. CCL's technical team never lost patience. They came up with creative solutions to meet our particular package requirements at every turn."

Functional juice straddles several beverage categories, so it competes for consumer dollars on a number of fronts, including antioxidant juice beverages and energy drinks. "We feel our packaging is and will continue to be an integral part of M13's success," Simonton added. "Feedback so far has been extremely favorable. People tell us they like the clean, utilitarian look and the matte finish. We've even been invited to enter the bottle in a global packaging design competition."
