Pinnacle Strategies Shares Project Management that Reconsiders Rules on Materials and Suppliers

Plano, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/30/2013 -- Mark Woeppel, President and CEO of Pinnacle Strategies, recently posted the monthly blog on the company's website. Woeppel shared, "Industry leaders should look at supply chain policies to find possibilities to increase output – examining rules and assumptions regarding materials and suppliers. There is extra capacity; so the investment in this is zero. If the company is internally constrained, finding that excess capacity means more sales, more productivity, and more profit. The ROI will be infinite."

The goal is to change the rules that are affecting the ability to make more. In Woeppel's last post, he wrote about challenging the assumptions. The supply chain or supplier strategy is a great place to start.

Most material specifications are established by a default rule of thumb established to minimize risk of failure. The result is a conservative specification that will cover a wide swath of situations. Seldom are material specifications done to maximize throughput.

Everything is available to challenge: dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, storage requirements, and quality checks, etc. Another place suggested is to look deeper into the supply chain such as the suppliers' suppliers. What is challenged will be determined by what gives the most productivity.

Pinnacle Strategies found when working with a boom manufacturer, that the output of a particular type of boom was constrained (at all suppliers) by a worldwide scarcity of a key component. This scarcity was about three links earlier in the supply chain. Pinnacle Strategies looked for a substitution. Working with the engineering and supply chain teams at the supplier and the customer, they found another material, which was significantly cheaper, allowing them to purchase three times the amount of the new material for the same price as the old material. With all the materials in full supply, the boom manufacturer was able to boost output tenfold!

SBM Offshore's Atlantia division was charged with fulfilling a warranty cable replacement project for one of SBM's clients. Under the most stable conditions, replacing undersea cables is a complicated process, but after initial planning had begun, changing requirements significantly increased the project's complexity. With just one week's notice, the installation date moved up a full month. And the number of cables to be replaced increased from four to nine.

Reliable Machinists Corporation (RMC) is a family owned provider of precision machining and fabrication services with rapid response capabilities and a focus on customer service. Expertise in the energy industry is an asset for the production of tubing hangers, Valve bodies, and other precision components for oil and energy applications.

Recently a special situation triggered the search for a unique solution. Luu Triet, Operations Manager for RMC described the circumstances, noting, "One of the products we machine for our customer is a Valve body ranging from 18 inches to 48 inches. Pinnacle Strategies Saves on Costs by Rebalancing Resource to Maximize Flow

Plano, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/03/2013 -- Mark Woeppel, President and CEO of Pinnacle Strategies, recently posted the monthly blog entitled, "Rebalance Resources to Maximize Flow," on the company's website. Woeppel shared, "Knowing what (and where) the drum is for your process does not mean that you should run out and buy more capacity to fix it. In my previous blog post, I discussed that before you react to an increase of demand and making any changes in the process, you first need to analyze the process and identify the constraint. Only then will you know where and what to change (to change the behavior or the entire process)."

Before a company starts throwing additional money at the situation, find ways to make more effective use of current resources. To find ways to increase output a few questions should be asked:

Woeppel asked, "Do all the resources at the constraint take a break or lunch at the same time? Often, staggering lunches and breaks at the constraint will give you a big boost. The numbers work, too. Let's say you spend an hour a day for lunch and breaks. In an 8-hour day, that's 12.5% more output."

If the constraint is a machine, there is one skill set to run the machine, and another to set it up. Often running the machine is loading and unloading parts. Automation is a better choice, but often companies can add a person faster. This may be the constraint. Every additional hour industry leaders can get at the constraint equals one hour of sales.

The call would lead Pinnacle on an international mission to boost output of spill fighting equipment and then to help organize a historic mop up -- the cleaning of more than 10,000 boats, ships and rigs."

BP found the entire U.S. production of critical cleanup resources was not enough. Oil was spreading -- often where no workers, booms, skimmers or other equipment existed to contain it. As with many success stories, Pinnacle Strategies' (http://www.pinnacle-strategies.com) involvement started with an incidental connection. Clint Wood, the BP executive in charge of supply, recalled a time years earlier when he briefly collaborated with Woeppel to boost production.

Now, Wood needed decontamination suits, boats, detergents, real estate for clean-up sites, containment boom, dock space, boats, and other scarce material. More than equipment, Wood realized he needed to mobilize minds.

Wood said. "I've always been an early adopter. I wanted to see if we could use Theory of Constraints to increase throughput." One early visit was to a Walker, Michigan factory. Prestige Products was asked by BP to supply as much oil containment boom as it could.

"When we started manufacturing boom, 500 feet a day was the biggest order anybody could handle," said Brian Rickel, Prestige's owner. "A single order on the scale BP wanted would surpass the entire capacity of every boom manufacturer in the country combined." Rickel increased staff to 75 from five and raised production to 12,800 feet daily and felt he had reached a limit. Prestige ended up making 1 million feet of boom for BP.
