Advances in High Pressure Mass Spectrometry Presented at HPLC and ASMS 2014

Technology enhancements and recent product announcement of the world’s first handheld mass spectrometer, M908, show the 908 Devices and UNC-CH collaboration bearing fruit.

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/23/2014 -- 908 Devices, a pioneer of purpose-built analytical devices for chemical analysis, and research partners at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) continue to make waves on the analytical event circuit with revolutionary High Pressure Mass Spectrometry (HPMS) technology. Professor J. Michael Ramsey and his team from (UNC-CH) delivered a total of 12 presentations at this year's HPLC and ASMS conferences touting new performance breakthroughs in HPMS. These presentations demonstrate that the collaboration between the Ramsey group and 908 Devices continues to push the boundaries and capabilities of truly handheld mass spectrometry.

Numerous technology firsts were presented, including the successful demonstration of HPMS coupled with gas and liquid separation techniques, a critical milestone for applications in the life-sciences where sample matrices can be complex. With the use of an integrated capillary electrophoresis/nano-electrospray microfluidic chip the HPMS platform demonstrated rapid analysis of amino acids, peptides, and proteins. HPMS was also shown for the first time as an extremely compact and power efficient splitlessly-coupled detector for gas chromatography.

Several HPMS performance improvements presented at the conferences will have immediate benefit to the company's first product, M908, a rugged handheld mass spectrometry platform for safety & security applications. Enhancements to stretched-length ion traps (SLIT geometries) showed significantly higher sensitivity relative to cylindrical traps and can be incorporated in the current M908 handheld system. Also of specific importance to fieldable MS is the capability to operate the system in air with no added buffer gas – which is key to minimizing logistics burden. Presentations documented advances providing sub-amu resolution at pressures more than a thousand-fold higher than conventional ion trap mass spectrometers.

"There has been a remarkable shift in demand from very complex catch-all laboratory systems to purpose-built and user-centric analytical tools" said Dr. Christopher Brown, chief technical officer and co-founder of 908 Devices. "With our partners at UNC, 908 Devices is ideally positioned in the vanguard of this movement. The torrent of advances in HPMS will immediately benefit our current safety and security customers through product enhancements and new product opportunities, and it also opens doors to completely new opportunities in environmental, life-sciences and beyond. We are beyond being 'excited' by the possibilities that HPMS continues to deliver on."

The UNC-CH research team is led by Professor J. Michael Ramsey, the Minnie N. Goldby Distinguished Professor of Chemistry in UNC-CH's College of Arts and Sciences, with additional multiple appointments in the UNC-CH School of Medicine. Prof. Ramsey is also a co-founder of 908 Devices, a member of its Board of Directors and the Science Founder of Caliper Life Sciences. 908 Devices has exclusive license to a broad portfolio of patents developed by the research team at the University that contributes to the design and manufacture of simple-to-operate, ultra-compact chemical analysis tools.

"Our technical presentations outlined many of the achievements of the team here at UNC-CH to advance the performance of high-pressure mass spectrometry," said Prof. Ramsey. "We are focused on honing the capabilities of this truly unique technology and see a suite of practical applications for its implementation. It is equally exciting for the UNC-CH team to see 908 Devices pushing the capabilities of this technology in products that completely change the benchmarks for mass spectrometry portability and usability."

The first revolutionary product powered by HPMS technology was announced in March 2014. The M908 weighs less than 2 kg (4.4 lbs) and is battery powered for continuous operation in the field. It has been designed to meet commercial and military standards (MIL-STD-810G); which require repeated drops onto concrete and metal, storage and operation in extreme hot and cold conditions, and ingress protection to dust and water. The patented HPMS technology that powers M908 uses diminutive ion traps that measure less than a millimeter in critical dimensions and are capable of operation at 10,000 times higher pressure than those in conventional MS systems. This enables the use of small, rugged vacuum pumps, micro ionizers, detectors and efficient electronics.

908 Devices' Research Partner Presents Ground Breaking Research on Mass Spectrometry

908 Devices’ research partner, the group of Prof. J. Michael Ramsey at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), made a number of ground breaking presentations at the ASMS conference in June which all advanced the rapidly evolving field of High Pressure Mass Spectrometry (HPMS™).

Boston, MA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/14/2013 -- 908 Devices, an innovator in point-of-use chemical analysis, continues to benefit from its research partnership with the group of Prof. J. Michael Ramsey at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). The Ramsey team made a total of eight research presentations at the American Society of Mass Spectrometry Conference in June, all advancing the rapidly evolving field of High Pressure Mass Spectrometry (HPMS™).

The UNC-CH presentations covered substantial advances in both the theoretical understanding and practical performance of miniature ion traps, ionizers and detectors at operating pressures up to, and beyond, 1 torr – HPMS™. Multiple presentations explored the theoretical attributes of ion trajectories as a function of trap fabrication geometries and drive parameters. One of the most exciting areas of research involves a new stretched length ion trap geometry that experimentally demonstrated a near order-of-magnitude increase in ion-trapping capacities compared to cylindrical geometries. Further, a presentation on the influence of drive frequency demonstrated sub-amu resolutions from miniature ion trap arrays operating in the HPMS™ regime.

908 Devices has exclusive license to a broad portfolio of patents developed by the research team at the University that contributes to the design and manufacture of simple-to-operate, ultra-compact chemical detection and analysis tools. The HPMS™ projects presented by the Ramsey group received support from the US Department of Defense (DOD) signifying the value placed on these capabilities by the safety and security community.

Dr. Chris Brown, Co-founder and CTO of 908 Devices highlighted the impressive nature of the research presented by saying, "The Ramsey group at UNC-CH has a large, focused and productive effort in the field of miniaturized mass spectrometry. Collaboration between our teams continues to be mutually beneficial and we are extremely excited about working together to successfully bring the powerful capabilities of mass spectrometry out of the laboratory into the hands of the first responder."

These HPMS™ developments are crucial to the successful creation of highly sensitive and selective miniaturized mass spectrometry tools by 908 Devices. The initial product focus is on safety and security markets, but the broad platform of 908 Devices' simple, rugged and cost-effective MS analyzers will address customer problems across diverse markets.

The UNC-CH research team is led by Professor J. Michael Ramsey, who is the Minnie N. Goldby Distinguished Professor of Chemistry in UNC-CH's College of Arts and Sciences, at the University with additional multiple appointments in the UNC-CH School of Medicine. Prof. Ramsey is also a co-founder of 908 Devices, a member of its Board of Directors and the Science Founder of Caliper Life Sciences.

"Our presentations outlined clearly a number of innovative advances in miniaturized mass spectrometry, a dynamic field with myriad practical applications outside the lab," said Prof. Ramsey.

Sci-Fi Like Tiny Tech Helps Sense & ID Thousands of Chemicals at Trace Amounts

Start-up Licenses Broad IP Portfolio for Ultra-Compact Hazardous Chemical Detectors and Chemical Analysis Tools

Boston, MA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/12/2013 -- 908 Devices Inc. has secured exclusive license to a broad portfolio of patents that enable simple-to-operate, ultra-compact chemical detection and analysis tools. Humans have an increasing need to detect and identify chemicals in our surroundings instantly, whenever and wherever they are found; beyond conventional centralized laboratories where scientific equipment is housed. 908 Devices is making revolutionary tools that can both detect and identify a large set of chemical hazards in a battery-operated handheld that is robust enough to exceed military standards and be trusted for immediate action in the field. For research biologists and chemists, the same robust technology core enables personal analysis tools, small and simple enough for every work area.

On Sci-Fi television, in real forensic crime laboratories, and in analytical laboratories around the world, the technique of Mass Spectrometry is the well-established gold standard for food safety testing, explosives and chemical threat forensics, biotechnology research, drugs-of-abuse testing and clinical diagnostics. This broad utility comes both from Mass Spec's high selectivity (it is able to differentiate millions of different chemicals) and from its extreme sensitivity (it is able to measure quantities as low as 1 part in a billion or better). Unlike television, until now, complexity, large size, and high costs restricted these capabilities to highly skilled scientists in laboratory environments. Samples, if they could be collected and moved, had to be transported to the instruments.

The licensed patent portfolio results from over $17.5M of government research funding through the agencies of DARPA, DOE and DTRA. Prof. J. Michael Ramsey and collaborators developed the technology, initially at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and later at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The portfolio comprehensively covers key aspects and sub-systems required to enable micro-scale mass spectrometry tools including ionization, ion traps and detection schemes. Prof. Ramsey is both the Goldby Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill and the Science Founder of 908 Devices. He was also the Science Founder of Caliper Life Sciences (NASDAQ: CALP), acquired by PerkinElmer (NYSE: PKI) in 2011 for $600M.

"This agreement enables us to transform how chemical analysis is done today by taking the most widely accepted and broadly capable analytical technique of mass spectrometry and making it an elegantly simple tool. These tools are so tiny, it can be used at the point-of-need by the person who has the questions and needs an answer." said Dr. Kevin J. Knopp, CEO and a founder of 908 Devices. "By doing this we will be helping our customers reduce logistics burdens, reduce delay, and enable accelerated response, action, and science," said Dr. Knopp.

"It is extremely gratifying to see the past 10-years of research work coming into commercial implementation," said Prof. J. Michael Ramsey. "908 Devices has assembled a remarkable team of industry and technology experts with a proven track record of bringing previously complex, laboratory technologies to the field."

"Innovation in Mass Spectrometry and separation techniques at ORNL dates back to the Manhattan Project," said ORNL Director Thom Mason. "We are pleased to celebrate the serial entrepreneurship in Professor Ramsey's work, having first successfully licensed micro-fluidic separation technology to Caliper Technologies and now, with this agreement, for micro-Mass Spectrometry with 908 Devices."
