Small Change to Lead a Longer, Healthier Life

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- It's often the little things that can make large differences in overall health. Things like taking the stairs at work, or doing an extra load of laundry and straightening up the house can have huge benefits for overall wellbeing.

Experts have long recommended ways to increase consumption of healthy fats and oils, and one little way to do this is to consume a handful of nuts each day. Walnuts, almonds, and other nuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are good for heart health and an overall feeling of well-being. A research from Harvard found that those who consumed nuts on a daily basis were 20 percent less likely to die from any cause during the study than those who didn't.

With increasing consumption of nuts, decreasing consumption of red meat is another little change individuals can make to improve their health. A study found that women and men who were healthy at the beginning of a study became more likely to develop cancer or heart disease if they consumed red meat on a daily basis. To ensure a diet rich in protein, explore other meat options such as fish, chicken, and low-fat dairy products.

Stress can wreak havoc on mental well-being, and overtime can manifest itself in physical ways. To combat this, it's important to find little ways to reduce stress throughout the day. Taking a walk, eating a healthy snack, or learning how to breathe deeply can all aid in reducing stress. It's been shown that those who meditate on a daily basis have higher levels of telomerase, an enzyme responsible for slowing the effects of aging. With more telomerase, bodies can adapt to physiological changes easier and can actually increase their lifespans.

Little steps make big changes over time, and the sooner we start changing the longer we'll feel the effects of new, beneficial habits.

Physical Activity and Diet Benefit Health, Regardless of Obesity Levels

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- While digits on a scale can help determine body weight, health status is influenced by a number of other determining factors. New research from the Univeristy of Alberta and Alberta Health Services is stressing that overall health is affected by a variety of factors, such as activity levels, television or screen time, and diet, rather than just body weight and BMI.

A study of 181 obese children aged eight to seventeen years showed that over a third could be classified as healthy – meaning not imminently at risk for developing pre-cursor diseases related to type 2 diabetes or other obesity related illnesses. Researchers explained that lifestyle practices – such as how active a person is, what their diet is, and how mentally healthy they are all have an impact on overall health independent of obesity.

Though all the children in the study were classified as obese, those who were metabolically healthy were more active and spent less time watching television then their peers. They also consumed fewer calories, less fat, and less meat than other participants in the study as well. The study included not only measures of obesity, but also looked at bone structure and body mass index (BMI) as well.

Researchers hope these findings can assist physicians and other health professionals in understanding the complex characteristics of obesity, and can help them formulate treatment programs to tackle the issues.

"Since most children with obesity find it challenging to lose weight and maintain weight loss over time, improving metabolic health by being physically active and eating healthfully is an important result in and of itself."

Many communities are making shifts towards encouraging overall wellness in their populations by adding parks, walking and biking paths, and other support systems for those fighting a battle with obesity, or simply looking for ways to become more active. Teaching good nutrition and activity habits when we're young can go a long way in making a person healthier overall despite weight levels.

Strength Training Essential for Better Running Performance

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- Avid runners set goals for themselves around their performance. Many aim for improved race times, longer distances covered, or increased endurance during every day runs. But for training, there are a lot of misconceptions about what runners should and shouldn't do to achieve these goals, and knowing the facts can make all the difference when setting goals and realizing them.

While the focus of most training programs runners adapt will always focus on distance and endurance, there are additional components trainers and runners need to consider. Strength training improves muscle coordination, and can help prevent injury while enhancing performance. Performance is enhanced by improved endurance in muscle fibers, and strength training improves running economy which leads to more endurance and faster times overall.

With strength training, many feel that runners should lift on their off days to balance out a workout, but research has shown it's preferable for performance to piggy back strength training with daily runs. An example schedule could be to perform a tempo run in the morning and then a 20-30 minute strength training workout later in the day. This also allow for full body recovery on the off days rather than continual training with no rest.

Since running can work all areas of the body, many believe the only area runners really need to focus on is the core. But research has shown that working upper and lower body muscles combined with the muscles of the core increases overall running performances. Rather than assuming one area is inherently weak, it's better to focus on developing strength throughout the whole body.

Runners may think that quick movements during lifting will enhance speed, but it's more important to lift the weights in a slow and controlled manner. Moving quickly incorporates momentum, which takes the pressure off the muscle fibers and can increase risk of injury. To become fast, lift slowly for maximum muscle recruitment and increased overall strength.

For enhanced performance in any sport, overall fitness is required and strength training is an essential part of this goal.

Habits That Can Be Harmful or Helpful

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- Every person has good and badhabits, including several indulgences that may seem harmless overall. But health experts stress caution whenlabeling some habits as "harmless" as they can actually have long lastingconsequences on overall well-being.

It's recently been found thatregardless of activity levels, sitting for long periods of time still hasnegative effects on health. Cells putunder pressure from sitting are more likely to stretch and retain lipids (fats)which can make them expand, and some research has shown that sitting for morethan 3 hours per day can take up to two years off of life expectancy. IN addition to this, many spend too much timein front of a computer screen. This typeof stimulation can put the eyes under strain, and even interrupt sleep patternsif used later at night.

While music has been shown tolift mood and enhance physical performance, listening too loud can damagehearing. Hearing loss affects millionsof Americans, and therefore experts recommend keeping stereo volumes andheadphone levels at 80 decibels or lower. It's estimated that people typically listen to music at up to 110decibels. Turn the volume down toprotect the ears.

Pre-packaged meals may seem likean easy way to manage portions for calorie control, but so many of thesepackaged meals are filled with MSG and sometimes more than a day's worth ofsodium. Eating processed foods andconsuming these high amounts of sodium and other chemicals can slow digestion, lead to retained fluid, and wreak havoc on blood pressure. Be sure to read labels when purchasingpackaged foods, or better yet, stick to whole foods even if it takes longer toprepare them.

Though daily lives seem to fill upquick with activities and responsibilities, skimping on sleep to try and catchup can lead to impaired mental function, or even depression like symptoms. Stroke, diabetes, and obesity risk is alsoraised by not allowing for enough rest. 6.5 to 7.5 hours per night is what experts recommend for properrecovery.

Making these small changes to"harmless" habits can improve health in minor ways, even if it's just enough togive a person the energy to make larger changes for bigger benefits.

New Study Shows Benefit of Musical Movement

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- One of the big draws for group fitness classes is the opportunity to work out to music. Many classes are choreographed revolving around certain songs or types of music, and people often find that musical selection can enhance the benefits of their exercise program.

A study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness detailed how music increases work output during activity, enhances metabolic efficiency, improves mood, encourages rhythmic movement and cognitive function, and can reduce the rate of perceived exertion. This last benefit can offer some reasons as to why many who exercise to music feel that more energized and less exhausted at the end of a low or high-intensity workout. This could be because music causes an influx of stimuli to the brain, distracting the mind from the "discomfort" often felt during exercise.

Although music is used in a variety of exercise classes, many are motivated to keep moving during high-intensity exercises due to this distraction from what the body is faced with. While music doesn't change perceptions of fatigue or the output the body gives, it can make a person feel more positive about the sensations they are feeling and more likely to commit to finishing the workout.

Another piece of the puzzle the study found was that music actually reduced the metabolic demands on the body and promoted greater efficiency of metabolic processes. In the 2012 study, researchers observed that cyclists who pedaled in time to music required less oxygen than their counterparts who exercised in silence. According to study authors, it appears that music helps us to achieve a degree of efficiency in movements that actually requires less overall energy.

If group fitness classes to music are not of interest, many have achieved the same benefits by making a "playlist" on their iPod or other musical device and running, walking, or even lifting along to it. It distracts the mind, enhances the workout, and appeases our need for sensory input to keep us focused and on task. Try adding music to a workout and see what benefits it can offer the body.

Obesity Is More Than Just What We Eat

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- CDC experts estimate that over 35 percent of adults and 17 percent of children in America are obese, and therefore at risk for the various diseases (heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer) that go along with obesity. Though usually treated with a combination of diet, nutrition counseling, and exercise, scientists are researching deeper into the human body to understand how obesity develops on a cellular level.

Using state-of-the-art technology to analyze fat accumulation within cells, researchers from Tel Aviv University discovered that nutrition is not the only factor that is driving up obesity rates; "cellular expansion" plays a role in fat production as well.

The researchers conducting the study wanted to find out why a sedentary lifestyle can result in obesity even when coupled with a fairly nutritious diet. What they found is that fat cells exposed to sustained pressure, such as what happens to the hips and glutes while sitting down, experienced accelerated growth of lipid droplets, which are molecules that carry fats.

Once the lipid droplets are accumulated, the cellular mechanics change and they expand in shape and composition. Therefore, the more sedentary a lifestyle is, the more pressure cells are under and when they receive fatty deposits, this pushes the cells to expand and take up more room.

Knowing and understanding these mechanics highlights the importance of being active and reducing the amount of time spent sitting. Nutrition and diet are important to reduce fat intake, but without movement the cellular structure cannot change or return to normal shape. Realizing this can also offer practical physical solutions to obesity by understanding how to change the environment of cells and how to aid them in producing less fat.

Reduce Allergies for Outdoor Workouts

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- As spring rolls in, many who have been stuck exercising indoors flock outside to enjoy the sun and fresh air of a new season. However, for a few this allure of outdoor activity is dampened by seasonal allergies. Fortunately, for those who suffer from allergies there are ways to help prevent and alleviate a few of the symptoms that will allow individuals to enjoy outdoor activity any time of the year.

If a person knows they're sensitive to pollen in the air, there are sport goggles that they can wear during outdoor activity. If the pollen doesn't make contact with the eyes, symptoms will be reduced or alleviated. Along the same lines, covering the hair with a hat can reduce the pollen carried on the body. Microscopic particles can stick to hair and be brought inside to irritate a person later in the day. A hat can prevent this, and one with a bill can offer additional sun protection.

In addition to covering, we should be rinsing as well. Showering off after outdoor activity will wash pollen residue from skin, and changing clothes right away will keep it from irritating the eyes and nose with movement throughout the day. Washing clothing wore outside will also keep the irritants from floating throughout the house.

Rinsing the outside is good, and we should also focus on rinsing inside the body as well. Experts stress staying adequately hydrated during seasonal allergy periods, as well as continuing to eat a healthy diet. Nutrition and hydration will not only make individuals feel better overall and improve their health, it will enable the body to resist irritation from pollen more effectively.

If after all of these steps a person is still left struggling with allergy symptoms, discuss treatment options with a physician. There are numerous over-the-counter treatment options, though some can make a person drowsy. Talking with a doctor can help narrow down choices and assist in finding an allergy treatment right for each individual case.

The Science Behind Thirst

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- During the midst of exercise, the body craves refreshment and nothing is more satisfying than a drink of cool water. But many report that after a workout, and after thirst has been quenched, drinking extra water is difficult or even unpleasant. Because of this, researchers have been looking into different experiences in the brain that could be the root of this to determine why water tastes so good when were thirsty, and how we can find ways to consume more.

During the research, the brains of participants were scanned as they drank water during different times. When consuming water while thirsty, the area of the brain involved in emotional decision making lit up in response. In contrast, the area of the brain involved in controlling movement lit up when participants forced themselves to keep drinking after quenching their thirst.

Researchers suspect that this instinct to reject water upon quenching thirst evolved in order to prevent a person from drinking too much, which could result in low sodium levels and lead to seizures.

It's important to understand how the brain processes the thirst response in order to adequately regulate consumption of water. The recommended amount an average person should consume each day is roughly 64 ounces per day, but this can vary on activity level.

Instead of measuring an amount out, experts recommend drinking until the body feels satiated – or grabbing a glass of water whenever the smallest hint of thirst strikes.

Adequate hydration is essential for energy, proper digestion, and an overall feeling of satiety and wellness. When thirst is quenched, the body will stop craving more and we should cease drinking. But until then, enjoy the cool water that the body craves as often as possible.

Investigating the Muscle Function in the Naturally Lean

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- There are those who struggle to maintain a toned physique, and those for whom it seems to come effortlessly to. Recent research has offered insight into how the muscles in the inherently thin work differently than in other bodies to give them an edge in the battle for a fit appearance.

Studies have previously found that aerobic capacity is a good predictor of daily physical activity levels, and the higher aerobic capacity a person has, the more fit they generally are. Recent studies however have looked at how muscle physiology affects overall leanness in the body in those with high aerobic capacity or low aerobic capacities.

Looking at female rats from each group, researchers noted that those with higher aerobic capacity levels were consistently more active than their lower capacity peers. While both groups had similar energy expenditure levels while at rest, there were large differences in calorie burn during mild engagement in activity. The rats with leaner genes (high aerobic capacity) demonstrated characteristics of "poor fuel economy." This means that more calories were burned when performing the same exercises as those with fatter genes. This could be because leaner muscles have higher levels of proteins that support energy expenditure rather than those that encourage energy conservation, as those often appear in their heavier counterparts.

Researchers are interested in the results as this could have implications for how we look at metabolism when treating or preventing obesity and other complications. By finding ways to maximize skeletal muscle energy, scientists may be able to take advantage of existing mechanisms that are already existent and utilized in naturally thin people.

The full study is published in the March issue of the American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology and Metabolism. Using the information, scientists hope to capture better ways to treat obesity by encouraging better energy output in muscles of inactive parties.

Common Muscle Gain Mistakes

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2014 -- One of the goals of a diet and exercise program is to lose weight and body fat, but another common goal is actually to gain weight in order to build muscle. Just like with losing weight, there are many common mistakes we make when trying to build muscle. Here are a few common ones to avoid.

Muscle growth is fueled by a high protein diet, but that's not the only component. Those working to grow and develop muscles often cut out carbohydrates completely for they fear of gaining fat or as opposed to the lean muscle. Carbohydrates are important to support energy and digestive processes in the body, and as long as we stick to complex carbohydrates (potatoes with skin, oats, sweet potatoes and fruits) the weight we add will work to define muscle tone instead of add fat.

Another mistake commonly made with food is skipping meals. Muscle requires nutrition to grow, and if the body works hard but doesn't have resources to repair itself it will start to pull from internal resources. Often this is fat, but if fat resources are limited the body will pull from existing muscle – which reduces and inhibits growth overall.

Mentally, it's important to set specific goals to change health, but in order to gain muscle or lose weight these should be given measurements and guidelines to help a person focus on their achievements. An example of a general goal would be "I want to gain more muscle." A more appropriate goal would be "I want to gain 5 pounds of muscle by May 31." This gives a target and provides measureable results.

Finally, training experts recommend seeking out support for any fitness goal. Community support holds a person accountable, keeps them focus, and can provide answers to common questions and a safe space to talk about progress and commiserate with set-backs. This also provides mental benefit by encouraging social interaction, which improves overall health.

By following these tips and correcting habits, muscle weight gain is possible as is any health goal we wish to accomplish.

Exercise Reduces Risk of Breast Cancer

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2014 -- Researchers at the International Prevention Research Institute in France recently revealed a new study showing that women who practiced a sport or engaged in physical activity for at least an hour per day reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by up to 12 percent.

The research was a culmination of information gathered from 37 separate studies published between 1987 and 2013. Over four million women were looked at during the studies, and all were looking at the relationship between physical activity and breast cancer.

Though results varied by tumor type, the overall message was encouraging and should be used as a general guideline in encouraging more activity for the entire female population.

In addition to protecting from breast cancer, other aggressive cancers have been staved off by continuing or engaging in regular physical activity. The best thing about this is that the results and mechanisms for the preventative input of activity is unrelated to BMI level. And it appears according to research that the benefit exists as soon as exercise begins, regardless of age or fitness level.

As physicians and health experts move toward a model of preventative care when treating cancers, obesity, and other illnesses, the benefits of exercise keep appearing on their radars. Physical activity is something that can be done anywhere, at any time, and there are numerous programs available to support those wishing to become more active. It is a low cost, effective way to reduce the risk of diseases that can add weight to the healthcare system and push medical costs higher as they occur in higher numbers.

Researchers remind that it doesn't matter at what age the exercise begins, and that there is no specific type of activity that is "better" than another. Whether a person begins walking daily, takes up cycling, begins tending their garden more or explores dancing for fitness, engagement in physical activity can increase their resistance to breast and other types of aggressive cancers, as well as a whole host of other diseases.

Bone Health Begins in Our Youth

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2014 -- Our bones are the foundation of our structure, surrounded by muscle and tissue that coordinate to move the solid pieces of the puzzle that is the human body. Though they're strong and solid, bones are actually living tissue that responds to forces that act on it; in other words, bones become stronger with activity. Recent research suggests that those who are physically active while they are young grow large, strong bones for life and this effect persists even as we age.

Researchers compared the differences between the throwing and non-throwing arms of major league baseball players at different points in their athletic careers. Once the information was compiled, it was compared with non-baseball players to determine bone size and structure. Over half of the bone size and one third of the bone strength received benefit from activity done during youth, and this benefit continued as the person aged.

It was very impressive to researchers that some of the participants in the study had kept their level of bone density and strength even fifty years after they'd stopped playing the sport.

With this information, the authors of the study suggested that children should exercise for at least an hour per day, and at least a third of this activity should be devoted to weight-bearing activities. Such activities include running, soccer, hopscotch, jumping rope, and other common children's activities.

While we do lose bone mass over time as we age, the benefit of bone built up during youth activity remains. IN addition to this, activity begun at any age has benefits for bone health. Researchers tested participants in the study who remained active, and found that while bones did stop growing as adults, activity slowed and prevented overall bone loss as a person aged.

Building bone density and strength is important to prevent falls or other injuries, and stave off the effects of osteoporosis that commonly appear as we age.

Desk Stretches for a Relaxed Mind and Body

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2014 -- Many people spend hours per day situated at a desk, fixated on a computer screen, working hard to make a living. But constantly sitting in this position can cause muscles to cramp and joints to become compressed, leading to stiffness, achiness, and even fatigue over time. Taking a stretch break daily to move about the office, or even stand up at the desk we sit at, can provide numerous benefits for the body and for the mind.

Even if a walk isn't feasible in a work day, we can still find ways to stretch and move the muscles about. To stretch out the neck, lean the head sideways and draw the ear towards the shoulder. To add to the stretch, bring a hand to the side of the head and gently apply pressure to increase the stretch. Lifting the chin will keep the jaw open and allow for easier flow of breath. Hold for five breaths then repeat on the opposite side.

To continue this stretch into the shoulders and along the ribs, gently tip the upper torso (leaving the hips stationary in a chair or stacked on top of hips) to the side and inhale deeply. Placing the hands behind the head and keeping the elbows wide open will allow for an expansion in the chest, and the deep inhales will stretch along the latissimus dorsi muscles to relieve tension along the spine. Hold for five breaths and repeat on the other side.

A seated twist is another way to release tension in the upper body and along the spine. Sitting straight forward, turn the upper body to look over one shoulder, and gently place the hand against the legs to deepen the twist with resistance. Drawing in the belly and allowing the abdomen to twist along with the body will also add additional digestive benefits.

Finally, stretch the hips by placing one leg across the other, resting the ankle against the knee. Flex the foot of the lifted leg, and lean forward with the chest to stretch the outside of the hip. Repeat on both sides and hold for five breaths during the stretch.

For upper back and hamstrings, perform a downward facing dog using a chair for support. Lean into the chair with the hands, leaving hips lifted and legs long behind the body. Let the chest and shoulders open by pressing into the chair and letting chest drift slightly between the arms. Hold the pose for five breaths and then release.

These few exercises will provide the body with a stretch for the whole body and a release for the mind as well.

Inactivity Can Lead to Decreases in Metabolism

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2014 -- Exercise is important, but so is the time we remain sitting. New research released in the Journal of Applied Physiology has revealed that the time we spend sitting instead of moving about could have a huge impact on metabolism rates regardless of how much exercise we engage in.

Our bodies are designed to be active throughout the day, and while hitting the gym or the outdoors for an hour long run or fitness class is beneficial for heath, coming home and sitting on the couch or in an office chair for the rest of the day can have negative impacts.

Insulin is a hormone the body produces to regulate blood sugars, and overtime a diet high in carbohydrates coupled with extended inactive times can make a person resistant to this hormone. This means that the body must produce more insulin in order to regulate blood sugar, and overtime this production can reach unhealthy levels – which results in type 2 diabetes.

In addition to making insulin rise, inactivity has been shown to increase lipid levels as well. Lipids have been shown to cause cellular expansion when absorbed in large quantities and subjected to long periods of sitting or inactivity. The solution to this isn't as simple as switching to a low-fat diet, because the body needs to be inactive in order to encourage burning of carbohydrates we consume instead of just sugars.

On a structural level, inactivity can actually decrease bone density. Sitting takes weight off the body and bones, and the adage that if "you don't use it you lose it" can actually become a reality. If the bones don't encounter stress each day, they become weaker and more brittle which can lead to injury and more inactivity.

Becoming more active doesn't necessarily involve more time at the gym. It involves getting up and moving about at the office, or straightening up the house on a daily basis. By increasing minor activities, we can decrease overall body mass and make sure metabolism levels stay active and healthy.

The Benefits of Group Exercise

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2014 -- Group exercise classes have become popular in the last several years, and it's become clear that those involved in fitness classes experience different reactions to the type of workouts they are presented with.

Exercising in a group encourages a person to push themselves to new physical levels by offering a guide in the form of an instructor, and competition in the form of other participants in the class. Not only do participants socialize with each other, they motivate each other to work harder and complete the workout by encouraging others to accomplish more. This doesn't always happen through direct interaction between participants; the coach of the class provides an encouragement guide and participants respond to those cues.

In addition to encouragement, social exercise promotes confidence development for those new to fitness and exercise. By interacting with other class participants, whether to ask a question or discuss the class, we find ourselves feeling proud of what our bodies have done, and eager to come back again.

This is another benefit: group exercise classes are addictive. Aside from the physical activity that eventually becomes addictive to the body, fitness classes are also set to music which often motivates participants to work harder. Research has shown that working out to music triggers the brain to work harder, and actually releases hormones to support muscle development and fat burning.

If a person is struggling with finding time to work out on their own, or finding it difficult to stay focused on exercise or worse, dreading their workout, group exercise is something to try for both the physical and social benefit.

Finding Resolution Motivation

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2014 -- It's usually around this time of year that many begin to struggle with the resolutions they set forth at the beginning of the year. No one is entirely sure of why so many lose motivation at this point on the calendar, but in order to find it again here are some tips from fitness experts and personal trainers.

ACE Certified Fitness Trainer Pete McCall advises his clients to pick a fun fitness-related event every three months to get involved with. Whether it's a fun run (such as the color runs or glow runs that are becoming more popular) or a seasonal sport change, it gives a person something to look forward to and a specific training goal that can help keep them focused and engaged in their workout program.

Many trainers mentioned finding ways to hold ourselves accountable for our goals. Some suggested putting the resolutions or goals we've set in place in visible places – such as on the bathroom mirror or on a closet door – so we can see them each day and remember what we hope to accomplish. Not only the goal should be written, but try to specify a reason behind it that will help the mind stay motivated to keep the body going when it gets tough.

Other forms of accountability can also come from support groups or friends and family. A person should reach out to members of a weight loss support group and ask them to help keep goals in sight and hold them accountable at times of struggle. Find strength in numbers by making friends in a fitness class, or join a running or training group to find inspiration and inspire others as well.

It also happens that we can lose sight of goals because results don't happen at the rate we think they should. Defeating self-doubt can derail progress, and it's important to find ways to inspire individuals to keep going. If the number on the scale hasn't moved, take a look at muscle tone and praise oneself for sculpting and toning. And remember, a lower number or smaller jean size doesn't always equal health; any steps we are taking and goals we are setting are improving overall wellbeing for longevity as well as improving appearance. Keep health in mind and work towards maintaining and improving it; the other results will follow with patience and dedication.

Higher Muscle Mass Linked with Longevity

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2014 -- New research released by UCLA suggests thatthe more muscle older Americans develop, the longer their lifespan couldbe. These findings add to a growingamount of evidence that overall body composition is a better predictor ofoverall health and all-cause mortality.

Led by assistant professor Preethi Srikanthanof the endocrinology department of the David Geffen School of Medicine, thestudy found that building muscle mass is an important factor in decreasingoverall metabolic risk. The researchanalyzed data collected from a group of over 3,000 individuals between 1988 and1994. After gathering the base data, they looked at how many of those individuals had passed on from natural causesin 2004.

Overall, the researchers found that all-causemortality was significantly lower in those with more muscle mass and less bodyfat. In other words, the greater amountof muscle mass on the body, the lower risk of death. Realizing this can offer trainers and fitnessprofessionals insight into what makes a person healthy overall.

"Rather than worrying about weight or bodymass index," advised Arun Karlamangla of the geriatrics division of the GeffenSchool of Medicine, "we should be trying to maximize and maintain muscle mass."

Development of muscle mass also has otherbenefits outside of decreased mortality. More lean muscle mass on the body means less room for fat todevelop. It also means the body isstronger and more supported, which can lead to a reduced risk of injury, andmore calories are burned by lean muscle mass which leads to easier control ofweight as a person ages.

This study is an important step inhighlighting the importance of overall fitness and health rather than a setnumber established by BMI which doesn't always factor in muscle mass vs.overall body weight composition.

Fighting Through the Slow Runner Mentality

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/02/2014 -- Individuals run for different reasons: for some, it's the workout of choice in their quest for better health, for others it's a hobby or a competitive sport. But there are those in the population who fear running, or avoid it because they feel their performance lacks, or other runners will consider them slow. But in the long run, performance and speed matter less in health than those who run races for competitive reasons. Fitness can often be a state of mind, as can considering oneself a "slow" runner. If a person wishes to change their physical performance, sometimes all that takes is changing the way they think of themselves.

Numerous studies into sports psychology have proven that positive thinking and self-talk can be powerful motivators or detractors when it comes to fitness and health. The way we frame the context of a workout or a race in our mind can translate into physical performance. Athletes who go into a race with more positive thoughts have better outcomes in performance, and those who run for fitness have better results when they believe in themselves. Reframing self-talk and praising accomplishments no matter how small are important for mental and physical growth.

And physically, there isn't much difference between a "slow" runner and someone who is faster. The feelings of satisfaction, the adrenaline rush, the disappointment of a poor time or the feeling of freedom that's achieved when we're out on the trails are the same no matter the running speed. A person who runs a 5K in 15 minutes accomplished the same distance as someone who ran it in 30 – both worked hard and sacrificed, and experienced individual challenges they had to overcome. Both are successful, speed doesn't matter.

As with other physical activities, it's bad to compare individual goals with the accomplishments of others. There's always going to be someone stronger, or faster, or more fit than the rest of the crowd. What we should focus on is individual accomplishments that we persevered through rather than what another person is doing with their physical fitness.

Finally, the running crowd is notoriously friendly and supportive to individuals of all fitness levels and speed. They support and cheer on all race participants, and are simply glad a person has joined the club rather than obsessed and concerned with the speed of their pace. If running is something an individual wishes to try, speed should not be the focus. Work on building endurance and stamina, and accomplishing short term goals for long term benefits.

Alleviate Pain with Diet and Exercise

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/28/2014 -- Every person deals with achiness or muscle pain from time to time, but if it becomes chronic they often seek out a pill as the answer to the issue. While pain relievers such as Advil or Motrin will work for a short time, one of the best remedies for long-term pain relief is proper diet and exercise.

There are two primary types of body pain: when beginning a fitness program, may experience pain from delayed onset muscle soreness for a few days. Once resolved, the body typically feels more alert and more toned, but if pain lasts longer than a few days medical treatment for an underlying issue.

Muscle pain can be caused by activity, but joint pain is more common and can alert a person to degenerative diseases, arthritis, or other issues. As mentioned above, a pill can provide temporary relief, but stretching and movement of the joints and surrounding tissues can often repair underlying issues that will lead to long-term resolution. Anti-inflammatory diets can also be adapted to assist the pain-relieving movements being done by the body.

Diet and exercise can also reduce body weight which will decrease pressure on the joints, and enable a person to move easier throughout daily life. Muscle tone will also help improve posture and alignment throughout the body, which will lead to reduced pain in common areas such as knees, back and hips. Healthy body weight and better movement are also associated with a reduction in injuries, which prevents short bouts of pain as well as long-term problems.

For diet, eating plenty of anti-inflammatory foods such as fruits and vegetables can help the body's circulatory system function at optimal levels. While proper body alignment will reduce pain by moving joints into proper position, better blood flow will allow white blood cells to rush in and create space between joints allowing for more movement.

When pain is chronic, physician input and advice should be sought, especially in instances of trauma or swelling of joints and tissues. But if a person is experiencing everyday aches, exercise and dietary changes could help alleviate these without physician intervention.

Choosing a Personal Trainer

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2014 -- Research has shown that working out with a partner is an excellent way to stay motivated and make progress on fitness goals. Many choose friends as partners, but other seek out professional support in the form of a personal trainer. When deciding to hire a trainer to assist in reaching fitness goals, here are several things to consider.

No matter what the fitness goal is, a trainer should be credentialed through a trusted organization to assure that they can help a person reach their goals safely and effectively. The National Commissions for Certifying Agencies is the organization in charge of making sure trainers meet certain standards of professionalism and conduct. Ask a trainer what their credentials are during the initial hiring process to ensure that their legitimate in their chosen profession.

In addition to credentials, trainers should also be asked about their experience history. How long have they been training? What kinds of training have they done (weight loss, weight gain, and athletic performance) and how do they handle injuries when they happen? These are important questions to consider when choosing a trainer for an individual fitness goal. Styles can also be considered as well. Some trainers have additional certifications in yoga, or specific exercises such as TRX or Crossfit style workouts. Consider these when making and setting goals to work on with a chosen fitness professional.

Much of the choice will come down to cost, which should be discussed in early meetings, but ti's also important to gauge training style with individual personalities. A person seeking a trainer should know how they want to be motivated, and what kind of approach they want their trainer to take with them. Do they want encouraging support with lots of hand-holding and guidance, or do they need a firm hand to guide and push them beyond what they believe their body capable of? The more a trainer knows what a person expects from them, the better the team can work together to accomplish fitness goals.

Hiring a trainer is a big decision, and one well worth some thought on what a person desires and what certain trainers can offer them. Working together, any fitness or wellness goal is possible with support, guidance, and effort from both parties.

Exercise Motivation from Memories

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2014 -- Memory can be a powerful trigger for motivation. Remembering fun times out with friends can lead a person to engage in more social events, or bringing up a memory of an illness that occurred after eating certain foods can increase aversion to eating them again. Recent research from the University of New Hampshire found that bringing up memories of positive experiences during exercise can actually motivate a person to become more active.

Participants in a study conducted by University researchers were asked to recall positive memories around exercise. When the memories were recalled, these participants showed higher levels of subsequent exercise engagement than with other participants who were not prompted to recall memories. A third group was asked to recall negative memories associated with exercise, and their opinions and intentions were also added into the survey.

At the end of the study, all the participants were asked to rate their future intentions to continue exercising, and eight days later they completed another survey explaining how much physical activity they had engaged in during the prior week. Not only had the positive memory group engaged in more exercise during the week, but the negative memory group had also engaged in more exercise than the group who weren't given any prompts.

Overall, the positive memory prompt group exercised the most out of the three groups surveyed, but this study offers insight into how memory can motivate and increase the amount of time individuals spend investing in their health and wellness.

Lingo for Indoor Cycling Beginners

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2014 -- Cycling is one of the easiest workouts to get into. There is little in way of equipment, clothing is easy to find and comfortable, and the movements are low-impact and easy to follow. However, there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to the lingo often used by avid cyclists. Knowing this lingo can help a person find their way comfortably into this workout and help them get the most out of the time they spend in the cycling studio.

Position is a term often spoken at the beginning of a cycling class, and this refers to where the hands are placed on the handlebars. Most studio cycling bikes have three variations of hand positions: first position is at the base of the handlebars parallel to the hips, second is on the outside of the handles, and third is on the top two points at the end of the handlebars. This helps a person get set up on the bike, and know where to place the hands during different phases of the workout to help balance and work different muscle groups.

Resistance is another term heard in group cycling classes, and refers to how hard the legs have to work to push the pedals. Low resistance will resemble an easy downhill ride, and higher resistance will feel as though the bike is being pushed up a steep hill. Higher resistance is where the work comes in for the class, and low resistance is used for recovery and warm up tracks. Resistance is controlled by a brake on the cycle, often located underneath the handlebars.

The saddle refers to the seat of the bike, of which all riders will be on and off of during the class. When the instructor cues to be out of the saddle, this is where the heavy work in the class will come in with high resistance. To help find a comfortable position in both the saddle and handlebar placement, ask for assistance from the instructor at the beginning of class.

Finally, while many studios label the classes as indoor cycling, spinning is another common term that refers to the same type of exercises. Knowing these key terms will help any beginner get set up and started and riding to better health in no time.

Weight Loss Pace Determines Success

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/21/2014 -- When trying to lose weight, people can be tempted to go straight to the crash-dieting approach to combat impatience and accomplish goals at the same time. Unfortunately, impatience can negatively affect weight loss goals. Immediate results don't always equal long term success.

Consider this – if the body is used to consuming 2,000 calories per day, and then suddenly intake drops by 800-1000 calories per day, it's bound to shed weight as a result. In addition to this, persons trying to lose weight are also likely to become more active, meaning their burning additional calories and not replacing these for energy. While this can provide short term success, in the long run it doesn't even out.

In order to effectively manage metabolism and lose weight, the body needs to be in a state of homeostasis and balance while reducing calorie intake and increasing activity. In order to accomplish this, a gradual reduction in calories is necessary rather than a huge reduction. 15 percent is a good place to start and watch how the scale changes.

While it may seem tedious to take weight loss slowly, doctors say people need to compare choices: is it better to lose 1 pound a week for 50 weeks and keep the weight off, or lose 10 pounds right away, 5 more over the next few weeks, then plateau and eventually give up all together?

While immediate weight loss can feel like a success, it can eventually lead to a reversion into old habits when plateaus are reached. Slow and steady truly wins the race, and in order to accomplish that many need to eat more and exercise the same to reach their weight loss goals.

Doctors Suggest Tips to Alleviate Pain with Diet and Exercise

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/17/2014 -- Every person deals with achiness or muscle pain from time to time, but if it becomes chronic they often seek out a pill as the answer to the issue.

Weight Training Advice for Beginners

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/17/2014 -- There's no arguing that weight training is an important part of fitness and assists with body-fat loss overall, or that weight training improves bone-density, posture, and a variety of other benefits. But given this information, many are still hesitant to try it, or fretful as they don't know all the proper movements, terms, or forms that will help keep them safe and achieve maximum results. This shouldn't hold one back from trying, or seeking out help to add weight training exercises to their fitness routine – and here are some tips about what to expect and look for as a beginner.

When first stepping into the gym and picking up weights, choose weights that are relatively easy to lift to establish a baseline of where a person's strength is and how much they can handle. Even a beginner should be able to perform 10-15 repetitions with a light weight and remains table and comfortable. If at the end of the first set, they feel like they could do more or are not feeling the slightest bit of muscle fatigue, weight should be increased for the second and third sets. One should be able to "feel the burn" in the muscle on the last few repetitions of each set.

Make sure when working through the weights to target each muscle group – and remember there are more than we typically think. Triceps and Biceps yes, but remember chest, back, abdominals and glutes are part of the core, the leg includes hamstrings, quads, and calves, and there are different ways to target the chest and shoulders. Alternate moves on different days to ensure the whole body is worked.

When beginning, start with two days per week and gradually increase to three days. If struggling with which exercises to do for a routine, ask a regular gym goer or a trainer. People with a passion for health do not judge what fitness level a person is at, and being social will not only keep you in proper form for safety, it will increase overall happiness from social interaction.

Above all, don't be afraid of appearances and remember to explore new equipment. The other people in the room are focusing on themselves; they barely notice what is going on around them. Everyone was a beginner at one time, and we all have to start somewhere…and there's no time like the present to begin working on improving health through strength training.
