Smiles of Distinction Now Offers Botox for Patients Who Suffer from Headaches and TMJ

Savage, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/30/2015 -- Botox is a facial therapeutic and esthetic agent used for therapeutic and esthetic facial applications for the treatment of facial pain, medical-facial therapy, dental-facial therapy, TMJ syndrome and occlusal (bad bite) dysfunction. The use of Botox is one of the most underused facial pain therapies. It has tremendous potential to provide new services and better treatment outcomes in every medical and dental practice.

Dr. Schultz recognizes that this is effective therapy at the source of bruxism (excessive tooth grinding) and jaw muscles and facial muscles themselves. "Botox allows these muscles to relax and return to their normal size. The skin covering these muscles also relaxes and many of the facial wrinkles also relax and disappear. It has two positive effects at the same time, pain relief and making patients look younger," Dr. Schultz remarked.

"Botox has proven to be very effective in treating TMJ pain," stated Dr. Schultz. Botox is used as an alternative treatment for TMJ disorders and associated jaw tension and pain. When injected into facial muscles afflicted with soreness and discomfort, Botox relieves TMJ and jaw tension for many patients. The injections often eliminate headaches resulting from teeth grinding, and, in cases of severe stress, Botox can even minimize lock jaw. Dr. Bart Schultz is now offering Botox in his office for his patients who suffer from TMJ pain that hasn't responded well to other medications. Some medications previously used to treat TMJ have side effects or are ineffective.

Some 30% of the population suffers from headaches, a condition that occurs more frequently in women than men. Often these headache symptoms are caused from migraines, stress, and chronic tension. Doctors have proposed several explanations for the disparity, including different levels of external stress and gender-related differences in the psychological response to pain. Research, however, suggests that sex hormones are to blame and circumstantial evidence supports this theory. In women, the headaches typically begin after puberty and tend to decrease in both frequency and intensity after menopause.

Dr. Schultz Integrates 3D Dental Imaging System in Practice

Savage, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/26/2015 -- At Smiles of Distinction, Dr. Bart Schultz's patients enjoy the benefits of the most advanced 3D dental and facial imaging system available. The practice makes use of the award-winning i-CAT® Cone Beam 3D Dental Imaging System for greater clinical control and a more efficient workflow.

Years of experience has taught Dr. Schultz the importance of precision in dentistry, which i-CAT® delivers simply and conveniently. The system gives him direct access to advanced 3D treatment tools for implants and restorations, oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as TMJ and sinuses. Not only is the imaging process quicker, easier, and more cost-effective, it also exposes patients to less radiation than the usual CT scans. In addition, it assesses tooth relationships and relative connection, making it an important piece of equipment for orthodontic treatment.

"Accurately capturing the unique anatomy of individual patients, i-CAT produces high-definition 3D images that allow for the best treatment available," Dr. Schultz declares, "From diagnosis through planning, treatment, and successful case completion, this system provides us with the flexibility to select specifically desired scans in order to manage radiation dose control. We can optimize orthodontic treatment plans, map surgical treatment plans, and place and restore implants with greater accuracy and confidence."

Using i-CAT®, Dr. Schultz is able to map an entire course of treatment, from surgical placement of the implant titanium root, all the way to final restoration. An extensive library of implant templates ensures the best possible selection of implant type, size, location, and viewing bones that are at angles to one another prior to surgery.

"Analyzing the scans together with my patients helps them to better understand their diagnosis, treatment plan, and expected outcome in one convenient visit," he adds.

Dr. Schultz Adds New Cancer Screening Technology

Savage, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/03/2015 -- Oral cancer, a dangerous disease not to be taken lightly, is unfortunately usually detected in its advanced stages when treatment is less effective. Dr. Bart Schultz of Smiles of Distinction understands the importance of early detection. He has therefore recently introduced to his patients a new screening device called OralID, which screens for oral cancer.

"OralID's fluorescence technology uses a blue light that helps me and my team members save lives by identifying cancerous and precancerous lesions in their early stages," says Dr. Schultz, "The screening does not involve any pain, discomfort, needles, or other frightening procedures—just a fluorescent blue light."

Once thought to be an older person's disease, a growing number of young people, both male and female, are recently being diagnosed with oral cancer. This is due to the sexually-transmitted Human Papilloma Virus (HPV16), which is a major risk factor for oral cancer. As a result, everyone is susceptible to the disease and should undergo a screening.

The Oral Cancer Foundation is a national public service, non-profit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and patient support activities. More than 43,000 people in the US were newly diagnosed with oral cancer in 2014. It was the eighth consecutive year in which there was an increase in the rate of occurrence of oral cancer.

"If you find something suspicious like a bump, sore or color change in the tissue of your mouth, lips or tongue, don't wait until your next scheduled appointment. Call us and come in as soon as possible," Dr. Schultz advises.

A patient who diligently goes for a dental check-up at Smiles of Distinction every six months would automatically be tested for any sign of oral cancer twice a year.
Dr. Schultz received his Mastership award in the Academy of General Dentistry and is currently the president of the Minnesota Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Schultz Takes Care of All Family Members

Savage, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/11/2014 -- While family dentistry may be similar to general dentistry, it is unique in some ways. Dr. Bart Schultz accepts patients of all ages—from toddlers to seniors—to make dental care more convenient for families with children. A family dentist takes care of oral hygiene and ensures the optimal health of patients' teeth.

Dr. Schultz maintains, "If you feel more comfortable making a preliminary visit before scheduling an appointment, we can easily arrange it." Children should be as comfortable as possible to allay the fears they may currently have about dental visits.

Choosing a local family dentist may be a good idea; that way, long commutes are not involved. This makes it easier for the whole family to keep up with regular check-ups and in the case of an emergency, Dr. Schultz is nearby.

Dr. Schultz provides preventive dentistry services such as regular cleanings, fluoride treatments and other dental basics. He also practices sedation dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and teeth whitening.

"It is important to come in for regular checkups so that I can identify and treat problems before they require the care of a specialist," says Dr. Schultz. Implants, root canals and treatment for severe periodontal disease are among the examples of procedures requiring the services of a specialist. For example, patients with periodontal disease or who require dental implants may have to go to a periodontist, while those combating diseases of the tooth root, dental pulp, and surrounding tissue may need to see an endodontist.

Visiting Dr. Schultz of Smiles of Distinction every six months minimizes your chances of having to seek additional dental services. Dr. Schultz and his team provide tips and recommendations for brushing, flossing and rinsing to prevent plaque and tooth decay build-up between appointments. Additionally, teeth x-rays are taken regularly so that cavities can be filled as soon as they are identified, before further problems arise.

Dr. Bart Schultz Uses a One-Appointment, CEREC 3D System for Patients' New Crowns

Savage, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/13/2014 -- Usually, it takes two appointments for dental restorations such as porcelain crowns to be completed. This is no longer the case for the patients of Dr. Bart Schultz of Smiles of Distinction, Savage, MN. He uses CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics).

At the first appointment, the existing tooth is numbed and the decayed and weakened parts of the tooth are removed so a temporary crown can be placed; as much of the healthy part of the tooth as possible is saved. If this crown were being sent to the lab to prepare, models of the prepared tooth would need to be taken and that means trays, filled with impression "goop", need to go in the patient's mouth until they solidify.

Those impressions get sent to a lab as a pattern for the permanent crown and can take two weeks or more to be completed. The patient hopes the temporary crown will stay on while waiting for the off-site lab to make the permanent crown. When the lab completes the crown, another appointment is required where, once again, Dr. Schultz numbs the area and the permanent crown is placed for a final fitting.

Dr. Schultz' office is equipped with CEREC, a Microsoft system that uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) to create a 3D representation of the tooth. The system uses a digital camera to take pictures of the tooth. These pictures are transferred to a computer, which will draft the design of the crown.

CEREC, a milling machine located in Dr. Schultz' practice, produces the crown exactly as it was programmed into the machine to render natural, strong and well-fitting crowns in about 10 to 20 minutes. When compared to waiting two weeks for a permanent crown from the lab, the benefits that come with using on-site CEREC are clear.

The CEREC technology is capable of creating veneers, inlays and onlays as well as crowns, which reduces the time for these treatments as well. "Because there is only one appointment needed when we use CEREC, it saves you time and money," says Dr. Schultz.

Dr. Schultz Enhances Smiles and Changes Lives

In the past, people had to live with the smiles they were born with because cosmetic dentistry technology and innovation was not available. Now, Dr. Schultz uses the most up to date techniques and materials, so everyone can experience a beautiful smile.

Savage, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/01/2014 -- Changing an individual's smile can change their life. Cosmetic dentistry not only can make a person feel younger and improve their smile, but it can also improve their teeth, gums, bite and overall dental health.

Dr. Schultz and his team know that most importantly, their job is to make a smile healthy before performing any cosmetic work, such as porcelain crowns or veneers.

Dr. Schultz remarks, "If the foundation isn't strong, the building won't stand -- the same goes for teeth. If the gums aren't healthy, if teeth are missing or if the bite is off, cosmetic procedures just cover up the underlying problem." Dr. Schultz isn't focused on looks only, but also the health of the teeth and gums.

Once Dr. Schultz repairs his patients' structural problems, then he can begin improving the appearance of a smile using porcelain crowns, veneers and tooth-colored fillings that look and feel like natural teeth.

Dr. Schultz states, "I may choose to use other solutions, which include dental implants and teeth whitening. A youthful smile provides a unique influence on how someone can appear to themselves and others."

Enhancing your smile can change everything in a person's personal and professional life. It's so important that the patient is an equal participant in all of the decisions concerning their makeover.

Dr. Schultz takes a blanket-approach and believes in putting together an agreed upon plan for the patients' smile makeover before he begins any work.

Dr. Schultz Practices Dentistry Without Amalgam Fillings

A number of dental patients see Dr. Bart Schultz of Smiles of Distinction in Savage, MN requesting to swap their outdated metal fillings with tooth colored fillings.

Savage, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/25/2014 -- "Almost everything wears away, and your silver fillings will be no different," states Dr. Schultz. "They withstand stressful and heavy biting forces every day, and as they get older, they split, leak and may result in damaging fractures on teeth." With time, metal amalgam fillings have the ability to absorb water, causing them to swell and even break away from the tooth. When this happens, your tooth is much more prone to tooth decay and tenderness.

Patients commonly cite esthetic and health concerns about their old metal fillings. Silver fillings are much less esthetic than tooth-colored fillings. "After all, they scream out, I am a metal filling put here because this person didn't take care of their teeth very well!" remarks Dr. Schultz. Amalgam expands and shrinks when exposed to cold and hot extremes within your mouth. The frequent expansion and contraction with temperature may initiate cracks and fractures in your teeth. "Patients don't realize that the tooth almost certainly had a crack in it well before it ultimately came apart," states Dr. Schultz.

Other concerns are that silver fillings under regular chewing force are vulnerable to metal fatigue or bending and flexing failure, a concept that can be fully understood and shown by repeatedly bending a metal paperclip until it finally breaks. Dr. Schultz comments, "Metal fillings are much harder and less flexible than the teeth they are wedged into. The more time they are on the teeth, the greater force they put on the rest of the weak surfaces of the tooth leading to fractures and cracks." Metal fillings are not cemented into the tooth cavity. They simply sit in the tooth and react under pressure to wedge the tooth apart. Composite fillings, however, are actually glued to the tooth surface and seal the margins closed from invading bacteria.

To get a tooth ready for a composite filling, the tooth can usually be treated more gently and with less healthy tooth structure needing to be removed. Many dentists say that, bonded tooth-colored restoratives are probably safer compared to conventional fillings, given that they do not include mercury. While the American Dental Association (ADA) states the use of mercury in metal fillings is harmless, there is an ongoing discussion inside the dental field regarding the adverse effects of mercury amalgam fillings.

Dr. Bart Schultz Provides Sedation Dentistry to Ease Patients' Fears

Dr. Bart Schultz knows that apprehension in the area of dental care is really a quite typical phobia. Just about 50% of the public feels nervous or uncomfortable about going to the dentist or having dental treatments completed.

Savage, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/10/2013 -- At Smiles of Distinction, all of the staff members have years of working experience in looking after the special needs and worries of more fearful patients. "We are going to do almost anything to tailor the appointment to your needs and worries – even if this means that we merely sit and discuss your worries. You can relax, you're in very good hands," says Dr. Schultz.

Recent technological developments have meant that on many occasions, dentists can get rid of loud drills and give quick and efficient care. Additionally, there are a wide variety of safe anesthetics available to do away with pain and decrease stress and anxiety during routine appointments. Smiles of Distinction has also been uniquely designed to put you at ease by getting rid of many of the items, noises and smells of a normal dental office you might associate with your past dental appointments.

Dr. Schultz and Smiles of Distinction's team have effective sedation capabilities. We can provide many levels of comfort treatment options. A comfort treatment option is topical and local anesthesia. Dr. Schultz begins with a topical solution that 'pre-numbs' the injection area. Then the local anesthesia is used to completely numb the area being treated. This temporarily blocks feeling to the nerve and should last one to two hours or longer. Another option is nitrous oxide gas and studies have proven that nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) is the first and best option for fearful patients. A patient that was anxious going into treatment has become relaxed and calm.

There are no negatives to conscious sedation, but many pluses. One of the major benefits of oral conscious sedation dentistry is that people often feel like their dental procedure lasts a few minutes, when in fact it might have taken hours to perform. Therefore, complex dental procedures such as complete smile makeovers or extensive smile restoration procedures that normally require multiple visits can often be performed in fewer, but longer, appointments. In fact, some patients, who have no fear of the dentist whatsoever, are using sedation dentistry to pack three or four dental appointments into one long one that they won't remember.

The most dramatic option is general anesthesia (IV Sedation). This is a technology used for patients who are terrified to see a dentist and who suffer from poor oral health as a consequence of their fear. At Dr. Schultz's practice, a highly qualified specialist anesthetist attends your dental appointment and gives you medication intravenously that relaxes you completely. Even in your deeply relaxed state, you can understand Dr. Schultz if he tells you something or asks you to open your mouth wider. "When the procedure is completed, you immediately wake and you won't remember any of the dentistry," remarks Dr. Schultz. "Pulse, blood pressure and respiration are continually monitored throughout the procedure. The body rapidly metabolizes these types of anesthetic agents, allowing for a quick recovery. Talk and ask about all the choices of sedation dentistry and decide on the one that is most effective and generates minimal anxiety," states Dr. Schultz.

There are ways to help reduce dental anxiety and fear - speak with Dr. Schultz, though it can be hard to speak about illogical fears with a stranger. Dr. Schultz can take added precautions during appointments if fears and anxiety are conveyed. If you enjoy music, bring a portable music player. Music acts as a relaxant as well as drowns out any fear-producing noises. Enjoying your favorite calming music in the course of this appointment will help to lower anxiety.

Agree with Dr. Schultz on a signal as many individuals are frightened the dentist is not going to know they are in substantial discomfort while in the appointment, and will carry on the procedure regardless. The simplest way to fix this issue is to decide on a "stop" hand signal with the dentist. Both sides can easily understand signs like raising the arm or gently tapping on the chair.

Merely getting through the front door for a consultation can be a momentous success for some patients. Dr. Schultz explains, "I understand the importance of that very first step and I'm devoted to offering empathy and beginning a partnership created on trustworthiness."

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Dr. Bart Schultz
Email: Click to Email Dr. Bart Schultz
Web: http://smilesofdistinction.com/
