Dr. Timm Relies on Digital Imaging Technology

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/08/2015 -- Anyone who remembers the old way of having X-rays taken with the uncomfortable cardboard square will appreciate the many types of digital imaging that Dr. Timm has available. The uses of digital X-rays serve a dual purpose. They expose patients and staff to 90% less radiation and they show a much clearer picture than the old X-rays did.

A new type of digital imaging is accomplished with the 3D Cone Beam CT (computed tomography). It is a diagnostic tool that incorporates state-of-the-art panoramic, cephalometric and 3D imaging.

The digital X-ray has a small sensor that is placed in the mouth and connected to a computer. A beam is then sent through the teeth to the sensor that records the images instantly. No more waiting for X-rays to be developed. The images can also be shared with the patient. "Digital X-rays give us the opportunity to detect and diagnose issues before they are visible to the naked eye, and before they can cause you significant damage and pain," comments Dr. Timm.

A cephalometric X-ray is a diagnostic radiograph dental professionals use for numerous dental treatment planning. Dr. Timm states, "Plans include dental implants, the capability to see teeth that are poorly formed, an assessment of the jaws and face, cleft palate evaluation, diagnosis of dental cavities, root canal diagnosis, and analysis of dental trauma."

Panoramic X-ray machines are designed to spin around the head and take a complete picture of bone support, to see whether teeth have not dropped down into place or see if a tooth needs to be removed to make extra room in the mouth. The radiation is equivalent to four smaller films so just because it is a big X-ray machine, there is no need to worry about massive amounts of radiation.

Dr. Timm Recommends Porcelain Crowns for Patients

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2015 -- Individuals suffering from tooth decay, broken fillings, gaps between teeth, and other dental ailments are often not completely aware of how porcelain crowns can help them. Dr. Richard Timm of All Family Dental understands the benefits brought about by this particular type of restoration. Not only are porcelain crowns very durable, they are also designed to look just like natural teeth.

Dental crowns are needed when teeth begin to chip or wear down, usually as a result of factors such as bruxism (teeth grinding), a misaligned bite, fracture, or decay. A tooth that has had a large filling or a root canal may also weaken due to lack of support.

To prevent teeth from eventually fracturing into pieces, it may often be necessary to restore it with a crown electively. Crowns add strength and stability to weakened teeth by covering and shielding the entire surface of the afflicted area. Dr. Timm makes use of porcelain, which he believes to be the best possible cosmetic material for dental crowns. "Porcelain crowns look and feel just like your own teeth. They restore normal functionality and allow you to have a normal bite," he explains.

When receiving a lab-generated crown, patients may generally expect the process to take at least two dental appointments. However, with CEREC technology available in the office, Dr. Timm can produce a crown in just one visit. A thin layer of tooth will be shaved off to allow the bonding to take place so that the crown can be placed perfectly.

"There are three types of crowns: porcelain, gold, and metal—ceramic. Porcelain crowns create, in essence, an appearance completely identical to the patient's original teeth. They capture and reflect light just like natural teeth," says Dr. Timm.

With good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing regularly, porcelain crowns are expected to last between ten to twenty years.

About Dr. Timm
Dr. Timm has a vision and passion for providing extraordinary care and service for his patients. He has completed over 2,000 hours of continuing dental education to best serve the interests and needs of his patients.

Dr. Timm Explains Temporomandibular Dysfunction

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/19/2015 -- The temporomandibular joints are "hinges" connecting the jaw to the skull and are located in front of each ear. They allow rotations as well as sliding and gliding movements in the jaw and are unique as no other bodily joints function the same way.

Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) refers to pain in the jaw and facial muscles. The most common symptoms of TMD include tenderness in the face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, as well as pain in the ear when chewing or opening one's mouth. Dr. Timm adds, "Unfortunately, this syndrome can also bring on painful headaches, migraines, dizziness and earaches. Less painful symptoms include a clicking, popping or grating sound in the jaw that might not be painful, but simply uncomfortable. Some of these symptoms are short-lived while others can last for years."

It is not easy to determine the cause of TMD. Dentists believe it is a result of problems with the jaw muscles or parts of the joints. TMD is usually caused by grinding the teeth, clenching the jaw, or arthritis in the joint itself. "An injury like a substantial blow to the head or even whiplash can easily cause TMD," says Dr. Rick Timm.

One reason for the difficulty in diagnosing TMD is that other conditions, such as tooth decay, sinus infections, arthritis and gum disease, can cause similar symptoms.

To determine the cause of a patient's symptoms, Dr. Timm reviews a detailed history of the joint problem and performs a physical exam. He checks jaw joints for pain or tenderness and listens for clicks, pops, or grating sounds during jaw movement. Dr. Timm also makes sure the jaw functions like it should and does not lock when opening or closing the mouth. On top of that, he tests the patient's bite and checks for problems with facial muscles.

Treatment usually involves no pills, no shots, no surgery, and no unwanted side effects.

Dr. Timm Explains the Dreaded Root Canal Treatment

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/12/2014 -- Endodontics refers to the branch of dentistry dealing with the cause, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp inside the tooth. Treatment usually involves removing the nerve and other pulp cavity tissue, and replacing it with suitable filling material. Most individuals get anxious upon hearing that they have to undergo a root canal treatment. Dr. Rick Timm performs root canal procedures that allow his patients to keep the natural tooth after ridding it of infection.

The tooth pulp consists of blood vessels, nerve tissue and cells that make up the hollow interior of teeth. When the pulp gets infected, a root canal treatment is usually required. The idea that this treatment is excruciatingly painful is no longer true. Advances in endodontics have made it a virtually painless experience, often accomplished in a single visit. In fact, root canal treatment relieves pain instead of causing it.

Dr. Timm explains, "There can be several reasons for an infection in the pulp of the tooth. These include decay or trauma, such as a sharp blow to the tooth or habitual bruxism (grinding of the teeth)." Cracked teeth with large fillings can also be the source of the infection. In addition, infections can be caused by common everyday items, such as acids found in food and beverages, and even certain multi-care toothpastes.

Left untreated, the infection inside the tooth can cause an abscess and the infection may spread. A root canal treatment effectively gets rid of the infection, allowing the tooth to retain its original strength. Dr. Timm asserts, "My mission is to use my knowledge and experience in endodontics to save teeth that would otherwise be lost. Years ago, the typical solution was to extract the tooth that was acting up."

Patients often wonder how long a tooth usually lasts after root canal treatment. In response, Dr. Timm says, "Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, will save your natural tooth and allow you to keep it functional for decades, if not a lifetime."

About Dr. Timm
Dr. Timm graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He then completed a General Practice Dental Residency at Denver General Hospital, Denver, Colorado. While at the Denver General Hospital, he received advanced training in the dental specialties of gum disease treatment (periodontics) and root canal treatment (endodontics).

Dr. Timm Offers Patients Same-Day Crowns with CEREC

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/20/2014 -- In the past, patients would have to visit the dentist's office not once, but twice, to have a crown placed. Now, Dr. Richard Timm of All Family Dental is offering his patients new technology that enables him to place a permanent crown in just one visit to his office.

Dr. Timm provides patients with the latest technology in same-day crowns, fillings and restoring teeth with CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics). It is a system for making porcelain crowns, inlays, onlays and repairing veneers during one visit. The procedure takes approximately two hours from start to finish. Thanks to CAD-CAM, the software that works with this system incorporates a camera, computer and milling machine in just one piece of technology.

Dr. Timm can cost-effectively restore damaged teeth in one visit. To match the natural color of the other teeth, Dr. Timm uses a high-quality ceramic material. To obtain an accurate picture of the damaged tooth, he likes the edge he gets from the special camera. This optical impression is transferred to and displayed on a full spectrum color computer where Dr. Timm puts into motion CAD technology to design the restoration. From there, CAM takes over the procedure and automatically creates the restoration while the patient waits. In the final stage, Dr. Timm bonds the new crown to the surface of the old tooth.

About Dr. Timm
In 2010, Dr Timm was nominated for Fellowship in the American College of Dentists. The American College of Dentists is the oldest national honorary organization of dentists. Its members have exemplified excellence through outstanding leadership and exceptional contributions to dentistry and society.

The same year, Dr Timm, as a member of the Spear Faculty Study Group, began mentoring and teaching dentists at the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry in Scottsdale Arizona. At this institute, Dr. Timm assists the full time faculty to deliver the advanced dental education program.

Dr. Timm Makes Going to the Dentist a Happy Experience for Children

Every parent worries about their child’s first visit to the dentist, and so does Dr. Timm. His mission is to make the visit as fun as possible, and it all starts with the parents.

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/27/2014 -- Dr. Timm states, "I am confident that the visit will give the parents and child the tools needed to achieve great oral health to last a lifetime." Dr. Timm knows that each child is unique and that he needs to provide a positive experience for the child.

It is the goal of All Family Dental that children leave the office with a positive attitude towards dental treatment. Dr. Timm and his staff also ensure the parents will feel comfortable in their role as the main caregiver in the child's oral health. Dr. Timm believes prevention of oral disease is a team effort and it includes the parents' involvement and commitment while in the office and at home.

A child's first dental check-up should take place around their first birthday and Dr. Timm offers suggestions to prepare for that first visit: Explain to the child that Dr. Timm will look inside the mouth and use a tiny mirror to see their teeth better. If all 20 of the baby teeth have come in, prepare the child for the possibility that Dr. Timm or a member of his team may want to clean the teeth with a toothbrush and some toothpaste. Let the child know that Dr. Timm will answer any questions the child may ask. Avoid using words such as needles, shots, drill and other words that are likely to frighten the child. Another way to create positive feelings about dental visits is to remind the child that going to the dentist is a sign of growing up.

Expect there to be bumps along the journey. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), trauma most often happens to baby teeth at two to three years old when motor skills are developing. There will be bumps and tumbles, but establishing a dental home early-on is the first step in preparing for possible tooth trauma. As a father and children's dentist, Dr. Timm knows the stress dental trauma can be for the child and the parents, but accidents do happen as children develop their motor skills.

Americans take dental care for granted, although there are areas of the USA that are in need of dental care, the “developing” countries are years behind us in dental treatment. Dr. Frank Spears said. "I was blessed to have tremendous partners who believed in us and our vision. They recognized what a great opportunity it was to provide essential dental care for people who need it most desperately, and they threw their weight behind it from the beginning." Guatemala is a predominantly poor country that struggles in several areas of health and development, including infant, child, and maternal mortality, malnutrition, literacy, and contraceptive awareness and use.

Dr. Timm was proud and happy to be part of the Open Wide team that went to Antigua, Guatemala to bring health and hope to communities in need. Dr. Timm said, "My goal was simple: To provide quality dental care to people who needed it most desperately."

Dr. Timm, his wife Sue and three other dentists went for five days of work in the clinic in Antigua. Eight to ten people were seen and treated each day by all four dentists. The clinic was already set up and stocked which was especially helpful, since that meant no hauling or shipping all the equipment and supplies to Guatemala. The clinic has been open for three years; the dental assistants and hygienists were in place when they arrived and went to work to help these deserving people with their dental problems. Dr. Timm of All Family Dental in Oakdale, MN remarks, "Most treatments were fillings, root canals and extractions. Dr. Timm has a vision and a passion for providing extraordinary care and service for his patients. He strives to provide the best information available to help patients be well informed of what modern dentistry has to offer. "I was proud to be a part of this mission, to be able to help people with needs such as dental care and I hope to be going once a year from now on," comments Dr. Timm.

Dr. Richard Timm of All Family Dental Endorses Dental Implants

Unlike a bridge, an implant is an independent restoration that does not rely on adjacent teeth for stability.

"If you have a missing tooth or teeth, you are a possible candidate for tooth implants," says Dr. Timm of All Family Dental. "We will take a look at your teeth and gums and also check your bone density. We'll do x-rays and maybe a dental CT scan to be certain you possess sufficient bone structure to place the dental implant." Computer imaging ensures that tooth implants can be positioned in exactly the ideal location in the jawbone.

Though the implant requires surgery, it is far superior to a bridge, because adjacent teeth don't need to be ground down to anchor an implant. How dental implant surgery is performed depends on the type of implant and the condition of your jawbone. But all dental implant surgery occurs in stages and may involve several procedures. The major benefit of implants is solid support for your new teeth, a process that requires the bone to heal tightly around the implant. Because this healing requires time, the process can take many months.

Get the qualified advice of Dr. Timm to determine if you're a candidate for a tooth implant. Similar to other types of oral surgery, dental implant placement requires a certain amount of training and experience that quite a few dentists simply don't have.

A few advantages of dental implants include: an extremely natural look, they won't interfere with teeth next to them, they're permanent and stable, the success rate is high and they are an excellent option for replacing a missing tooth or teeth.

Dr. Richard Timm Explains Sleep Apnea and Offers Treatment

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/23/2013 -- Dr. Timm explains that, "There are two types of sleep apnea - obstructive and central." Snoring and sleep apnea are breathing disorders that occur during sleep due to narrowing or closure of the airway when the muscles relax during sleep. Snoring is caused by partial closure of the airway caused by soft tissue in the back of the throat collapsing. In obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the airway totally closes many times during the night and can reduce oxygen levels in the body and disrupt sleep. This causes the brain to react to the lack of oxygen by alerting the body to arouse from sleep. "This can occur hundreds of times a night resulting in excessive daytime sleepiness, clenching/grinding of the teeth, myofascial pain, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, reflux, depression, heart attack, stroke, and even death," states Dr. Timm.

Central sleep apnea (CSA) is when you repeatedly stop breathing during sleep because the brain temporarily stops sending signals to the muscles that control breathing. Central sleep apnea is not the same as OSA, which is due to a blockage in the airway. A form of CSA commonly occurs in people with congestive heart failure. Other conditions that can cause or lead to central sleep apnea include: Arthritis and degenerative changes in the cervical spine or the base of the skull, complications of cervical spine surgery, a stroke that affects the brainstem, narcotic-containing painkillers and obesity.

Dr. Timm says, "If you have any signs of sleep apnea including loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, sleepiness during the day at work or even while driving, memory or learning problems or feeling irritable all the time, you need to have a sleep study done." In order to confirm a diagnosis of OSA, a sleep study is required using a polysomnogram in a sleep laboratory or home sleep study (ambulatory). A physician should be the one to diagnose the sleep disorder and then Dr. Timm will work closely together with your physician to establish the best treatment for you. Treatment options will vary depending on the level of sleep disorder, and close consultation with your treating physician is required.

Treatment options can include:
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP): Considered the best option for moderate to severe OSA, this provides a steady stream of pressurized air to the patient through a mask that they wear while sleeping.
Oral appliances: An oral appliance fabricated by Dr. Timm is an effective treatment option for mild to moderate OSA and for patients who cannot tolerate sleeping with the CPAP device. These appliances look similar to athletic mouth guards and help maintain an open airway by repositioning or stabilizing the lower jaw.
Surgery: When noninvasive treatments fail, surgery is another alternative. Most surgical options include reducing or removing tissue from the soft palate, uvula, tonsils, adenoids, or tongue.
