One Million Degrees Celebrates 150 Chicagoland Community College Graduates

Innovative local nonprofit doubles its graduating class with a full house at Chase Auditorium

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/24/2016 -- One Million Degrees—a pioneering organization that serves and graduates area community college students - celebrated 150 community college graduates, twice as many graduates as last year, at its annual Scholar Awards ceremony on June 21. The ceremony at Chase Auditorium also recognized the 440 highly-motivated, low-income students served by the program this year, and featured keynote speaker the Honorable Kurt Summers, Treasurer of the City of Chicago.

OMD Scholars attend 11 community colleges across Chicagoland and come from many backgrounds and life experiences. The 2016 Scholar of the Year, Harper College Scholar Christian Huerta, has always been dedicated to following his dreams. When he moved to the United States in his freshman year of high school, he struggled to get the support he needed and was often told he was performing below his classmates. With the academic, personal, professional, and financial supports provided by One Million Degrees while attending Harper College for the past two years, Christian received his associate's degree in May 2016. He will be pursuing his bachelor's degree at Northeastern Illinois University this fall.

"One thing I learned is if people don't make fun of your goals, they're not big enough. Six years ago, I couldn't even order my own lunch because I didn't know English. Today I stand before you with an Associate in Arts and plan on double majoring in Latin American Studies and Political Science." —OMD Alumnus Christian Huerta, Class of 2016

The Scholar Awards ceremony was hosted by JPMorgan Chase and attended by more than 450 scholars, volunteer coaches, supporters, and guests. In addition to Treasurer Summers, attendees heard from OMD Alumnus Tina Watson, now attending Fisk University on a full-tuition scholarship.

$750,000 investment will support Chicago’s Southside Community College students; $750,000 Challenge Grant will fuel organization’s growth to increase graduation rates

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/08/2016 -- One Million Degrees announced today that it has received a three-year $750,000 grant from the Caerus Foundation plus a $750,000 challenge grant to fund OMD expansion of its innovative services to community college students at Kennedy-King and Olive-Harvey Colleges in Chicago. Together, the opportunity for $1.5 million in total investment from Caerus Foundation, whose education funding is dedicated to providing opportunities for under-served communities, is the largest funding commitment received by OMD since its founding 10 years ago. OMD is the only organization in Chicago and one of few nationally to exclusively focus on community college students, providing the essential programs – tutoring, mentoring, professional development, and financial assistance – to increase graduation rates.

"We are enormously grateful for the Caerus Foundation grant, which will provide extraordinary opportunities for the Chicago region's community college students," said Paige Ponder, CEO of One Million Degrees. "The Caerus Foundation's investment validates our model to assist low-income students in graduating from community colleges and in moving along life-changing pathways to jobs, economic mobility, and opportunity for generations to come," added Ponder.

"We are excited to announce this three-year grant along with the $750,000 challenge opportunity, which we hope will encourage companies, foundations, and individuals across Chicagoland to invest in One Million Degrees' successful work with community college students," said Connie Giampapa, Director of the Caerus Foundation. "We know that a college degree is a pathway to success for students, families and their communities. We are proud to help OMD strengthen and grow its work to graduate more community college students and strengthen the regional economy."

The Caerus Foundation investment and challenge grants will help drive OMD's expansion across Chicagoland, growing from more than 400 scholars served this academic year to 700 this fall, with plans to serve 1,000 community college students by 2018 at community colleges in Chicago and the suburbs.

One Million Degrees Launches Volunteer Coach Recruitment, Seeking 500 Professionals to Mentor Community College Students

Coyote Logistics employee passes on legacy of mentoring to two Olive-Harvey College scholars, grows in the process

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2016 -- The One Million Degrees Coach application for the 2016-17 year is now open to professionals from across the Chicago area to make a difference in the lives of One Million Degrees community college Scholars. For a glimpse into the One Million Degrees Coaching experience, meet Jessie Halton, a specialist at Coyote Logistics. Jessie's first interaction with One Million Degrees was through a 2013 Suited For Success event where she met scholars and found how their confidence soared when given the right tools, like receiving their first custom suit—or having a mentor in their corner.

As a volunteer mentor, or coach, Jessie works with two Olive-Harvey College scholars, Sean and Eduardo, to provide the support and guidance needed to navigate school and life. But it isn't just her scholars who are growing in the experience. Jessie says being a coach is a great lesson in self-discipline and accountability.

The driving force that led Jessie signing up as a volunteer was her own experience with mentors in her educational and professional development. Jessie says it was a mentor at her second job who took her under his wing and mentored her with praise, encouragement and advice, giving her the confidence to set high standards and achieve. That confidence also helped her realize how much of an impact she can have in the lives of others.

"When I first considered filling out a One Million Degrees Coach application, a few thoughts had come to mind. Do I have the time? Do I have anything to offer? Can I answer the soul-searching questions that come up in this phase of life?"—One Million Degrees Coach Jessie

Jessie's proudest moment with Sean and Eduardo was the day they called to let her know they were graduating from Olive-Harvey College in May 2016 to further their education and pursue careers in information technology and transportation, distribution, and logistics respectively. After mentoring these promising young scholars once per month over the last year, this was the moment she truly knew the answer to the questions she asked herself—a resounding 'yes.'

Scholar Determined to Rectify Unjust Workplace, Make Women's History After Graduation

Taniya Scott’s educational journey is unlike many—she began school at the age of 10. In celebration of Women’s History Month, One Million Degrees recognizes a resilient woman and OMD Scholar determined to achieve her goals.

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/08/2016 -- "Being behind was a big motivator to go to college," says Taniya Scott whose educational journey was delayed due to a learning disability. Despite this obstacle, she always aspired to become a lawyer and was cheered on by her first grammar school teacher to pursue higher education.

When Taniya started attending Prairie State College in 2010, she was at a point where she wasn't enjoying college and felt she wasn't getting the full value of the experience. "I just wanted to get good grades and get out. One Million Degrees made me reflect on why I'm in college, which is important, because sometimes we forget the 'why's' of what we do." One Million Degree's one-on-one career coaching, academic advising and culture of success provided Taniya the push she needed to keep going.

Taniya will graduate from Prairie State College in May 2016 and become a labor law and human rights attorney. "They have been my biggest supporters. They get so excited and even help me with homework at times."

Taniya will attend Purdue University – Calumet in fall 2016 to pursue a bachelor's degree. Inspired by a passion for advocacy and with the determination to overcome the educational barrier that was holding her back, Taniya chose to pursue a career in law. She wanted to give a voice to people like her who refused to allow a learning disability to stifle professional success. "Before I went to college I had to get a job. I'm a non-traditional student," she says. "I was being taken advantage of by employers because of my lack of education, so I decided to return to school." Her goal was to learn how to rectify many of the unjust practices she had seen and experienced in the workplace.

After graduating from Prairie State College in May 2016 with an associate degree in Psychology, Taniya will attend Purdue University – Calumet in fall 2016 to pursue a bachelor's degree. She plans to attend the University of Chicago Law School for her juris doctor degree.

One Million Degrees and United Airlines Offer Low-Income Community College Students an Alternative Spring Break

In an effort to increase civic engagement, 12 Chicago community college students volunteer and learn about social justice issues in San Francisco

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/10/2015 -- One Million Degrees (OMD)—a Chicago nonprofit organization that empowers low-income, highly motivated community college students to succeed in school, in work and in life—and United Airlines are working together to inspire civic engagement among local community college students through a unique spring break project. United Airlines is providing financial support for an Alternative Spring Break (ASB), in which 12 OMD Scholars and two staff are traveling to San Francisco March 28-April 4. Throughout the week, scholars will volunteer with a variety of nonprofits and learn about the social and environmental issues those organizations are addressing across the Bay area.

"We are grateful for United Airlines' investment in One Million Degrees and our scholars by sponsoring this year's Alternative Spring Break trip," said Paige Ponder, CEO of One Million Degrees. "This experience will not only build a tremendous sense of community among our scholars, but will also give them a hands-on understanding of critical social and environmental issues. OMD Scholars will be leaders in their careers and communities, and experiences like ASB will make them more effective change agents. United is helping us inform, prepare and inspire them."

OMD Scholars will learn about the issues being addressed by San Francisco-area community organizations and assist with a variety of projects at homeless shelters, food banks, local parks and community urban farms. OMD is working with Community Collaborations International (CCI) to coordinate the volunteer projects. CCI organizes teams of volunteers from universities and colleges all over the country and puts them to work where they are needed most.

"United Airlines proudly supports organizations in our communities that provide opportunities for youth, and work to improve lives through health and education," said United's Managing Director of Diversity and Inclusion Greg Jones. "Spring break is always a busy time for us, and we're happy for the opportunity to help these scholars create a memorable and educational experience like this."

Traditionally, community college students face numerous challenges that the typical four-year college student does not, such as caring for children and working two or more jobs. OMD strives to help address those challenges by providing a variety of holistic supports—financial assistance, mentoring, coaching, academic interventions and professional development—to hundreds of community college students across 11 Chicago-area community colleges each year. OMD is one of the only organizations in the country working directly with low-income community college students, and the model has achieved compelling results: OMD Scholars graduate from college at over three times the national average. Upon completion, scholars transfer to four-year colleges and universities to earn their bachelor's degrees and enter the workforce in high-demand fields, such as health care, IT and engineering. OMD Scholars build better futures for themselves, their families and their communities, while helping to strengthen the economy.

OMD is one of the only organizations offering community college students Alternative Spring Break opportunities, which have been shown to raise awareness among students about the importance of civic engagement. These trips have become popular at traditional four-year colleges and universities, but are extremely rare among community college students due in part to the many personal challenges and responsibilities students juggle outside of the classroom. But there is a real need for community college students to become engaged in social issues.

Research conducted by America's Democracy Colleges found that community college students are traditionally less likely to be civically engaged than four-year college students, but suggests that community colleges have potential to become hubs of civic engagement. In fact, the Rappaport Family Foundation has found that because community college students have needs and concerns very different than those of typical college students, coupled with the fact that they go to school where they live and often stay in those communities after graduation, they are primed for civic engagement. Specifically, they are likely to become involved in community-based activism, taking on the issues affecting their families, peers and neighborhoods. OMD aims to encourage civic engagement through this trip as well as through its monthly scholar development workshops and service opportunities offered throughout the year.

Last year, OMD offered its first Alternative Spring Break trip for Scholars, in which 12 students traveled to Cleveland and spent the week working with food banks and early childhood and senior centers.

"The first Alternative Spring Break trip with OMD was a meaningful experience. The trip gave me an opportunity to help and learn from others. I'm grateful for the opportunity to go on another ASB trip this year and have been looking forward to it," said Edgar Mejia, a 20-year-old Albany Park resident who is pursuing an associate degree in mechanical engineering at Harry Truman College.

Hyde Park resident Stephanie Kuwornu (20) is pursuing an associate degree in economics and will graduate from Harold Washington College in June. She is looking forward to the Alternative Spring Break program and the opportunity to give back to others. "Instead of spending my spring break just hanging out and going to the movies with my friends, I will be spending time exploring a different place and contributing to important social issues through community service."

Chicago Department of Aviation and One Million Degrees Launch Partnership in Support of Community College Students

Innovative Airports Going Green Partnership Will Support Low-Income Community College Students

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/04/2014 -- One Million Degrees (OMD) is pleased to announce the launch of a partnership with the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) and the Airports Going Green Steering Committee to support a cohort of low-income community college students pursuing degrees at City Colleges of Chicago in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields and Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics (TDL).

This partnership will be formally announced at the CDA's seventh annual Airports Going Green Conference, the leading aviation industry forum on sustainability. The conference will take place from November 3-5, 2014 in downtown Chicago. This annual conference has served as a valuable tool for the CDA to educate industry experts, airport and airline professionals, contractors, consultants, environmentalists, and the media on its industry-leading sustainability efforts.

One Million Degrees, the CDA, and the Airports Going Green Steering Committee are teaming up to provide these students with comprehensive support services to help them excel in the classroom and beyond; scholarships to cover tuition and defray educational expenses, and professional coaching and mentoring from volunteers.

Going forward, the CDA and the conference Steering Committee will host an annual career exploration day so that OMD Scholars who are interested in STEM, TDL, and sustainability, energy, and aviation (SEA) can learn about careers in these high-growth industries. The Airports Going Green Conference support of OMD Scholars is made possible through generous donations from corporate sponsors that value student development and the growth of sustainability in the aviation industry.

"This partnership is an exciting example of how the City of Chicago and companies with an interest in Chicago can partner with community-based organizations to enrich the local talent pool and strengthen the competitiveness and capacity of our labor market," said Paige Ponder, CEO of One Million Degrees. "This is a fantastic opportunity for our scholars, many of whom hope to establish careers in STEM, TDL, and SEA, to benefit from the guidance, insights, and support of the Airports Going Green Steering Committee.

"The Chicago Department of Aviation is pleased to partner with One Million Degrees to support Mayor Rahm Emanuel's goal of helping Chicago students get the education and experience they need to succeed in some of the fastest growing sectors, including sustainability," said Rosemarie S. Andolino, Commissioner, CDA. "The CDA has joined with many other U.S. and international airports to lead an 'Airports Going Green' movement that is advancing and promoting sustainability for the aviation industry. This effort is spurring new innovation and initiatives from airports, airlines and aviation stakeholders and creating future opportunities for students who pursue studies in sustainability."

Forty-one Low-Income Harper College Students to Receive up to Three Years of Academic, Professional, Personal, and Financial Support from One Million Degrees

Palatine, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/05/2014 -- One Million Degrees (OMD) is thrilled to welcome the first ever class of OMD Harper Scholars. Forty-one low-income, highly motivated Harper College students have been selected to become One Million Degrees Scholars. OMD empowers community college students to excel academically, and ensures that they are well prepared to enter the workforce in diverse and meaningful careers.

"We are excited to be working hand-in-hand with Harper College to ensure their students excel in the classroom and beyond," said OMD CEO, Paige Ponder. "This partnership is a great example of how community colleges and community-based organizations can effectively partner to support more low-income students as they earn degrees and move into the middle class."

One Million Degrees is providing the forty-one Harper College Scholars with comprehensive student support services, including a dedicated staff person, a personal coach, monthly professional development workshops, financial literacy training, career exploration activities, leadership development, and financial assistance. Harper College is providing staff support, weekly individual tutoring, space and materials for OMD programming, and help with recruiting volunteers and partners to support the program.

When Hoffman Estates resident Homira Wardak was in high school, she volunteered at a hospital and fell in love with the field of health science. This passion led her to pursue a degree in science at Harper College. She is now thrilled to have the support of the One Million Degrees program as she works towards her degree. "I believe the program will help me be more involved in my community, find more confidence in myself, and more importantly, help me achieve my goals."

OMD Scholars are graduating from community colleges at a rate of 70 percent – three times the state average – and transferring to four-year colleges and universities or entering the workforce in high-demand fields.
Featured Culinary Team:
Ryan McCaskey/Executive Chef and Owner of Acadia
Chef Ryan McCaskey has a diverse skill set and broad experience, and cites some of the greats – Trotter, Tramonto, Portale, Achatz and Keller – as influencers, as well as Henry Adaniya, owner of Trio and a consummate host. Seeing a guest have a great experience and providing them a culinary memory is what drives McCaskey to strive to provide the best he possibly can. McCaskey describes his style as "Simultaneously contemporary and classic. The first half of my career was rooted in classical cuisine, technique-driven, the fundamentals. Recently, my focus shifted to subtlety, layering flavors and using contemporary techniques. But one doesn't overshadow the other – they work in harmony, balancing out one another." In November 2012, Acadia was awarded its first Michelin star, after being open less than a year, an incredible honor for the chef and his team. McCaskey lives in the South Loop neighborhood, just up the street from Acadia.

Kevin Hickey/Chef at Bottlefork
After 18 years with the Four Seasons hotel and resorts, Chef Kevin Hickey has joined the Rockit Ranch Productions team as the new Chef/Partner of Bottlefork. Bottlefork is a new American concept that offers locally sourced and globally inspired cuisine and cocktails and displays Chef Hickey's penchant for big, bold flavors showcased in modern interpretations of both familiar and new American dishes. Continuing Chef Hickey's farm-to-table philosophy, Bottlefork will feature key collaborations with local Midwestern brewers, farmers, winemakers and more. Previous to Rockit Ranch Productions, Chef Hickey worked for the Four Seasons hotels and resorts in California, Dublin and London before coming back to his native Chicago in 2004, where he led his team to a Michelin Star and AAA Five Diamond status.

Carrie Nahabedian/Chef and Founder of NAHA and Brindille
After departing from her position as Executive Chef of the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, Carrie Nahabedian returned to her native Chicago to open NAHA in 2000, which garnered her a James Beard Award and four consecutive Michelin stars. Carrie opened Brindille in the spring of 2013 along with partner and cousin Michael; while NAHA serves to highlight her Armenian roots, Brindille's refined Parisian fare celebrates hers and Michael's favorite spots in Paris.

Sandra Holl/Pastry Chef and Founder of Floriole Cafe & Bakery
Floriole Cafe & Bakery began as a stand at Chicago's Green City Market, where for nearly 5 years, founders Sandra and Mathieu Holl sold rustic, French pastries in a 10-by-10 tent. In 2010, their dream of owning a cafe and bakery came true when they opened Floriole Cafe & Bakery in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In addition to pastries, the menu also includes breads, sandwiches, and salads made from the best ingredients sourced directly from sustainable farms in the region. Pastry Chef Sandra Holl trained at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and worked as a baker at the renowned Tartine Bakery. She has contributed to Bon Appetit Magazine and was nominated for Best Chef by TimeOut Chicago. Floriole Cafe & Bakery was also named "Outstanding Bakery" 2011 by the Chicago Tribune.

Emily Wheeler/Pastry Chef Founder of Emily Wheeler Custom Cakes
Pastry Chef Emily Wheeler brings her expertise in sweet cuisine to the forefront with Emily Wheeler Custom Cakes. Emily uses her education from the L'art du Gateau program at The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King College to create unique cakes and cupcakes. Emily strives to make each order a unique experience for every client. From weddings to birthdays, baptisms to bachelorette parties, Chef Emily Wheeler can do it all.

Jason Prah/Sommelier of Acadia
Sommelier and Wine Director Jason Prah has worked in the Chicago restaurant scene for more than a decade, having started as Assistant Wine Director at The Italian Village, a Wine Spectator "Grand Award" recipient. Over the years, he has held the title of Wine Director as well as General Manager at several acclaimed restaurants, including La Vita, Tizi Melloul and Allen's. Prior to joining the Acadia team, Prah was Wine Director at Eno Wine Room at the Intercontinental Hotel, where he also consulted for their sister property at the Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel. His style takes the pretense out of the wine experience, making it both accessible and fun, while at the same time educating his customers. He believes that wine – from making it to enjoying it – resonates on cultural, historical and personal levels, making it an important element to our existence.

Chicago's Corporate and Civic Leaders to Help Low-Income Community College Students Gain a Competitive Edge

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/17/2014 -- One Million Degrees (OMD) is thrilled to announce its annual "It's Who You Know" Speed Networking and Mocktail Reception, hosted by JPMorgan Chase—where industry leaders in healthcare, financial services, education, government, and philanthropy will help OMD Scholars sharpen their networking skills and build personal and professional networks. Volunteers will participate in a high-energy night of speed networking and mingling over "mocktails" with OMD Scholars.

JPMorgan Chase is committed to cultivating talent in the Chicago community and has partnered with OMD for the last five years to support low-income, highly motivated community college students through financial assistance and extensive academic, personal, and work-readiness supports, including long-term coaching. "It's Who You Know" Speed Networking and Mocktail Reception is one of the signature JPMorgan Chase/OMD events designed to give students access to exclusive professional networking opportunities. The event is a way to give inexperienced students much needed practice for the real thing – interviewing in the job market.

"Often times you get one shot to make a lasting impression, to get that unbeatable job or promotion, so the ability to think quickly and to explain your value in two minutes or less is key. Practice makes perfect," said Paige Ponder, Chief Executive Officer of OMD. "Many of our scholars have never had the opportunity to meet business executives, let alone talk to them about what they think they can do. It's a huge confidence booster for the students and this is a real networking opportunity. The room is filled with movers and shakers who may be able to provide unique career opportunities to our scholars."

Last year, volunteers represented a wide array of companies and organizations, including JPMorgan Chase, Wrigley Gum, the City of Chicago, Chicago Tribune, Mesirow Financial, and many more.

"It's Who You Know" Speed Networking and Mocktail Reception will be hosted at JPMorgan Chase, 10 S Dearborn, 57th floor, from 6:00pm-8:00pm on March 20th, 2014.
