$750,000 investment will support Chicago’s Southside Community College students; $750,000 Challenge Grant will fuel organization’s growth to increase graduation rates

Together, the opportunity for $1.5 million in total investment from Caerus Foundation, whose education funding is dedicated to providing opportunities for under-served communities, is the largest funding commitment received by OMD since its founding 10 years ago. OMD is the only organization in Chicago and one of few nationally to exclusively focus on community college students, providing the essential programs – tutoring, mentoring, professional development, and financial assistance – to increase graduation rates.

For a glimpse into the One Million Degrees Coaching experience, meet Jessie Halton, a specialist at Coyote Logistics. Jessie's first interaction with One Million Degrees was through a 2013 Suited For Success event where she met scholars and found how their confidence soared when given the right tools, like receiving their first custom suit—or having a mentor in their corner.

As a volunteer mentor, or coach, Jessie works with two Olive-Harvey College scholars, Sean and Eduardo, to provide the support and guidance needed to navigate school and life. But it isn't just her scholars who are growing in the experience. Jessie says being a coach is a great lesson in self-discipline and accountability.

The driving force that led Jessie signing up as a volunteer was her own experience with mentors in her educational and professional development. Jessie says it was a mentor at her second job who took her under his wing and mentored her with praise, encouragement and advice, giving her the confidence to set high standards and achieve. Taniya Scott’s educational journey is unlike many—she began school at the age of 10. In celebration of Women’s History Month, One Million Degrees recognizes a resilient woman and OMD Scholar determined to achieve her goals.

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/08/2016 -- "Being behind was a big motivator to go to college," says Taniya Scott whose educational journey was delayed due to a learning disability. Despite this obstacle, she always aspired to become a lawyer and was cheered on by her first grammar school teacher to pursue higher education.

When Taniya started attending Prairie State College in 2010, she was at a point where she wasn't enjoying college and felt she wasn't getting the full value of the experience. "I just wanted to get good grades and get out. One Million Degrees made me reflect on why I'm in college, which is important, because sometimes we forget the 'why's' of what we do." One Million Degree's one-on-one career coaching, academic advising and culture of success provided Taniya the push she needed to keep going.

Taniya will graduate from Prairie State College in May 2016 and become a labor law and human rights attorney. "They have been my biggest supporters. They get so excited and even help me with homework at times."

Taniya will attend Purdue University – Calumet in fall 2016 to pursue a bachelor's degree. Inspired by a passion for advocacy and with the determination to overcome the educational barrier that was holding her back, Taniya chose to pursue a career in law. She wanted to give a voice to people like her who refused to allow a learning disability to stifle professional success. "Before I went to college I had to get a job. I'm a non-traditional student," she says. "I was being taken advantage of by employers because of my lack of education, so I decided to return to school." Her goal was to learn how to rectify many of the unjust practices she had seen and experienced in the workplace.

After graduating from Prairie State College in May 2016 with an associate degree in Psychology, Taniya will attend Purdue University – Calumet in fall 2016 to pursue a bachelor's degree. She plans to attend the University of Chicago Law School for her juris doctor degree.

Summer Ramp-Up Program will jumpstart success for more than 150 low-income students at Kennedy-King College

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/22/2015 -- One Million Degrees (OMD)—a Chicago nonprofit organization that empowers low-income, highly motivated students at 11 Chicago-area community colleges to succeed in school, in work, and in life—announced a new partnership with Allstate to support the pilot of OMD's first-ever summer acceleration program.

The Summer Ramp-Up Program, which begins June 27, will be available to all OMD Scholars enrolled full-time at Kennedy-King College for the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year. The program will serve more than 150 students and is designed to increase the likelihood of student success by helping participants build the academic momentum necessary for them to hit the ground running in the upcoming school year. The program will meet three hours a week for six weeks, during which time participating OMD Scholars will attend weekly one-on-one tutoring sessions and skill-building workshops on topics such as goal setting and study skills.

In an effort to increase civic engagement, 12 Chicago community college students volunteer and learn about social justice issues in San Francisco

United Airlines is providing financial support for an Alternative Spring Break (ASB), in which 12 OMD Scholars and two staff are traveling to San Francisco March 28-April 4. Throughout the week, scholars will volunteer with a variety of nonprofits and learn about the social and environmental issues those organizations are addressing across the Bay area.

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/12/2015 -- One Million Degrees (OMD) is now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 OMD Signature Scholarship Program. All students planning to attend the City Colleges of Chicago, College of Lake County, Harper College, Prairie State College, or South Suburban College for the 2015-2016 academic year should apply now!

Students selected as OMD Scholars will benefit from comprehensive supports, including:

- Financial assistance to defray costs associated with attending college
- Monthly workshops focused on professional development, financial literacy, and civic engagement
- Academic, professional, and personal guidance from OMD staff and a coach
- Free, private tutoring sessions held on campus
- A supportive community of scholars and advisors

Any student who plans to enroll full-time for the entire 2015-2016 academic year at any of the City Colleges of Chicago, College of Lake County, Harper College, Prairie State College, or South Suburban College should apply. Applicants must be Pell-Eligible. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Forty-one Low-Income Harper College Students to Receive up to Three Years of Academic, Professional, Personal, and Financial Support from One Million Degrees

Forty-one low-income, highly motivated Harper College students have been selected to become One Million Degrees Scholars. Program Helps Prepare Low-Income Community College Students for Success in High-Growth Industry

Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/07/2013 -- One Million Degrees (OMD) is pleased to announce the launch of a partnership with Olive-Harvey College to support low-income community college students in the Supply Chain Management (SCM) training program, one of the fastest growing industries in the Chicago area. During this pilot year, OMD will provide comprehensive student support services and financial assistance to eight students enrolled in the Basic Certificate program in SCM, which is designed for individuals interested in employment in the warehousing and distribution industry.

Low-Income Community College Students to Receive Financial and Career Readiness Support from Global Financial Services Provider
