Teton Village, WY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/03/2019 -- A landmark 9th U.S. Circuit Court panel has upheld the City of Berkeley's cell phone right to know ordinance. That ordinance requires retailers to inform consumers that cell phones emit radiation that can exceed federal cell phone radiation limits when close to the body. In upholding this decision, the panel concluded that the public health issues at hand were "substantial" and that the "text of the Berkeley notice was literally true," and "uncontroversial."

Further, the panel determined that the Berkeley ordinance did not constitute preemption.

"Far from conflicting with federal law and policy, the Berkeley ordinance complemented and enforced it."

The panel held that Berkeley's required disclosure simply alerted consumers to the safety disclosures that the Federal Communications Commission required, and directed consumers to federally compelled instructions in their user manuals providing specific information about how to avoid excessive exposure.

Industry is expected to appeal for a full court en banc review, but this reviewing "panel concluded that CTIA had little likelihood of success based on conflict preemption."

The final peer reviewed NIH reports confirm evidence of an association between cell phone radiation and both heart and brain cancers in large-scale animal study.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/01/2018 -- U.S. National Institutes of Health National Toxicology Program (NTP) concludes that there is "clear evidence" that male rats developed cancerous heart tumors from exposure to cell phone radio frequency radiation according to final reports released today. In addition, they conclude the increased tumors in the brain and adrenal gland of exposed male rats were "some evidence" of cancer from the cell phone radiation exposure. According to NIH, the final reports on rats and mice represent "the consensus of NTP" and a panel of external scientific experts who reviewed the study data in March and voted to strengthen the conclusion that cell phone radiation caused health effects. Scientists are now calling for federal action - a quantitative risk assessment and protective policies to reduce wireless exposure.

The FDA prioritize and perform a quantitative risk assessment to determine the levels of risk to humans.

The private sector launch a research and development program that will ensure consumers have safe technology choices available in the marketplace—meaning devices that have wired connection capability with the ability to quick-disconnect all wireless/bluetooth functions.

The EPA along with relevant health agencies launch a full systematic and independent review of all scientific evidence.

The CDC, NCI and FDA issue clear comprehensive public health recommendations to the public about how to reduce personal firsthand and secondhand exposures to radiation emitted by cell phones, tablets and all wireless devices, accessories and appliances via well-funded ongoing public awareness campaigns.

Policy that will eliminate and reduce exposure from cell towers, indoor and outdoor base stations and Wi-Fi in neighborhoods, community centers, healthcare facilities, places of worship and schools.

Informational labeling on all cell phones and wireless devices that are capable of emitting radio frequency radiation.

An immediate full halt to 5G and small cell deployment.

In 1999, the FDA nominated cell phone radiation to the NTP for large-scale animal studies, stating, "the existing exposure guidelines are based on protection from acute injury from thermal effects of RFR exposure, and may not be protective against any non-thermal effects of chronic exposures."

On November 1, 2018 the National Toxicology Program (NTP) released their final reports on rats and mice exposed to long term radiofrequency radiation.

The final reports concurred with the March peer review panel that the malignant schwannoma tumors found in the heart of male rats be scientifically categorized as "clear evidence of carcinogenicity" and that the malignant gliomas found in the brain of male rats be categorized as "some evidence of carcinogenicity." Used a corded phone whenever possible to minimize cell phone use.

Keep the cell phone away from your head and body.

When talking on the cell phone, use speakerphone or wired airtube headset to reduce exposure to your brain.

Avoid carrying your phone against the body like in a pocket, sock, bra or spandex pants.

Laptops and tablets should always be placed on a table, not on your lap.

Be aware of how close children are to you when you are using a cell phone or wireless device and minimize their exposure. For example do not rest a cell phone on your baby or hold a transmitting device near their bodies.

Choose wired Internet (ethernet cable modems) at home/office instead of wireless systems. Use ethernet wired (not wireless) computers to do as much of your internet connection and social media and streaming videos.

Choose non-wireless options instead of wireless for tech and accessories such as computers, laptops, printers, gaming consoles and handsets, security, mouse, keyboard, video cameras, HVAC, speakers, headphones, microphones and other accessories.

Avoid sleeping next to your cell phone or wireless device. Cell phones should be powered off at night. If you use your cell phone as an alarm clock, turn the phone to airplane mode.

Do not charge cell phones or electronics near your bed at night.

Turn your phone off or on airplane mode with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth OFF more. Even in standby mode, your phone emits RF energy because it is constantly searching for service or new messages. If you do not need your cell phone, simply turn it off. This also applies to all other wireless devices whereby the Wi-Fi antennas can be powered off. Wifi laptops tablets and other devices such as gaming devices are always transmitting even if you are not using them so remember to power them off.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/06/2018 -- A review paper to be published in Environmental Research today concludes that the current scientific evidence supports the conclusion that mobile phone and wireless radiofrequency radiation (RFR) is cancer-causing. This paper is a review and summary of animal experimental evidence and human epidemiology studies (case-control, cohort, time trend and case studies) published after the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) categorized radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emissions from mobile phones and other wireless devices as a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B) in 2011. The authors conclude that the current scientific evidence strengthens and supports an upgraded classification that RFR should now be categorized as carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 1).

"With the epidemiological studies of humans over many years and the recent findings of the US National Toxicology Program and Ramazzini Institute animal studies, we now have enough evidence to classify Radiofrequency Radiation as carcinogenic to humans. Examples of the scientific evidence included in the paper:

Thirteen studies published since 2011 associate mobile phone use with increased tumors. Specifically nine studies report increased risk of brain cancer from mobile phone use, and four case-control studies report increased risk of vestibular nerve tumors from mobile phone use.

The US National Toxicology Program Carcinogenesis Studies of Cell Phone Radiofrequency Radiation rats which found increases in glioma and schwannoma of the heart of male rats.

The Ramazzini Institute's "Report of final results regarding brain and heart tumors in Sprague-Dawley rats exposed from prenatal life until natural death to mobile phone radiofrequency field representative of a 1.8?GHz GSM base station environmental emission."

Gliomas and acoustic neuromas are the specific focus of the paper as similar tumors are found in both human and animal studies of mobile phone radiofrequency radiation. Case-control studies were considered to be superior to the cohort studies or other methods in evaluating potential risks for brain cancer as case control studies allow more detailed consideration with a focus on highly exposed persons. Studies that only consider cancer rate increases in the general population will not necessarily pick up an increase in tumors as cancer from an environmental exposure can take four decades to be evident in the general population and widespread exposure to mobile phone RFR has been only about two decades.

The authors conclude that "current evidence is strong enough to go from precaution concerning possible risk to prevention of known risks" with a "concerted program of public and health professional education" to promote safer technology "while every attempt should be made to reduce exposure to RFR in schools, as well as homes."

Microwaves Linked to Brain Damage in US Diplomats Also Cause Brain Damage and Cancer in Large Laboratory Study

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/06/2018 -- In a new article to be published today in Environmental Research, Ronald L Melnick, PhD, the senior US toxicologist who led the design of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) study on cell phone radiation, explains that the NTP found "clear evidence" of increased cancers (gliomas in the brain and Schwannomas in the heart) in animals and why this is directly relevant to evaluating human risks from cell phone radiation. In addition, Melnick explains how widely circulated criticisms of the NTP study are mistaken and "unfounded."

Melnick notes the striking parallels between human studies of regular cell phone users and the NTP experiment with rodents. Both the human and rodent studies found elevated rates of the same tumor types. The new paper is titled, "Commentary on the Utility of the National Toxicology Program Study on Cell Phone Radiofrequency Radiation Data for Assessing Human Health Risks Despite Unfounded Criticisms Aimed at Minimizing the Findings of Adverse Health Effects."

He notes that the Ramazzini Institute large-scale rodent study found increased Schwannomas in the heart at much lower radiation levels than the NTP study. Further, Melnick indicates that other studies, such as Lerchl et al., 2015, found radiofrequency radiation at significantly lower doses than the NTP study promoted cancer development, with evidence for a heightened synergistic impact when combined with a known carcinogen.

Melnick presented scientific data debunking eight widely circulated criticisms of the NTP study. Those rejected criticisms included the notion that rat studies are not relevant to humans, that tumors occurred only in male rats, that the exposures in the study were extraordinarily high, and that the study had a higher chance of producing a falsely positive result. Regarding the allegation that NTP radiation exposure levels "were much higher than human exposure limits (19 to 75 times)," Melnick explained that the NTP exposures were actually "similar to or only slightly higher" than limits in US regulations on radiofrequency radiation exposures to human brain tissue when a cell phone is held next to the head, and they were below regulatory limits for occupational exposures.

Melnick also detailed that since 1996 the US Federal Communications Commission cell phone regulations have been based on the "now proven wrong" assumption that low level "non thermal" radiofrequency radiation (RFR) could not cause harmful effects.

"This assumption of safety from non-thermal RFR levels is frankly wrong. The non-thermal effects of cell phone RFR include tumor development, heart damage, DNA damage to brain, tumor promotion and oxidative stress." Oxidative DNA damage is shown to be an effect of RFR in numerous research studies and can lead to genomic changes in animals and humans that can result in cancer development. Many human carcinogens, including asbestos and arsenic, are now understood to induce oxidative stress even though they do not directly cause DNA damage. "Thus, without causing direct DNA damage, RFR may induce oxidative stress and thereby initiate or promote tumor development," Melnick explained.

Scientific panel advises there is evidence for an association between both heart and brain cancers and cell phone radiation in large-scale animal study

The U.S. government invited an expert panel to make a majority-rules declaration in response to the $25 million U.S. government National Toxicology Program (NTP) study of cell phone radiation in animals. Scientists call on the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer to re-evaluate the carcinogenicity of cell phone radiation after the Ramazzini Institute and US government studies report finding the same unusual cancers

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/23/2018 -- Researchers with the renowned Ramazzini Institute (RI) in Italy announce that a large-scale lifetime study of lab animals exposed to environmental levels of cell tower radiation developed cancer. A $25 million study of much higher levels of cell phone radiofrequency (RF) radiation, from the US National Toxicology Program (NTP), has also reported finding the same unusual cancer called Schwannoma of the heart in male rats treated at the highest dose. In addition, the RI study of cell tower radiation also found increases in malignant brain (glial) tumors in female rats and precancerous conditions including Schwann cells hyperplasia in both male and female rats.

"Our findings of cancerous tumors in rats exposed to environmental levels of RF are consistent with and reinforce the results of the US NTP studies on cell phone radiation, as both reported increases in the same types of tumors of the brain and heart in Sprague-Dawley rats. Together, these studies provide sufficient evidence to call for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to re-evaluate and re-classify their conclusions regarding the carcinogenic potential of RFR in humans," said Fiorella Belpoggi PhD, study author and RI Director of Research.

The Ramazzini study exposed 2448 Sprague-Dawley rats from prenatal life until their natural death to "environmental" cell tower radiation for 19 hours per day (1.8 GHz GSM radiofrequency radiation (RFR) of 5, 25 and 50 V/m). RI exposures mimicked base station emissions like those from cell tower antennas, and exposure levels were far less than those used in the NTP studies of cell phone radiation.

"All of the exposures used in the Ramazzini study were below the US FCC limits. These are permissible exposures according the FCC. In other words, a person can legally be exposed to this level of radiation. Yet cancers occurred in these animals at these legally permitted levels. The Ramazzini findings are consistent with the NTP study demonstrating these effects are a reproducible finding," explained Ronald Melnick PhD, formerly the Senior NIH toxicologist who led the design of the NTP study on cell phone radiation now a Senior Science Advisor to Environmental Health Trust (EHT). "Governments need to strengthen regulations to protect the public from these harmful non-thermal exposures."

"This is particularly urgent because of current plans to place small 5G cell towers about every 300 meters in every street across the country. These 5G 'small cell' antennas will result in continuous exposure to everyone living nearby and everyone walking down the street. The increased exposures will increase risk of cancer and other diseases such as electro-hypersensitivity."

Ramazzini Institute investigators have completed nearly 500 cancer bioassays on more than 200 compounds, and their study design is unique in that animals are allowed to live until their natural deaths in order to allow detection of late-developing tumors. Eighty percent of all human cancers are late-developing, occurring in humans after 60 years of age. This longer observation period has allowed the RI to detect such later-occurring tumors for a number of chemicals, and their published research includes studies of benzene, xylenes, mancozeb, formaldehyde and vinyl chloride.

The Ramazzini research results come in the wake of similar findings from the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) large-scale experimental studies on cell phone radiation. Both studies found statistically significant increases in the development of the same type of very rare and highly malignant tumor in the heart of male rats—schwannomas.

Sasco MD, DrPH, SM, MPH, retired Director of Research at the INSERM (French NIH) and former Unit Chief at the International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization, France, who commented that, "some of the results are not statistically significant due to the relatively small number of animals involved. Yet, that does not mean they should be ignored. Larger studies could turn out statistically significant results and in any event statistical significance is just one aspect of evaluation of the relation between exposure and disease. Biological significance and concordance of results between humans and animals clearly reinforces the strength of the evidence of carcinogenicity. The facts that both experimental studies found the same types of rare tumors, which also have pertinence to the human clinical picture, is striking."

"Such findings of effects at very low levels are not unexpected," stated Devra Davis PhD, MPH, president of EHT, pointing to a Jacobs University replication animal study published in 2015 that also found very low levels of RFR promoted tumor growth. "This study confirms an ever growing literature and provides a wake-up call to governments to enact protective policy to limit exposures to the public and to the private sector to make safe radiation-free technology available."

In January 2017 at an international conference co-sponsored by Environmental Health Trust and the Israel Institute for Advanced Study at Hebrew University, Fiorella Belpoggi PhD, Director of Research at the Ramazzini Institute, presented the study design and the findings that RFR-exposed animals had significantly lower litter weights. Belpoggi's presentation and slides are available online. The Ramazzini findings of lower litter weights are consistent with the NTP study, which also found lower litter weights in prenatally exposed animals. At that time, the Italian journal Corriere published an article about the presentation of the Ramazzini study and quoted Belpoggi's recommendation of "maximum precaution for children and pregnant women."

Noting that "current standards were not set to protect children, pregnant women, and the growing numbers of infants and toddlers for whom devices have become playthings," Davis, who is also Visiting Professor of Medicine of Hebrew University Medical Center and Guest Editor in Chief of the journal Environmental Research, added, "Current two-decade old FCC limits were set when the average call was six minutes and costly cell phones were used by very few. These important, new, game-changing studies show that animals develop the same types of unusual cancers that are being seen in those few human epidemiological studies that have been done. In light of these results, Environmental Health Trust joins with public health experts from the states of California, Connecticut and Maryland, as well as those in France, Israel and Belgium to call on government and the private sector to carry out major ongoing public health educational campaigns to promote safer phone and personal device technology, to require and expedite fundamental changes in hardware and software to reduce exposures to RFR/microwave radiation throughout indoor and outdoor environments, and to institute major monitoring, training and research programs to identify solutions, future problems and prevention of related hazards and risks."

Statement by Devra Davis PhD, MPH

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) found carcinogenic activity confirming adverse biological effects from radiofrequency non-ionizing radiation. These results from the largest study ever done in animals on cell phone radiation at levels that approximate those that humans experience are important and troubling. They show increases in the same types of cancers in animals parallel to tumors that we find in humans who have been regular cell phone users for a decade or more.

We test animals in order to predict effects on humans and to prevent adverse effects. That is how drugs are developed. Every compound known to cause cancer in humans also produces it in animals when adequately tested, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization.

This $25 million study was carefully designed to test the long-held assumption that non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation could not cause health effects at low "non-thermal" levels, as thermal levels are well-known to cause harm. Yet increased cancers at many tumor sites as well as cardiac disease occurred in exposed animals at non-thermal exposure levels that the federal government has long assumed to be safe.

In light of these findings and other studies showing damage to male and female reproductive health we recommend:

The FDA perform a quantitative risk assessment to determine the levels of risk associated with this widespread exposure.

The private sector should launch a research and development program so that wireless devices emit the lowest amount of radiation as possible. Equally important, industry needs to ensure consumers have safe technology choices available in the marketplace—meaning devices that have wired capability with the ability to turn off all wireless/bluetooth functions.

The EPA along with relevant health agencies should launch a full systematic and independent review of all scientific evidence.

Protective actions are immediately needed to reduce exposure to the public via policy actions and an ongoing public awareness campaign.

The National Toxicology Program results indicate increased rates of a number of forms of cancer and heart and thyroid disease in animals when exposed for most of their lifetimes to the same types of radiation that people get today from their cell phones and other wireless transmitting devices that are held close to the body.

Recent test data from the French national radiation testing agency revealed that when phones are tested directly next to the body they can expose people to up to 9 times more radiation than current US test guidelines allow. That is because under the 20-year-old cell phone test system that we currently are using in the United States, phones are tested with a distance between the phone and the body, rather than in direct contact with the body.

Phones are not tested in these positions:

Resting the phone on your chest as you lay in bed listening to streaming music.

Carrying the phone in your bra, pants, or shirt pocket.

Playing with a phone resting against the body as many toddlers are doing when handed phones.

Watching a streaming video with the cell phone placed on your thigh.

Watching virtual reality with a transmitting smartphone in front of your eyes.

When phones are tested in these position of close body contact, radiation levels in the body tissue near the phone can exceed current regulatory limits up to 9 times the US levels, as documented by the French government agency tests.

In addition, current regulatory mandated cell phone radiation tests are set only to avoid heating the body and do not consider the vulnerability of a child's developing brain, a pregnant abdomen, or the sperm of a man wishing to father a healthy child.

Critically important, numerous studies have linked exposure to radiofrequency radiation with altered brain development as well as additional damage to male and female reproduction.

Contrary to claims in some media coverage, the National Toxicology Program findings did not provide a clean bill of health. As the National Institutes of Health declared in its press release on February 2, 2018:

"The incidence of tumors, called malignant schwannomas, that were observed in the heart increased in male rats as they were exposed to increasing levels of RFR beyond the allowable cell phone emissions. Researchers also noted increases in an unusual pattern of cardiomyopathy, or damage to heart tissue, in exposed male and female rats."

Based on these and other peer-reviewed findings, if radiofrequency radiation were a drug, it would have been pulled off the market. The public would have been instructed to limit and minimize use in order to address the risks raised by peer-reviewed studies on brain development, sleep and fertility and other biologically important endpoints from oxidative stress to headaches to hearing and vision problems, especially in children.

For more than three decades, in response to the NTP and other scientific findings of increased biological impacts from cell phone radiation, statements are often made such as "Additional studies are needed before any firm conclusions can be drawn." These statements calling for more research are used as if they are proof of safety. They are not.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has repeatedly called for an update to our outdated cell phone and wireless radiation public exposure limits in order to adequately protect children and male and female reproductive health.

In fact, as the Cleveland Clinic and many other organizations explicitly advise, men who want to father healthy children should not keep cell phones in their pockets except on airplane mode or powered off. Radiation emissions from most wireless laptops, tablets, personal assistant wireless devices, etc. are tested at a distance of 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) between the device and a large adult male body. These devices should not be placed on laps. Yet the public has not been informed of this information and most people use this technology close to their body unaware they can exceed allowable limits.

Cell phones are not toys but they are two-way microwave transmitting and receiving radios. Governments of high-tech countries such as France, Israel, India, and Switzerland, and over a dozen others recommend reducing exposure to cell phone radiation. Local, state and federal governments are also issuing policies to limit cell phones in the classroom. This is to avoid distracting and damaging psycho-social consequences as well as to reduce the long-term physical health risks.

We are in the midst of a vast and uncontrolled experiment on ourselves and our children.

As the California Department of Public Health, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and international doctors' organizations such as the Cyprus and Vienna Medical Associations have recently recommended, we should take simple steps to reduce our exposure to cell phone radiation including the use of speakerphone and airtube headsets. The public also needs to be aware that home or office cordless phone systems are small base stations that emit microwave radiation. In all instances, children's exposure should be minimized as much as possible.

As a new report from the National Institute for Science, Law & Public Policy has indicated, because of serious national security concerns as well as public health and safety issues it is important to have land lines that are wired.

The findings of the National Toxicology Program studies clearly confirm the need to conduct pre-market studies into the health risks posed by any new technology and communications infrastructure utilizing non-ionizing radiation- such as 5G technology. Over 236 scientists from 41 nations who have published peer-reviewed research on this issue are appealing to the United Nations for stronger regulations to reduce public exposure. Concerned scientists have sent a declaration to the European Commission calling for a moratorium on the deployment of cell antennas for the planned 5G expansion until potential health impacts have been fully investigated.

Urgent measures are needed to reduce exposures to the public and especially for children.

Miller MD, a longtime advisor to the World Health Organization and senior advisor to Environmental Health Trust (EHT) has issued a statement that the recently released findings from the $25M NIH/NIEHS National Toxicology Program (NTP) cell phone radiofrequency radiation carcinogenicity studies combined with human epidemiology studies "conclusively confirms that radiofrequency radiation is a category 1 human carcinogen." EHT is a scientific think tank focused on preventable environmental health risks and will be publishing a series of expert reactions to the NTP technical reports this week.

"In the NTP rat study there was a significant increase in incidence of schwannomas of the heart in the animals exposed to radiofrequency radiation, with a dose-response relationship in male rats, as well as the occurrence of gliomas of the brain, though this increase was not statistically significant. Further, a significant increase in DNA damage was observed in hippocampus cells of the brain of male rats exposed to radiofrequency radiation.

In the NTP mouse study, there was a significant positive trend in the incidence of alveolar/bronchiolar adenoma or carcinoma (combined) of the lung in males exposed to radiofrequency radiation, while compared to the sham controls, all exposed groups of females had increased incidence of malignant lymphoma. Further, significant increases in DNA damage were observed in cells of the frontal cortex of male mice exposed to radiofrequency radiation.

In interpreting these findings, it is important to bear in mind that because of species differences, there may not be an increase in incidence of the same tumors as seen in mankind. Further, although these were large and well-conducted animal studies, the relative rarity of the tumors showing an increase in incidence means that it may be difficult to demonstrate significant increases in incidence which may be seen in the very much larger numbers of humans exposed to radiofrequency radiation.

In the National Toxicology Program study, the number of animals in the radiofrequency radiation studies was several thousand. However, in the world today the amount of people using cell phones is estimated at 5 billion.

Even a small rise in very rare cancers from cell phone radiation would constitute a serious public health concern due to the fact that billions of people are using cell phones.

Exposure is widespread and increasing. Children are more vulnerable. Cell phone radiation penetrates deeper into their bodies and they will have a lifetime of exposure leading to a higher cancer risk.

This animal evidence, together with the extensive human evidence from case-control studies on brain cancer in Sweden, France, Canada and other countries, coupled with the rising incidence of brain cancers in young people in the USA, conclusively confirms that radiofrequency radiation is a category 1 human carcinogen. We cannot ignore this but must act quickly to reduce exposure to radiofrequency radiation from all sources to as low as reasonably achievable, especially for children."

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/02/2018 -- The National Toxicology Program (NTP) division of the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is releasing the full results of its multi-year study on mice and rats exposed to cell phone radiation today at noon EST.

The NTP will hold a media telebriefing to answer questions Friday, Feb. 2, 1:00 p.m. EST.

"The NTP tested the hypothesis that cell phone radiation could not cause health effects. This hypothesis has now been disproved because partial results the NTP released last year show cell phone radiation has adverse effects. These same cells that became cancerous in rats are the same cells that are reported to turn into tumors in people in epidemiology studies of cellphone users," remarked Ronald L. Melnick, PhD, Advisor to Environmental Health Trust (EHT) and the senior NIEHS toxicologist who designed the National Toxicology Program (NTP) study.

Melnick pointed out that "the NTP also reported DNA damage in some of the exposed animal groups. For children cancer risks may be greater than that for adults because of greater penetration in the brains of children."

"People could be receiving cell phone radiation exposures into their body that are far higher than the NTP studies. Recent tests on hundreds of phones tested by the French government found that most phones exceeded government allowable levels when they were tested in positions where the phone was touching the body. Some phones had radiation levels that were up to an estimated 9 times the allowable US limits," stated Devra Davis, PhD, MPH, President of EHT referring to the scandal dubbed "Phonegate" after the French government agency refused to release the tests.

"Phones do not belong in pockets, laps or bras," Davis said pointing to the Cleveland Clinics recommendations to keep phones away from the body after their research found sperm was damaged after exposure to cell phone radiation.

"Even if there are no new findings from this report. We have more than enough scientific evidence of harm to make policy changes. This is not just about cancer, peer reviewed research has also found many other effects, including damage to brain development," she said pointing to a Yale study that found mice exposed to cell phone radiation during pregnancy had poorer memory and increased hyperactivity.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/20/2017 -- The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) just issued long-awaited recommendations to reduce microwave radiation exposures from cell phones, especially for children due to research showing that "long-term, high use may impact human health." The CDPH guidance was spurred by a lawsuit from Berkeley Professor Joel Moskowitz which revealed that CDPH scientists had drafted more than 27 versions of advice since 2008.

"Cell phones came on the market decades ago without safety testing because it was assumed that non-ionizing radiation could not cause cancer. However the scientific evidence is now clear and compelling, this type of radiation is harmful to our health, " stated Dr. Devra Davis, founder and President of Environmental Health Trust, a research nonprofit.

Davis pointed to a new study funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences just published by Kaiser Permanente scientists in the journal Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) that found women with the highest magnetic field exposures during pregnancy had nearly three times more miscarriages confirming a 2012 study with similar findings. Davis notes that Kaiser principal investigator De-Kun Li, MD, PhD has previously published findings linking higher prenatal nonionizing radiation exposures to a higher risk of obesity, and a higher risk of asthma.

"California cited effects on sperm, memory, sleep and headaches. Most of the public is unaware that scientific studies have found damage to brain development from exposure to nonionizing radiation, specifically the microwaves from cell phones. More than a dozen nations have already made public recommendations to lower exposures to microwave radiating devices, especially for children. France released data this year confirming that when cell phones are used in direct contact with their body – the radiation into our bodies can exceed current regulatory limits," Davis added.

The new three-page CDPH guidance includes practical steps to reduce exposures to cell phone radiation, including keeping the phone away from the body, reducing cell phone use when the signal is weak, reducing the use of cell phones to stream videos and not sleeping with your cell phone.

"I hope California will expand their advice to include all of the other sources of this type of radiation in our everyday environment and offer practical solutions to decrease exposures in public places and the workplace," stated Dr. Davis commenting on the fact the newly published advisory focuses only on reducing radiation from cell phones, however early versions included specific recommendations for state employees to lower exposures to cordless phones as well as cell phones.

Public Health Advice by Governments

San Francisco became the first city in the country to pass and adopt cell phone safety legislation in 2011, but the full ordinance was blocked in 2012 after a three year court battle with the wireless industry. Greenbelt, Maryland, Burlingame, California, Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Pembroke Pines, Florida have taken action to inform the public. Former President of Microsoft Canada and NIH scientist who led landmark study echo new call from California Dept of Health on reducing cell phone radiation

Scientific lecture marks the first-time European government test results were shared with US audience.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/23/2017 -- French physician Dr. Marc Arazi presented recently released results of cell phone tests conducted by France's national government agency ANFR that found most cell phones can emit more radiation into human users than manufacturers report. The France documentation shows that many cell phones on the market can exceed allowable limits by over three times. The cell phone radiation absorption measurements of the over 350 cell phones France tested were presented in an expert scientific symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on July 31, 2017 sponsored by Environmental Health Trust. This lecture marks the first time the test measurements have been presented in the United States by an expert from France.

"In France, we have a government agency that has been testing phones next to the body since 2012. We have recently had these results released and they clearly show that most phones—9 out of 10 in 2015—exceed current allowable limits by over 3 times," stated Dr. Arazi.

Although France began testing cell phones in 2012, the measurements were not released until June 1, 2017 after months of pressure from Arazi. The newly released French documents revealed government safety limits are significantly breached when government tests mimicked the real-world scenario of zero distance between the phone and the user—i.e. holding the phone in your bra, shirt or pants pocket, or any other body contact position.

Dr. Arazi explained that manufacturers are not required to perform cell phone radiation tests in these direct body contact positions. Instead, manufacturers submit cell phone reports to governments based on radiation tests conducted by placing a specific distance between the phone and the user. Most cell phones are tested at between 10 to 25 mm distance from the body.

Dr. Arazi showed how when the government tested phones at body contact, the levels were over seven times higher than the levels when phones were tested at the manufacturer's stated separation distance. This increase resulted in many phones having levels that exceeded the European government's safety limits—levels were over 3 times higher than the limits. However, the phones were still marked as "compliant" because regulations do not require body contact testing.

"This is not just an European issue, it is an international scandal, "stated Dr. Arazi, pointing out that all countries' regulations are outdated. "Professor Om Gandhi—one of the originators of the test limits 30 years ago—says that if these numbers were converted to the US testing regime, we are talking about the reality that some cell phones exceed US regulatory limits by over 9 times the limit."

Prohibition placed on advertising cell phones to children under 14 and wireless internet banned from nursery school.

Longtime World Health Organization advisor updates opinion linking wireless exposures to cancer based on new scientific evidence.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/16/2017 -- An expert cancer researcher and advisor to the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO/IARC) has issued his scientific opinion that radiofrequency (RF) radiation from any source – such as the signals emitted by cell phones, other wireless and cordless and sensor devices, and wireless networks – fully meets criteria to be classified as a "Group 1 carcinogenic to humans" agent, based on scientific evidence associating RF exposure to cancer development and cancer promotion.

"The evidence indicating wireless is carcinogenic has increased and can no longer be ignored," stated Dr. Anthony B. Miller at a July 31, 2017 lecture in Jackson Hole, Wyoming sponsored by the Environmental Health Trust where international experts presented the best available science on cell phone and wireless radiation. In 2011, WHO/IARC classified RF radiation from any source as a "Group 2B possibly carcinogenic to human" agent. Miller believes the evidence published since 2011 fulfills the requirements to re-classify RF radiation as a "Group 1 carcinogenic to humans" agent.

Miller explained that the basis for his opinion includes recent scientific publications which include the 2017 re-analysis of data from the Interphone study, the 2014 French National CERENAT Study, several new publications on Swedish cancer data, and the 2016 results of the National Toxicology Program.

Dr. Anthony B. Miller is a physician epidemiologist who specializes in cancer etiology, prevention, and screening. Miller is Professor Emeritus at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health of the University of Toronto and Senior Medical Advisor to the Environmental Health Trust. He has been a longtime advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) and was Senior Epidemiologist for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). He served as Director of the Epidemiology Unit of the National Cancer Institute of Canada, Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics at the University of Toronto, Head of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology at the German Cancer Research Centre, and Consultant to the Division of Cancer Prevention of the U.S. National Cancer Institute. He has performed research about electromagnetic fields and cancer and has served on many committees assessing carcinogenicity of various exposures. Miller was visiting Senior Scientist in the IARC Monographs programme as a reviewer to the scientific literature supporting designation of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields (RF-EMF) as a Group 2B possible carcinogen in 2011.

Other experts agree that the increased evidence now establishes RF radiation as a human carcinogen. For example, researchers Dr. Lennart Hardell and Michael Carlberg have published several epidemiological studies that found increased brain cancer associated with long-term cell phone use and conclude that "RF radiation should be regarded as a human carcinogen causing glioma." In addition, published epidemiological research has also found persons diagnosed with brain cancer had decreased survival rates associated with higher wireless phone use.

In response to skeptics who claim, "There is no evidence," researchers point to published research that has consistently found increased cancer risk in well-designed case control studies that have looked at persons who used cell phones for more than ten years.

The July 31, 2017 panel presentation included international experts. Dr. Annie Sasco presented the WHO/IARC process used to classify carcinogenic agents. Dr. Devra Davis presented research finding wireless radiation results in sperm damage and alters brain development. Dr. Moe Mellion presented Dr. Iris Udasin's clinical cases of World Trade Center first responders who developed brain cancer after combined environmental exposures to chemical toxins and wireless radiation. Theodora Scarato, MSW presented policies enacted by governments worldwide to reduce RF radiation exposures. Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/05/2017 -- Under court order, the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) of France has just disclosed that most cell phones exceed government radiation limits when tested the way they are used, next to the body. Manufacturers are not required to test phones in shirt or pants pockets. French government tests on hundreds of cell phones reveal that in 2015, 9 out of 10 phones exceed the manufacturer's reported radiation test levels when re-tested in positions where the phone is in contact with the body. The government had refused to disclose these test results until French physician Dr. Marc Arazi pursued legal action.

On June 1, 2017, ANFR posted the details of the make, model and test results for each phone that was tested. Popular brands such as Apple, Motorola, Samsung and Nokia were among the cell phone models tested. When tested in contact with the body, some phones have test results as high as triple the manufacturer's previously reported radiation levels.

"As a physician, I am deeply concerned about what this means for our health and especially the health of our children. People have a right to know that when cell phones are tested in ways people commonly use phones - such as in direct contact with their body - the values exceed current regulatory limits. This is a first victory for transparency in this industry scandal," commented Arazi.

"It is clear that the testing methods used by cell phone manufacturers are inadequate. The tests need to be updated to represent the way their customers are using these devices. If the new testing results in not meeting federal guidelines, the manufacturers should invest in the necessary research and development to reduce the radiation that is emitted" stated Frank Clegg, currently CEO of Canadians for Safe Technology (C4ST) and former longtime president of Microsoft Canada.

Ricocheting in headlines throughout France, Arazi and his colleagues have coined the situation as "PhoneGate" because of the parallels to "Diesel Gate" - the Volkswagen emissions saga. Devra Davis, PhD, President of Environmental Health Trust explained, "Volkswagen cars passed diesel emission tests when tested in laboratory conditions, but when the cars were driven on real roads, they emitted far more fumes. In the same way, every one of these cell phones 'passed' laboratory radiation SAR tests. These phones are legally considered compliant. However, when these phones are tested in the ways that people actually use them in real life, such as in your jeans pocket or bra, the amount of absorbed radiation emissions in our bodies violates the regulatory limits."

"This is an enormous international scandal. This is not only about France and Europe, as this applies to all persons who use cell phones in every country. If phones were tested in the ways we use them, they would be illegal. Even more concerning is that the regulatory limits do not protect the public from adverse health effects related to long-term exposures," Davis commented, pointing to recently published research study in the American Journal of Epidemiology found cell phones associated with a doubled risk of glioma, a type of brain cancer. Studies performed by the US National Toxicology Program found glioma and DNA damage increased in rats exposed to long-term cell phone radiation.

"I see children cradling cell phones in their laps as their mothers do grocery shopping. Teenagers are sleeping with cell phones and pregnant women rest phones on their abdomen. Parents have a right to know that when children use cell phones in these ways, their bodies are absorbing wireless radiation at levels that exceed limits set for adults, last updated twenty years ago" stated Theodora Scarato MSW, Program Director at Environmental Health Trust, referring to how the American Academy of Pediatrics issued recommendations to reduce cell phone radiation exposures to children and has repeatedly called on the US Government to update cell phone testing protocols.

France's National Agency of Health Security of Food, Environment and Labour (ANSES) July 2016 report "Radiofrequency Exposure and the Health of Children" conceded that it was "unlikely that people, especially children, are aware of the conditions of use close to the body, as defined by manufacturers."

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) released similar findings of cell phone radiation levels that exceeded federal limits this year in their investigation of cell phone radiation. The CBC survey of more than 11,000 Canadians found that more than 80 percent were unaware of manufacturers' recommended separation distance and 67 percent admitted they carry their phones against their bodies.

In California, the City of Berkeley was sued by the CTIA, when the City passed an ordinance mandating consumers are informed of these manufacturers' instructions by retail stores. The CTIA argued that the "Right To Know Ordinance" violated free speech rights and recently lost their case in court when the judges ruled that the Ordinance was "in the public interest".

After litigation by UC Berkeley public health professor Dr. Joel Moskowitz, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) released cell phone guidance that the Department scientists had drafted, but withheld from publicly posting for seven years. The guidelines aimed inform the public from possible health impacts from cell phone radiation.

Litigation is moving forward involving more than a dozen people in the U.S. who claim their brain cancer is related to their cell phone use. In Italy, a recent court ruling recognized a link between cellphone use and brain tumors and granted lifetime compensation to a man who developed a brain tumor after 15 years of work related cell phone use.

"Why does the public have to sue to get this information?" Scarato asked. "And what about children in schools? court ruling and Protection Advisory Council has recommended that schools reduce radiofrequency radiation exposures to children by installing wired networks rather than Wi-Fi. Yet at the same time, schools are now allowing or even insisting children bring cell phones into classrooms. I am sure most of those children are carrying these phones from class to class in their pockets close to their body. They are not aware of the radiation exposures."

Since 2010, French law has ensured that SAR levels are placed prominently on cell phone packaging and the sale of cell phones was banned for young children. French legislation in 2015 included several new policies aimed at reducing exposure to radiofrequency radiation. Arazi called on the Health and Environment Ministers and Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention Agency to take immediate action on this new information by informing the public and issuing new protective policies.

New analysis in American Journal of Epidemiology finds doubling of brain cancer in persons using cell phones over 558 hours

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/31/2017 -- A new report published this week in American Journal of Epidemiology confirms that Canadians who have used cellphones for 558 hours or more have more than a doubled risk of brain cancer. These important findings strengthen the association between cell phone use and glioma, which is an aggressive brain cancer.

The original 13-nation Interphone study for the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization reported a 40% increase in brain cancer for those using phones for 1640 lifetime hours. This new study found that Canadians had more than a doubled glioma risk when they were analyzed apart from the 12 other countries.

"This study adds more evidence linking cell phone use with brain cancer. We believe the criteria has been met for radio frequency radiation to be classified as a probable human carcinogen. The Italian Court of Ivrea rules telecom employee to be paid lifetime damages for brain tumor developed after heavy cellphone use.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/26/2017 -- The Italian Court of Ivrea is the first Court in the world to recognize a causal link between cellphone use and brain tumors in an April 11, 2017 ruling that awarded a telecom employee, Roberto Romeo, lifetime damages of 500 euros per month after he developed a brain tumor from fifteen years of cell phone use. The ruling has made international headlines as the court's expert refused to accept telecom industry funded studies as evidence.

"Judgment recognizes the causal link between a brain tumor and the use of a cell phone." This is quoted from the verdict issued by Judge Luca Fadda of the Court of Ivrea. The state social security agency must pay Romeo for the damages from the brain tumor, which resulted in loss of hearing in one ear. He had used the company cellphone for three hours per day for 15 years.

"Recent studies from the U.S National Toxicology Program found that animals develop the same types of tumors that are increased in the brains of long term cell phone users. This research adds to a significant body of evidence finding serious adverse effects from cell phone radiation. We must take steps to reduce exposures at this time," stated Devra Davis, President of the Environmental Health Trust pointing to a recently published 2017 research review by Swedish researchers Michael Carlberg and Lennart Hardell of epidemiology and laboratory studies which concluded that "RF radiation should be regarded as a human carcinogen causing glioma."

"I had no choice but to use my mobile to talk to colleagues and organise work—for 15 years I was calling all the time, from home, in the car," states Romeo as quoted in The Guardian, "I started to have the feeling of my right ear being blocked all the time and the tumour was diagnosed in 2010. Happily, it was benign but I can no longer hear anything because they had to remove my acoustic nerve."

According to the Associated Press, "The Codacons Consumer Protection agency says it is considering a class-action based on the Romeo decision to have cellphones carry health warnings in Italy, and also to have the health risks associated with cellphone use recognized generally by Italy's social security agency."

The court's expert refused to accept into evidence studies that were funded by the telecom industry. Davis pointed to several peer reviewed published research studies that have documented how industry funding is linked to the outcome on cell phone radiation studies. A 2017 literature review and meta-analysis of case–control studies published in Neurological Sciences found a significant correlation between study quality and outcome with higher quality studies showing a statistically significant association between mobile phone use and risk of brain tumor. The source of funding was found to affect the quality of results produced by the studies.

Lawyers Stefano Bertone and Renato Ambrosio stated, "For the first time in the world, a court has recognised a causal link between inappropriate use of a mobile phone and a brain tumour."

CBC investigation films standard cell phone testing showing high radiation exposures when phones are simulated in positions like pocket, bra or lap.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/28/2017 -- An independently commissioned investigation by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) found that when cell phones were radiation tested in the ways devices are commonly used—such as in the pocket, bra or lap—the radiation detected inside the user's body surpassed the government allowable maximum level. In this week's CBC award-winning Marketplace program entitled "The secret inside your cellphone," acclaimed reporter Wendy Mesley announced results from a US government certified testing laboratory. The investigation found that three popular phone models—iPhone, Galaxy, and Samsung—are below regulated maximums for radiation when they are tested at a specified distance away from the body and head. However, the CBC program revealed that when phones are tested directly against the body, the radiation is multiplied by three to four times and exceeds government limits.

The CBC found most people are unaware that all cell phone manufacturers' instructions specify that there should be a distance between the phone and the user's body in order not to be exposed to untested levels of radiation. CBC conducted an independent survey of more than 11,000 Canadians to determine if the public knew about these instructions to distance phones from their bodies. The survey found more than 80 percent "had no clue" and 67 percent admitted they carry their phones against their bodies.

"The public needs to be informed that cell phones are not safe as they are typically used. Remember these outdated guidelines were set for a large male adult and do not take into account the millions of children regularly keeping such devices on their bodies for hours at a time. We have known for a decade that phones violate radiation guidelines when tested in the ways they typically are used," stated Devra Davis, PhD, MPH, President of Environmental Health Trust (EHT), who was featured in the CBC investigation.

Davis points out, "Along with over a dozen other countries, the American Academy of Pediatrics and Consumer Reports have issued recommendations to reduce exposure to cell phones." Davis further states, "Even if cell phones met current guidelines, those guidelines do not ensure safety especially for children."

"There are dozens and dozens of studies that we presented to Health Canada that show harm can occur at levels below Canada's guidelines," stated Frank Clegg, former President of Microsoft Canada, urging for updates to Canada's highly contested Safety Code 6. Clegg now heads Canadians for Safe Technology, a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization striving for healthier communities by educating about dangerous levels of radiation from technology. He referred to experimental studies showing damage to sperm, pregnancy and the nervous system following exposures to cell phone radiation, noting that men who keep phones in their pockets have significantly poorer sperm quality and quantity.

"The most embarrassing thing about this investigation," said Clegg, "is that the Federal Government already knows the manufacturers have fine-print warnings on the cell phones. These warnings need to come to the front of the box in big letters where we can see them, and at the point of sale where we buy our phones. If manufacturers know they fail the safety standards, if the federal government knows, if our national broadcaster knows, then it should not be kept secret from the person buying the product."

When CBC Marketplace asked for comment, Apple referred to advice inside their phones about their specified separation distances and stated, "We have no comment to add to your story."

"Millions of children use cell phones and wireless devices every day. Many people carry cell phones in their jeans pocket tight against their body. Many women tuck cell phones in the bra or spandex pants they wear. People have a right to know that all wireless devices—not only cell phones but cordless home phones, tablets and many other wireless devices have instructions from the manufacturer about separation distances to put at least that distance between the transmitting antennae and the person so that radiation levels inside the body added by the phone are not higher than government regulations," stated Davis. Davis recently authored an article about the Maryland State Advisory Council's recommendations to restrict Wi-Fi in school, published in The Baltimore Sun.

Davis notes that tablets and other wireless devices held directly on laps also will likely violate the tested distance as most devices are regulatory tested at least 8 inches away from the body, adding that the arms of many young children do not extend to that length.

The CBC Marketplace episode takes viewers to Berkeley, California, Washington, DC and several locations in Canada to see what government, research, and technology experts say, and what the public thinks.

The CBC program features Berkeley's Right To Know Law unanimously passed in 2015 requiring cell phone retailers to provide a notice to their customers that "If you carry or use your phone in a pants or shirt pocket or tucked into a bra when the phone is ON and connected to a wireless network, you may exceed the federal guidelines for exposure to RF radiation."

The CBC program showed the importance of such a law, which is being defended pro bono by Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig, former Director of the Safra Center for Ethics. The cell phone industry attorney in this case, Theodore Olson, has also represented the tobacco firms.

Cell phone radiation concern made headlines earlier this month when a court ordered the California Department of Public Health to release suppressed advisory guidelines on "Cell Phones and Health" to University of Berkeley Professor Dr. Joel Moskowitz. Originally drafted in 2010, the released California Public Health Cell Phones guidance states, "Health officials are concerned about possible health effects from cell phone EMFs because some recent studies suggest that long-term cell phone use may increase the risk of brain cancer and other health problems."

A decade ago, in 2007, University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute was the first US medical institution to issue warnings about the health effects of cell phone radiation, and the Director Dr. Herberman sent a memo to the Cancer Institute's 3,000 faculty and staff. The fine print distance warnings were discussed in 2008 and 2009 US Congressional hearings on the health effects of cell phone radiation.

"The findings of the NTP constitute important signals that there are very serious health issues tied with microwave radiation from cell phones and other devices," adds Ronald Melnick, PhD, a Senior Advisor to the EHT and formerly a Senior Scientist with the US government's National Toxicology Program. Two page California document cautions children and pregnant women just as the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute did in 2007.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/09/2017 -- A "Cell Phones and Health" advisory was just released by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) via a California Superior Court order. The document states, "health officials are concerned about possible health effects from cell phone EMFs because some recent studies suggest that long-term cell phone use may increase the risk of brain cancer and other health problems." For three years, the CDPH refused to release the document to Dr. Joel Moskowitz, a Berkeley Professor, arguing that such advice would cause "undue panic." Guidance on cell phones was first issued in the United States a decade ago, in 2007, when the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute issued the first US medical warnings about cell phones to the public and even sent a memo to the Cancer Institute's 3,000 faculty and staff.

"The public has a right to know now who ordered the California Health Department to suppress that simple warning," stated Devra Davis, PhD, MPH, President of the Environmental Health Trust (EHT) and former Director of the University's Center for Environmental Oncology issued the cell phone safety advice in 2007 with Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, Director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and added that "the American Academy of Pediatrics and Consumer Reports have both issued recommendations to reduce exposure to cell phones along with over a dozen other countries."

The just released California document recommends people keep the phone away from the brain and body especially for children stating, "EMFs can pass deeper into a child's brain than an adult's. Also, the brain is still developing through the teen years, which may make children and teens more sensitive to EMF exposures." The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute's 2007 advice also details children's vulnerability and recommends, "Do not allow children to use a cell phone, except for emergencies. The developing organs of a fetus or child are the most likely to be sensitive to any possible effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields."

In 2015 CDPH denied the request to release the document stating, "In light of the updated guidance issued by the CDC [US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control] in June of 2014, CDPH has chosen not to issue a guidance document on radio frequency EMF and cell phones." However, Davis points out that the CDC retracted the June cell phone guidance within three months of issue. The CDC had issued new advice to the public to reduce exposure to cell phone radiation in June 2014 warning that children are more vulnerable stating, "along with many organizations worldwide, we recommend caution...If RF does cause health problems, kids who use cell phones may have a higher chance of developing these health problems in the future."

However, by August of 2014, this and other language was removed because, according the internal CDC documents obtained by EHT, "We thought the struck language was hard to understand,"and the CDC website was reworded to state that, "some organizations recommend caution in cell phone use. More research is needed before we know if using cell phones causes health effects." The statement on children disappeared.

"Why didn't the California Department of Health move to issue guidance after the CDC retracted their cautionary advice? The CDC not only retracted the clear advice to reduce exposure, but also eliminated information on children's higher risk and also eliminated the International Agency for the Research on Cancer's classification of wireless as a possible carcinogen," stated Davis who also pointed out that an industry consultant was hired by the CDC to consult on their non-ionizing radiation website content in 2014.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA CELL PHONE HEALTH DOCUMENT

In 2010, health professionals in the Environmental Health Investigations Branch of California Department of Public Health prepared a cell phone guidance document that summarized the science regarding the health risks from cell phone radiation and provided precautionary recommendations to the public for limiting personal exposure. Dr. Joel Moskowitz, Professor at University of California Berkeley School of Public Health learned of the document in 2013 and submitted several formal requests for the document under the California Public Records Act (CPRA) starting in January 2014 but was denied.

The Environmental Law Clinic at the University of California, Berkeley Law School and the First Amendment Project represented Dr. Moskowitz pro bono and filed a lawsuit for the document's release in May 2016, with the Superior Court of the County of Sacramento California.

In February 2017, Judge Shellyanne Chang issued a ruling which over-ruled eight of the nine objections submitted by the Attorney General and directed CDPH to release the "Cell Phone and Health" Guidance documentation.

In response to CDPH's argument that disclosing the document would cause "undue panic and unnecessary doctor or medical visits," Judge Shellyanne Chang stated, "This concern is paternalistic. The public has a right to be informed of the health risks associated with activities so that the public can make informed decisions before participating in those activities."

In a 2017 International Conference of the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies held at Hebrew University, Dr. Anthony Miller— long-term advisor at the World Health Organization's IARC, and advisor to Environmental Health Trust detailed the current epidemiological research on long-term cell phone users and stated that his overall conclusions are that "the evidence has increased" and "radiofrequency fields should be considered a probable cause of human cancer."

Davis points out that "the government was informed on the need for precautions a decade ago." In 2008 Dr. Ronald B. Herberman testified to a Congressional Subcommittee on cell phone radiation stating, "I recognized that there was sufficient evidence to justify the precautionary advisories that had been issued in other countries, to alert people about the possibility of harm from long-term, frequent cell phone use, especially by young children. Then, Dr. Davis and I consulted with international experts in the biology of radiofrequency (RF) effects and the epidemiology of brain tumors, and with experts in neurology, oncology and neurosurgery at UPCI. Without exception, all of the experts contacted confirmed my impression that there was a sound basis to make the case for precaution."

The number of sweat ducts within human skin varies from two million to four million. The researchers pointed to replicated peer research of these biological effects in laboratory research conducted in other countries and considered this mechanism of action well proven.

Today's cellular and Wi-Fi networks rely on microwaves – a type of electromagnetic radiation utilizing frequencies up to 6 gigahertz (GHz) in order to wirelessly transmit voice or data. However, 5 G applications will require unlocking of new spectrum bands in higher frequency ranges above 6 GHz to 100 GHz and beyond, utilizing submillimeter and millimeter waves – to allow ultra-high rates of data to be transmitted in the same amount of time as compared with previous deployments of microwave radiation.

The conference at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies at Hebrew University (IIAS) was organized in cooperation with the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the Environmental Health Trust (EHT).

Verizon just announced that 5G networks will be tested in 11 U.S. cities. 5G Networks will involve the deployment of millions of antennas nationwide, thousands in each city, because millimeter waves cannot easily travel through buildings or other obstacles. Proposed installations have led to public outcry in residential areas where homeowners do not want antennas mounted at their yards or near schools.

Several researchers at the conference raised concerns that current regulations are not adequate to protect public health.

"There is an urgent need to evaluate 5G health effects now before millions are exposed. We need to know if 5G increases the risk of skin diseases such as melanoma or other skin cancers," stated Ron Melnick, the National Institutes of Health scientist, now retired, who led the design of the National Toxicology Program study on cell phone radiofrequency radiation.

Dariusz Leszczynski, PhD, Chief Editor of Radiation and Health, stated that the international organization – called ICNIRP – developing recommendations for public exposure limits of these higher frequencies was planning to classify all the skin in the human body as belonging to the limbs rather than to the head or torso. Leszczynski cautioned that, "If you classify skin as limbs – no matter where the skin is – you are permitted to expose it more than otherwise."

Cyprus Minister of Education issues new Decree to minimize wireless radiation exposure to children in schools and require parental consent

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/06/2017 -- The Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture issued a Decree on January 31, 2017, marked "urgent" to all Directors of Kindergartens and Primary Schools, with specific measures to eliminate and minimize wireless radiation exposure to children in schools. "We have taken the decision to have the wireless network Wi-Fi disabled in all Public kindergartens in Cyprus," reads the Decree. Wireless is to be removed from all Cyprus kindergartens, and wireless installations have been halted in elementary schools and limited to administrative offices.

"The Ministry of Education does not intend to proceed with the installation of wireless points and Wi-Fi access classrooms in elementary schools."

The Decree reminds teachers that wired internet is already available in all classrooms if the internet is needed for educational purposes. Wireless is only to be used, if needed, in the administrative areas of elementary schools, and wireless is not to be used in the classrooms.

However, if the use of Wi-Fi is deemed necessary for a specific educational program, the Decree stipulates that, "necessary measures to protect children should be taken, and wireless access points should remain inactive when not in use for teaching purposes." Furthermore, "the consent of parents should be ensured in advance." The Decree instructs the School Directors to assure parental consent and send a letter to the parents of children who will participate in programs involving wireless technology - informing the parents of the reason and duration of Wi-Fi usage.

Alongside their other campaigns about tobacco smoke and toxic chemicals, The Cyprus National Committee on Environment and Child Health initiated a nationwide campaign several years ago to raise awareness about cell phone and wireless radiation exposures to children. The multimedia public awareness campaign was lauded at an international conference on Wireless and Health held at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies at Hebrew University in January of 2017, and organized in cooperation with the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and Environmental Health Trust (EHT).

In the United States, the Maryland State Children's Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council recently issued a Report advising the Department of Education to recommend all school districts in the State of Maryland install wired—rather than wireless—internet connections for classrooms. This action represents the first action of a state advisory body to issue guidance on wireless exposures. Children’s environmental health experts respond to new US study linking wireless radiofrequency radiation to cancer after the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reducing radiofrequency exposures.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/03/2017 -- After reviewing new and growing evidence on health risks of wireless radiation, the Maryland State Children's Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council (CEHPAC) issued a Report advising the Department of Education to recommend local school districts reduce classroom wireless radiation exposures by providing wired-rather than wireless-internet connections. CEHPAC's health experts include Governor appointed pediatricians, Maryland State House/Senate appointees and representatives of the Department of Education and Department of Health. Theodora Scarato, MSW, of the Environmental Health Trust, first brought the issue to the Council's attention three years ago, in February of 2014. The Council cited the recent US National Toxicology Program (NTP) findings of increased rates of rare malignant cancers in animals, as well as children's unique vulnerability to the radiation in their recommendations to minimize exposure.

Several countries, such as France, Israel and Cyprus, already have protective measures minimizing school wireless radiation exposures as national policy. However, CEHPAC's action to issue recommendations to reduce classroom wireless exposures is the first of its kind by an expert state body in the United States.

The Children's Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council recommends:

1. "The Maryland State Department of Education should recommend that local school systems consider using wired devices" "WiFi can be turned off" and instead "a wired local area network (LAN) can provide a reliable and secure form of networking...without any microwave electromagnetic field exposure."

2. New construction and renovations: "If a new classroom is to be built, or electrical work is to be carried out in an existing classroom, network cables can be added at the same time, providing wired (not wireless) network access with minimal extra cost and time."

3. The Maryland State Department of Education should recommend that local school systems use strategies to minimize exposures: "Have children place devices on desks to serve as barrier between the device and children's bodies; Locate laptops in the classroom in a way that keeps pupil heads as far away from the laptop screens (where the antennas are) as practicable; Consider using screens designed to reduce eyestrain; Consider using a switch to shut down the router when it is not in use."

4. "The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene should provide suggestions to the public on ways to reduce exposure: Sit away from WiFi routers, especially when people are using it to access the internet. Turn off the wireless on your laptop when you are not using it. Turn off WiFi on smartphones and tablets when not surfing the web. Switch tablets to airplane mode to play games or watch videos stored on the device."

5. "The General Assembly should consider funding education and research on electromagnetic radiation and health as schools add WiFi to classrooms."

6. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene should "ask the United States Department of Health and Human Services to formally petition the FCC to revisit the exposure limit to ensure it is protective of children's health and that it relies on current science."

7. The Report should be shared with the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Federal Communications Commission, Maryland State Department of Education and Maryland General Assembly.

"While this report focused on WiFi radiation in schools, there are additional concerns about mobile phones and cell phone towers. CEHPAC plans to look at these broader issues over the next year," the CEHPAC Council Report states.

"21st century learning should include 21st century science," Scarato pointed to research that found wireless alters brain development in addition to increasing cancer. "Corded non-wireless connections in school are an important part of a safe and healthy school environment, respecting not only our children but also the teachers and staff."

Referring to the fact that US wireless public exposure limits were set in 1996, without testing for long term safety, the CEHPAC Council Report also stated that, "decades-old standards need updating in light of new science." Such statements are in line with the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has also called for a regulatory review and states that children's brains are less mature and can absorb proportionately twice the wireless radiation as an adult because of children's thinner skulls that contain more fluid.

In response to the 2016 NTP study findings of a cancer link, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Consumer Reports, Obstetricians and several Medical Associations issued recommendations to reduce cell phone and wireless exposures to children. The American Academy of Pediatrics has also repeatedly called on the United States government to strengthen wireless exposure regulations to protect children and pregnant women.

The Council heard testimony from health organizations and from parents who reside in multiple counties in the State of Maryland, including Montgomery County, Prince Georges County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County and Howard County. The Council also received hundreds of pages of expert scientific material and comments prior to the final Report, which the Council has posted on their website.

"Parents have a right to know if there is an environmental hazard in the classroom and actions that can be taken to reduce exposure. The stakes are so high for our children, yet we are way behind what has been happening around the world. Over 20 countries have taken steps and in some cases passed legislation to protect their youngest and most vulnerable citizens and it is time we do the same for ours," stated Montgomery County parent Laura Simon, pointing to countries like France, Cyprus and Israel.

"I was shocked to learn no government health agency had reviewed the issue from a health and safety standpoint considering how fast WiFi was being installed in schools across the State." Scarato described the process of how she brought the health issue of children's exposures to wireless in schools to Maryland State agencies almost three years ago, by first writing letters of concern about the school radiation exposures.

Dr. Sharfstein, then Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health, initially responded to Scarato's concern by stating, "It is fair to say there are legitimate questions about the long-term health implications of microwave radiation" and that the Department of Health "would be interested in the advice and counsel of groups such as the Children's Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council."

Scarato pointed out that the Education Department representative on the Council voted in favor of the CEHPAC recommendations to reduce wireless exposures. The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) also had responded to Scarato's initial concerns by referring her to CEHPAC, which "exists for the purpose of identifying environmental hazards that may affect children's health and recommending solutions to those hazards."

Medical researchers are pointing to an array of psychological, emotional and physiological health issues screens pose to children at the same time that schools are integrating wireless networks and one to one device initiatives into classrooms.

In 2017, Maryland lawmakers heard testimony on Bill HB866, a first in the nation bill to create uniform screen safety guidelines for screen use in public schools "to protect children from the documented health hazards posed by daily use of digital devices." In response to wireless radiation health concerns, many schools worldwide are replacing wireless systems with wired systems, and limiting time children spend on screens.

Experts call for strong policy action to protect the public and especially children who are more vulnerable.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/22/2017 -- Scientists from 10 nations evaluated the latest peer reviewed body of evidence linking adverse health effects to wireless radiation at an expert forum that was held in late January at Hebrew University. The scientists call for policy actions to reduce exposure were recommended, such as legislation that significantly and more protectively reduces human exposure to RF, minimization of wireless in schools and public places, and national campaigns about screen time and children's health.

The event was organized in cooperation with the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and Environmental Health Trust (EHT). Findings included the large $25 million study by the US National Toxicology Program, and other investigations confirming cancer-promoting effects, along with substantially increased cancer risks to regular long-term cell phone users, and important new studies indicating potential human health risks of 5G communication systems, wireless in schools, and the physical and psychological effects of screen time

According to Dr. Anthony Miller— long-term advisor at the World Health Organization's IARC, and advisor to Environmental Health Trust detailed the current epidemiological research on long-term cell phone users stated that his overall conclusions are that in terms of the 2011 IARC classification, today, radiofrequency fields should be considered probable causes of human cancer. Evidence of Increased Malignancies and DNA Damage

Dr. Linda Birnbaum, Director of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, prepared a presentation shared by Dr. Ron Melnick on the National Toxicology Program (NTP) study's research findings on rats exposed to wireless radiation at levels mimicking long- term cell phone exposures. Findings include: increased highly malignant cancers of the brain; increased highly malignant cancer of the heart nerve sheath; and DNA damage in the brain. In addition to increased malignancies and DNA damage, lower litter weights were found in the wireless exposed rats of the NTP study.

At conference the Dr. Fiorella Belpoggi of the Italian Ramazzini Institute released new partial findings of their cell phone radiation studies, which found, like the NTP study, lower birth weight in rats prenatally exposed to cell phone radiation. The Ramazzini study radiation exposures were orders of magnitude lower density of Radiofrequency (RF) fields than the NTP study exposures and were set to mimic cell tower radiation exposure levels.

The meeting was co-chaired by Devra Davis, PhD, MPH, visiting Professor of Medicine of The Hebrew University, who provided an update on research findings that link wireless radiation to brain, liver and skin damage in prenatally exposed animals, and Professor Emeritus of Medicine, physician-researcher Charles Greenblatt, an acclaimed basic researcher and discoverer of ancient DNA.

New study finds women carry smartphones in bra despite manufacturer’s radiation warnings.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/22/2017 -- A new Australian study that will inform cancer research has found that 25 per cent of women have carried their smartphone tucked into their bra, with 15 per cent having done so in the last week. This is despite phone manufacturers warning customers not to store smartphones against the body or in clothing.

Dr. Mary Redmayne, an adjunct research fellow with Monash University's School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Trust scientific advisor, said people were exposed to considerably higher levels of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation by storing their smartphones next to their skin, compared to in a bag or on a desk.

"Many studies have indicated an increased risk of brain tumours from extended mobile phone use. However, there have been no epidemiological studies regarding smartphone exposure and breast cancer. People should play it safe and ensure they do not store their smartphones directly against their bodies," Dr. Redmayne said.

"Modern smartphones are equipped with installed applications that run automatically in the background to update information. This process generates electromagnetic radiation in addition to the regular signal contact with the nearest base station.

"The main outcome of this pilot study will be to assist in designing a cancer or tumour study, with a principal interest in breast cancer in women due to the observed habit of carrying a phone in the bra, directly against the breast," Dr. Redmayne said.

The study surveyed 197 Melbourne-based women aged 15 to 40 to find out where and how near to the body smartphones were carried and used. The research indicated that the most common location of the smartphone in the last 7 days when not in use or during passive use (using the phone for purposes other than phone calls) was off the body (86 per cent). However, the next most common were in the hand (58 per cent), in a pocket below the waist (57 per cent) or against the breast (15 per cent). A quarter of the women surveyed had at some time carried the phone against their breast.

Only 5 per cent of survey participants were unaware that smartphones emit electromagnetic energy – the group 21 to 30 years old were best informed on this. When asked about health risks, the respondents were most concerned with sleep issues, cancer and headaches or dizziness. However, these sentiments did not seem to mitigate day-time storage behaviour, particularly in a pocket or near the breast.

"Interestingly, there was a significant association between perceived health risks and smartphone storage mode adopted at night. This was due to those who had health concerns about the phone's proximity and these women turned it off or put it into flight mode at night.

"With 89 per cent of 18 to 75-year-olds owning a smartphone in Australia, knowledge on storage habits is important for assisting future health studies. Data from this pilot study can now be used to inform larger research projects on breast cancer or other cancers and smartphone use in women," Dr. Redmayne said.
