According to Microsoft Security Intelligence Report 17, non domain computers running Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 with updated real-time security software reported a 0.6 percent infection rate, whereas systems with expired protections reported a 2.2 percent infection rate, and systems with no protections reported a 2.3 percent infection rate.

Roughly 10 percent of non-domain Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 computers are running expired security software. Customers are encouraged to upgrade to an newer version due to factors such as compliance, lack of independent software vendor support and hardware manufacturer support.

Newport, Wales -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/01/2014 -- The National Health Service (NHS) has encountered close to 2,500 breaches of confidentiality each year.

An investigation by a privacy campaign group discovered cases of private data being stolen, accidentally sent by post or fax, as well as inappropriate posting on social media.

In total, there were 7,255 recorded incidents between April 2011 and April 2014. The organisation said the mistakes were "unacceptable".

The privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch asked NHS trusts for any breaches of personal data.

It found:

- 50 cases of data being posted on social media
- 103 cases of data being lost or stolen
- 251 cases of data being inappropriately shared with a third party
- 236 cases of data being shared by email, letter or fax

As a result, there were 61 resignations according to the data supplied by the NHS Trusts.

In July 2013, it emerged that NHS Surrey was fined £200,000 by data regulators over the loss of sensitive information of more than 3,000 patients. Thousands of children's patient records were found on a second-hand NHS computer that was auctioned on eBay.

Regulators said NHS Surrey failed to check that a data destruction company had properly disposed of the records. Three further computers that had been sold on eBay contained sensitive data.

"NHS Surrey chose to leave an approved provider and handed over thousands of patients' details to a company without checking that the information had been securely deleted," ICO head of enforcement Stephen Eckersley said in a statement.

Newport, Wales -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/09/2014 -- Smartphone and tablet owners have been warned that performing a factory reset is not enough to permanently remove data from Android devices. Investigations into Android's software have found that it is possible to retrieve potentially sensitive information that was previously thought to have been wiped.

This hardware flaw has left users of Tesco's Hudl tablet particularly vulnerable. There is a known bug the Rockchip processor which allows sensitive information including bank details, pin codes, Wi-Fi keys, and browser cookies to be extracted. Pen Test Partners Ken Munro performed the investigations on ten (10) tablets he bought second-hand on eBay. Munro was able to retrieve data that had been supposedly deleted during factory resets. He explained that a 'factory reset' often only deletes the index of files present in the device's memory. Munro recovered the data using software that was available online for free.?This issue is not exclusive to Android users. Computer forensics expert Jonathan Zdziarski has completed research that found deleted information on Apple products is also vulnerable to data recovery. Zdziarski's work has since been independently verified by the security firm Stroz Friedberg.

A spokesman for Tesco stated: 'Customers should always ensure all personal information is removed prior to giving away or selling any mobile device. To guarantee this, customers should use a data wipe program.'

The Florida Information Protection Act of 2014 essentially repeals Florida's existing data breach notification law and replaces it with one of the nation's most extensive laws relating to data security and notification.

The following include an insight to the main changes that have been made:

- Expanded definition of personal information – "Personal Information" now includes a user name or email in combination with a password or security question and answer that would permit access to an online account.

- Notice of a data breach must be provided within a 30 day time frame.

- If a data breach affects more than 500 Florida residents notice of this must be provided to the Attorney General notice

- Notice to Florida Attorney general required, including when no risk of harm

- Requires production of forensic reports and other documentation to Attorney General

The changes have been made to the act due to the excessive increase of data breaches and in hope that the new amendments will slow the flood of these data breaches.

Advocates said "Faster reporting times, an expanded collection of relevant data, and increased law enforcement involvement will encourage organisations to be more proactive and give law enforcement more opportunities to catch cybercriminals".

Port Talbot, Wales -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/05/2014 -- Germany's Federal Office for Information Security declared on Tuesday 21st January that online accounts of 16 million Internet users have been accessed by hackers.

The firm was made aware of the theft as part of an analysis by research institutions and law enforcement agencies into botnets, or networks of compromised computers that hackers use to carry out attacks.

Port Talbot, Wales -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/29/2014 -- Over recent months there have been numerous high profile data breach's, from governments spying on members of society to retail chains getting hacked. In addition to this an employee from personal credit rating firm Korea Credit Bureau (KCB) is said to have exposed personal details of over 20 million South Koreans in a country where the population is of around 50 million.

The perpetrator was working as a temporary consultant at the firm and is believed to have taken the confidential information and sold it onto phone marketing companies, but has now been arrested.

Managers at the marketing companies who allegedly bought the data were arrested also, however there are fears that the information may have fallen into the hands of financial scammers.

Following the breach a string of senior executives at three credit card firms offered to resign on Monday and held their heads in shame during a public apology.

South Korean regulators told reporters on Monday that the stolen information from all three of the credit card companies was not encrypted, however after a major security firm were able to withdraw a government standard encryption algorithm back in September 2013 this highlights the issue to whether encryption is an adequate enough measure to keep personal data secure during its life and certainly questions it's sustainability through life.

This incident highlights the risks of poor asset management security policies and procedures, which happens to be the 2ndincidentin only a few years in South Korea, along with similar reports every month reported globally.

Port Talbot, Wales -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/08/2014 -- Over the past month retail chain Target have stated about 40 million credit and debit cards have been compromised by a data breach during the height of the festive shopping season.

The data breach, which is said to be one of the worst in history, started around thanksgiving on the busy black Friday weekend. The stolen data includes customer names, credit and debit card numbers, card expiration dates and the three-digit security codes located on the back of the cards. The stolen information has reportedly flooded underground black markets, going on sale in batches of one million cards.

At least 2 million shoppers who used bank debit cards at Target stores during its recent data breach are facing lower limits on how much cash they can spend at stores.

In the wake of this massive data breach the number of transactions at target fell 3 to 4 percent compared with last years final weekend before Christmas.

Craig Johnson, President of Customer Growth Partners said, " This is the worst possible time something like this could happen".

It is now believed that all Target customers affected by the data breach are to receive new cards from their banks.

Natalie Brown, a Wells Fargo spokeswoman said that if the bank believes security is at risk, "We'll take action to safeguard customers' accounts, which may include replacing the card entirely."

Austin, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/08/2013 -- South African banks have suffered losses of millions of rand due to a major breach of customer card data.

This data breach occurred from point-of-sale (POS) terminals becoming infected with malicious software called Dexter enabling cyber criminals to steal credit and debit card information of customers.

The crisis is believed to have only hit the fast- food industry in particular striking the chicken fast food chain KFC the hardest.

As a result of the breach Europol, Interpol and the South African Police Service are all involved to what is now referred to as a multinational investigation.
