Electrical Wholesalers Interviewed by the BBC on EU's 60 Watt Ban

Sparks Direct speak to BBC News about the new EU regulation to cease production of the 60 watt light bulb

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/09/2011 -- London-based electrical wholesaler Sparks Direct was recently interviewed by BBC News on the EU banning production of 60 watt light bulbs.

As of the 1st September 2011, the production of these bulbs has stopped in line with new EU regulations which aim to reduce carbon emissions produced though the use of the older, less efficient bulbs across the EU. The news means that consumers will be limited to purchasing energy saving bulbs, which have substantially increased in price as demand has risen.

Although the EU's interest is stated to be environmental, they are likely to encounter an entirely new problem. Energy saving bulbs require specialist disposal, which could potentially lead to issues with pollution in the long term.

During the interview, Sparks Direct's Nick Cohen told a BBC reporter how to best dispose of energy saving light bulbs, informing the public that these new light bulbs cannot be disposed of as standard household waste, as they contain mercury.

It now seems feasible that the government will have to introduce plans to prevent this and encourage customers to dispose of or recycle their energy efficient light bulbs in the correct manner.

The news footage also uncovered that some consumers are unhappy with the change. Many believe the new bulbs are not bright enough and that the rule prevents them from choosing the type of lighting they use.

Recently, Sparks Direct was featured in both the Daily Mail and the Telegraph whilst discussing the same issue. Sparks Direct enlightened readers on how the raw cost of energy saving light bulbs has increased in the last few months, with the article stating "One major wholesaler, Sparks in north London, said the price charged by its supplier for an 11-watt CFL had risen from £1.39 in June to £1.67 today, an increase of 20 per cent."

Now that production of 60 watt light bulbs has stopped, these prices are expected to stay and could even rise further in the future months.

Stefan Misaras from Sparks Direct stated that he can understand the consumer's frustrations at the new regulation, but also feels people should accept the fact that production has ceased and embrace the benefits of energy saving light bulbs. "Obviously customers feel like they should have a freedom of choice when it comes to all products they purchase including light bulbs, but unfortunately this law has now come in to place and consumers should try and focus on the positives, as they save you more money than a standard 60-watt light bulb and they have a longer life span, helping you reduce your electricity bill".

Sparks Shed Some Light on the Rising Cost of Energy Efficient Light Bulbs

London based electrical wholesaler help a Telegraph report into the rising cost of Light bulbs.

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/23/2011 -- Sparks Direct, a London based electrical and lighting wholesaler, has this week been featured in a Telegraph news article on how energy saving light bulbs are leaping in price. The article comes after the announcement that all standard 60-watt light bulbs will cease production from the 1st of September 2011, as part of the UK government plan to cut carbon emissions.

It now seems the energy saving alternative to these light bulbs are starting to shoot up in price as demand for them looks likely to rise after the ban on 60-watt light bulbs comes into effect.

In the article, Sparks Direct enlightens the reader on how the raw cost of energy saving light bulbs have increased in the last few months, with the article stating "One major wholesaler, Sparks in north London, said the price charged by its supplier for an 11-watt CFL had risen from £1.39 in June to £1.67 today, an increase of 20 per cent." This sharp rise coincidently comes at a time when the standard fitted 60-watt light bulb is coming out of production.

The price of these energy saving bulbs are expected to increase further in the coming months, which follows a previous trend from September 2009 when 100-watt light bulbs came out of production. It is claimed that the last batch of orders for these light bulbs incurred a 30 per cent higher cost than the previous ones as manufacturers looked to make as much money as possible from the units before they went out of production, and we should expect to see the same for the 60 watt light bulb.

Sparks Direct webmaster, Stefan Misaras, had his say on the increasing price of energy saving light bulbs, stating "Unfortunately for the consumer, this is the market we operate in. Naturally, when the standard 60-watt light bulb ceases production, there will be higher demand for the energy saving alternatives."

Despite the disgruntled reaction to the news from many consumers, Mr Misaras was quick to state that customers are still getting real value for money "Energy saving light bulbs have risen in price, but they still save you more money than a standard 60-watt light bulb as they have a longer life span and help to reduce your electricity bill".

Sparks Direct Switches & Sockets Search Wizard Proves a Great Success

Sparks Electrical Wholesalers are situated in the heart of London and have four floors of storage space which consists of lighting and electrical goods. The showroom store (“Sparks and Lights”) has hundreds of lights on display and many skilled sales staff to assist with enquiries. Sparks Direct are distributors for many manufacturers ranging from decorative lighting to electrical cable.

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/05/2010 -- Sparks Direct have one of the largest selections of switches and sockets on the Internet; and their customers range from industry professionals such as architects, interior designers, developers, builders and electricians as well as homeowners looking to spice up their homes.

Sparks Direct work hard to continually improve the usability and functionality of their website and the creation of a unique wizard for their switches and sockets further emphasised their commitment to ensuring that their customers have the best possible shopping experience when using the Sparks Direct service.

The user-friendly wizard allows people to select from a variety of different styles and colours before allowing them to narrow down their choice further by selecting the type of product (socket, switch, spur), brand and colour of insert, where applicable.

Once the person has chosen their preferences and clicked the search button, the Sparks Direct website will swiftly sort through their database of products and will only display results that are relevant according to the customer's search.

One of the best features of the interactive wizard is the use of images to help the user along the process. For example, each option for the style of socket or switch has an image so the user can instantly see whether that is the style they would like to be displayed.

In the month after its launch, the wizard generated just under 11% of the website's total revenue. This was generated from just 1% of the website's total traffic (i.e. users of the wizard)!
