Richmond, British Columbia -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/18/2013 -- Participants of an upcoming webinar will learn how Kosher and HACCP food safety come together with Kosher Check and Icicle. Rabbi Feigelstock, Director of Kashrus & Operations at Kosher Check and Steven Burton, creator of the Icicle Food Safety Platform will co-present a webinar titled, "Trust Kosher Backed by the Science of Food Safety: Kosher Check and Powered by Icicle."
Kosher foods are embraced by a diverse community world-wide. Studies have shown part of that broad appeal is due to the fact that a large segment of Jewish and non-Jewish consumers alike, buy Kosher certified foods based on their belief that they are manufactured to superior standards of food-safety.

Today Kosher certified products are one of the fastest growing segments of the food industry, with annual sales exceeding $200 billion in North America. This hard-won public confidence has inspired a prominent Rabbi in Vancouver, Canada, to launch an innovative Kosher food certification program named 'Kosher Check.' This new Kosher standard will incorporate, for the first time in history, enhanced food-safety protocol as a principal requirement. According to Rabbi Feigelstock, Kosher Check has been designed specifically to inform consumers that the products it certifies not only meet strict Kosher standards, but also, that the manufacturers of such foods have warranted that their operational activities conform to enhanced food-safety protocols.

Among the food-safety programs considered benchmarks for Kosher Check are those regarded 'best-practice' by quality assurance authorities and food professionals, world-wide. They include the HACCP program (Hazard Awareness Critical Control Points) as well as GFSI (Global Food Standard Initiative), FSSC 22000 (Foundation for Food Safety Certification) and BRC (British Retail Council), among others.

Kosher Check is powered by Icicle to manage all their Kosher products, ingredients, and processes. Using the same interfaces, they can opt-in to manage their HACCP-compliant food safety programs as well, saving time and effort when managing both types of certification.

According to Steve Burton, developer of Icicle, "It is with great pleasure that Burton Software, makers of Icicle, entered into a strategic partnership which unites Icicle's technology with Kosher food safety under a single umbrella that's easy to manage. Similar strategic partnerships with Halal, gluten-free, and allergen-free, food manufacturers will be announced shortly."

BCIT Alum Steve Burton Featured in Food Engineering Magazine

Richmond, British Columbia -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/13/2013 -- The current issue of School of the British Columbia Institute of Technology Alumni December Newsletter featured Computing and Academic Studies alumnus, Steve Burton. The Computer Systems Foundations graduate and CEO of Burton Software Inc., was also profiled in the current issue of Food Engineering magazine about his quality assurance program, Icicle a HACCP Food Safety and Inspection Software.

The affordable HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) software is making compliance easier for small and medium-sized processors. Icicle, the flagship technology of Burton Software, is the HACCP solution that improves the quality and safety of products by developing tools that manage food safety plans, document procedures, and carry out inspections.

Designed on the CODEX-based principles of risk assessment and the identification of controls for all hazards, Icicle software automatically generates all the forms required to meet a CODEX-based HACCP system, according to Steve Burton, CEO of Burton Software Inc. With the software, processors work with the elements with which they are familiar, such as products, ingredients, formulae, processes, and more; a wizard helps them complete hazard analyses and address the issue of risk. The system then generates a set of twelve functional forms, including the HACCP plan and a change log.

"The vision of Burton Software is to make enterprise-grade technology, normally available to large companies with in-house IT staffs, server rooms and heavy-duty database systems, affordable to all food manufacturers—even very small food producers—since users only need a browser and an Internet connection," said Burton.
According to Kosher Today, "The kosher food industry is in transition, certainly when one considers the changing demographics nationwide. That was the consensus of many experts at a major seminar at the recently held Kosherfest (October 29-30, 2013). They agreed that many markets are experiencing decline as older kosher consumers pass from the scene and are not necessarily replaced by younger consumers who may have intermarried and do not frequent the kosher aisle, even on Passover."

Powered by Icicle and Kosher Check Blends Traditional Kosher and Science-based Food Safety as Reported in FastCasual.com

Richmond, BC -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/10/2013 -- Fast Casual.com, insights for innovative restaurants, reported that apart from their appeal to Jewish consumers, Kosher foods are embraced by a diverse community world-wide.

According to Rabbi Avraham Feigelstock, Kosher Check has been designed specifically to inform consumers that the products it certifies not only meet strict Kosher standards, but also, that the manufacturers of such foods have warranted that their operational activities conform to enhanced food-safety protocols.

The Rabbi said the existing Kosher certification program, BC Kosher, has been using client contracts for many years that require commitments by Kosher certified manufacturers that they comply with all applicable government food-safety regulations. "Under Kosher Check," he said, "Approval will be predicated on food manufacturers giving clear assurances they are operating to additional, elevated standards for food-safety - over and above those food regulations mandated by government authorities."

"Certainly, Kosher Check is intended to be value-added for consumers," said Rabbi Feigelstock, "Since it will provide them extra assurance concerning food-safety," He said benefits will accrue to others, "Like product brand owners and grocery retailers, since both can expect to profit from incremental sales as Kosher Check achieves greater awareness among consumers."

Kosher Check is powered by Icicle to manage all their Kosher products, ingredients, and processes. Using the same interfaces, they can opt-in to manage their HACCP-compliant food safety programs as well, saving time and effort when managing both types of certification.

PizzaMarketPlace.com Reports Powered by Icicle Kosher Check Integrates Traditional Kosher and Science-Based Food Safety

PizzaMarketPlace.com Reports Powered by Icicle Kosher Check Integrates Traditional Kosher and Science-based Food Safety

Richmond, British Columbia -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/09/2013 -- PizzaMarketPlace.com, provides food industry and restaurant insights. Last week, in a continuing discussion of food safety, they reported that apart from their appeal to Jewish consumers, Kosher foods are embraced by a diverse community world-wide.

Burton Software Icicle Profiled in Canadian Jewish News to Achieve Kosher Certification

Burton Software Icicle Profiled in Canadian Jewish News to Achieve Kosher Certification

Richmond, BC -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/09/2013 -- The current issue of Canadian Jewish News featured Burton Software, (http://www.burtonsoftware.com) the maker of Icicle, the affordable cloud-based solution to improve food safety. Lauren Kramer, Pacific Correspondent for Canadian Jewish News reported that the Vancouver-based agency, Kosher Check is expanding its requirements for kosher certification to include food safety standards beyond the minimum regulations laid out by Canada's Food Inspection Agency.

Kosher Check certifies some 14,000 products, with 2,000 of them manufactured and certified in Asia. Obtaining the extra level of food safety certification is not necessarily all that complicated for food manufacturers, thanks to Icicle, cloud-based software created by Burton Software in Richmond, B.C. Companies pay to subscribe to the software, enter their ingredient lists and are given data on what they have to do to achieve kosher certification and HACCP certification. The software saves a massive amount of time in the documentation required to obtain HACCP.

According to Steve Burton, "It is with great pleasure that Burton Software, makers of Icicle, entered into a strategic partnership which unites Icicle's technology with Kosher food safety under a single umbrella that's easy to manage. " (http://www.burtonsoftware.com/Partner/KosherCheck)

Kosher Check is insisting that present and future clients adhere to advanced food safety protocols such as Canada's Hazard Awareness Critical Control Points (HACCP), British Retail Consortium standards (BRC), Safe Quality Foods (SQF), the Foundation for Food Safety Certification (FSSC), among others. "We feel customers have a right to know that their food is safe," says Rabbi Avraham Feigelstock, who sits on the Vancouver Rabbinical Court. What's more, the market is demanding additional levels of food safety inspection, he adds, with Europe being way ahead of North America.

The Canadian Jewish News (CJN) is Canada's largest weekly Jewish newspaper. It is an independent, award-winning community newspaper that prides itself on being a forum for diverse points of view on subjects of interest and relevance to the Jewish community. With an audited circulation of around 40,000, The CJN is read by more than 100,000 people each week.
They include the HACCP program (Hazard Awareness Critical Control Points) as well as GFSI (Global Food Standard Initiative), FSSC 22000 (Foundation for Food Safety Certification) and BRC (British Retail Council), among others.

Icicle HACCP Solution Recommended by Canadian Food Safety Consultant Gerry Gerbasi

Icicle HACCP Solution Recommended by Canadian Food Safety Consultant Gerry Gerbasi

Richmond, British Columbia -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/25/2013 -- Gerry Gerbasi, a highly respected food safety consultant with GJG Associates Food Safety, located in Canada recently commented on the value Icicle HACCP Food Safety program gives to food manufacturers and processors. Gerbasi suggested that Icicle is a complete solution to develop and document a HACCP system with continuous support of the software. The built-in risk assessment, hazard analysis, change log, and other features are required today in third-party audits.

"Icicle is a total package with built-in prompts. One of the most important issues is that changes and additions are easily made and are reflected immediately in output documents without having to change much by hand. This software is based on hazard analysis and risk assessment. It can also be used in identifying and controlling quality parameters," noted Gerbasi.

Gerbasi was the former Manager of Quality Assurance and Technical Service responsible for food safety at the Lucerne Foods Division of Safeway. He acknowledged the need for a quality program that assists the implementation of HACCP plans and procedures and the Icicle HACCP cloud-based solution. Icicle is preferred for many food manufacturers as a food quality HACCP solution. Other solutions are more expensive and limited to the machines on which software was installed. The Icicle cloud-based structure allows food manufacturers to access data from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

Icicle Anticipates Kosher Foods Increase as Health Conscious Consumers See Benefits

Icicle Anticipates Kosher Foods Increase as Health Conscious Consumers See Benefits

Richmond, British Columbia -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/21/2013 -- The IFT (Institute of Food Technologists) reported that kosher food purchases are made by approximately 80 percent who are not observing Jewish dietary laws. According to the publication, "kosher foods are becoming more popular. Kosher food sales jumped 64 percent between 2003 and 2012, to a record $12.5 billion."
Other solutions are more expensive and limited to the machines on which software was installed. The Icicle cloud-based structure allows food manufacturers to access data from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

Icicle has been widely adopted by many sectors of food manufacturing and processing, most recently the kosher food market which is expanding rapidly. It is part of the "health and natural food" trend with more than 20% annual growth. Food manufacturers are taking full advantage of this extremely lucrative market. Consumers are intentionally buying kosher products amounting to over two hundred million dollars in annual purchases, in a market with substantial sales turnover. The multi-cultural and multi-ethnic society reflects only a small part of these consumers are Jewish. Many religions and groups represent the majority of consumers purchasing kosher food. Allergy sufferers, as well as those in search of a guarantee of certified quality, are part of the fast-growing groups of kosher-food consumers.

Until Icicle, food safety was not axiomatic with kosher certification, though the rigorous, reliable, and continual inspections kosher-certified products frequently strengthen consumers' perception of value and quality. Icicle is the technology solution which now allows certified kosher foods to authenticate food safety.

More than three thousand Icicle users are projected by 2014; ten thousand additional global users in India and Europe are anticipated as well-respected strategic alliances are announced with leading food manufacturers.

Food Safety Expert Gerbasi Identifies Limitations in HACCP Programs with Icicle as Exception

Food Safety Expert Gerbasi Identifies Limitations in HACCP Programs with Icicle as Exception

Richmond, British Columbia -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/14/2013 -- Gerry Gerbasi is a highly respected food safety consultant with GJG Associates Food Safety, located in Vancouver, BC. He was the former Manager of Quality Assurance and Technical Service responsible for food safety at the Lucerne Foods Division of Safeway.
Gerbasi recently commented on the limitations of HACCP documenting systems, "The biggest limitation to most software is it does not prompt the writer from step to step. Other software and methods of documenting HACCP systems do not offer a total package. They leave the developer in a position where much of the form development and prompting must come from the author and therefore the quality of the written documentation easily reflects the lack of understanding of the HACCP coordinator. Therefore, each plant develops its own program; rarely is there any semblance of continuity."

Burton Software HACCP Food Safety Solution Icicle Featured in Food Engineering Magazine

Richmond, BC -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/14/2013 -- Burton Software was profiled in the current issue of Food Engineering magazine. Wayne Labs reported favorably regarding the affordability of the HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) software making FSMA compliance easier for small and medium-sized processors.

Icicle Helps to Validate Food Safety Health Benefit of Kosher Food

Icicle Helps to Validate Food Safety Health Benefit of Kosher Food

Richmond, BC -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/12/2013 -- Kosher food restrictions were created for religious reasons, not to produce healthier or safer food. According to a New York Times article, "Although some of the kosher laws related to ingredients and preparation may have potential health advantages, there's no evidence to show that kosher food products are healthier or safer than those from traditional food companies."

Icicle is preferred for many food manufacturers as a food quality HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) solution.

Food Safety Consultant Gerbasi Talks Value of HACCP Solution Icicle

Food Safety Consultant Gerbasi Talks Value of HACCP Solution Icicle

Richmond, British Columbia -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/08/2013 -- Gerry Gerbasi is a highly respected food safety consultant with GJG Associates Food Safety, located in Vancouver, BC. Gerbasi recently commented, "Most company's HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) coordinators have used various software solutions such as Microsoft Word and Excel to develop the written program. In reality this type of software is a bad choice but there have been very few programs developed which can truly assist the program developer in writing and implementing HACCP plans and procedures."

Burton noted, "Food companies now have the ability to fully synchronize operations across facilities and across the globe. The emergence of a new hazard or a change to any aspect of an existing hazard is immediately understood. Automatic alerts initiate recalls and modifications to existing formulas. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) are available to employees regardless of physical location. Documentation validates food safety procedures can be printed on-demand to satisfy the requirements of auditors regardless of which specific certification authority certifies the company's products."
"We want the slaughter to happen in the most complete conditions of hygiene and cleanliness," The minister said he would announce a plan for new regulations sometime this fall. A spokeswoman for the minister confirmed to CJAD that he still intended to release a plan, though she could not specify when.

Steve Burton, founder of Icicle HACCP Food Safety software, responded, "The proposed regulations ignore the central tenant of both Kosher and Halal practices that dictate that the slaughtering practice be as quick and humane as possible. Methods in use today by the non-Kosher meat industry, such as the use of the captive bolt pistol that is designed to only stun the animal so its heart continues to beat during the bleeding process, are strictly forbidden by both Kosher and Halal. According to our current understand of food safety science, there is no fact-based evidence that Halal or Kosher slaughter practices result in a greater risk of contamination by pathogens, toxins, or harmful objects."

Hayters Turkey Products HACCP Coordinator Discusses Documentation Management Solution

Richmond, BC -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/31/2013 -- Icicle is preferred for many small and medium sized food manufacturers as a food quality HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) solution. Other software solutions are more expensive and limited to the machines that the software on which was installed. The Icicle cloud-based structure allows food manufacturers to access data from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

Dave Maguire, HACCP Coordinator at Hayter's Turkey Products commented, "Using Icicle software as my HACCP portal allows me the ability to store all documentation in a centralized location, but still allows the flexibility for any supervisor to bring up the HACCP Plan in front of them. This is useful for finding proper corrective action procedures, handling audits, and allowing the information to be at anyone's finger tips instantly, versus having to get the appropriate HACCP binder from the plant office. When changes are made, the program creates the appropriate HACCP maintenance log reports, and the changes are applied instantly. This reduces the need to print a new document, find the old document in the HACCP binders and replace the document with the most current version."

Documentation management is the greatest challenge depending on the size and complexity of HACCP plans. Change is constant in the food manufacturing business. New products are developed, specialized machinery becomes available, and new allergens are identified. When changes occur within the HACCP system, documentation must reflect the operational changes in the facility.
