Dr. William Brown Performs Successful Sports Hernia Surgery on Sacramento Republic FC Midfielder, Adam Moffat

Fremont, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/27/2017 -- Renowned sports hernia specialist, Dr. William (Bill) Brown, performed surgery in mid-June on Sacramento Republic FC midfielder, Adam Moffat, to repair a sports hernia. Moffat's injury occurred earlier in the season, and he is expected to be available for play after an eight- to ten-week recovery period.

This past season, Moffat played 383 minutes in his six appearances with four starts for the soccer team. He played for the New York Cosmos before joining Sacramento Republic FC in the 2015 season, where he's played since.

"It has been a pleasure to work with the Sacramento Republic Soccer team over the years, and I am honored that the team allows me to care for their players. The coach and management always want the best care for their athletes and support my decisions. John Duncan is the head trainer for the team. He always does a great job with the post-operative rehab, making my job that much easier. I wish Adam Moffat a fast recovery," says Dr. Brown, MD.

Boston Marathon Runners Attribute Dr. William Brown, Sports Hernia Specialist, with Getting Them Back in the Race

Fremont, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/17/2015 -- Two runners who competed in the 2015 Boston Marathon, one of the six World Marathon Majors, attribute their ability to compete to Dr. William Brown, a renowned sports hernia specialist and surgeon. Both competitors underwent surgery less than a year before last April's annual marathon that draws over 30,000 athletes from around the world.

The Marathon's course run 26 miles 385 yards long and is considered to be on of the most difficult among marathons, due in part to Heartbreak Hill's ascent. This hill falls between the 20 and 21-mile marks and is believed to be the point at which runners' glycogen stores in the muscles are depleted.

To run in the Boston Marathon is a dream for many runners and completing it is an accomplishment, which makes it all the more remarkable for two of Dr. Brown's sports hernia surgery patients. Sports hernias are often misdiagnosed as groin muscle strain that will subside with rest. It's only when the pain returns with activity that runners seek a correct diagnosis and treatment, which can take months depending on how long it takes to find a specialist in sports hernias.

One from Austin, TX says, "Dr. Brown performed my double sports hernia and hip adductor surgeries in October of 2014. I ran the Boston Marathon the next April in the fastest time ever for me. Dr. Brown is a miracle worker."

Likewise, another runner who underwent sports hernia repair surgery with Dr. Brown a mere six months before the Marathon also finished.

"I examine, diagnose and repair sports hernias for runners, as much as I do for athletes in sports that are more prone to result in inguinal disruption injuries. Many runners have seen several doctors by the time they are in my office, and many have not been able to run for quite some time due to the pain and multiple misdiagnoses that delays recovery," explains Dr. Brown.

For these two Boston Marathon runners, receiving an accurate diagnosis and undergoing treatment sooner versus later was key to getting into physical therapy and achieving full recovery in time to not only run the Marathon, but for one to do in his best time to date.

Dr. William Brown, Bay Area, CA Sports Hernia Specialist, Publishing Sports Hernia Newsletter

Dr. William Brown is publishing a newsletter to share the latest and most accurate information regarding sports hernias with SH News subscribers.

Fremont, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/15/2015 -- Dr. William Brown recently began publishing an e-newsletter, SH News. The newsletter contains the most accurate and current information on sports hernias and their treatment. SH News is geared to both medical and athletic audiences. Those interested in subscribing can sign up to receive SH News on Dr. Brown's website, SportsHernia.com

The e-newsletter is only newsletter published that is focused singularly on sports hernia-related information. SH News subscribers receive periodic issues that contain relevant information about prevention, diagnosis, treatment options like open repair surgery, post-operative care, and rehabilitation and recovery programs.

"By the time a patient makes an appointment with me, it's not uncommon that he or she has seen four or five other doctors. Sports hernias are often misdiagnosed as groin muscle strain and patients are advised to rest. Rest can cause the pain to subside, but pain returns once activity is resumed. It's a very frustrating situation for athletes at both the professional and amateur levels," explains Dr. Brown.

Though SH News is a new publication, it is well received and growing in popularity. The last issue published resulted in over 5% of the subscribers contacting Dr. Brown with questions regarding sports hernia symptoms and scheduling appointments. Less than than 0.5% requested to be unsubscribed, indicating demand for better information on sports hernias.

"Given the amount of misinformation available on sports hernias, I wanted a way to keep patients and athletes better informed," says Dr. Brown. "Sports hernias can be diagnosed and repaired for a full recovery. The key in doing so is for the patient to receive an accurate diagnosis and undergo treatment sooner versus later."

"It is difficult enough for those suffering from a sports hernia to find truthful and helpful information when it comes to diagnosing and treating sports hernias. It's quite common for patients to see several doctors and try many types of treatments before receiving an accurate diagnosis, surgical repair and treatment plan. Also, many of my patients are athletes, who are an active group in general. It makes sense that they're using mobile devices to seek information. The responsive design will make this critical information much easier to find and navigate," explains Dr. Brown.

Dr. William Brown, California-Based Sports Hernia Surgeon, Releases Educational Video on Surgical Injury Repair

Dr. Brown discusses the complicated nature of sports hernias and the importance of consulting a surgeon experienced in surgically repairing this type of athletic injury in his latest educational video posted on YouTube.

Fremont, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/11/2015 -- Dr. William Brown, renowned sports hernia (also called inguinal disruption) specialist, has released a new educational video on YouTube. With the injury widely misdiagnosed and incorrectly or under-treated, the sports hernia video offers his expert insight to athletes who are seeking accurate information about the debilitating injury and best practices in sports hernia repair surgery.

Dr. Brown performs approximately 200 inguinal disruption surgical repairs every year. Dr. Brown explains, "There are a small number of surgeons in the U.S. with a long history of performing this type of surgery. Yet, like all types of surgeries, getting a good outcome depends on the surgeon's skill and experience in a particular surgical field. Especially, with repairing a sports hernia, I cannot stress how critical it is to consult with a surgeon who has performed numerous, successful sports hernia repairs."

The video reviews the complicated nature of the injury, involving blood vessels, nerves, ligaments and even bones. Given the difficulty to achieve a successful repair, many surgeons will choose mesh repair, which can lead to shear stresses and nerve damage. Dr. Brown prefers and performs open repair procedures because it allows him to fully evaluate and repair muscle damage for better post-surgery results.

Though sports hernias can occur in non-athletes, athletes who quickly twist, kick and turn are the most affected group. An estimated 80% of the athletes Dr. Brown performs surgical repair on travel to his office from out of state because of his reputation for being one of the top sports hernia repair experts in the U.S.

YouTube video viewers are encouraged to post comments and questions; many of which Dr. Brown replies to personally.

Increasing Number of Professional Athletes Undergoing Sports Hernia Repair Surgery

Renowned sports hernia surgeon, Dr. William Brown, reports a 40% increase this year in professional athletes undergoing surgery to repair inguinal disruptions.

Fremont, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/23/2014 -- Sports hernia repair specialist, Dr. William Brown, performed 112 sports hernia repair surgeries on professional athletes during the first six months of 2014. This number represents a 40 percent increase from the previous year. Of the 112 patients, nine of them are professional athletes playing in the National Football League, National Baseball Association and Major League Soccer.

Dr. Brown credits the increase to the wider availability of accurate information about inguinal disruptions on the Internet and among the athletic community as a whole. He states, "Professional athletes tend to be very attuned to their bodies. When the pain associated with a sports hernia doesn't subside and ultimately affects their performance, they actively seek answers and relief. Until recently, finding those answers to get back their peak was far more difficult," states Dr. Brown.

Sports hernias are difficult to diagnose due to way symptoms present. Many physicians, unfamiliar with inguinal disruptions, misdiagnose the condition and prescribe rest and physical therapy, neither of which provide a full recovery. Combined, these can lead to increased time off of training and the playing field, as well as frustration on the athlete's part.

A thorough examination by an experienced sports hernia specialist is essential to determine whether or not sports hernia surgery repair is the best course of action. However, athletes are making strides toward seeking appropriate medical care more quickly than ever due in part to easier access to information. Athletes' forums on the Web, blogs from successful surgery patients and renowned surgeons like Dr. Brown, as well as word of mouth is making it easier for athletes today to repair sports hernia injuries and return to their sports with full recoveries.

Renowned Sports Hernia Surgeon, Dr. William Brown, Reporting Excellent Results Following Inguinal Ligament Tenotomies

A new surgical technique, combining inguinal ligament tenotomy with oblique muscle repair, is proving effective for athletes experiencing chronic groin pain.

Fremont, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/06/2014 -- Sports hernia repair specialist, Dr. William Brown, has investigated and is now performing inguinal ligament tenotomies on patients who have chronic groin pain and are candidates based on their symptoms and diagnosis. This relatively new approach is a welcome alternative to athletes who are anxious to quickly return to their pre-injury performance levels.

According to a study published in Surgical Laparoscopy Endoscopy & Percutaneous Techniques, 48 patients were identified for this surgery with chronic groin pain lasting 18 months on average. Ninety-two percent of patients surveyed and who responded post-surgery stated they returned to normal sports activity after their surgery. The median time it took to return to strenuous sports activity was 28 days, though responses ranged anywhere from 14 to 40 days.

Patients also reported that their functional limitations improved post surgery, as well as the frequency and severity of pain. Patients were encouraged to resume full activity as soon as possible post surgery, and athletes to begin training again one-week and return to regular activity two weeks after surgery. They were advised to do exercises that stretch the groin muscles, such as bent knee lunges and touching their buttocks with the heel of the foot on the side of the operation.

"Inguinal ligament tenotomies have been investigated by the Australian surgeons. Some athletes with a sports hernia have pain at the medial attachment of the inguinal ligament. The Australian surgeons perform a release procedure. They report excellent results. Recently, I have been treating some of my patients with this procedure, and the outcomes are excellent," explains Dr. Brown.

Candidates for inguinal ligament tenotomies must report chronic groin pain for eight weeks or longer, show no signs of improvement after a period of rest, limiting athletic activity or physiotherapy sessions. In the study, patients presented localized tenderness over the insertion of the inguinal ligament and superficial ring without obvious evidence of a hernia like bulge in the muscle.

Also, the groin pain had to occur when the patient was asked to sit up against resistance. Since inguinal disruptions are often difficult to diagnose, a thorough examination by an experienced sports hernia specialist is essential to determine whether or not a laparoscopic inguinal ligament tenotomy is the best course of action.

Renowned Sports Hernia Specialist, Dr. William Brown, Expects Affordable Care Act to Benefit Athletes Suffering from Inguinal Disruptions

Dr. William Brown, one of the country’s leading inguinal disruption experts, expects the Affordable Care Act to benefit athletes suffering from sports hernias by covering surgical repair, though what insurers will pay toward surgery remains to be determined.

Fremont, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/30/2014 -- Many professional and non-professional athletes suffer debilitating groin pain due to a sports hernia. These inguinal disruptions are often misdiagnosed and mistreated since they do not present with typical hernia symptoms, mainly a bulge in the muscle. Even for those athletes with comprehensive healthcare coverage, misdiagnosis and the medical community's lack of knowledge in sports hernia repair makes receiving treatment difficult.

The Affordable Care Act promises better value, better health and better choices for millions of Americans. Over seven million people signed up through the Health Insurance Marketplace during the open enrollment period. Another three million gained coverage under their parents' insurance plans or became eligible for Medicaid coverage. The Act prohibits insurers from discriminating based on a pre-existing condition, or charging women more because of their gender.

The Act offers healthcare options to athletes that they may not have had before. Olympians, for example, must invest a majority of their time training, limiting their work schedules and therefore their income. Given the choice between paying living expenses and training, something must give. And that's usually health insurance.

With sports hernia diagnosis difficult and often requiring several visits to four or five physicians before it is accurately identified, surgery and eventual recovery is delayed for the uninsured or under insured if they cannot afford the out-of-pocket expenses associated with multiple doctors and specialists visits.

"A large number of elite athletes seriously train for their sport. Yet training hours limit their workweek and earning potential without professional contracts or sponsorships for support. Sports hernias are fairly common in athletics, especially hockey, soccer, running and dance. The Affordable Care Act could provide the coverage these athletes need, if injured, to undergo sports hernia surgery. What also remains to be seen is just how much insurers will reimburse for sports hernia repair surgery," explains Dr. Brown.

While healthcare is not a concern for professional athletes afforded comprehensive coverage through their team or funded in part by corporate sponsorships, it can be a formidable barrier for elite athletes without those means. For athletes who are uninsured or under-insured, the Affordable Care Act could offer new hope.

The British Hernia Society's Manchester Consensus Conference Results in New Terminology for Sports Hernia

A consensus conference held by the British Hernia Society concludes that a sports hernia should be called inguinal disruption since no true hernia exists, and recommends taking a multidisciplinary approach to a disruption’s repair and management.

Fremont, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/24/2014 -- The British Hernia Society invited sports hernia diagnosis and management experts to contribute to a consensus conference held in October 2012. A physiotherapist, a musculoskeletal radiologist and 150 surgeons were on hand to present and share their individual experiences with sports hernias. Following the conference, the Society concluded that a sports hernia should be referred to as an inguinal disruption (ID) because no true hernia is present in this common condition afflicting athletes.

"Having diagnosed and repaired inguinal disruptions (sports hernias) in athletes for many years now, I am particularly pleased with the Society's decision to change the way we refer to this condition. Many of my patients have suffered from groin pain for far too long, having been misdiagnosed and mistreated previously since this injury often doesn't present with traditional hernia symptoms, mainly a bulge in the muscle. The society's decision to refer to sports hernias as inguinal disruptions will make a measurable impact on the way physicians diagnose and treat this injury. My hope is that it sheds light on the subject for the medical profession, and consequently leads to sooner treatment and proper care," states Dr. William Brown, who specializes in inguinal disruptions.

While the Society's Consensus Statement recognizes the need for additional research for best recommendations in managing inguinal disruptions, it does clarify and substantiate what experts like Dr. Brown have known for some time. Specifically that ID is a real injury common to athletes and can be described as severe pain in the inguinal area near the groin area. ID can present immediately without any other symptoms attributing to the injury.

The Statement also concedes that ID remains a complex subject in sports medicine given the differing opinions on correct diagnosis and treatment. However, bringing ID experts together to discuss and debate the issue at consensus meetings like this one held in Manchester, UK will make strides toward better treatment protocols and full recoveries for those athletes whose lives and athletic performance are impacted by ID.

Renowned Sports Hernia Specialist, Dr. William Brown, Sports Hernia Repair YouTube Video Growing in Popularity

With sports hernias so often misdiagnosed and mistreated, those suffering from groin pain are turning to the Web for help. In an effort to dispel myths and provide correct information, Dr. Brown published a YouTube video on sports hernia repair.

Fremont, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/11/2013 -- Dr. William Brown's informative sports hernia repair YouTube video has logged well over 14,000 views. A sports hernia is a tear in the oblique abdominal muscles and is little understood in the world of professional and collegiate athletics. The goal of the video is to share useful information with those who suffer from groin pain and seek information on the surgical aspects of sport hernia repair surgery.

Sports hernias are commonly misdiagnosed and mistreated. "I would estimate that by the time a patient comes to my office, he or she has seen four to five other general practitioners or sports medicine specialists. When the previously prescribed rest fails to provide relief, they seek other options and often feel defeated. It's satisfying to give athletes, both professional and otherwise, their lives back because a sports hernia can be debilitating if not treated properly," explains Dr. Brown.

Sports hernias are unlike traditional hernias. A sport hernia does not involve an abdominal wall hole or tear which bulges under the skin and is easily seen. Lack of visible evidence makes a definitive sports hernia diagnosis quite difficult.

Dr. Brown's YouTube video shows images from a sport hernia repair surgery. The surgery was performed on a hockey player in his mid-twenties who had been experiencing pain in his left groin for 18 months. Though the MRI was negative, a physical exam revealed external and internal oblique muscle tears. Three weeks of rest and three weeks of physical therapy later, the hockey player was back on the ice.

YouTube video viewers are welcome to post comments and questions; many of which Dr. Brown replies to personally.
