Official Statement: Sentient Science Settles Claim with National Science Foundation

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/01/2018 -- Sentient Science has settled with the United States Department of Energy and National Science Foundation (NSF) after four years of litigation. Sentient Science continues to deny allegations that it violated the False Claims Act, but the cost of continued litigation was becoming too great for our small business.

Ward Thomas, CEO and President of Sentient Science said, "After four years of investigation against my company, the NSF Office of Inspector General continued the investigation even though none of the allegations were determined to have violated the False Claims Act. As the investigation remained open, facing another four years of costs to continue the process was becoming too expensive. We accepted the government's offer to settle. I feel it's better to give our great country the $2,675,000 back after the huge investment the U.S. Government has given us rather than give more than that amount in lawyer fees to continue the investigation to fully clear our name of any liability. The process has empowered Sentient Science to learn the back-office repeatable processes we will need to have a successful IPO."

The U.S. Government has been a customer of Sentient Science since 2001 and has awarded more than $30 million to Sentient through the Small Business Innovative Research and Small Technology Transfer Research funding program. The Buffalo-based software as a service company continues to leverage the SBIR/STTR grant programs to enhance capabilities and work with the Departments of Defense and Energy to build materials science-based predictive modeling capabilities for rotorcraft, wind turbines and rail.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Jill Szpylman
Director of Public Relations & Investor Relations
Sentient Science
Telephone: 716-572-1549
Email: Click to Email Jill Szpylman
Web: https://sentientscience.com/

CEO of Enel X Joins Sentient Science Board of Directors

Venturini Is Global Leader on Digitalization

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/18/2018 -- Francesco Venturini Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Enel X, has been appointed to the Sentient Science Board of Directors. As the newest board member, Mr. Venturini will be an integral member of the board, bringing more than 20 years of experience in the energy and transportation sectors.

Mr. Venturini currently heads Enel's new Global Business Line, Enel X which explores how, in a period of technological disruption which is entering abruptly into the energy sector, utilities need to redefine their role, transforming themselves into tech companies to swiftly address the new needs of their customers. Enel X in particular aims to provide new solutions and services to residential, industrial and public customers.

Before heading to Enel X, Mr. Venturini was the CEO of Enel Green Power, a position that he held for 3 years making the company one of the best-positioned and more successful operator in the renewable energy sector at the worldwide level.

During his time as CEO in Enel Green Power, he also served as Board President of WindEurope from 2016-2017. As chair of the board, Mr. Venturini pushed heavily for the full and efficient integration of wind energy into electricity markets, while stressing the importance of elaborating a robust renewable energy strategy for the Union, to revamp its leadership in the decarbonisation field. Moreover, during his chairmanship, he stressed also the pivotal role battery energy storage systems can play in stabilizing grids and reducing the huge waste of renewable energy that is curtailed when grids are at capacity. Venturini worked closely with Sentient Science's CEO, Ward Thomas, to lead the board's advocacy efforts and guiding the conversation on digitalization as a strategy to significantly reduce the cost of wind energy.

"When I was on the board at WindEurope, I saw firsthand how the other CEOs in wind embraced Sentient's technology to lower their cost of energy through life extension. I was drawn to their stake in the ground to be the trusted third party to the operator," said Venturini. "Sentient's discovery that there is a 68% difference between physical test models and the failure rates that are actually occurring in the field proves the unleveled playing field between OEM and operator. I am excited to bring my expertise on how to deliver key value drivers like customer success and digitalization to Sentient and to guide and accelerate their IPO aspirations."

"Francesco will be a great addition to the board, bringing strong finance, executive and leadership experience. His proven success in leading a global business and transforming the traditional utility into a digitalization company will serve us well. He is a 'Tony Stark, Iron-man'- like innovator who values the importance of digitalization. His forward thinking will be extremely beneficial as we grow our global business in not just renewables, but in aerospace and rail, too."

In three years of commercial sales, Sentient Science captured 10% market share of the wind industry, and within its current customer base, will be live monitoring about half of the world's wind fleet by 2020.

"We know that digitalization is the path to the future. We saw firsthand the difference between physical test results and the actual impact operational and loading conditions have on the life of a field asset," said Thomas. "The industry has to move out of the stone-age, focusing on the past, and get digital. When we deliver the digital bill of materials to the operator, we build a moat around them, requiring the OEM and suppliers to validate the life and impact their offerings have on the field asset to ensure life extension and long-term sustainment of the fleet."

About Mr. Venturini
Mr. Venturini is a leader in the energy industry and has been with Enel Group since 1997, contributing to the company listing on the New York and Milan Stock Exchanges. He's served in various leadership roles within the Enel organization from Head of Internal Audit to Head of Sales Administration to Head of Finance and Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Enel Green Power. He's based in Rome, Italy today, but was born in New York. He graduated cum laude in Economics from the University La Sapienza of Rome Italy, London School of Business and holds an MBA from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Mr. Venturini completes the five-member board alongside Mr. Thomas, Simon Chong, Managing Director or Georgian Partners, Omar Masri, Partner at Toba Capital, and Brian Sperry, President of Technology Applications.
Alfonso Faubel Joins Sentient Science from Alstom GE as New Chief Revenue Officer, President of Europe

Will Lead Global Operator Network Onboarding within Materials Science-based DigitalClone Live Platform

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/26/2017 -- Alfonso Faubel has joined Sentient Science as Chief Revenue Officer of Energy & President of Europe, reporting to Chief Executive Officer Ward Thomas. His office will be based out of Spain.

Sentient Science offers a cloud-based, materials and data science platform, DigitalClone® Live, for wind operators and suppliers. The software predicts when early crack initiation begins in critical components and systems and provides a platform of supplier-based life extension actions designed to reduce the cost of wind energy by 13% of an operator's revenue. The materials science-based approach offers 10 times the value of big data solutions by offering a 5:1 return on investment, answering when and where failures will occur in a fleet.

Mr. Faubel joins Sentient Science from Alstom-General Electric where he was senior vice president, global sales & marketing power.

"When I worked for the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), I saw first-hand the need for digitalization strategies that would provide our customers, the wind operators, more precise foresight into when and where failures would occur in order to lower their cost of energy to a point where their wind business could compete against other energy sources," said Faubel, noting he was focused previously on reducing the Capital Expenditure line on the cost of Energy.

Faubel will shift focus from OEM to operator, working with the Sentient Science operator network as a trusted 3rd party.

"It was during my time at Alstom GE that I came to realize the enormous potential the wind industry still had in addressing operational (OpEx) and capital expenditure (CapEx) cost reductions, specifically through prognostics. Statistical-based data solutions lack the long-term prognostics needed to change business strategies," Faubel said. "Sentient Science's materials and data science-based software provides significantly more COE reductions for CEOs of Power Generation companies."

Operators with an aging fleet and rapidly declining power purchase agreement pricing, place increased hardships on wind operators. Offshore wind farms experience exponentially higher operations and maintenance costs, which are often located miles offshore in remote and harsh conditions.

"Sentient Science is the only trusted third-party software company that delivers an efficient technological offering for life extension of operational wind turbines based on scientific data-driven asset actions. I look forward to working with the brilliant materials scientists, Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence scientists, management team, software developers and sales and marketing professionals at Sentient Science," Faubel said.

Prior to Mr. Faubel's work at Alstom-GE based in Switzerland and France, he was Senior Vice President of the Wind Business based in Barcelona. He joined Alstom in 2009 from Delphi where he was Divisional Vice President & European Managing Director. His professional career includes a variety of global assignments in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, US and Mexico.

"We welcome Alfonso to our executive team and look forward to his leadership growing our current operator base of 20,000 wind turbine globally to 200,000 by 2020," said Thomas, CEO & President of Sentient Science. "He has a long history building trust with energy operators at Alstom GE, and his expertise will be critical as we expand our software prediction and life extension capabilities to the critical component – bearing – level. He will also take my place as board member of WindEurope and lead the digitalization efforts of the board."

Faubel will be hiring a team in Europe of business development and customer success managers.

Faubel began his career in industrial international sales in 1988 in New York City with Ferrex. In 1990, he joined Accenture based out of Spain, leading a wide range of management consulting cross-industrial projects. In 1993, he transferred to Rome to lead Exens' Structured Financing practice across several civil engineering & infrastructure construction projects worldwide.

In 1996, he joined Delphi based in Germany, where he completed different international assignments in the Automotive Electronics & Safety Industry in Finance and M&A followed by manufacturing plant assignments in Mexico and worldwide HQ in the US. In 2001, he transferred to Paris as a Regional CFO for the Steering Division and in 2005 he was appointed Managing Director for Europe and Member of the Executive Committee and Steering Strategic Counsel.

"Today we're working with most of the major U.S. and European operators including NextEra, Duke, NRG, MidAmerican, Acciona, Dong and more."

"We look at the 'DNA' of materials, like you look at the DNA of humans. Based on what we know about materials, we can chart the future failure rates of products in the market and products being designed," continued Thomas. "We applied this knowledge in the wind market and captured 18,000 wind turbines, and now were expanding to the industrial, rail and other markets at companies like Deere, Boeing, and Rolls Royce."

Sentient's DigitalClone® Live uses a small data approach, instead of "big data," to appeal to different budget holders within an organization.

- Operational managers use DigitalClone® Live for their fielded assets that are already showing signs of failure. Sentient provides life extension solutions to keep their assets running until up-tower maintenance can be performed.

- Asset managers use DigitalClone® Live's rolling forecast on the predictive health of their fleet. This 18-month insight allows for preventative maintenance, operational changes and supplier comparisons to achieve 25-to 30-year asset life using our suggested life extension solutions.

- And finally financial stakeholders use it when assessing risk and warranty costs.

"We are disrupting a trillion-dollar supply market by leveraging our scientific and business knowledge, and working with the operators, suppliers and the OEMs as a trusted third party," said Thomas. "By focusing on the operators' success first and remaining independent of suppliers, Sentient has been able to compare and recommend the longest life solutions for extending existing assets and lowering operational costs."

About Sentient Science
Sentient Science was born out of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) need to decode the material genome of rotating components as a way to lower service costs and bring jobs back to the U.S. Sentient products were validated at NASA, which led to four additional years of technical validations before the company moved to Buffalo, N.Y. to begin commercialization.

"Technologies like those developed by Sentient represent the kind of innovation that not only creates jobs but saves companies and the federal government time and money as we look to develop new breakthroughs in engineering and materials science," said New York Senator Charles Schumer.

"The White House honored Sentient with the Tibbett's Award for our SBIR-funded research and development into materials science and the commercial success were created with our products," Thomas said.
Adwen Chooses Sentient Science for Computational Gearbox Testing of 8MW Offshore Wind Turbine

With DigitalClone®, Adwen has world’s most tested Drivetrain

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/23/2016 -- Sentient Science has announced that it has signed an agreement with Adwen to validate the drivetrain for its next generation turbine of 8MW-rated power, which has the largest annual energy production (AEP) on the market with the highest nominal torque drivetrain and largest rotor.

Adwen, the second largest offshore wind turbine manufacturer in 2015 by market share, is a joint venture between France's AREVA and Spain's Gamesa, two global energy leaders that have come together to create a major player in the offshore wind industry.

Under the terms of the agreement, Sentient Science's DigitalClone® computational testing software will be used to further validate the Adwen 8MW platform drivetrain's design and standards.

DigitalClone® is designed to provide an exhaustive and comprehensive validation strategy in which thousands of gearbox validation test points are computationally created within weeks for a fraction of the cost of physical testing. This allows massive amounts of testing points and insights to be evaluated before physical testing begins.

According to Ward Thomas, CEO and President of Sentient Science, "Confidence in 20- to 30- year rotating equipment life is our crucial objective. The world's largest equipment operators, gearbox and bearing manufacturers, as well as lubrication suppliers, are turning to Sentient to confirm that their products will lower the cost of energy by 1 cent per kWh on land and 5 cents per kWh offshore. Sentient is proud to help confirm and validate the system under design and to make sure that Adwen has the world's most tested drivetrain before our friends at Fraunhofer begin their physical testing."

Maite Basurto, Chief Technology Officer of Adwen said, "A front-end to our physical testing process with the newest computational test technology matches with our rigorous test and validation process, always with the final aim of increasing the reliability of the turbine. Using Sentient's DigitalClone® is a first step in our extensive validation program. It will contribute to having a faster certification process and, finally, a more reliable turbine available in serial production in 2018."

The United States government, including National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) and Department of Energy (DoE), has invested over $25 million in DigitalClone® to make it as accurate as physical testing. Today one in ten land-based wind turbines in the world are contracted to use the materials science-based DigitalClone® for Life Prediction & Life Extension, "Buy on Life" supply chain decisions and 30-year risk and failure analysis.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Jill Szpylman
Public Relations Manager
Telephone: 716-572-1549
Email: Click to Email Jill Szpylman
Web: http://www.sentientscience.com

Sentient Science to Expand Bearing Prognostics

Dr. Nick Weinzapfel joins Sentient from Schaeffler Bearings as Chief Scientist, Computational Bearing Life

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/22/2016 -- Sentient Science, the leader in software solutions to extend the life of mechanical systems, announced today that Dr. Nick Weinzapfel, Ph.D., has joined its team of brilliant scientists as Chief Scientist for Computational Bearings. Dr. Weinzapfel will be responsible for the development and application of bearing prognostics tools within DigitalCloneLive for Operators and DigitalCloneLive for Suppliers. Dr. Weinzapfel will reunite with his colleagues from Purdue University, Dr. Nathan Bolander and Dr. Behrooz Jalalahmadi, all three of whom received their Doctorates of Philosophy from Purdue University.

Bearings are the "microprocessor" of rotating machines. Without the right microprocessor, computers, applications and even the internet cannot operate. The same goes for rotating equipment. It is essential for operators and suppliers to understand bearing behavior today using our three levels of future failure visibility:

- Visibility 1: Now (0 to 12 months) Forecasts what components will fail in the next 90 days, also known as "imminent death." Vice presidents of operations, monitoring and engineering are typically concerned about this.

- Visibility 2: Mid term (18 months to 3 years) What will fail in the midterm and how do I extend life? Vice presidents of assets tend to look at this data. People who budget for the year, forecast every 30 days and plan every 60 days.

- Visibility 3: Long term (3 to 20 years) What is an asset's true life prediction and how can I reduce the risks? Chief executive officers, chief financial officers and vice presidents of risk want to know this information.

This makes choosing the right bearing crucial to all levels of management, because understanding this critical rolling component in a system is the only way to deliver life extension and operating and maintenance (O&M) cost reduction. Understanding the behavior of a bearing is a complex and difficult process. It took Sentient 10 years to perfect its DigitalClone models, and Dr. Weinzapfel, Dr. Bolander and the R&D team will now see it into the future.

Sentient Science, a trusted third party, offers low cost computational testing to operators and suppliers using a materials science-based prognostics simulator that continually runs millions of tests on rotating assets using 8,000 microprocessors, 24-hours a day, seven-days a week, 365-days per year.

"We are ecstatic that Nick has decided to join our team. We've admired his work for quite some time, and we are thrilled that we'll be able to use his expertise in the dynamics and materials science of energy and transportation bearings. We are now engaging bearing suppliers worldwide and making our solutions available to operators across the DigitalClone operator network," said Dr. Nathan Bolander, Chief Technology Officer at Sentient Science. "Bearings are typically the root cause of wind turbine and aerospace failures, and Nick will lead our bearing team so that we can provide the next generation DigitalClone Models with the three levels of visibility within DigtialCloneLive. Nick will introduce Sentient's new 'imminent death' product soon."

Dr. Weinzapfel holds his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and spent the last 3.5 years leading R&D of life extension and asset management technologies at Schaeffler Group, a major bearing supplier for the wind energy industry, before coming to Sentient Science to lead the R&D efforts of bearings applications for DigitalClone Solutions.

"Many of our materials scientists achieved their Ph.Ds. at Purdue University and the University at Buffalo," Bolander noted. "Our plans to keep expanding into new markets while building more partnerships with universities align perfectly with the on boarding of Dr. Weinzapfel. He will make an excellent addition to our talented team of innovators, and I can't wait to see the amazing things that will come from his work."

"It's like coming home," said Dr. Weinzapfel. "I have worked with many members of the Sentient team over the last eight years at Purdue University and also as Chairman of the Bearing Committee at STLE (Society of Tribology and Lubrication Engineers). Relationships are very important to my success and I invite my long-standing colleagues at Schaeffler, Timken and SKF to participate in my bearing research here at Sentient Science."

Sentient Science has doubled its workforce since 2014 and is on trajectory to double again by 2017. Sentient hires world class mechanical engineers, most with Ph.Ds., to help wind turbine operators lower their Levelized Cost of Energy Calculator (LCOE), through their patent-pending materials science-based DigitalClone® life prediction, life extension and Buy On Life products. In just 18 months, Sentient has more than 14,700 gearboxes under contract. Dr. Weinzapfel's research will accelerate that momentum. Sentient's R&D team now totals 13.

Sentient Science Takes $17 Million in Venture Funding

Toba Capital to Fuel Rapid Global Expansion for Sentient Science and its DigitalClone® Asset Life Extension Solution

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/15/2016 -- Sentient Science, the leading provider of materials science-based life prediction and extension technology, today announced a significant working capital infusion to add new products to its Wind Turbine Operator Fleet. Toba Capital selected Sentient Science as its first investment in materials science-based prediction software. Sentient has initially focused the "DigitalClone" technology on "Roller Bearing" centric, rotating equipment delivering computational testing and asset management.

This investment will support accelerated growth through added sales, marketing and product investments, along with international expansion. The financing supplements $25 million in Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding that had previously been competitively won from the Departments of Defense and Energy, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Sentient, which recently went to the Whitehouse to receive the nation's highest technology honor, the Tibbetts Award, will also add Supplier & Logistics services to its rapidly growing fleet of rotating equipment assets. DigitalClone models reduced the cost of energy by 1 cent per kilowatt per hour by providing three levels of asset and budget visibility: currently at six to 36 months and 20-year. DigitalClone is a fundamental innovation in the market, with physical accuracy, high visibility and a low cost, enabling efficient life extension operations and vendor comparisons for mechanical power and drivetrains, including bearings, gears, and lubrication additives.

"Sentient Science's DigitalClone software has eliminated the costs and the lengthy process associated with the physical testing of materials, components, systems and fleets. How would your business be transformed if all of your decisions were tested in real time and virtually for free? Our brilliant team of material scientists, developers and market experts give operators and suppliers simulations of millions of scenarios, tested 24-hours a day, seven-days a week, 365 days per year on every component of their rotating assets. Now, trillions of dollars in bearing-centric spending decisions can be made based on our lifing predictions, lowering the cost of sales and purchasing for our clients, while improving outcomes equal to 13 percent of revenues. That is a huge number," said Ward Thomas, Chairman and CEO of Sentient Science. "We currently have more than 14,700 gearboxes under contract, and this financing accelerates that momentum."

"Sentient Science pushes the envelope of software simulation far into what has been an expensive and wasteful hardware monopoly: testing by physically breaking," said Vinny Smith, founder of Toba Capital. "Sentient's material simulations replace hardware with no loss in accuracy. When they can do the same job, bits beat atoms every time — software is always more scalable and cost-effective than a machined alternative. We at Toba are thrilled to back Ward Thomas, the team of pioneering scientists lead by Dr. Nathan Bolander, and seasoned technology executives including Elias Tavarez and Ed Wagner. We expect to lend significant operational support and investment as Sentient becomes a dominant player in the industrial internet."

Sentient initially deployed and validated its computational testing solutions with the world's largest equipment operator, the Department of Defense, predicting the future behavior of the most complex machines (bearings, jet engines and gearboxes) on the Air Force F-35, the U.S. Army's Apache and Black Hawk rotorcraft, and the Marine Corps' Osprey programs with the world's largest OEMs, including GE, Boeing, United Technologies, Textron and Exxon. Based on the success of those flight certification tests, the Department of Energy requested the use of Sentient's computational testing solution for problematic wind turbine gearboxes, which were failing prematurely in deployment. Sentient turned its attention to the renewables market in late 2014, and in just 15 months, has captured contracts covering over 14,700 gearboxes in the United States, Mexico and Europe. With Toba's investment, Sentient will expand its operations into more countries in Europe and China.

Sentient Science Begins Delivery of DigitalClone Life Extension Software to 7675 GE Wind Turbine Gearboxes Across 13 U.S. Wind Operators

New prognostic service will provide remaining useful life and life extension control for the GE 1.5 gearbox, main bearing and pitch systems

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/05/2015 -- Sentient Science today announced immediate availability of its flagship DigitalClone Live (DCL) Software as a Service (SaaS) for both owner/operators of GE wind turbines and component suppliers of the GE gearboxes. The software will be provided worldwide in conjunction with a series of 13 customer installations throughout North America with a combined GE 1.5 fleet of 7675 gearboxes. After providing over $20 million in value to customers of its DigitalClone Live for Clipper wind turbines, the launch of DigitalClone Live for GE wind turbine owners and suppliers will address the largest portion of the U.S. installed wind turbine fleet. The GE wind turbine is installed with gearboxes from a series of OEM suppliers and Sentient will deliver lifing solutions across the gearbox variations.

DigitalClone Live provides decision support for operations professionals by predicting the "as is" remaining useful life of a gearbox. DigitalClone Live can also simulate and evaluate the lifing outcomes of O&M options such as up-tower component replacements, uprating or derating the gearbox, oil and additive solutions, and other options to extend gearbox life. For the first time operators can prioritize critical maintenance functions and plan capital expenditures over a much longer horizon, lowering their levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and making their fleets more profitable. Contracts for DigitalClone Live are now in place for nearly 20% of the North American wind fleet.

"The GE fleet is the largest wind turbine fleet in North America," said Ward Thomas, CEO of Sentient Science. "Our owner/operator customers requested a roll out strategy that would include all models of wind turbines in their fleets, beginning with the largest installed segment – the GE base. This solution will help double the life of the U.S. GE gearbox fleet by adding decades of additional service and output of these machines."

DigitalClone Live for GE 1.5 Suppliers

With the launch of DigitalClone Live, suppliers will also gain access to a computational model of the GE 1.5 gearbox to run testing evaluations on their components and services and to assess the impact on gearbox life. Suppliers expect to use this service to create the performance reports needed to engage owners/operators for new products and services. Continued Mr. Thomas, "We are constantly testing our customers fielded assets every day, all day, all year; 50,000 bearings, 225,000 gears, and 7,675 oil tests are being simulated providing performance information to owners and operators. We're now making that computational testing environment available to our operator's supplier community, to create optimal life outcomes for the GE 1.5 owners. Ultimately by empowering the operator with their supplier component life data, they will marry the right components with the right assets, creating super configurations of the GE 1.5 gearbox to extend its life and lower the ongoing O&M costs."

Sentient Science Begins Distribution of DigitalClone Live 2.0 to Predict and Extend the Life of Mechanical Systems

DigitalClone Live 2.0 now contains Prognostic models to extend the life of GE 1.5 wind turbines

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/29/2014 -- Sentient Science announced today the release of DigitalClone Live 2.0. The software is a computational tool and condition-based monitoring service that helps companies predict and extend the life and performance of critical components in design, testing, procurements and service.

DigitalClone Live was extended to meet the needs of the GE 1.5 owner operators in North America to understand the life and health of their assets and to know the impact of both up-rating their wind turbines or the impact on asset life after up-tower replacement of gearbox components.

DigitalClone Live 2.0 delivers a more modern navigation and user experience allowing the customer better predictive health management and control over their assets. The newest release includes responsive capabilities for an improved viewing experience and enhanced asset reporting allowing the customer to adjust and create specific reports unique to their needs. At the system level, the user is now able to represent and simulate in DigitalClone Live the life extension impact of an up-tower part replacement or the impact of up-rating on asset life and health.

"We created DigitalClone Live 2.0 as a response to customer's requests for additional OEM gearbox systems to be added to the DigitalClone Live service. We are in the process of adding the various GE 1.5 gearbox configurations, and Mitsubishi, Vestas and Gamesa wind turbines. Other OEMs will follow on the Version 2.0 platform in 2015", said Ward Thomas, President of Sentient Science.

In the new version, features have also been added that allow for more flexibility in utilizing prognostic data. The alert center now offers the capability to track each individual alert and action taken as a result, providing the user with an enhanced and up-to-date understanding of the assets health. The life setting control now allows the user to optimize different health reports to understand the life of a wind turbine asset or the entire fleet depending on varying operating conditions.

In DigitalClone Live 2.0 there was a large focus on making the health and alert levels more involved. To accomplish this, the health level of the asset went from a scale of 12-48 months remaining life to a scale of 45 days to 60 months remaining life. Sentient Science has fused their sensor diagnostics into their prognostic models, which now provides customers with more detailed life predictions for short-term operational failure or long-term asset management.

"All of the upgrades and additions to DigitalClone Live 2.0 are aimed at helping our customers extend the life of their fielded assets. By providing them with the most enhanced tools to improve asset life, they will have assets that will run in the field at the lowest operational cost." continued Thomas.

Sentient Science Wins Contract with Air Force for Computational Life Extension

Buffalo, NY -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/01/2014 -- Today, Sentient Science announced they were awarded a contract with the Air Force (FA8650-14-M-2499) to develop an add on to their DigitalClone® family of software tools that computationally predict the final stages of material, component, and system life for small and long crack effects for both fixed wing and rotorcraft vehicles.

Sentient Science will be working with the Air Force, to apply DigitalClone modeling technology for the later stages of long crack growth. DigitalClone is able to predict the material microstructural crack size and shape as well as applied loading conditions for the three phases of failure – crack nucleation, small crack, and now long crack propagation. This service is designed to maximize the remaining useful life of components and to predict when and how to remanufacture components before they fail. This will allow the US Air Force to reduce inspection and physical test costs by replacing components at the right time, with the right configuration, and vendor for that machine. This breakthrough will save lives by predicting early component failures.

The technology will be reused in the Power Generation market for the life extension of wind turbine gearboxes and blades to maximize the output per kw/hr and double their 2nd life in remanufacturing through "super configurations". Wind Turbine Operator, First Wind, expects a 1cent per kw/hr cost of Energy (COE) reduction on Clipper and GE 1.5 Wind Turbine maintenance as a result.

"Our energy customers told us that squeezing every drop of revenue out of wind turbines is critical. Extending the existing investments in gearbox and blade systems is essential in creating value equal to the existing Production Tax Credit (PTC) while lowering carbon emissions," said, Ward Thomas, President, Sentient Science. "It is remarkable timing that our Air Force customer and Energy customer goals are aligned."

Sentient Science has over ten years of software development experience in material microstructure modeling, fatigue analysis, and life prediction. Sentient is currently providing their prognostic models to aerospace OEMs and a variety of other industries to design their structures and components more efficiently and execute more accurate performance and life analysis.

"As one of the principles at Altair, I am very impressed with Sentient's ability to apply computational microstructure-based life prediction and surface engineering capabilities within the DigitalClone software. I have been working with Sentient over the past year and have seen the R&D and customer adoption. Increasing the accuracy of computational fracture mechanics for short and long crack growth is of importance to Altair," said Brett Chouinard, COO, Altair Engineering.
About Sentient Science
Sentient Science, founded in 2001, is an independent company based both in New York and Idaho. It uses its proprietary software and sensor technology to deploy patent pending algorithms that can predict, with a high degree of accuracy, the future life of a component based on its composition material. Sentient Science will deploy its new cloud-based prediction software and sensor products that feature Sentient's DigitalCloneLive technology. DigitalCloneLive was developed by Sentient Science in partnership with the US Military. After 10 years of Federal investment and validation, Sentient successfully adapted the technology forcommercial applications with additional funding from several federal sources and with a grant from the New York State R&D Authority.

The system is now operational and is the first of its kind in the country.

"We provide First Wind with state-of-the-art technology to extract reliable information containing the status of their gearbox assets and potential options for extending the life of those assets", said Ward Thomas, CEO of Sentient Science.
