Innovative Family Planning Option Undergoing Testing in Developing World

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/04/2014 -- Cycle Technologies announced that the CycleBeads® Android app is now undergoing testing in Kenya by the Institute for Reproductive Health. This patented family planning option is based on the highly effective Standard Days Method ® of family planning. The CycleBeads smartphone app enables women to plan or prevent pregnancy by tracking their periods and identifying which days of their cycles they are fertile. It is the only app that is based on a proven, effective methodology that allows a woman to identify her fertile days using just her period data.

"The growth of mobile phones, and in particular smartphones and feature phones, offers innovative ways to reach people directly with family planning services and information. We are interested in seeing how this solution will work in a context like Kenya where there is high internet and mobile use, but also significant unmet need for contraception" says Alexis Ettinger, Director for Social Innovation, Institute for Reproductive Health.

The Institute is working with iHub Research in Kenya to test the acceptability, feasibility and viability of the CycleBeads Android app and exploring how the technology can be improved for users in a variety of settings. Based on feedback to date, Cycle Technologies has already updated the start-up process to help guide a woman through the initial set up.

"We're seeing that the key to creating technology tools that can be used globally is to keep it simple. Technology must be truly intuitive and integrated into existing channels in order for there to be widespread adoption. The beauty of this family planning method is its simplicity which makes designing a simple app that can be used by women anywhere in the world to plan or prevent pregnancy, much easier" says, Leslie Heyer, Founder and President of Cycle Technologies.

The findings from the research are expected to be announced in 2015.

CycleBeads Digital Tools Included in USAID's Article, "Five Promising Innovations in Contraception"

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/24/2014 -- In a recent article celebrating World Contraception Day, USAID highlighted CycleBeads® digital tools as a promising innovation in contraception. The article focuses on family planning options with which USAID has been involved, including a range of birth control options from barrier methods to hormonal contraceptives.

As described in the article, "Five Promising Innovations in Contraception", CycleBeads digital tools are a step forward in birth control. CycleBeads Online and the CycleBeads smartphone apps enable women to plan or prevent pregnancy entirely through mobile technology.

"We estimate that over 4.5 million unplanned pregnancies have been prevented using the physical CycleBeads tool. But with the worldwide increase in internet access and the growing use of smartphones, the CycleBeads digital tools have the potential to have an even greater impact," says Leslie Heyer, President of Cycle Technologies.

According to the company, CycleBeads digital tools are already used by approximately 50,000 women. 85% of women currently using the CycleBeads smartphone apps and online service are from the U.S. However, these technologies are also being tested in the developing world with plans to make them more widely available there.

According to Ellen Starbird, USAID's Director of Population & Reproductive Health, "USAID has worked for nearly half a century to expand access to voluntary family planning information and services across the globe…As we work to meet the needs of the 222 million women who want to avoid pregnancy, but aren't using modern contraception, it is vital for us to invest in new methods that expand women's options."

Cycle Technologies Shares 12 Years of Insights on the Importance of Tracking Your Menstrual Cycle

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/11/2014 -- Cycle Technologies issued a statement outlining the reasons why women should track their menstrual cycles. According to Ann Mullen, the company's Director of Client Services & Health Education, "Since 2002 we have helped women track their cycles and use this information to plan or prevent pregnancy. While our focus has been on helping women to achieve their reproductive goals, we've also realized that there are a number of other benefits that come from tracking your menstrual cycle."

According to Cycle Technologies, these reasons include:
- Reducing stress.
- Identifying health issues.
- Managing fertility.

Reducing stress.

Regular cycles are a good sign of a healthy body. While the average length of a regular cycle is 28 days long, it is normal to have cycles anywhere from 21 – 35 days long. The length that a woman's period lasts can also vary. The average length is 4 days, but anywhere from 3-7 days is considered normal.

"Keeping track of your cycles can be eye opening. I thought my cycle was irregular and was often surprised when I go it," says Julie Barnett a health worker who started tracking her cycles two years ago using Cycle Technologies' free CycleBeads app on her Android phone. "Using a fertility calendar alleviates some of the mystery helping me know what to expect and when. It takes a lot of the stress out of the whole process."
Identifying health issues.

Cycle Technologies also encourages women to track their cycles so they can more easily recognize if something is amiss. According to the company:

- Extremely long cycles (more than 35 days long) may indicate health or fertility issues. Long or irregular cycles are often related to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a condition in which a woman experiences an imbalance of hormones.

- Extremely short cycles (shorter than 21 days long) can be associated with lifestyle behaviors such as smoking.

- Women who experience a lot of variation in their cycle lengths (more than 10 days) or who experience extremely long or short cycles, may have more trouble getting pregnant and maintaining pregnancies.

Managing fertility.

Tracking her periods can also help a woman identify her potentially fertile days according to Cycle Technologies. This information can then be used to effectively prevent pregnancy or to get pregnant more quickly.

- The Standard Days Method™ of family planning, the method on which Cycle Technologies' CycleBeads products are based, is +95% effective at preventing pregnancy and has also been found to help women achieve pregnancy more quickly. To use this method, a woman tracks the start date of her period each cycle and the CycleBeads tools help her know that her cycles are in the appropriate range for using this method and when she is on a fertile day.

- According to the most recent CDC report, 18% of U.S. women have used a "calendar-based" family planning method and the more educated a woman is, the more likely she is to use one.

- The Standard Days Method is the only "calendar-based" method that has been proven in efficacy studies.

"As women track their cycles, they become much more aware of the changes that occur during their cycles, and more aware of how it relates to their own fertility. This can be educational and empowering. It seems like a small thing, but just having this basic information is extremely useful," says Mullen.

Cycle Technologies Releases Infographic on Addressing Unmet Need in Family Planning

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/12/2014 -- Cycle Technologies released an infographic as part of its Solutions for Unmet Needs in Family Planning initiative detailing the three steps that will help ensure access to quality, family planning options. The infographic highlights the need for a woman-centric approach in the development of new reproductive health commodities and services.

Recently there has been significant interest in family planning from leading donor organizations, governments and development agencies, as the impact of investing in family planning has been better understood and major global health and aid organizations have focused on the issue.

As an example, earlier this year, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, signed a memorandum of understanding to improve access to family planning information, services and contraceptives to people in developing counties. The agreement is in support of the global goal of expanding family planning access of high-quality services and supplies for 120 million women and girls in the world's 69 poorest countries by 2020.

According to Leslie Heyer, President of Cycle Technologies, "Partnerships and commitments like this are critical to helping women and girls have access to information, supplies, and services. And it's not just about giving them access to current services. It's about figuring out what solutions they need to fit their unique circumstances whether those are barrier, hormonal, or fertility awareness options."

As outlined in Cycle Technologies' family planning infographic:
- 80 million unplanned pregnancies occur worldwide with 95% of these to women who are not using contraception or using it inconsistently
- 65 million unplanned pregnancies occur in the developing world each year

The CDC earlier this year issued new guidelines for "Offering Family Planning Services". They recommend a "client-centered approach" and defined this as "care that is respectful of, and responsive to, client preferences, needs and values."

Evidence also shows that creating options is important for meeting unmet need because it enables women to find the best choice for them, makes it less likely that a woman will discontinue use, and increases contraceptive use in communities where choices are available.

"Creating family planning options is a challenging process. It requires a lot of investment to make them available, and even more to make them sustainable. But the potential impact from providing more options to women is enormous, and the benefit makes it worthwhile," says Heyer.

Cycle Technologies Launches 2Day - The First and Only Smartphone App Based on the TwoDay Method of Family Planning

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/09/2014 -- Cycle Technologies announced today the launch of a new iPhone app designed to help women use the TwoDay Method®, a natural family planning method that is based on a woman's individual fertility symptoms and is extremely easy to use. The app can be used both to plan a pregnancy and to prevent pregnancy.

The scientifically proven methodology behind the patent pending 2Day app was developed by the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University. To accurately use the method, a woman simply needs to note the presence or absence of cervical secretions. It doesn't require extensive observations and charting to be accurate and effective like other symptoms-based methods.

The method was tested in ongoing research studies starting in 2004, and proven to be 96% effective at preventing pregnancy. However it has not been made available on a wide-scale basis until now.

"Before smartphones it would have been almost impossible to make this information widely available and to provide women with a cost-effective tool to use it. Technology allows us to do this in an efficient way – putting this simple family planning method right into a woman's hands. We are thrilled to have a new, effective solution to offer women," says Leslie Heyer, President of Cycle Technologies.

The TwoDay Method relies on an individual woman observing the presence or absence of secretions. If she sees secretions today OR yesterday, she is fertile. If she does NOT want to get pregnant, she and her partner can use a barrier method or avoid intercourse. If she did not observe secretions today OR yesterday, then she is unlikely to get pregnant on that day.

"After years of working with different fertility awareness-based methods, we realized that there was a need to identify a method that could be easily taught and used correctly. Our researchers saw that the common denominator for ALL fertile days is the presence of noticeable cervical secretions. Additional information, such as characteristics of the secretions or even things like body temperature is really not necessary when using this method. This is what makes it an easy method to learn and use," says Dr. Victoria Jennings, Director of the Institute for Reproductive Health.

"There are a number of fertility apps on the market" says Heyer, "but frankly they require a lot of work – taking your temperature every morning, observing your secretions in great detail, etc. For a lot of women, using a natural family planning method that requires her to analyze her symptoms is just too much. This app changes that."

The company plans to make the 2Day family planning app available for free through the month of July. After that, the app will be available to download at a low price in the iTunes store.

More information about the method and the iPhone app are available at twodaymethod.com

Cycle Technologies Launches Free iCycleBeads App for iOS

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/07/2014 -- Cycle Technologies today announced the launch of iCycleBeads Lite for iOS devices – a free version of the popular iCycleBeads fertility app which enables women to plan or prevent pregnancy easily using the Standard Days Method of family planning. The iCycleBeads Lite app lets a woman track her cycle, and know which days of her cycle she is potentially fertile.

"We are excited to make this method available to women for free. The CycleBeads apps – both the complete version and the new lite version, are the only period tracking apps in the world which are based on a patented, scientifically tested methodology that is proven at preventing pregnancy as well as helping a woman plan a pregnancy. A woman using this method doesn't have to take her temperature daily or track fertility symptoms. She just enters the date of her period and the app does the rest." says Leslie Heyer, President of Cycle Technologies.

To use the iCycleBeads Lite app, a woman enters the date her period starts. The app will:

- Immediately let her know if she is on a day when pregnancy is possible.
- Show her cycle information in both a calendar and a "CycleBeads" format.
- Send her pop-up alerts notifying her when she is on a fertile day, when her fertile window is ending, and when she is likely to get her next period.
- Remind her to enter her next period date.

The one medical requirement for using this family planning method is that a woman should have cycles between 26 and 32 days long. The iCycleBeads Lite app will alert a woman if she has a cycle out of this range.

The complete iCycleBeads app is available for $2.99 on both iOS and Android devices. Additional features on the complete iCycleBeads app include the ability to:

- Maintain your cycle history.
- Back up and email your cycle history as needed.
- Take notes.

Customers who have used the iCycleBeads apps and reviewed them online say,

"It's so simple. I can't believe how easy this is."

"I've used it to plan a pregnancy, and I'm now pregnant with a little baby girl. Thank you!"

"(iCycleBeads) is the best fertility app out there. It works!"

Cycle Technologies Reaches 3 Million CycleBeads Users Worldwide

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/07/2014 -- Cycle Technologies today announced that more than three million women and couples around the world have used CycleBeads®.

The CycleBeads family of products are based on the Standard Days Method®, the most effective natural family planning method available. CycleBeads, CycleBeads Online, and iCycleBeads smartphone apps help a woman to track her period, and accurately identify which day's pregnancy is possible each cycle. The method is designed for women with cycles between 26 and 32 days long, which is the majority of women. CycleBeads products can be used either to prevent pregnancy or to plan a pregnancy. Its family planning tools make natural birth control easy and effective.

CycleBeads was developed by the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and is the only clinically proven calendar-based family planning method. It is over 95% effective at preventing pregnancy. Approximately 75% of its users use it to prevent pregnancy. The remaining 25% are either actively trying to get pregnant or planning to try in the next year.

"I used it as an ovulation calendar," says Lauren Taylor of Virginia. "It helped me see when ovulation was likely to occur and know exactly which days pregnancy is possible."

CycleBeads has been used by women in more than 50 countries, with particular emphasis on developing countries, and it has been used by over 100,000 women in the U.S. The original CycleBeads tool, a color-coded string of beads, has been available since 2002. More recently the company has developed smartphone apps for iOS and Android as well as an online service.

To celebrate this milestone, Cycle Technologies has released a documentary-style video featuring interviews of women from the Washington, DC area who have used this family planning method to prevent pregnancies, plan pregnancies, and simply to gain information about their cycles.

"We're excited to take a moment to reflect on the impact that this family planning tool has had on the lives of so many women," said Leslie Heyer, President of Cycle Technologies. "We are also grateful to the many individuals and organizations who have worked hard to make sure women have access to this method."
