For Gupta, the long and winding road between setting out to be an entrepreneur and helping four other start-ups shape their ventures has been a strenuous one. But there are some immeasurable benefits.<br />

"The whole idea of taking on these assignments is that some of their energy gets transferred to us. In most start-ups, the thinking is disruptive. Their way of looking at things and ideating is so creative," says Gupta, adding it helps his own firm stay young, and connected to the core proposition of speaking to the audience with every idea.<br />

"Each of these companies is trying to tell and sell a story. With every start-up, the struggle begins anew. Most tend to commit the same mistake," he adds. Nevertheless, helping people find success as well as profits is what keeps Gupta going.<br />
<br />
After having spent 10 years in a corporate job, "the method and madness of start-ups is an interesting dynamic," Gupta says However, it has been a tough row to hoe for the Founder of Phonethics. "There are many aspects of a situation that provide the richest opportunities to be creative, but for some seasoned guys, Apple is the beginning and end of style. They don&apos;t want to think out of the box, but want ideas that are innovative and ground-breaking," he adds. He insists that his agency will not work with all start-ups. Gupta learnt it the hard way in 2014. "It is an endless strain on one&apos;s time. Some of them don&apos;t know what they want to do. Others have too many ideas on their plate. Some don&apos;t realise how late they are in their preparedness."<br />
<br />
"In some start-ups, the brief (to the advertising agency) keeps changing. The first few months of every start-up can be challenging. I met 10 start-ups last year, and their product was essentially plain vanilla. It&apos;s a sheer waste of time sometimes," he adds.<br />
<br />
Early days<br />
<br />
Gupta insists that hard work and perseverance pay. A student of the Rashtriya Indian Military College at Dehradun, Gupta earned his Economic Honours at the Delhi University.<br />
<br />
"The first company I set up was a telemarketing company. Business was booming at that time, and I sold the firm immediately. It wasn&apos;t a very big transaction, a few lakhs back in 1997-98," he says.<br />
<br />
Gupta then started working with advertisers and photographers. Then came a film assignment.<br />
<br />
"I wrote a short film called Control Alt Delete. The casting was in Delhi, but I didn&apos;t have any money. It was highly experimental. I had no savings, just around ?7-8 lakh in the bank. I was trying to put together a film production company with that," says Gupta "I was 27 at that time and was new to the whole world of entrepreneurship."<br />
<br />
The borrowing happened on the last day of the shoot. "A few thousands, but it was a loan, nevertheless. We went bone dry on money. My friends and younger brother had to rush to the ATM in the middle of the night to withdraw cash. It was that bad," he recalls.<br />
<br />
Thankfully for Gupta, the film took an interesting turn of its own. "Since I was trying to spread the word about the short film, I started exploring ways to distribute it on mobile phones and over the internet. It was around the same time that mobile phones had started to emerge, and data was not a reality then, though it seemed inevitable. This led to the creation of original short form content on phones, Phonethics."<br />
<br />
In January 2006, Gupta and his team "raised ?40 lakh to produce original content on mobiles. At that time, it was only cricket or Bollywood. It was the ring-tone era, and it was a rising sector." All the angel investors have essentially been friends.<br />
<br />
"There is a lot of seed action happening right now, especially with e-learning and dating websites. The ability to raise money totally rests on the idea, and the honesty that one brings to the table. I have learnt this from 2005 to 2015. There is no shortage (of money) now, not on the supply side of capital. There is enough money for people who got teams in place," he adds.<br />

The lack of an organized cohesive strategy will lead to wasted time, money and opportunity.  Before you invest real dollars toward your digital marketing efforts you should have the following planned out.<br />
<br />
Understand your marketplace. A brand needs to have a sound understanding of its competitors, geographical boundaries, customer demographics, existing distribution channels, and any information on trends in your markets (both demographic and product-related).<br />
<br />
Perform a SWOT Analysis. Understand your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.<br />
<br />
Define your marketing objectives. What do you want to achieve as a result of your marketing efforts and what goals and KPI&apos;s are you using to measure success?<br />
<br />
Have a budget. What can you afford to spend on this marketing effort as a whole and then how is it broken down by individual marketing channel?  You need to spend your money wisely especially if you are on a limited budget.  For example, if you need direct response for success, consider doing Pay Per Click instead of Social Media.<br />

It is important to communicate realistic expectations to your clients. The following are average timelines per service: <br />

Pay Per Click Campaign: 90 days.  This is an average estimate but with Pay Per Click campaigns, the bidding needs to be optimized and the copy needs to be constantly A/B tested to find the right messaging so that the client&apos;s goals can be met.  This doesn&apos;t happen overnight. As changes are made, they need time to mature and gain traction. This usually takes 90 days.<br />

Search Engine Optimization: 90-180 days.  SEO is one of the most mysterious aspects of digital marketing because Google holds all the cards and they are constantly changing the rules of the game.  Therefore, we try to set attainable goals and manage expectations for potential success.  To be frank, 90 days is being generous. 180 days is usually more realistic, and it all depends on the keywords you are trying to rank for and how competitive they are.<br />

The Viral Video Factory<br />
Ask anyone who knows and they&apos;ll tell you that it&apos;s fairly impossible to create a viral video. Sure, you can try, but no matter how many kittens and half-naked models you include, the odds of success are still long.<br />
<br />
Yet the New York-based Thinkmodo has had viral hit after viral hit including "Bubba&apos;s Hovercraft," "Flying People" and, most recently "Devil Baby," which have all racked up millions of views.<br />
<br />
Thinkmodo cranks out such hits despite a staff of just three. "The challenge of forming a successful agency of our size is that each person has to wear multiple hats, and can wear them well," says James Percelay, former Saturday Night Live writer and co-founder of Thinkmodo. "The upside of being an &apos;artisanal&apos; hands-on agency that writes, directs, produces, and oversees every detail of its projects is a nimbleness and control that few agencies have."<br />
<br />
The only other agency that appears to be devoted full-time to creating viral videos is Contagious, a Los Angeles shop founded in November. Contagious is much larger — there are 20 people on staff — but the company not only make viral videos, but promotes them on behalf of others. The agency&apos;s biggest such promotion to date was Turkish Airlines&apos; "Kobe vs. Messi" ad, which was released in December and has since topped 100 million views. Tim Staples, the agency&apos;s founding partner, says the secret is to seed would-be viral videos to a list of 8,000 sources, including bloggers, YouTube gadflies and publications specializing in viral content, including Mashable.<br />
<br />
Contagious&apos; batting average for viral videos, meanwhile, is a jaw-dropping 50%. Staples says that 70 out of 140 of the company&apos;s videos have more than 1 million views. If you consider 100,000-plus views viral, then the percentage is more like 90%. "Good content isn&apos;t necessarily shareable," Staples says. By "good," he means high-production. "Just because it looks good doesn&apos;t mean it&apos;s compelling," he says.<br />
<br />
GIFs as Advertising<br />
Another possibly emerging advertising category is GIFs. While most of us think of GIFs as bait for Reddit posts or as a primary means of communication for Millennials, Graham McFarland, envisions GIFs as animated billboards for the digital age.<br />
<br />
McFarland&apos;s company, the Austin, Texas-based Cinegif, makes GIFs on behalf of clients like John Deere, Coors&apos; Blue Moon pseudo craft beer and the Texas Monthly. Such GIFs start at $95 but average in the $300-$400 range, McFarland says. He claims that his ads get 500% more clicks than a banner ad and 100% more than a Flash ad. (Since Cinegif&apos;s ads aren&apos;t in Flash, they can be viewed on iOS devices.)<br />

The Internet of Everything<br />
As previously reported, the ad world is transfixed at the moment by the vision of a world of connected devices.<br />

While that scenario hasn&apos;t materialized yet, a couple of ad agencies are trying to get out in front of the trend. In March, Doug Hecht, the president and COO of the San Diego-based shop Digitaria spun off Big On Mars, which claims Ford Motor, Qualcomm and GoPro as clients. As Hecht told The New York Times, BOM is designed to help brands address the preponderance of connected refrigerators, smart auto dashboards and wearable devices with the appropriate technology.<br />

BOM has a competitor in this emerging category, sort of. The UK-based Everything makes digital IDs for products.
