UCSB Determines the Pleasure Principle in Cocaine

Altadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/14/2014 -- The University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) initiated a research to examine the motivational system caused by cocaine in animals. This will trigger the awareness of more people taking part on the pursuit to stop cocaine addiction.

Aaron Ettenberg, professor in UCSB's Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences said, "We weren't looking at pleasure; we were looking at the animal's desire to seek that pleasure, which we believe is the key to understanding drug abuse." This is the same focus of Pax House, one of the renowned drug rehabilitations centers in California that continues to do research of the relation between human behavior and substance abuse.

The results of the research suggest that there are similar neural mechanisms in the animal's way of deciding on things with the influence of cocaine. Ettenberg said, "Just looking at the positive is looking at only half the picture; you have to understand the negative side as well."

He added, "It's not just the positive, rewarding effects of cocaine that drive this desire to seek the drug" he said. "It's the net reward, which takes into account the negative consequences in addition to the positive. Together the two determine the net positive output that will lead to the motivated behavior."

The researchers made use of the norepinephrine instead of cocaine since the latter is known to affect the primary neurotransmitter. Headed by professor Ettenberg, the researchers studied two parts of the brain, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) and the central nucleus of the amygdale (CeA). These parts are known to trigger effects on the emotional process.

This significantly addresses a different approach in the treatment of cocaine addiction. Ettenberg said, "We need to more fully understand the underlying neuronal mechanisms altered by cocaine before we can treat people. Once we understand how the brain systems producing the positive/euphoric and negative/anxiety effects of the drug interact, we might be able to produce treatments that address the balance between these two opposing actions, both of which serve as strong driving forces. We therefore need to understand both of these systems in order to come up with a rational treatment down the line."

The research thoroughly contributes to the understanding of cocaine in emotional process of a victim. The result of the study is now being disseminated by the healthcare team of Pax House. Pax delivers effective therapy to substance abuse with their competent, experienced, licensed, and certified counselors.
U.S. Officials Plans to Search Ways of Reducing Drug Addiction

Altadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/26/2014 -- U.S. officials target to reduce the incidence of addiction from heroin and prescription painkillers. This is due to the rising death toll of substance abuse as seen from recent records.

According to Gil Kerlikowske, the director of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy, "The use of opioids -- a group of drugs that includes heroin and prescription painkillers -- is having a devastating impact on public health and safety in communities across the nation." He added, "In 2010, approximately 100 Americans died from overdoses every day"

The data showed that there are about 16,600 deaths in 2010 due to prescription painkillers and 3,000 are seen from heroin use. These figures surpass the cases of murder and car crash in the United States. In fact, the use of heroin soared over the past few years. In 2007, 373,000 people were seen using heroin and it soared high in 2012, where 669,000 heroin users were observed. This is due to the fact that heroin becomes more available and relatively more affordable.

"Heroin is an opioid, as is morphine and commonly prescribed painkillers like hydrocodone and oxycodone," said Dr. Wilson Compton, the deputy director of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse. He said, "These are all classified as opioids because they exert their effect by attaching to the opioid receptor found in our brain and spinal cord."

He added, "Opioids also cause pleasurable sensations. It's through that mechanism that abuse can result in physical dependency and addiction. These functions can be slowed to such an extent that they often result in a coma or death."

In relation to that, Kerlikowske said, "Many individuals who develop a substance abuse disorder or who overdose begin by misusing prescription drugs. It is clear we are not going to arrest our way out of this problem. Science has shown that drug addiction is a disease of the brain -- a disease that can be prevented, treated and from which one can recover."

With that, the government is taking initiative to reduce the rate of heroin and painkiller use. Kerlikowske recommended the police and the EMTs to be the most concerned individuals in pursuing this effort. He said, "Saving a life is more important than making an arrest."

The efforts to eliminate drug use and abuse have to be made, not by government alone but by private individuals, as well. With the help of concerned citizens, drug abuse can gradually be eradicated, saving the lives of many people.
Substance Abuse Now Easily Identified by a Single Question

Altadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/27/2014 -- Doctors and other healthcare professionals can now easily determine any symptoms on drug abuse, as a new study suggests, using a single question for diagnosis.

The study was conducted at the Boston Medical Center primary care clinic in which about 300 participants joined. The lead author of the study, Dr. Richard Saitz, said it their press release that, "We found that single questions may be useful in both screening and preliminary assessment." Dr. Saitz is a professor of the community health sciences in Boston University School of Public Health.

He added, "Instead of extensive interviews or long questionnaires, which are a barrier to screening in primary care settings, this approach may make it much easier to identify and appropriately address unhealthy substance use."

The process of the study involved participants being asked the number of times they have consumed drinks in a day. The participants also answered another question about the frequency of their use of illegal drugs with no medical reason.

The result of the study shows that 88 percent of the participants have alcohol dependency, while 97 percent have drug dependence. The results have just verified the study published by the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, published January. As such, drug abuse problems can be more useful if obtained easily on actual screening time.

Saitz said, "We're moving from identifying the problem to being able to gauge, in a relatively quick and simple way, whether it is severe enough to warrant more urgent attention."

The diagnostic procedure in substance abuse usually is very complex and it is good to see development in using simple measures to easily determine symptoms of drug abuse. This could further improve the treatments necessary for quick healing, as always done by Pax House.
