Findings Suggest Poor Outcomes with Dental Extraction Before Cardiac Surgery

Brea, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/05/2014 -- New study shows that the risk of tooth extraction before heart surgery is higher than what was thought by the healthcare professionals. This was announced by Dr. Kendra Grim, an anesthesiologist in Mayo Clinic.

She said, "We are always concerned with improving safety, and pulling infected teeth before heart surgery seemed to be the safer intervention. But we became interested in studying this complex patient group, as many patients that come to the operating room for dental surgery just before heart surgery are quite ill."

This fact is linked to the prosthetic heart valve-related endocarditis that contributes to about one-fourth of infective endocarditis cases and accounts to 38 percent of mortality rate. This prompts all physicians to focus on the risk factors involving the management of the condition, including pre-surgery preventive measures such as poor dental health. Tooth extraction is one of the preventive measures most physicians recommend but medical guidelines acknowledged lack of evidence of its safety.

The study was designed to evaluate the adverse outcome of pre-cardiac surgery dental extractions. The 205 participants were Mayo Clinic patients who had tooth extraction before cardiac surgery. The results show that 3 percent of the patients died in the period of tooth extraction and cardiac procedure. Another six patients were hospitalized and ten had adverse health effects after the surgery. Moreover, 14 patients had delayed cardiac surgery due to unexpected complications.

Dr. Grim says, ""We hope this study sparks future discussion and research. In the meantime, we recommend an individualized approach for these patients, to weigh their particular risk and benefit of a dental procedure before cardiac surgery with the information we have currently available."

This latest findings suggest careful ways to do tooth extraction among dental health practitioners. Proper diagnosis and evaluation have to be carefully initiated to reduce serious health risks, especially among patients who are suffering from heart disease. Good thing Dr. Grant Burdick of Designed Smiles has established a good reputation on this field.

Social Inequalities Linked by Dental Care in School

Breat, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/24/2014 -- In a recent study, the University of Copenhagen and the World Health Organization (WHO) found out that schools have important roles in promoting health and prevention of disease.

According the Poul Erik Petersen, a Global Health Specialist and a professor at the Department of Odontology at the University of Copenhagen, "Children in Scandinavia generally have healthy teeth and gums, largely on account of dental care in schools for all children, the arrival of fluoride toothpaste on the market, a healthy lifestyle, and high living standards. But the situation in the poorest countries of the world is very different to that in Scandinavia. However, it is positive to note that the WHO's Health Promoting Schools Initiative is gaining ground at global level, and that they are gradually wiping out the social inequities in dental health."

He added, "We have collected data based on questions about health and dental care from 61 countries that run health programmes in schools. Our findings reveal that those schools that have set up healthy school environments - and which offer all children education in dental health and disease prevention - are generally well-placed to set children on a path to a healthy lifestyle throughout their lives, with regard to issues such as diet, physical exercise, tobacco, alcohol and HIV control."

The survey covered different countries that run formalized teaching about brushing of teeth. However, not all countries have access to clean water, such as countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

This resulted to social inequality. Peterson explained, "Even in a rich country like Denmark, we see social inequalities to dental care, despite the fact that dental health here is much improved among both children and adults. The socially and financially disadvantaged groups of the population show a high incidence of tooth and mouth complaints compared with the more affluent groups."

"Inequality is greater in developing countries where people are battling with limited resources, an increasing number of children with toothache, children suffering from HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases - combined with a lack of preventive measures and trained healthcare staff."

Assuring good dental health is so dynamic that schools also have a significant role in promoting awareness. The roles of schools, together with the parents, doctors, and peers, are important. This is why Dr. Grant A. Burdick makes sure that all patients are well-educated about the importance of dental health. Over the years, he has maintained private practice where patients have seen dramatic changes on their over-all health.
Study Shows Many Dental Insurances Wasted

Brea, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/14/2014 -- According to the new study conducted at the University of Maryland School for Dentistry, people who own dental insurance are not using it when necessary. This only means that people do not thoroughly understand the importance of dental health, which leads to poor over-all wellness.

One of the lead authors, Richard J. Manski, who is also a professor at the University of Maryland School for Dentistry, said that the study, which was published in the American Journal of Public Health, can be a baseline in promoting the importance of dental care to the public. Together with his research team, they gathered people who own and do not own dental insurance. The analysis confirms that people who own dental insurance do not use it for dental care, and one of the factors affecting it was age. Also, the reducing employment and the over-all status of the economy play an important role on people seeking dental care.

The study also confirms of the possibility of changes to one's attitude on health. Creating a positive impact on the way a person sees the importance of dental care can make a big difference.

Good thing, this is now being implemented by many dentists who take advantage of the power of internet to create an awareness of the importance of dental care. One of which is Grant A. Burdick, a famous dentist in La Habra and Brea.

With his efforts to reach out to many people, he established a website called Designedsmiles.com that focuses on delivering a positive impact to dental care. Such impact is done by means of publishing different blogs to keep people well-informed about the causes of different dental problems. Also, the website provides comprehensive information about the different services offered in their dental clinic.

"At Designed Smiles, every aspect of our Orange County dental office was "designed" as well – with our patients as the first priority. We understand that you prefer an office with soothing interiors and comfortable amenities; so, we make it a point to provide them throughout. For instance, patients of our Brea dentist have access to television and stereo headphones during dental treatment."

National Children's Dental Health Month Begins

Brea, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/04/2014 -- In line with the National Children's Dental Health Month, the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) reminds all parents to take care of their children's teeth. Experts advise parents to visit their dentist during the first year of their child's life to promote good dental health.

AGD spokesperson, Kay Jordan, says, "During a child's first dental visit, the dentist can carefully examine the development of the child's mouth. Many parents are surprised to learn that their little ones can develop tooth decay, or cavities, as soon as their teeth appear."

Dr. Jordan added, "A visit to the dentist doesn't just benefit the child. Parents can pick up tips about properly caring for their child's teeth. Talk to your dentist to learn how to soothe teething irritations, stop prolonged pacifier- and finger-sucking, modify your child's diet to reduce cavity-causing sugars, and more."

Survey Says Numerous Americans Aren't Given Preventive Oral Care

Brea, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/21/2014 -- Survey shows that a lot of Americans are not given preventive dental care among ethnic and racial groups as published in the journal of the Frontier in Public Health on December 17, 2013. This indicates the possibility of increased dental problems across America.

The study conducted made use of telephone survey with a high number of participants. 644,635 middle-aged adults were surveyed and found out that there is an increase of preventive dental care between the year 1999 and 2008 as sourced in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance.

However, there is a major discrepancy between the said years. 23–43 percent of the participants were not able to obtain preventive dental procedures in the year 2008. The ethnicity differs from ethnicity. It was found out that 57 percent of the Black Americans were not able to receive medical care. This is far different from the 77 percent of Asian Americans who were not able to gain access to preventive dental care. The data also show that 76 percent of whites and 62 percent of Native Americans and Hispanics lacked the mentioned oral care procedure.

The survey conducted provided an efficient approximate of the frequency of preventive oral care in different ethnic groups across the United States. It also suggests more campaign awareness about the importance of dental health by means of educating the middle-aged group to see the impact of dental health to the quality of life.

The reasons behind the lack of dental care rooted from several lifestyle factors. Income and health insurance are some of the primary reasons why people opt to not get checked or treated. This is seen among all the races except in Black Americans.

The need for oral health care is important as everyone is susceptible to any dental problems. For children to adult, a different case of dental concern appears over time. This alarms more dental professionals to find more ways in providing treatments for different cases. One of the most reputable dentists, Grant Burdick, DDS, is known to provide excellent preventive oral care for all ages.
