Labeled as the "Last of The Great Railway Stations", the Union Station in Los Angeles was established in 1939 by architects John Parkinson and Donald B. Parkinson.
Study Shows Historic Preservation Contributes to Overall Growth of Country's Economy

Pomona, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/05/2014 -- The rehabilitation, restoration, and preservation of historic residential and commercial buildings all throughout the United States has brought a positive effect on the country's economy according to a study conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). The benefits of bringing old buildings back to life ripples across the economy and through local communities, contributing tens of billions of dollars to the country's economic health. Moreover, the rehabilitation expenses have also created a lot of full and part-time jobs for local residents throughout the country, generating millions of dollars in state and local tax revenues.

These are just a few findings of an economic impact study commissioned by Preservation Virginia, with a grant from Mead Westvaco and support from various departments of historic resources from different states throughout the country. With data provided by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the study makes use of data from 1997 to 2013, working on 16 years of figures, facts, and statistics.

"The cultural benefits of preservation and passing forward our historic legacies are well known," said Elizabeth Kostelny, executive director of Preservation Virginia. "The study confirms that historic preservation also provides profound economic benefits, and it begins with the incentives provided by state and federal tax credits. We commissioned this study to raise awareness that economically historic preservation is a win-win proposition for all individuals, not just preservationists. The study is part of our year-long celebration that examines the role and contributions of historic preservation in the country," she added.

Many historic preservation companies all over the US work hand in hand to contribute to the economic growth brought by restoration and rehabilitation of historical structures. For one, Spectra Company, a historic preservation company based in Los Angeles, California, has committed to protect and preserve the country's most cherished architectural, historic, and cultural landmarks.
"Historic structures enhance our lives by establishing a sense of personal history, while defining the character of our individual communities. Our goal is to revitalize and preserve our heritage for generations to come. Spectra Company is committed to preservation as a viable path to sustainability, and utilizes environmentally safe products in all its preservation and restoration practices," the head of the company shares.

Irvine Ranch Soon to Finish Historical Restoration

Pomona, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/27/2014 -- The Irvine Ranch Historic Park, which was the center of the Irvine family's agriculture dominion, undergoes a staggering $5.8 million budget for historical renovation. The extensive restoration project began in October and is expected to be completed in the year 2015.

Irvine Ranch Historic Park was established by James Irvine in 1860. The ranch has complex buildings which created a benchmark of being the most successful farming operations. Eventually, it was evolved into Irvine Co. It is composed of several buildings including the Mess Hall, Foreman's Row, Early Office, Bathhouse and the Agricultural Headquarters.

The whole renovation is spearheaded by Spectra Co., a well-known name in historical renovation. Ray Adamyk, the president of the Spectra Co., said in a recent interview, "Restoring a building is a balance of preserving the original structure while bringing it to today's standards. Usually when we look at a building, we'll look to see what the character-defining features of the building are, and what the additions were."

When asked about the addition of the back of the two-story mess hall, he simply explained, "It really didn't match the historic period, so that was removed." He added, "Restoration projects should never go too far. You don't ever want to make things completely new because you want to see some of the character of the actual building."

The renovation process includes installing elevators to achieve a more functional building. The in-house artists intricately preserve the wallpaper mural as it has a rich historical story to tell. This also goes to the corrugated metal walls of the old bathhouse. All the relics are carefully preserved to avoid incurring damages.

Although the renovation tasks are accurately done, there is still no specific date as to when it will be completed. Adamyk said, "It's difficult to put dates as to when rooms, appliances, and other features were tacked on throughout the life of the ranch."

The project manager of OC Parks, Marta Crane also announced, "The Irvine Ranch Historic Park is eligible to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. We are under great responsibility to make sure it's preserved. If not listed, at least preserved."

Spectra Co., was given the contract in September and is currently taking on other projects in Orange County. This includes the Fox Theatre locate in Fullerton and the Old Orange Country in Santa Ana.
The New Constance Hotel Soon to Bring Prestige in Pasadena

Pomona, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/24/2014 -- The old Constance Hotel will come out brand new as it is scheduled for a soft opening in December. The historical renovation is just in time for the Rose Bowl Game and the Rose Parade. Upon building code inspection, workers discovered a historical treasure that will contribute to the rich customs of the city.

Robert Ritner, the architect of the $76 million historical renovation, planned to incorporate the historic designs underneath the Thai restaurant and furniture store right after the workers discovered some intricate designs. In a recent interview, he said, "We actually were originally planning to demolish the building back when we were doing the initial design. Then through the course of investigating hazardous material presence to see if anything needed to be a abated, we discovered this cavity behind the existing facade and that's when we called on the historical consultant and we decided to try to salvage the building."

The hotel was established in 1926, so its surfaces eventually wore off. Its facade was damaged over the years. With the use of archival photographs, however, the stone embellishments and other artistic structures can be fully restored.

"Unfortunately, as we are uncovering it, some of it is damaged because in the 50s some guys with hammers decided to knock off any trim that was sticking out to put on the stucco facade, but I believe what is damaged they will be able to adequately repair," Ritner said.

Sue Mossman, the director of Pasadena Heritage also has something to say about this project. "We feared and assumed, as did the city, that when those simplified storefronts were put up they had obliterated anything underneath them, so it was very exciting to find a lot of the original decorative material there."

She added, "It was a modernization idea that was prominent in the 50s and 60s to take these old buildings and make them look modern. "It was probably the most inexpensive solution was to just cover up the fancy stuff with something very simple that looked new and modern."

Constance Hotel will undergo two phases of renovation. The first phase is a scheduled soft opening where fixtures and structures shall be restored. The second phase will have additional 25 rooms, a space, and conference rooms. The whole project is spearheaded by Spectra Company, the expert in historic renovation, preservation and protection. The project is headed by Spectra Company, a recognized name in historical renovation.

The goal of the historical renovation is to create a more active space that will further draw interest to the public. The restoration of the building is budgeted at about $9.5 million. It is expected to improve the building to accommodate more galleries and house programming.

Annette Vartanian, the gallery director said, "We want to have a year of events, programs and installations in the newly remodeled space. My goal is to make the space more hip, to make it a regional destination."

The recital hall was improved by reconstructing its structures to make it more spacious and accessible. This will draw in more public events as the room is combined with great skylight gallery and newly refurbished walls. The recital hall is expected to provide more features so every event is as successful as the over-all design is.

The dining room will be converted to a reading room so more people can be accommodated with all the interesting finds in the historical library.

Also, a solarium is added up to the library's renovation. This will be a symbol of what it was like in the early days of the mansion. It will also house the future exhibits where artists and creative individuals can showcase their talent. It is planned to consolidate the art pieces by sharing a desk for the music and the arts.

Carolyn Flemming, the library services administrator said, "We want to make this as much like a home as possible."

The 109-year-old building is set to be unveiled by recreating the original stencil arts located on the ceiling. During the process of restoration, the unknown artist who made the original stencil was finally discovered. The artist was Giovanni Smeraldi, who also did the works at the Biltmore Hotel, USC Doheny Memorial Library and the Santa Monica Courthouse. This was found out after the in-house artist of Spectra Company noticed the same brush strokes as with the Baltimore Hotel.

"Mrs. Brand boarded it up for some reason. The discovery came as a complete surprise," said Flemming.

The Glendale Historic Brand Library will remain closed until the whole restoration is complete. However, there is a selected potion where the library materials can still be obtained.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Heather Jones
Telephone: 800-375-1771
Email: Click to Email Heather Jones
Web: http://www.spectracompany.com/
