Acquittal of New York Crane and Rigging Owner James Lomma: Should Lives Be at Risk at the Expense of More Profit?

Judge Daniel Conviser’s verdict to clear New York Crane and Rigging owner James Lomma from the charges filed against him concerning a tower crane accident on May 2008 spurred controversies putting further scrutiny in the construction industry.

Spruce Grove, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/29/2014 -- James Lomma, owner of New York Crane and Rigging was cleared of the charges filed against him regarding the collapse of a tower crane on East 91st Street in New York City on May 2008 which took the life of two people. Charges against him and his company included two counts of criminally negligent murder, two counts of second degree homicide, and one count of assault and one of irresponsible endangerment. These charges could have put Lomma in prison for a maximum of 15 years.

The verdict given by Judge Daniel Conviser stirred a lot of controversies putting the construction industry in hot water due to safety practices. Cyrus Vance Jr., District Attorney for New York County expressed his disenchantment with the verdict as he said, this has a causal effect on safety practices in construction.

Investigations conducted by forensic investigators, the collapsed Kodiak tower crane was a result of a failure to have a structural weld in the crane's turntable. Crane operator David Leo, Ramadan Kurtaj died while leaving Simeon Alexis, all construction workers, injured. Contentions were pointing to the crane cab, boom, and other upper sections which fell 200 feet to the street below which caused the death and injuries of the three.

Tibor Varganyi, New York Crane and Rigging Mechanic, testified that the bearings that were used for the crane were bought from a Chinese manufacturer (RTR) who already informed them that the quality of the bearings won't be able to perform the welds required to repair the correct safety standards. But he eventually took the job which resulted to him being charged for criminally negligent homicide. In a close session of the court, Varganyi was spared from being sentenced into prison because of his testimonies.

Judge Conviser's decision left the public wondering if the decision was made out of insufficient proof by the prosecutors or he believed in the counter narrative presented in Lomma's defense. Lomma submitted an explanation delineating that the two-blocking of the crane that might have lead to stresses was the cause of the failure and the swinging ring damages as the result, rather than the cause of the accident.

Construction companies are expected to follow the standards on crane safety to ensure that workers and the people who live or walk by the construction sites are protected. There are a number of safety rules that must be followed in order to prevent accidents in construction sites from happening. Any crane services company must ensure that their workers know what they need to know, all lifting operations are carefully planned and carried out safely with foreseeable risks taken into account, there should always be safe systems of work, correct supervision of lifting, and strict thorough examination of all cranes.

The case of Lomma should serve as a lesson to all heavy lift and crane services companies that the lives of the people should never put to risk at the expense of profit.

Safe Operations of Cranes in Construction: A Must for Every Construction Project

Cranes are designed to assist in construction projects intended to lift, lower, and move materials. Not to claim lives of construction workers. Following the standards on crane safety and inspections requirements must be strictly followed at all times.

Spruce Grove, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/29/2014 -- Last week, a construction crane fell onto a passing car in Indianapolis, Indiana backing up interstate traffic. On May 9, a truck crane broke through the surface of a car park dropping into an underground parking garage in Idaho Falls, Idaho. A day after this incident, in Orlando, Florida, a man died after falling 12 meters from a platform mounted on a boom truck while helping in the installation of a large billboard pole which broke free from the crane holding it.

These are just some of the examples of recent fatal accidents involving cranes. These incidents could have been prevented if everyone in construction sites abide by the law on crane design and safety.

The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 requires that all lifting functions involving hauling of equipment must be properly planned by a skilled person who is appropriately supervised and of course, operated out in a safe manner.

In Britain, construction industry is considered as the biggest sector with over two million people working on construction firms. Which makes it the most hazardous industry to work for as well. According to the Health and Safety Executive, there are more than 2,800 people who dies from injuries due to construction accidents for the past 25 years. Not taking into account the number of people who survived construction accidents but were left injured and ill. This spurred the government of Britain to set British Standards BS 7121 Part 1 2006 delineating the acceptable standard for managing lifting operations with the use of cranes on construction projects. BS 7121 includes codes of practice for construction operations, personnel supervisory, design crane requirements, testing and assessments, and inspection guidelines. Based on investigations from previous accidents involving cranes, the mishandling of cranes due to lack of knowledge and ignorance to the perils and safe working procedures are the major causes of accidents. BSI standards were set to minimize risks and meet the important health and safety requirements of regulations like that of Machinery Directive.

North American Industries Inc., on the other hand, released their own Crane Safety Tips ensuring that every single crane operator and other workers involved in construction projects are protected from the hazards of crane injuries and accidents. Their safety procedures state that crane safety manuals with the rules on crane functions and operation procedures must be reviewed periodically. Checking the hoist every single day before their shifts begin is very important. The load must be checked for damages or twists and the wire ropes must be examined for bends or frayings. The hook must be checked all the time because out of shape hooks are indicators of internal damage. Knowing the lift's rating is imperative as no one should ever try lifting the crane more than the hoist rating. Shock loads must be avoided at all times. The hook must not be run with a slack chain. The chain or the wire must be brought to a rigid position before lifting. This rope or chain must always be in a straight line to avoid any damage to the hoist. While doing the lift, snagging must never be done. And the load must not be jagged. The load must be balanced carefully. In order to keep the balance, always use the right sized sling. The load must always be secured to ensure that nothing can slip out and injure anyone. The lower block must be kept from capsizing so as not to damage the chain or wire rope. Ropes must never be bended over sharp edges.

Save More, Exert Less Effort: Pointers to Remember when Hiring a Crane Service Company

Before commencing on a giant construction project, the first and most important thing to consider apart from having the best and most technologically-advanced tools, equipment and machinery, is the cost. There are a number of crane companies who can provide the best and finest quality of tools and equipment. One should just know how to choose one which will not make a hole in the pocket.

Spruce Grove, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/22/2014 -- It is vital for customers to remember that most of the companies offer a crane service bill depending on the amount of time needed to accomplish the job. Being prepared prior to their arrival on the work site can drastically lessen the amount that one has to pay upon the accomplishment of the job.

It is wise to have an on-site assessment and a quote beforehand. Most crane service companies offer the cost estimate free of charge. Neglecting this very important first step, expect to pay a higher bill. In this case, transportation cost would be an additional expense as there is a need to transport the crane to the site where there no actual concrete work can be performed.

Here are some useful tips to prepare so that one can save more when hiring a crane service company:

Situate the items which need to be lifted in areas that the crane can easily reach. Avoid keeping these items under power lines, trees, or other covered areas. This will lessen the needed time to get the job done.

Make sure that there will be enough parking and set up space prior to the crane's arrival, this will make the setting up of the crane a lot faster. Make it a point to have an area of at least 26 feet in width and 36 feet in length, this is the standard space that a standard boom truck requires.

Come up with a well organized lifting sequence when in need of moving multiple loads with the crane. This way, the crane operator is directed which items to lift - minimizing the crane's idling times. If it will be the crane operator's decision on what will be the lifting sequence, the job will take a longer amount of time as they have to evaluate the site's needs.

When one obliged the crane service company to lift just one large object, it will be of great help if it will be elevated onto a set of blocks so that the crane rigging can be easily attached to the object.

The setting up of the crane and tearing it down may require longer time than the actual lifting job. Lend the operators a hand during the preliminary set up and help them tear it down once they have delivered the service. This will greatly lessen the time.

Compare the figures you get from different crane service companies. It's not bad to ask for a quote from different companies to do the project to ensure that one is being fairly charged. Always remember that quality service comes with a price, and this service should attest that it is money well spent!

Applying the tips above to a reputable crane service company will give a person the best of both worlds – top notch quality service at a lesser price. In the crane service industry, the company with the most experience has always been the most reliable option. A well-established crane service needs to show a lot of important strengths that the customer can rely on, like a wide range of parts inventory and technical support to assure that the job will be properly done.

Heavy Equipment Theft - A New Lucrative Market in the World of Criminals

The captivity of a man from Alberta Canada after police officers seized stolen heavy equipment worth $900,000 is a clear proof that the criminal world has opened a new lucrative market know as equipment theft.

Spruce Grove, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/07/2014 -- Equipment theft is a large and growing problem for companies and businesses operating with the use of heavy construction equipment. It is becoming a lucrative market for criminals with an estimated $1 billion annual lost being incurred nationwide because of stolen heavy haul equipment and other construction tools.

Lojack company, whose business includes tracking of heavy construction equipment, in its Construction Equipment Theft Study, discovered that the most popular types of equipment for thieves are: backhoe loaders / skip loaders / wheel loaders, skid steers, generators / air compressors / welders, light utility / work trucks, forklifts and scissor lifts, and dump trucks. The hot items for thieves are those equipment that are in demand and are easy to re-sell, easy to remove from job sites, smaller and more versatile, and the towables or the "easy pickin's". And not surprisingly, the newer models of these equipment are often stolen than the older ones.

Heavy equipment, most commonly, heavy haul equipment, are typically stolen from job sites. Equipment yards and storage facilities are also being targeted. And the vast majority of equipment thieves successfully operate at night and most likely on weekends.

Thieves were discovered to be either re-selling these equipment to contractors who appear not to suspect that they are being sold stolen tools, or disassembling the equipment and sell the pieces by parts. Once they have successfully stolen the equipment, they then take them to a remote location for a "cooling off" period or are hidden in a garage or warehouse. Some equipment are taken to another job site, while some are kept in a theft ring where the PINs are removed and readied for resale.

Just recently, a man named Jose Fernando Barbosa from Alberta, Canada was sentenced with a two-year imprisonment after pleaded guilty in provincial court for stealing a total of $900,000 worth of heavy equipment. Police were alerted of Barbosa's acts after an owner of a concrete company located their stolen skid steer (using GPS locator) to a fenced compound near 174 Street and 105 Avenue in 2010. The recovery of the said equipment paved the way for the discovery of the many other stolen items in the said location and in other areas.

So how can companies and businesses protect their equipment from equipment theft?

It is a good practice to have detailed records of the equipment. Each equipment should be labeled with unique identifying numbers such as Product Identification Number (PIN), Owner Applied Number (OAN), or mark numbers in multiple locations. An accurate inventory of records would be a big help to track all equipment with the following details: record serial numbers of each major component part, record manufacturer, model number, year, PIN, and purchase date. And most importantly, heavy equipment owners must invest on the physical security of their storage facilities. Having a fence in or park equipment together will deter access to thieves. Communicating with law enforcement and requesting more frequent patrols from them would make it harder for intruders to conduct their "businesses". Other safety measures also include use of immobilization devices like wheel locks, fuel shut-offs, or ignition locks, installing battery-disconnect switches, installing equipment tracking devices for equipment recovery or asset management, and registering the equipment with a national database.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure: Crane Safety Measures to Lessen Overall Construction Cost

The Construction Institute of ASCE provided a crane safety training for engineers and supervisors to ensure a safe environment for their cranes and employees.

Spruce Grove, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/23/2014 -- On Wednesday morning, in 2013, a father was operating a push truck on Deerfoot Trail in the province of Alberta, Canada, as part of a convoy transporting a crane to Jasper. At some point near the 17th Avenue S.E. turnoff, some of the vehicles struck a barrier. The crane, the trailer it was perched on, and the push truck all rolled onto their sides.

The driver was believed, killed on impact.

Cranes are essential tools for many construction projects. All engineers, managers and supervisors must know that accidents like this cost time and money for a number of reasons. To avoid that, they should devise a plan to ensure the safety of their cranes and employees during operation.

Here are some points given to engineers and supervisors by the Construction Institute of ASCE to ensure safety:

Analyze the locations where the contract prohibits crane operations and determined to be hazardous. Devise a method for assuring that these areas are not used for crane operations.

Establish procedures and priorities for the use of the crane. Assure that the employees, subcontractors, crane service providers and other users performing rigging and lifting operations are familiar with proper rigging procedures and that rigging is supervised by knowledgeable, competent people and that these workers have an adequate employee orientation prior to their commencing work. This should be accomplished at on site meetings prior to start of construction, and as deemed necessary.

Assure that crane service providers have satisfactory procedures for the inspection and/or load testing of cranes, both when cranes first arrive on the site and on a periodic basis during the course of construction.

Establish well-defined operational criteria and a means of determining compliance. These criteria should include: the effect of weather, configuration of the crane which may be permitted, movement and transportation of loads and other direct operational uses.

Require each user to submit to the management, for approval, a lift plan for production lifts and the criteria under which these are going to be performed and a separate lift plan for each critical lift.

Establish a procedure for disseminating the plan to all parties involved.

Monitor users to assure that they are following the terms of the Site Safety Plan.

Review the Crane Safety Program of Crane Service Providers.

Prepare the Crane Safety Plan.

Establish a procedure prohibiting on-rubber lifts and/or travel without a permit and a specific crane movement plan.

Confirm that a Lift Director is assigned and identified for each lift.

Studies by The Business Roundtable indicate that reduction of accidents and corresponding accident severity lowers accident costs by as much as 8% in direct construction labor payroll. There's no need to sacrifice people's safety. Remember, prevention is better than cure.

Entrec Releases 2013 Financial Report, Expects Growth Opportunities with Oil Sands

Entrec Expects Growth As Oil Sands Industry Continues To Boom

Spruce Grove, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2014 -- Canada is one of the world's biggest oil reserves in the world, next to the world's first – Saudi Arabia. Alberta is a province located in western Canada, which is rich with a beautiful environment, plentiful natural resources, a strong economy, and a stable political system. There is an estimated 1.7 to 2.5 trillion barrels of bitumen in Alberta's oil sands. Current production rates project that resources from Alberta's oils sands could provide Canada's energy needs for more than 500 years. This is equivalent to the world's needs for up to 15 years.

There is an expectation of over $60 billion of direct capital expenditures into the improvement of the oil sands in the following decade, The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board predict that Alberta's oil sand reserves will become the primary source for Canada's crude oil. Oil sands development helps Canadians by creating employment opportunities, as well as creating royalties and taxes that help compensate for government services and programs.

Entrec announced its 2013 fourth quarter and year-end financial results recently. According to John M. Stevens, Entrec's President and CEO, "in 2013, we continued to make strong progress in positioning ourselves for the future." Stevens affirmed that the the company is now well-positioned to take over a major share of the overall work in growing markets throughout western Canada and in the Bakken region of North Dakota.

He further stated, "this includes Alberta's oil sands, where construction activity is expected to remain strong, and maintenance, repair and operation (MRO) work is expected to grow over the next several years. In addition, our operations are well-positioned to take advantage of liquefied natural gas (LNG) development in northeast B.C., where much of the natural gas is expected to be sourced, and in northwest B.C. where LNG facilities and the connecting pipelines are expected to be constructed in future years. We consider these two industries to be our critical growth drivers over the next decade."

Oil sands industry's demand for Entrec's services is expected to boom as the year progresses. At present, the company is working with oil sands clients on large crane and heavy haul transportation projects which will begin as 2014 advances. Such projects will extend until 2017.

Entrec is extending the amount of long-term MRO contract work it executes in the Alberta oil sands region. The company was granted a five-year MRO contract with a new oil sands client recently, which began in late 2013. The firm persists to cross-sell its crane and heavy haul transportation services to existing and new oils sands clients. Mr. Stevens emphasized, "we believe in situ-related oil sands production will grow at a brisk pace over the next several years as new projects commence and existing facilities are expanded."

Engineered Transport Services Revolutionizing Heavy Lift Service Industry

Heavy haul and heavy lift industry opens up to application of engineering and technology on transport services.

Spruce Grove, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/19/2014 -- A few decades ago, transporting heavy lift equipment was close to impossible. Today, commercial trucks are made very large, powerful and can be configured to mount specialized equipment in various sizes and weight. Handling, transporting and installation of heavy items which are solid and weigh generally a ton to over 1000 tons are challenging for most. Some equipment even stretch up to 100 meters in width making it impossible to fit into containers or conventional trucks. Because of these challenges, technologically advanced picker services were made.

Heavy lift transport requires individual transport planning. It starts with engineered lift studies providing clients with 3D or CAD drawings depicting crane positioning, clearances, radii, rigging, ground breaking pressures and lift procedure to give an overview of the process and its practice. When everything is in place, next plan is the Routing and Feasibility studies. To ensure the items are transported smoothly from the place of origin to its destination, proper routing in line with transport regulations are being inspected and discussed. Wireless load cell system and center of gravity calculations are also made prior to leaving to check if bridges and highways on the route can support the weight of the items. Without reviewing these considerations, specialized transport would be a disaster.

Tools of Trade

Crane is well recommended vertical lift of overweight load as well as transporting to a considerable distance. Lifting capacity of cranes ranges from a single ton to 500 tons. It is usually used in industries including mining, oil sands, petro chemical, pulp and paper, forestry, infrastructure, hydro-electric and wind power that require such machines on their day to day routines. Cranes have different types; all-terrain, rough-terrain, crawlers, hydraulic truck mounted and picker trucks.

Crawler crane has lifting capacity from about 40 to 3,500 tons and is mostly used on the job site. Because of its heavy load, moving around the site will be challenging. It is often disassembled and moved from one location to the other using trucks. All terrain and rough terrain cranes are mostly used on job sites for easy lifting and transportation of overload equipment on various environmental settings. It can be used on site and can endure rough grounds. Hydraulic truck mounted type is mostly used for easy transport of items on roads or highway without special permits. A picker truck does the same but is used in transporting loads to location with very large distances.

With these technological advancements and application of general science, moving mountains becomes easier and cost-efficient for everyone.

Finding the Right Career That Fits You

When you were little, people probably asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Maybe you said a firefighter, or an astronaut. Maybe you said an actor, or a lawyer, or a doctor.

Spruce Grove, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/18/2014 -- Then, a career seemed like something that would happen a lifetime away. But now that the time has come to choose, your interests have probably changed. Finding the right career and being part of a company that can provide both the needs and want of an individual is like chasing a needle in the heap of hay.

Obtaining the right career is to think carefully what really drives you. The foundation of getting the right job is to discover the primary interest and passion. Exploring career opportunities will open a door to the right path. Analyzing ambition and overcoming obstacles is also one way of finding the true satisfaction and happiness towards work. And lastly look into what jobs provide similar feelings and experiences.

Heidi Grant Halvorson wrote in one of her articles "The Surprising Key to Finding the Right Job for You" We all want to choose a career that will make us happy, but how can we know what that will be? Research suggests that human beings are remarkably bad at predicting how they will feel when doing something in the future. It's not hard to find someone who started out thinking that they would love their chosen profession, only to wind up hating it.

Developing skills and experience is also one big factor in finding the right career. If chosen career requires skills and experience you lack, don't despair. There are many ways to gain needed skills. Utilizing the current position by looking for an opportunity to do projects that develop new skills. Or take some classes, there are some fields require specific education or skills, such as an educational degree or specific training. Finding the right career is a matter of choice whether it is your interest and skills.

How are you supposed to know if you will be happy in a <a href"">journeyman mechanic jobs, or <a href"">journeyman operator jobs, or in <a href"">crane operator jobs, if you haven't actually done any of these things yet? Who has ever, in the history of mankind, taken a job and had it turn out exactly as they imagined it would? Well, find a company that offers the best training.

Finding Safe Modern Hydraulic Platform Trailers

Spruce Grove, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/17/2014 -- Taking care of the goods sending to another location is essential. The success of shipping goods using heavy equipment trailers depends highly on choosing a company that has experience in this field.
The company should know the features and limitations of the route, laws about heavy truck transportation and weight limitation. The weight limitation, to a great extent, depends on the cargo dimensions and the daily traffic effects. There are many transportation companies available everywhere.
Special permits are required to transport heavy equipment goods. This includes a highway permit and a police permit. Another thing to consider is the experience of the company. Only a transportation company with better experience very well knows the regulations and rules associated with the areas through which their vehicles will move. Furthermore, the safety of the products should also take into consideration and features the professionalism to avoid potential logistical and traffic pitfalls. Only a company that can handle diverse products can meet all these requirements. The proficiency of a company to pick up the goods on the road is also an important factor to consider. There are shipping companies that manages a wide network of drivers to pick up products from any location. This will help to deliver the products at the doorsteps of customer or company in the shortest doable time.

And one thing to scrutinize is the proper awareness on each trailer to choose and its specifications.
Stevens replaced Rod Martin as CEO as Martin transitioned to be the company's Executive Chairman. The change in the organizational structure is coupled with a C$46 million capital expenditure program dedicated primarily on mounting its mobile crane competencies. "We believe continued investment in this area will increase our access to the recurring onsite maintenance, repair and operation support work in the Alberta oil sands region," Stevens said in a statement.

Entrec has one of North America's largest fleet of hydraulic platform trailers. The result was a success using 691,200 lbs. of counterweight, 220 feet of boom at an 80 foot set radius and a total lift weight of 237,355 lbs. The study proved the company's capacity of resolving complex and extensive lift challenges.

Overall, Entrec has a fleet of over 160 cranes which includes all-terrain, rough-terrain, crawlers, hydraulic truck mounted and picker trucks.
