About Project Sanctuary
Founded in 2007, Project Sanctuary focuses on strengthening military families during the stressful times of deployment, transition and reintegration, offering retreats nationwide. In 2018, the organization will offer 30 retreats to serve military families and will also continue outreach to the 2,200 families on its wait list to provide pre-retreat assessment and crisis intervention. Project Sanctuary uses the A.R.T. model – Assess (pre-retreat support services), Reconnect (six-day therapeutic retreat for the whole family), and Thrive (two years of follow-up services). The program is unique in its treatment of the family as a unit while also working with each family member individually to assess their needs. The overall goal is easing the reconnection of families previously distanced as a result of deployment and military service, including resultant injuries.

Project Sanctuary holds a 4-star rating on Charity Navigator, the GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency, and Better Business Bureau Charity Accreditation.
Project Sanctuary Receives Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar, Renewed Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator

Granby, CO -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/18/2017 -- Project Sanctuary, a non-profit providing therapeutic retreats for military families, has received high marks from two organizations that help guide non-profit giving. GuideStar has awarded the organization its Platinum Seal of Transparency for participating in a new program that asks non-profits to share their quantitative program results. Charity Navigator has also renewed Project Sanctuary's four-star rating.

"We work hard every day to show that we are 100 percent committed to fulfilling our mission. This recognition helps strengthen our credibility in that effort and provides donors with greater confidence in their support of our organization," said Project Sanctuary founder Heather Ehle.

Platinum is the highest level of recognition from GuideStar, which serves as a clearinghouse of non-profit information. Non-profits in the Platinum program demonstrate that they are focused on measuring progress and results, giving potential donors access to the information they crave most. The metrics provided by participating non-profits also provide a concrete alternative to donors who may be evaluating an organization based solely on its overhead ratio.

Charity Navigator, which evaluates more than 1 million non-profits nationwide, first awarded Project Sanctuary a four-star rating last year and recently renewed that rating. The four-star rating is reserved for organizations that exceed industry standards and outperform most charities dedicated to a similar cause. Charity Navigator's ratings are based on a variety of metrics examining financial performance, accountability and transparency.

Project Sanctuary allocates 87 percent of its expenses to programs and services, and spends just 5.8 percent of its budget on administrative expenses. The organization also has independent voting board members who are not compensated for their service.

Founded in 2007, Project Sanctuary is marking several milestones on its 10th anniversary. Over the last decade, the organization has hosted more than 1,000 families (comprised of over 4,000 individuals) at more than 120 retreats in seven states. Ninety percent of the families served by Project Sanctuary are still intact, and 2,000 families are now on the organization's retreat waitlist.

Project Sanctuary Earns Coveted 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator

Rare Highest Rating Comes as Part of Organization’s First Review

Granby, CO -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/02/2016 -- Project Sanctuary's strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a 4-star rating with an overall score of 97.17 from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent charity evaluator. 2016 marked the first time that Project Sanctuary was reviewed by Charity Navigator. Receiving the top distinction within the first year of review marks a tremendous milestone for the Colorado-based, national nonprofit.

Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These Accountability & Transparency metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity's overall rating, reveal which charities operate in accordance with industry best practices and whether they are open with their donors and stakeholders. On June 1, 2016, Charity Navigator upgraded its methodology for rating each charity's' financial health with CN 2.1. These enhancements further substantiate the financial health of Charity Navigator's four-star charities.

"Project Sanctuary's exceptional 4-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public," according to Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator. "Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our 4-star rating. This adds Project Sanctuary to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world's most pressing challenges. Based on its 4-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support Project Sanctuary."

"It's important our donors trust that we're using their donations wisely in taking military families from battle ready to family ready," said Heather Ehle, Project Sanctuary founder and CEO. "Our 4-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters our good governance and financial accountability."

Special Veterans Day Episode of TD Jakes Show to Focus on Military Heroes and Giving Back, Features Project Sanctuary, Other Veteran-Serving Organizations

After Tumultous Election Week, Veterans Day Show Shifts Focus to Service and Selflessness

Granby, CO -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/10/2016 -- Now that the election is over, as popular daytime talk show host T.D. Jakes posted this week on Facebook, "the healing and unity must begin." Veterans Day provides the perfect opportunity to do just that, shifting the focus from politics to service, selflessness and patriotism. Project Sanctuary is excited to announce that it is one of the organizations to be featured in the special "Military Heroes" episode of the T.D. Jakes Show this Veterans Day, Friday, November 11.

Friday's show will honor our veterans and their families, recognizing the sacrifices they have made. Having served over 800 military families from all over the U.S., Project Sanctuary understands the struggles our veterans and their families face when they come home. Our two-year program is designed to help the families overcome those difficulties and learn to thrive again.

Highlighted on Friday's show will be the story of the Soto family, a military veteran family in crisis who reached out to Project Sanctuary in August, applying to the program and asking for help. Jose Soto didn't realize he had PTS (post-traumatic stress) or TBI (traumatic brain injury) after his last deployment. He just knew that he was struggling to keep his family connected and to manage the physical injuries he acquired during combat. The Soto family entered Project Sanctuary's program in October and share their story of healing and hope.

"The stories and struggles of veterans and their families are more than sound bites during election season," said Heather Ehle, Project Sanctuary founder and CEO. "These are real people who are hurting and struggling. Project Sanctuary is here to support them and give them the tools to thrive in the country they served—so they never feel forgotten. We thank and applaud T.D. Jakes for using his voice on their behalf."

Military Family-Focused Nonprofit Reaches Huge Milestone

Elected Officials and Media Take Notice of Project Sanctuary’s 100th Retreat in New York

Granby, CO -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/28/2016 -- This month, Colorado-based national nonprofit Project Sanctuary joined forces with Beaver Hollow Conference Center, home of the Biggest Loser Resort Niagara in Java Center, New York, for an unforgettable celebration of its 100th retreat for military families. Since being founded in September 2007, Project Sanctuary has served over 800 military families, welcoming another ten families to its two-year program at Retreat #100 in New York.

The milestone celebration was filled with fanfare, including accolades from local and regional elected officials. A.D. Berwanger, chairman of the Wyoming County Board of Supervisors, presented Project Sanctuary founder and CEO Heather Ehle with a Chairman's Proclamation, declaring September 6, 2016, "Project Sanctuary Day." Congressman Chris Collins' office also presented an official U.S. House of Representatives Certificate of Commendation in recognition of the 100th military family retreat.

The real highlights of the event came from the military families themselves – both the new program participants and the alumni families in attendance –as they shared their stories and their successes. For the families, Retreat #100 culminated in a family triathlon with the families all working as a unit to cross the finish line together, a powerful metaphor for the reconnection achieved through the retreat. (See video of the finish on YouTube.)

"Right now, 22 veterans are committing suicide every day," said Heather Ehle. "Of the more than 3,000 individuals we've served through our program, we've only lost one to suicide and 90% of our families are still together. So many organizations focus on just the veteran, while back at home their kids and spouse are still in chaos. If you break the groove and focus on the whole family and have couples go through marriage, financial and PTSD classes together, then when they get home, they can support each other."

With 1,800 military families currently on Project Sanctuary's wait list, supporting current and future participants remains a critical mission. In recognition of the 100th family retreat, Project Sanctuary has launched the "Give Hope, Give100" campaign. Individuals and businesses interested in providing healing, hope and empowerment to our service members and their families may support the campaign with a gift of $100 or more online at www.projectsanctuary.us or by mail to Project Sanctuary, P.O. Box 1563, Granby, CO 80446.

Project Sanctuary Welcomes New Team Member

New Chief Development Officer to Assist in Expanding Military Family Retreat Offerings

Granby, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/13/2015 -- Project Sanctuary welcomed Kara Pappas to its leadership team this month as the new chief development officer (CDO). The CDO is responsible for forging new partnerships and sponsorships to build the visibility, impact, and financial resources of Project Sanctuary as we work to eliminate our waitlist of 1,800 military families.

Kara's experience includes over nine years of managing nonprofit development initiatives and more than 14 years serving as a military spouse. Before joining Project Sanctuary, Kara was the Director of Development at Longmont Humane Society and managed development programming for Larimer Humane Society. In these roles, she managed fund development, community relations programming and annual giving campaigns—all with a focus on how best to serve her donors and community.

"Kara has the perfect combination of experience, energy and passion that will help Project Sanctuary grow into the future," said Heather Ehle, founder and chief executive officer of Project Sanctuary. "As more military families face reintegration and increased deployments, the need for programs like ours increases—which we've seen firsthand with our constantly growing waitlist. We know Kara is the right person to help us meet these increased needs. She also brings a unique perspective as the military spouse of an active member of the National Guard because she has lived through multiple deployments and understands what the families we serve go through. Her personal and professional experience will be a valuable asset to us."

"As a military spouse, I understand the costs our families pay as a result of prolonged separation. I am grateful to join Project Sanctuary's team and become part of the solution: supporting post-deployment healing by fully embracing every member of the household," said Kara.

Kara holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Technical Communication from Colorado State University and will complete a Master of Nonprofit Management degree through Regis University in October 2015.

Second year of partnership provides funding to help military families reconnect and thrive

Granby, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/28/2015 -- Project Sanctuary announced a renewed partnership with Operation Hat Trick (OHT) today to support the healing and recovery of military families. OHT is making a $9,000 donation to Project Sanctuary, covering all costs for three military families to participate in Project Sanctuary's two-year program, beginning with a 6-day retreat. By focusing on mental health first, Project Sanctuary uses outdoor recreation therapy to facilitate healing for military families, enabling them to reconnect and thrive. Many of the participating families are dealing with PTS (post-traumatic stress), possible divorce and ongoing turmoil due to their visible or invisible wounds.

"We are honored by the continuation of the partnership with Dot Sheehan and Operation Hat Trick and are excited to enter a second year of collaboration," said Heather Ehle, founder and CEO of Project Sanctuary. "This renewed support demonstrates the enduring nature of our partnership and will help Project Sanctuary serve families who desperately need our programming to keep their families intact and ensure their success in the future. Operation Hat Trick's focus on addressing the visible and invisible wounds of war among service members and veterans is in perfect alignment with our two-year comprehensive program."

"After witnessing the impact of our initial partnership with Project Sanctuary, Operation Hat Trick chose to increase our support for one additional family," said Dot Sheehan, founder and president of OHT. "Project Sanctuary is the type of impactful organization we look to work with as it aligns very well with our mission. Operation Hat Trick is honored to be associated with an organization that supports the recovery of wounded service members and veterans."

Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Industry Donates over $53,000 to Support Military Families

3-year partnership with Project Sanctuary helps military families heal

Denver, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/03/2014 -- The 3rd Annual Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Poker Classic, benefiting Project Sanctuary this past November, was another record breaker. The event generated over $24,500 in donations to Project Sanctuary—bringing the three-year total to $53,000 for services to our military families. The donations support Project Sanctuary's six-day retreats, which help military families go from battle ready to family ready.

Project Sanctuary's retreats bring military families together in therapeutic outdoor settings so they can reconnect and heal. Some of the families are dealing with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), possible divorce and ongoing turmoil due to their visible and/or invisible wounds. With plenty of recreation and family time built in, the retreats bring the smiles back to the faces of the family members while also providing valuable classes on healthy marriages, financial success and much more.

"We are extremely grateful to the Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas industry for their ongoing support of military families over the past three years," said Heather Ehle, founder and executive director of Project Sanctuary. "The Poker Classic has turned into a fun event with an important purpose. Each year, a few of our Project Sanctuary military families are invited to join in the fun. Our families are blown away both by the generosity and the genuine thoughtfulness of the oil and gas industry attendees. The industry's support helps families who desperately need our retreats to save their families and to equip them for a successful future."

"The Oil and Gas Industry of the Rocky Mountain Region is proud to support our service men and women and their families through our annual fundraising poker event," said Jess Peonio, Axia Energy, Event Organizer. "Project Sanctuary was selected as our primary beneficiary for many reasons: the local oil and gas industry's support of our service men and women, the fact that our contribution would be meaningful, and that Project Sanctuary provides transition services for the entire family as we appreciate that the entire family serves. The event and fundraising would not be possible without the generous participants and sponsors throughout our industry."

Operation Hat Trick Partners with Project Sanctuary to Help Military Families Heal

Partnership provides funding and a valuable strategic alliance

Denver, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/09/2014 -- Project Sanctuary announced a new partnership with Operation Hat Trick (OHT) today to support the healing and recovery of military families. OHT is making a $6,000 donation to Project Sanctuary, covering all costs for two military families to attend Retreat #60, from October 10-15. Project Sanctuary's retreats bring military families together in an outdoor environment so they can reconnect and heal. Many of the families attending Project Sanctuary retreats are dealing with PTS (post-traumatic stress), possible divorce and ongoing turmoil due to their visible or invisible wounds. The retreats heal families, bringing smiles back to their faces and providing valuable classes on healthy marriage, financial success and much more.

"We are grateful to Dot Sheehan and Operation Hat Trick for their donation and excited about this ongoing relationship focused on helping military families," said Heather Ehle, founder and CEO of Project Sanctuary. "This donation is extremely valuable to us because it will enable two military families to attend our retreat at no cost. It covers all of their accommodations, food, activities and classes for six days. Most importantly, these families desperately need this retreat to keep their families intact and ensure their success in the future. Operation Hat Trick's focus on addressing the visible and invisible wounds of war among service members and veterans is in perfect alignment with our two-year comprehensive program at Project Sanctuary."

"Operation Hat Trick is excited to form a partnership with Project Sanctuary. It is just the kind of organization we look for as it aligns with our mission," said Dot Sheehan, founder and president of OHT. "Those who are part of the OHT 'family' and have adopted OHT include 240 colleges and universities nationwide, pro and minor league teams, retailers, and corporations as well as the beginnings of a new international division, so we are covering a lot of bases and are able to help those with great need. We know that those recovering from unthinkable visible and invisible injuries respond and recover so much better if they are involved in programs like Project Sanctuary. OHT looks forward to a long, successful partnership."
- Serve as a nationally recognized alliance of service providers promoting Standards of Excellence to regulate recreation service provision to Our Military Family nationwide.
- Provide information sharing systems, facilitating communication between service providers necessary for a collaborative Continuum of Care needed for the highest quality of service provision.
- Establish Education and Training guidelines to facilitate the distribution of shared experience and knowledge across the service providers.
- Enhance funding and Economic Viability through creative private sector fundraising initiatives and private and public grant writing applications.
"The enthusiasm that programs like Project Sanctuary bring to R4 Alliance has been very encouraging. Our collective experience and combined knowledge grows with every program of excellence we bring on board." said Bert Gillette, Director of Programs and Outreach for R4.
Project Sanctuary and Undaunted Apparel Announce Partnership as Part of National Military Appreciation Month

40% of sales of co-branded shirt to be donated to Project Sanctuary

Denver, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/23/2014 -- Project Sanctuary, the impact organization that takes military families from battle-ready to family-ready through outdoor, therapeutic retreats, today announced a new partnership with Undaunted Apparel to support the stability and strength of military families. Undaunted Apparel, whose company mantra is "Wear What Matters," is committed to donating 10% of all profits to a military beneficiary and has agreed to streamline their previous assortment of military charities in order to focus on a single, results-oriented partner: Project Sanctuary.

Undaunted Apparel will begin as a Contributing Sponsor with two special initiatives that will contribute to Project Sanctuary's mission to serve military and veteran families. First, Undaunted Apparel will donate $10 to Project Sanctuary for every co-branded shirt sold online. Second, Undaunted Apparel will launch a unique, co-branded item from their repertoire each fiscal quarter with a similar contribution to Project Sanctuary.

"We are excited to partner with an organization founded on the principle of giving back to the military community," said Heather Ehle, Project Sanctuary founder and CEO. "Undaunted Apparel's tagline of 'Wear What Matters' resonates with our mission of doing what matters to serve our military families. This partnership is the beginning of an enduring financial commitment to military families and offers a creative way to engage our followers with uniquely designed clothing and apparel."

The relationship was solidified during Project Sanctuary Retreat #48 at the National Ability Center in Park City, UT.

"For so long we have looked and searched for a military beneficiary that truly supports the men and women who have fought for our freedom we enjoy every day," said Corey Trimmer, CEO of Undaunted Apparel. "But what won us over was the family structure that Project Sanctuary provides in their service to the community. National Military Appreciation Month seems the perfect time for Undaunted Apparel to proudly announce our long-term commitment to recognize and honor our military service members, veterans and their families."

The next Project Sanctuary retreat is scheduled to begin on Friday, June 6, 2014. Pre-order, online sales of the co-branded shirt began today and continue through June 15, 2014.
About Undaunted Apparel
Undaunted by definition means "not discouraged or disheartened; resolutely courageous." This definition for many applies to more than just military; it is a way of life – what your life and what your trial and tribulations may be for you to conquer. Undaunted Apparel was started by patriotic individuals who understand that our security and freedoms are a direct result of the men and women serving in our armed forces. We are inspired by those Americans who put their lives in the line of fire to protect those ideals which we hold most dear: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Our artwork reflects our true heroes and the sacrifices they and their families continue to make on our behalf.

Two Texas-Based Veterans Elected to Project Sanctuary Board

Addition of Members Part of Project Sanctuary Growth Strategy

Granby, CO -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/20/2014 -- Project Sanctuary took the next step in preparing for projected growth in retreat offerings for military families, electing two new members to its Board of Directors. Joseph "Joe" Morrin and Lt. Col. (Dr.) David Tharp will each serve two-year terms.

"Project Sanctuary is thrilled with the addition of more than just two new board members," said Heather Ehle, founder and CEO. "Joe and David are two incredible men who bring vast talents to our team, along with passion and vision to help Project Sanctuary take the next necessary steps to continue our pattern of growth so that we can serve more military families."

Joe Morrin is Senior Vice President, Financial Planning for First Command Financial Services in Fort Worth, TX, responsible for the underlying planning philosophy of the company. In addition to financial planning, his responsibilities include oversight of First Command Tax Services and First Command's property and casualty insurance agency. In addition, Joe serves on the boards of First Command Life Insurance Company and First Command Financial Planning, subsidiaries of First Command Financial Services. Prior to joining First Command, he spent several years in the United States Army, attaining the rank of captain.

Joe and his family, wife Dana and son Colby, were active with Project Sanctuary prior to Joe's election to the Board of Directors. The most recent Project Sanctuary retreat marked the third time they have volunteered.

"I am excited for the opportunity to serve in such a worthwhile organization," said Joe. "I can think of no group more deserving of our service and attention than our veterans returning home from deployment. I look forward to working with Heather Ehle and her staff, along with the Board of Directors. Project Sanctuary makes a real difference in the lives of our military members and their families."

Lt. Col. (Dr.) David Tharp is a licensed psychologist for both the Veterans Administration (VA) and the United States Air Force. As a VA psychologist, David works for the VA VISN 17 Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans located at the VA hospital in Waco, TX, helping facilitate research for those who have suffered both from PTSD and TBI. In the Air Force, David works at the Air Force Academy as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee, helping cadets navigate their future and career as an Air Force officer.

In October 2010, David deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where he "triple hatted" as the Medical Advisor, Preventative Medicine Expert, and Environmental Engineer to the Commander, Kandahar Airfield (COMKAF). While serving in this capacity, he managed 28 countries' medical assets, was the Army's lead consultant on psychological issues, coordinated the first MRI into theater, and was a liaison to the commander of the Role 3 (trauma hospital). David received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his service in a combat zone.

He also won the 2012 Air Force Veterans Administration Employee of the Year Award and is an assistant professor at Texas A&M, Health Sciences Center, College of Medicine.

David and his family are intimately familiar with Project Sanctuary, having attended a retreat in the summer of 2013.

"I can think of no greater honor or privilege than to serve those who have served our great nation, through Project Sanctuary," said David. "This national award winning, not-for profit organization facilitates the family reintegration process in a way that exceeded our family's expectations. Project Sanctuary's holistic focus on physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial needs helps military families reconnect and grow in so many ways. I feel a deep sense of responsibility as a board member with Project Sanctuary to be entrusted with our nation's greatest asset – the military family. One leaves the healing environment of Project Sanctuary retreats with tools, resources, friendships and connections that will last a lifetime!"
