Utilitarian Trend; a Practical Clothing Investment

Athens, Greece -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/27/2014 -- Practicality and functionality strike a chord whenever utilitarian is being discussed. Pairing functionality and aesthetic in the haute couture industry appears to be inconceivable as of not long ago. More and more designers now are infusing utilitarian theme into their collection and been receiving positive reception from Fashion Magazine Editors as something promising rather than plain and boring.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2014 debuted a collection of utilitarian inspired collection. From Chunky sweaters, puffy coats, flat-soled boots, water bottle holders, key holders and belt bags, militant wear comes full circle. The concept isn't new however; blame it to the recent decade's rough economy or the waste-not-need not attitude of the environmentalist movement, yet we've seen a surge in designers' yearning for pared-down, excellent outlines that are unfussy adding more details and greater practicality.

Among notable collection are from designer Alexander Wang who made a statement in creating utilitarian accessories. Dubbed as the "accessories coat", these items ranging from water bottle holders, belt bags, key holders, ping pong paddle bags. usb carriers,to shoes, all are standouts when paired with a favorite coat.

Coat also made a resurrection in militant image this fall. Designer Ralph Rucci reinvented the traditional coat with Nappa leather lined with Barguzin sable. Volume also played an important role on the coats reinvention with designer Tim Coppens incorporating quilts and puffy layers. Mr. Coppens utilized ripstop nylon for pockets and included details like plaid flannel lining under a suit jacket's collar while other designs from Alexander Wang, Thakoon and Opening Ceremony stayed true to utilitarian's hunting and hiking consumptions. Peter Som, Jason Wu, Marc by Marc Jacobs included tailored coats with patterned materials, embellishments and plaid overload. Notable features include cargo pockets, shirt and Nehru collars, top stitching, press studs, zippers, epaulettes and tabbed sleeves.

"If someone is looking to make an investment for next fall, it would be a great coat with special details," says Sheila Aimette, North American vice president for trend forecaster WGSN. These coats are so versatile you can pair it with gladiator sandals for the summer or boots for the autumn. Because of its simpler silhouette and durability it can last a couple of seasons if not years.

Though Utilitarian style may seem too tough to some, it could be effortlessly toned down by blending and matching it with unobtrusive outline, feminine shades and eminent details.
