Preparing for Holiday Sleep Challenges: Insights and Tips from the Baby Sleep Site

Columbus, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/16/2015 -- With the holidays fast-approaching, many families are beginning to firm up holiday travel plans. But as Nicole Johnson of The Baby Sleep Site® points out, all of that holiday traveling and celebrating can have a huge impact on sleep. "Nap and bedtime schedules tend to go haywire over the holidays," says Johnson, "and we see a significant uptick in visitors to our site, who are looking for help getting sleep back on track after the holiday festivities are done."

But parents can do some prep work before the holidays, says Johnson — prep work that can help to prevent sleep drama and keep naps and bedtime on track. When it comes to managing sleep during traveling, Johnson offers the following tips:

- Try to travel in the afternoon. "The morning nap is the most restorative," explains Johnson, "so it's best if it happens at home, in your child's usual sleeping area instead of on the road or in an airplane."

- Bring familiar "sleepy" objects along with you when traveling. "By bringing your child's usual sheets, favorite PJs, and lovey, you'll make an unfamiliar sleeping area more restful and sleep-inducing," says Johnson. She also recommends bringing along a white noise machine and some portable room-darkening shades in case the home you're visiting is too bright or noisy for your child to sleep comfortably.

- Offer an earlier bedtime if traveling and celebrating result in missed naps. "If your child skips naps or has unusually short naps over the holidays, bump bedtime up in order to prevent over tiredness," Johnson recommends. "Over tiredness can mean night waking and earlier-than-usual morning waking."

- A few late bedtimes may be fine, but avoid too many in a row. "You don't need to say 'no' to every evening holiday party," explains Johnson, "but too many late nights can wreak havoc on even the best sleeper's usual sleeping patterns." Instead, Johnson recommends that you keep late bedtimes to a minimum as best you can.

- After the New Year, allow several days for your child to adjust back his usual sleeping schedule. "Those few days will feel really off, most likely," says Johnson. "But spending a bit of concentrated time in order to get sleep back on track will pay off in the long run - within a matter of days, everyone will be back to normal."

How to Keep "Falling Back" from Destroying Your Child's Sleep Schedule

Insights and Tips From The Baby Sleep Site

Columbus, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/16/2015 -- With the end of Daylight Saving Time right around the corner, many parents are beginning to wonder how "falling back" will affect their children's sleep schedules. Sleep expert Nicole Johnson has spent years helping families prepare for the time change every fall, and has a long list of tips and recommendations for how to survive the time change.

The main thing to remember, according to Johnson, is that your child's internal clock won't be changing with your household clocks! "Our circadian rhythms are very predictable and reliable," says Johnson, "and they don't automatically follow daylight saving time changes." That's why, if your child customarily goes to bed at 7 p.m., he may seem sleepy and ready to hit the sack at 6 p.m. after the time change. Explains Johnson, "For that child, 6 p.m. feels like 7 p.m., and therefore like bedtime, because it WAS 7 p.m. the night before!"

As a result, the end of daylight saving can cause even the best and most dependable sleepers to start waking way early, and can lead to crankiness and overtiredness. While a select few parents may actually welcome having their children's schedule shifted backwards by an hour, most parents cringe at the thought of their little ones waking a whole hour earlier.

According to Johnson, that's why some prep work is necessary. "If you start early and plan ahead, you can actually shift your child's schedule ahead of time, in such a way that 'falling back' won't ruin your usual sleep schedule," says Johnson. If you like your baby's current schedule, you can prepare for the time change by moving everything ahead gradually: for example, if your baby normally goes to bed at 7 p.m., put him to put 15 minutes later each night for several nights, until he's going to bed closer to 8 p.m. (you'll want to shift naps and wake-up times ahead, too). Then, the time change will bump everything back to the usual schedule and you'll be all set!

If your baby is waking too early, however, that can be very tricky indeed, as the time change will make the wake-up call even earlier. "I usually suggest that you shift the schedule forward in this case, towards your desired wake-up time." For example, if your child is waking at 5 a.m., work gradually towards a 6 a.m. wake-up time. After the time change, you'll be back to a 5 a.m. wake-up call, and once the time change is done, you can work towards 6 a.m. again.

"I know it sounds like a lot of work for something as routine as 'falling back'," says Johnson. "And honestly, some families don't need to do this; if your child adapts well to change, you can simply do nothing and trust that in a few days, everyone will adjust." However, Johnson points out that in some cases, not doing anything to prepare for the time change can make an existing early-waking problem much, much worse.

Parents Can "Spring" Into Better Sleep This Season, Thanks to Big Discounts from the Baby Sleep Site

Columbus, OH -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/10/2015 -- Spring is the season for starting fresh - and that includes "starting fresh" with baby and toddler sleep schedules! Parents everywhere struggle with challenging sleep issues that result in chronic exhaustion, health problems, lagging work and school performance, and more. Fortunately, Nicole Johnson of The Baby Sleep Site® - the web's leading resource for exhausted parents of babies and toddlers - is helping parents worldwide conquer their sleep challenges once and for all with her Spring Sleep Sale. Tired families can enjoy up to 20% off all sleep products and services (including e-books, site memberships, and their incredibly popular personalized consulting packages), for a limited time.

According to Johnson, most families see huge improvements in their children's sleep challenges after using The Baby Sleep Site®'s personalized sleep consulting system. "We have 11 trained sleep consultants on staff, myself included, who work one-on-one with parents to conquer sleep challenges." At the heart of this personalized consulting is the Personalized Sleep Plan™. "The Personalized Sleep Plans™ that we create for each family are essentially step-by-step guides that identify sleep challenges and sleep goals, and then give parents a day-by-day plan for resolving sleep problems." It's the personalize nature of the consultation system that makes it so effective, according to Johnson. "In my experience," says Johnson, "most parents have tried solving their children's sleep issues on their own, but without success. It really helps to have an objective and compassionate expert explaining what to do next, and helping you deal with setbacks that arise."

The Baby Sleep Site® is also offering big discounts on their array of do-it-yourself sleep coaching resources, including their brand-new Express Sleep Plan™. The Express Sleep™ is revolutionary, explains, Johnson - parents simply complete a brief survey, submit their answers, and receive a customized sleep coaching plan instantly. "This makes the Express Sleep Plan™ ideal for parents who want a more customized resource, but who feel comfortable implementing the plan on their own, without help from a consultant," says Johnson. "It's one of our most budget-friendly sleep resources, and since it's downloadable immediately, it's perfect for parents who want sleep help right away."

The most comprehensive sleep coaching resource, though, according to Johnson, is their Members Area. "The Baby Sleep Site® Member's Area is a virtual library that's full of exclusive articles, e-books, recorded seminars, case studies, and printable materials. It's basically a do-it-yourself parent's dream!"

Says Johnson, "Regardless of how parents use The Baby Sleep Site® to solve their children's sleep challenges, it's important to remember that spring is a GREAT season to work on your child sleep challenges! Most of us want to enjoy a relaxing, fun-filled summer vacation with our families, but that's hard to achieve if you're so sleep-deprived you can't see straight. It's my hope that parents will take advantage of these fantastic deals to "start fresh", and to help their children build new, healthy sleep habits this spring."

The Baby Sleep Site Launches Groundbreaking Online Sleep Product

New Express Sleep Plan™ gives parents immediate access to customized sleep help.

Columbus, OH -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/26/2015 -- The Baby Sleep Site, the web's leading resource for exhausted parents of sleepless babies and toddlers, is pleased to announce the launch of its revolutionary new product: The Express Sleep Plan™. The product now offers a completely new approach to sleep coaching, giving parents access to their own, customized sleep coaching plan by simply completing an online survey developed based on the extensive experience of The Baby Sleep Site's sleep team.

"This is huge," says Nicole Johnson, Founder and Lead Sleep Consultant at The Baby Sleep Site. "For years now, we have offered personalized sleep coaching plans, created by hand by our team of sleep consultants, but there is obviously some wait-time and cost involved in developing them." That wait is over. Thanks to the new Express Sleep Plan™ parents can literally purchase their plan at 2 a.m. and have it in their hands within minutes.

And having a customized, tailored plan can make all the difference. "There are thousands of baby sleep books out there today - we sell a few ourselves! For years, this is what's made The Baby Sleep Site's personalized consulting services so popular - and it's the reason why The Express Sleep Plan™ is expected to be incredibly successful.

"Exhausted parents don't want to wade through stacks of book," explains Johnson. "And even if they can summon the energy to do so, many of them are still confused as to how to turn that information into an actionable plan. That's where we come in." And now, thanks to The Express Sleep Plan™, the process of getting a sleep-coaching plan is easier than ever.

As a fully automated tool, the Express Sleep Plan™ also comes at a lower price point than any other personalized sleep help. This means that virtually ALL parents, regardless of income, now have access to customized sleep coaching help. "That was vital to me, in designing this new program," emphasizes Johnson. "So many sleep consulting programs are cost-prohibitive; my team and I felt it was vital that we offer customized help at a price that just about everyone can afford."
Baby Shusher™ Founder Chad Zunker agrees: "The new Baby Sleep Site® App puts The Baby Sleep Site®'s genius on full display in a condensed version that is well-designed and is easy to read and navigate. We are both companies who are passionately committed to serving parents and babies during some of the sweetest times in life. And we feel we can do that even better together!" Johnson agrees, saying "Our core products and services complement each other so perfectly - The Baby Sleep Site® focuses on giving parents the information and techniques they need to help baby sleep better, and Baby Shusher™ provides the tools. It's a perfect match!"

5 Baby Sleep & Feeding Schedule Tips: Nicole Johnson of the Baby Sleep Site Shares Her Top Scheduling Do's and Don'ts

Columbus, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/12/2014 -- For many parents, when it comes to baby and toddler care, a top concern is how to develop and implement an age-appropriate daily schedule. The right daily schedule helps a family's day remain predictable, which can be a big help to mom and dad. But the right schedule can also improve a baby or toddler's overall sleeping habits, not to mention ensuring that a child gets adequate daily meals!

However, baby and toddler schedules can be tricky - the wrong schedule can actually do damage to a child's sleep habits, and can create sleep problems like early waking, late bedtimes, and over-tiredness. In many ways, the wrong sleep and feeding schedule is worse than no schedule at all! Nicole Johnson, Founder and Lead Sleep Consultant at The Baby Sleep Site, affirms this: "In my years of sleep consulting, I have seen many families who struggle with sleep for months, and for a number of them, the root cause of their children's sleep issues is a scheduling problem."

Specifically, says Johnson, schedules tend to go awry when parents miscalculate about naps: "I have worked with so many parents who don't time up naps correctly, or who don't understand what constitutes the best nap length. It's usually the naps that wreak havoc on the schedule." Johnson also asserts that less-than-ideal bedtime and morning wake-times can also create schedule issues. And finally, Johnson explains, ill-timed feedings can contribute to schedule problems as well: "Feedings need to be spaced far enough apart that a baby is taking a full feeding, but not so far apart that the child ends up hungry by the time bedtime rolls around - that will just lead to excess night waking, due to hunger."

So, how can parents work towards creating an ideal sleep and feeding schedule - one that will contribute to long naps and sleeping through the night? Johnson shares her top 5 scheduling do's and don'ts:

DO make sure your baby or toddler takes enough naps during the day, and that the naps are long enough. "Many parents assume that if their child sleeps less during the day, it will mean more sleep at night, but nothing could be further from the truth!" says Johnson. "A baby or toddler who takes the right number of naps for her age, and whose naps are long enough (at least an hour, for children 6 months and older) tend to sleep better at night."

DON'T allow naps that are too early or too late. "In general," says Johnson, "I recommend that once a baby is 4 months or older, there should be no morning naps before about 8 or 8:30 a.m., and no evening naps that go past about 5 or 6 p.m." Johnson explains that this ensures naps won't interfere with morning wake-up time or with bedtime.

DO strive for a consistent bedtime. "This is step one of creating a good schedule," says Johnson. "Create a bedtime routine, commit to doing it every night, and work to make sure that your baby or toddler is going down for bed at approximately the same time each night." This will help stabilize morning wake-up time, says Johnson, which in turn helps naps stay on track.

DON'T let your child be up for the day before about 6 a.m., if early morning rising is an issue. "Once a baby is about 4 months old, if early waking is a problem, I encourage families to treat any early-morning wake-ups that happen before 6 a.m. as night wakings," says Johnson. "If you get a child up for the day at 4:30 a.m., it is guaranteed to throw the whole schedule out of whack."

DON'T try to implement a rigid, by-the-clock schedule too early. Johnson explains, "Most babies are ready for a somewhat clock-based schedule by about 6 months, but many are not ready for it before then." Instead, Johnson suggests that parents of newborns and young infants create flexible schedules that are based on sleep and feeding routines, and that are oriented around feeding and sleep windows of time, instead of fixed clock times.

How Autism Affects Sleep: Insights and Tips from the Baby Sleep Site

Columbus, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/01/2014 -- In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, The Baby Sleep Site® is drawing attention to the ways that Autism Spectrum (ASD) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) impact a child's sleep.

The Baby Sleep Site® sleep consultant, Sarah Wiescamp, a former special-education teacher and early intervention specialist with years of experience working with children with ASD and SPD, offers her insights as to how and why these diagnoses impact sleep, as well as her tips on how parents of children with ASD and SPD can work to promote better sleep for their little ones.

It is estimated that over 50% of children diagnosed with ASD and/or SPD will experience sleep problems. Specifically, children with ASD and/or SPD tend to have trouble falling asleep at bedtime, and staying asleep throughout the night. As Wiescamp points out, "This is due to irregular circadian rhythms and sleep/wake cycles - and those are sometimes due to abnormal melatonin regulation." Wiescamp also explains that children with ASD and/or SPD are also more prone to seizures, reflux problems, night terrors, and sleep apnea, which all contribute to sleep issues.

Sensory issues also affect falling asleep and staying asleep, says Wiescamp. "Children with SPD tend to be hypersensitive to visual and audio stimuli," explains Wiescamp. "Excess noise, bright lights, scratchy bedding - all of these can become big barriers to sleep for children with SPD."

Wiescamp is also quick to emphasize, though, that parents can do a lot to help children with ASD and/or SPD sleep better. According to Wiescamp, parents can accomplish this by:

-...creating a strong bedtime routine.
-...ensuring that bedtime happens at the same time each night.
-...counting down to bedtime, in order to help the child wind down and to understand that sleep is approaching.
-...creating a soothing sleep environment, by utilizing room-darkening shades, carpet to muffle noise, etc.
-...remaining in the room until their child falls asleep (although Wiescamp acknowledges that this is not possible for every family.)

Of course, some parents find that they are not able to overcome their children's sleep challenges alone - but they may not know where to turn. "Parents of children with ASD or SPD may feel like they can't turn to a sleep consultant for help because their child's diagnosis makes the sleep situation unique," explains Wiescamp. "Fortunately, I am able to offer my expertise as a trained sleep consultant alongside my expertise in working with children with ASD and SPD, and offer sleep help that utilizes ASD best practices and current research." In this way, emphasizes Wiescamp, she is able to "bridge the gap" for parents of children with ASD and SPD, and provide personalized sleep help that accounts for the child's unique challenges.

For a limited time, in honor of Autism Awareness Month, The Baby Sleep Site® is hosting a special giveaway. One family affected by ASD and/or SPD will win a free sleep consultation package, and the chance to work one-on-one with Sarah to get personalized sleep help.
The 4 Month Sleep Regression: Tips from the Baby Sleep Site

Columbus, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/21/2014 -- Sleep regressions remain one of the biggest sleep challenges that parents of babies and toddlers face. And of all the sleep regressions that babies and toddlers experience, the 4 month sleep regression is among the toughest to handle.

Why? As Nicole Johnson, president of The Baby Sleep Site®, explains, it's because the 4 month sleep regression marks a permanent change in a baby's sleeping patterns. In the first few months after birth, says Johnson, babies have relatively short sleep cycles - they tend to fall asleep quickly, and sink very quickly into deep sleep. This is the main reason why newborns and very young babies tend to sleep anywhere, and sleep through anything.

However, these sleep patterns are short-lived, says Johnson - around 4 months of age, as a baby's brain matures, she begins to develop more 'grown up' sleep patterns, and her sleep cycles tend to look more like an adult's. Starting at about 4 months, a baby will take longer to fall asleep - and when she does fall asleep, she will cycle in and out of light sleep and deep sleep. During those period of light sleep, she is more likely to wake up and cry. This is a permanent change to sleeping patterns, emphasizes Johnson; once a baby's brain has developed to the point where her sleep cycles have matured, there is no going back!

But the 4 month sleep regression doesn't have to translate into permanent exhaustion for the whole family, says Johnson - there are ways mom and dad can cope, and can encourage longer stretches of sleep for baby. Those include:

-Allowing baby to sleep for short (supervised) stretches in an infant swing.
-Swaddling baby for sleep.
-Encouraging baby to use a pacifier for comfort.
-Offering baby a "dream feed", in which parents feed baby right before going to sleep themselves, which can help baby sleep longer and can provide more sleep for mom and dad.

These are all good, short-term coping solutions for the 4 month sleep regression. However, Johnson cautions that none of these will actually solve the problem of night wakings and short naps that the 4 month sleep regression causes. "To do that," explains Johnson, "you need to focus on helping your baby learn to fall asleep more independently, so that the way she associates falling asleep does not always need to involve you." This is key, says Johnson. Once your baby can fall asleep on her own, she will be well on her way to sleeping through the night, and to developing a more predictable daytime nap schedule.

How can parents teach their babies to fall asleep without help? That process (called sleep coaching, or sleep training) can be daunting, and many parents find that they don't even know where to begin, let alone how to proceed! That's where The Baby Sleep Site® comes in. As Johnson explains, "The Baby Sleep Site was founded with the express intention of helping parents around the world solve their babies sleep challenges. We work alongside parents to help them teach their babies and toddlers how to fall asleep without help, and we tailor our recommendations and strategies so that they fit each family's unique situation."
