Bernie Hrubala and June Ling as Keynote Speakers in the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors Presenting on the Future of ASME Standards

The pressure vessel manufacturing industry sees the future having a process that easily integrates with geographic variations: be it language or material in nature.

Jiutepec, Morelos -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/14/2014 -- The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBBI) on May 3, 2014, presented the future of ASME Standards and Certification with speakers Bernie Hrubala (Senior Vice President of ASME Standards and Certification, and Chairman of the Standards and Certification Board of Directors) and June Ling (Associate Executive Director for ASME Codes and Standards).

The goal of the said conference was to detail the operations of ASME boiler and pressure vessel system and to look beyond what's shaping the pressure vessel manufacturing industry, as well as the trends and challenges the industry is expected to face in the future.

Hrubala, in his speech, emphasized that currently, the focus of the industry is more on codes and standards and merely the boiler and pressure vessel part. Today's globalization requires the industry to stay on top of the development and technical codes and standards. NBBI's publication contains 30 separate code books which are now more technical in nature. With the help of thousands of volunteer members of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Committee who continuously write codes, it becoming more and more possible to deal with the 25 different conformity evaluation marks.

NBBI's standards are now being adopted by all US states, provinces of Canada, and are referred to in national regulations. The publication is now in French, Chinese, Japanse, and Korean translations, and soon to have Spanish translations to accommodate the growing industry in Spanish-Latin America.

Hrubala projects how the market would fare stronger as he sees the international market exceeding the US market by far towards the end of 2014. And what's more exciting according to him is that the great rebirth of nuclear would entail better growth in the board's conformity assessment programs. The industry sees a swift swing in global operations and competition. National and regulatory codes are expected to grow as the board keenly works with a number of countries, their governments, and inspection authorities in assisting them in coming up with customized standards within their countries using ASME code as the general basis. The goal of this effort is have each country vigilantly use the codes and abide by the standards set by the board. This trend is geared towards helping each country achieve a safer industry. Well-trained and well-educated operators are but the biggest investment of the pressure vessel manufacturing industry.

Ling, on her speech, also noted that building upon the strengths of the system is where she sees the industry heading to. "We must maintain our technical prowess. We must continue to engage stakeholders in the process. We maintain an open and transparent consensus process, and that means a lot to many of the stakeholders. We maintain a focus on safety and market-driven need. And we maintain confidence in the integrity of the process and infrastructure. It's all of the above that brings the ASME code process throughout the world, and all five in combination is unique."

The pressure vessel manufacturing industry sees the future having a process that easily integrates with geographic variations: be it language or material in nature. The goal is to be the vanguard in technological advancement where the board has a strengthened configuration with other countries' codes and where there is sufficient stakeholder participation not only in the US but all across the globe. Meeting the market needs of both the governments and the pressure vessel industry is the board's target.

MPGIA SA De CV Advised That when It Comes to Fabrication, Reparation of Pressure Vessels - Let the Pros Do the Job

Dangers associated with pressure vessels are instilled to each and every engineer’s mind, they need not be reminded regarding this matter; looking solely at the ideal gas law says it all. Furthermore, events like the 1905 Massachusetts boiler explosion have shown that without the proper safety procedures engineering pressure vessels can go bad swiftly and with fatal consequences.

Jiutepec, Mexico -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/13/2014 -- The 1905 phenomenon led ASME to create codes that pressure vessels and boilers must meet to ensure safety.

Usually, a pressure vessel is a storage tank or container that has been intended to operate at pressures above 15 p.s.i.g. Latest examinations of pressure vessels have revealed that there are a significant number of cracked and damaged vessels in workplaces. Cracked and damaged vessels can result in seepage or rupture failures. Probable health and safety risks of leaking vessels include poisonings, suffocations, fires, and explosion hazards. Rupture failures can be much more disastrous and can cause extensive damage to life and property. It is important that the safe design, setting up, operation, and maintenance of pressure vessels in accordance with the appropriate codes and standards should be left to the professionals; it's for the safety of the workplace and the workers as well.

How to search for pressure vessel fabricators in Mexico? MPGIA SA de CV advised companies not to put the company and the worker's life at jeopardy, yes the workers may be aware on the maintenance and all minor work but when it comes to fabrication, reparation of pressure vessels let the pros do the job.

Though MPGIA SA de CV may be new in the industry but they are backed with a pool of professional workforce who has extensive knowledge in the field. MPGIA only supplies professional qualified workforce services that work based upon a quality control system, with the technical know-how for the fabrication/construction, enlargement, alteration, setting up and management of diverse projects. The company assures that the quality of service they provide to there is topnotch, competitively priced and there will be no delay in the delivery.

MPGIA's service is ASME stamped and certified. It's not easy to get the ASME certification, maybe they don't have a complicated vessel, maybe they don't need too optimization. Still, they are going to need an advanced analysis program. It is a must for them to employ the use FEA to certify this vessel for seismic analysis. That being said, regardless of their design, regardless how credible and effective they think it is, simulation can play an important role in getting their ASME certification. This goes to show that they are credible enough to do the job.

Human Intervention and Machines: Responsible Handling and Proper Implementation Are Keys for Humans to Have a Good Relationship with the Machines

The standards on the three phase separators should be implemented on all kinds of pressure vessels all across the globe to lessen the number of accidents happening in the field.

Jiutepec, Mexico -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/23/2014 -- There are several reasons why the definition of pressure vessel varies from country to country. For one, manufacture, operation and design are backed up by legislation which varies in geographic locations. Pressure is a dangerous science and had cause fatal accidents have happened in the long history of pressure vessel which more or less started during the industrial revolution. As a result of several boiler explosions, design and testing standards had been implemented. A system of certification was also approved to lessen accidents caused by pressure vessel explosion.

According to statistics conducted by the National Board of Broiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors, the total number of accidents, injuries and deaths in the U.S. and Canada involving boilers and pressure vessels in 1999 increased to7.63 per cent compared to the number reported in 1998. The number of reported cases had increased from 2,011 in 1998 to 2,163 in 1999 respectively. The two main causes of these accidents were actually considered as human error such as operator error or poor maintenance and low water condition. However, most fatal injuries caused by pressure vessel accidents can be blamed to burner failures and limit controls which are manufacturing errors and not human errors. This report emphasizes the importance of the implementation of testing standards in the manufacture of vessels.

Most personnel risk their lives while manipulating a Three Phase Pressure Vessel, reason why laws have been implemented to make sure these risk factors were decreased. These will then result to the enhancement of the personnel's safety, lessened risk in jeopardizing other critical components and the avoidance in releasing hazardous and toxic contents to the environment.

These standards should be implemented on all kinds of Pressure Vessels all across the globe. These standards will lessen the number of accidents happening in the field. This will aid in the peace of mind of workers who are handling these kinds of machineries. If proper implementation and testing standards were met, accidents caused by pressure vessels will decrease if not terminated.

Factors as discussed above should be considered in the trade of vessels, such as a Three Phase Pressure Vessels in Mexico. It should always be the safety of the personnel handling these machines that should be considered first. Of course, human responsibility is also an added factor. Responsible handling and proper implementation are keys to having a good relationship with these machines.

Shell and Tube Exchanger Design: What We Need to Know About Its Allocation of Fluids and Other Design Pertinent Parameters

Anyone designing a shell and tube heat exchanger should consider a number of bounds and constraints to ensure that the design being made will exhaust all cases.

Jiutepec, Morelos -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/04/2014 -- The shell and tube heat exchanger, being the most common kind of heat exchanger used in oil refineries and other large chemical processes, have certain parameters when it comes to design. The number one factor affecting its design is deciphering the type of fluid that should enter the shell side and the tube side where the fluid shoud go. With this being said, anyone designing a shell and tube heat exchanger should consider a number of bounds and constraints to ensure that the design being made will exhaust all cases.

The folllowing should be considered when designing a shell and tube heat exchanger:

1. The tube side should have a corrosive fluid. The purpose of this is to cut costs from expensive materials as only the tubes, tubesheets, heads, and channels would need costly corrosion-defiant alloys. Acidic solution on the shell side needs the entire exchanger to make use of the materials.

2. The tube side should have high pressure to reduce exchanger costs. Take note that a large diameter shell has a lower pressure rating unlike the smaller tube diameter which, for the similar metal thickness, would yield a higher pressure.

3. The shell side should be where the fluid would go. The cut should be a mixture of consufing cuts, spacing, and different forms such as segmental, double segmental, rod-baffle cut, and the like to put up with different sorts of pressure-drop requirement. For pressure drop sensitivity, services under vacuum should always be on the side of the shell.

4. It is imperative for the condensing fluid to go to the shell side. A low velocity shell side would result to the separation of the vapor and the liquid inside the exchanger. Thus, the falling of the liquids results to a leaner vapor lessening the required temperature for a more condensed liquid from the vapor that was left over.

5. The shell side should have more allocation for vapor for pressure reduction at certain volumes for a higher heat-transfer coefficient.

6. The tube side should have more fluid with a propensity to foul normally as it is way effortless to clean straight tubes as compared to the shell. The same concept goes for comparatively bulk tube pitch or square tube pattern. Using a permanent tubesheet requires placing a clean fluid on the shell side since the exchanger configuration greatly impacts the options. The fixed tubesheet is usually difficult to clean unless a chemical cleaning material is used. U-tubes, on the other hand, are way difficult to clean as compared to the straight tubes.

7. A shell and tube exchanger with an increased risk of solidification or freezing must be avoided. Whenever an exchanger is being used, the fluid with a risk of solidification must be included in the tubes to that the tube bundle can be pulled out and replaced once the fluid solidifies. But once the solid is on the shell side already, it would be difficult or could even be impossible to get rid of the tube bundle and would eventually need replacement.

8. The exchange in viscious services are intricate. A thick fluid on the tube siden would yield increased pressure drop but minimum heat transfer favoring shell-side distribution. Heat transfer is being reduced with igh pressure drop on the shell side that is considerably being promopted by going around baffles. It is important for the user to be mindful of the need for shell side modification to minimize damages on the shell side to prevent vibration damage caused by high pressure.

There are but advantages however in the distribution of fluid susceptible to freezing in the shell side. Exchanger is being put back to service via heating on the exterior of the shell with the use of electric tracing that facilitates melting of ample fluid needed.

Local plugs are being produced in all types of allocation patterns. Fluid will be set solid with the dropping of the velocity caused by enough temperature needed on the other side of the exchanger occuring on the shell side after the baffles on the edge of the shell. The same goes with tubes which can have various flow rates. A low flow rate attaining a lower temperature cause more freezing or setting up. Freezing fluids yield large areas for the exchangers.

Heat Exchangers Are Not Just for Space Heaters and Other Applications, but Are Also Used in Cooling Appliances Such as Refrigerator and Air Conditioners

The house appliances perform according to its function. Interestingly, there is this heat exchange process that tickles every application.

Jiutepec, Mexico -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/04/2014 -- In everyday routine, home appliances have been part of the easiest way of living. From refrigerator down to space heaters, heating and cooling applications have been used. These appliances though provide comfortable life, still there are some interesting tricks behind every application, and one of those is the device called heat exchanger whose primarily responsibility is the transfer of heat from one medium to another.

Heat exchangers are not just for space heaters and other applications, but are also used in cooling appliances such as refrigerator and air conditioners. The transfer of heat without transferring the fluid that carries the heat is the essential principle of a heat exchanger. These appliances use heat exchangers in the opposite way from central heating systems. They remove heat from a compartment or room where it is not wanted and pump it away in a fluid to some other place where it can be dumped out of the way. These varied uses of heat exchangers can be distinguished according to the direction of the liquid flow.

In some applications, the heat exchangers can be parallel-flow, cross-flow or countercurrent. In parallel-flow heat exchangers, both fluid move in the same direction, entering, and exciting the exchanger side by side. On the other hand, when the fluid paths flow perpendicular to one another, it is cross-flow heat exchangers. Unlike the latter, countercurrent heat exchangers' fluid paths flow in opposite directions. Countercurrent heat exchangers tend to be more effective than other types of exchangers.

Apart from classifying heat exchangers based on fluid direction, there are types that vary mainly in their composition. Some heat exchangers include multiple tubes, such as tube bundle, whereas other consist of hot plates with room for fluid to flow between them. In addition, the other four different designs of heat exchangers namely shell and tube, plate, regenerative, and intermediate fluid or solid. Shell and tube design is the most used type, which has multiple finned tubes. In the plate heat exchanger, the fluid flows through baffles. This kind of exchanger is typically more efficient than the shell and tube design. On other hand, the regenerative heat exchanger and intermediate fluid or solid heat exchanger functions as an exchanger taking advantage of the heat from a specific process and using the fluids or solids within it to hold heat.

Take note that it is important to keep in mind that not all heat exchangers depend on the transfer of heat from liquid to liquid, but in some cases utilize other medium instead.

Generally, this is the trick of heat exchanger behind every home appliance that works in every single house.

Setting the Bar for the Highest Quality in Product Fabrication: How Important Is It to Comply with the ASME Standards?

Most competent engineering firms specify required fabrication tolerance written in contract documents. However, some of these companies often failed to meet so, most especially if it is the standards of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards.

Morelos, Mexico -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/27/2014 -- ASME fabrication tolerance sets the bar for the highest quality in product fabrication. Pressure vessel, a container for the containment of pressure either internal or external, in particular, has mandatory requirements, specific prohibitions, and non- mandatory guidance for pressure vessel materials, design, fabrication, inspection, testing, certification, and pressure relief.

In an old yet significant research, bulk transporter reported that the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors recorded the increase number of accidents involving pressure vessels with 24% over the course of a year 1999 to 2000. Aside from unfired pressure vessels, it includes power boilers, steam heating boilers and water heating boilers.

According to The International Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the construction – relating to pressure integrity only has its own established rules to govern the design, fabrication, and inspection of boilers and pressure vessels, and nuclear power plant components.

But do you know what the pressure vessel dimension inspection requirement is? Some of these have not yet been addressed in ASME standards. The inspection includes mill undertolerance of plates and pipes, out of roundness of shell, nozzles and attachments (orientation, projection, elevation and levelness), weld mismatch and weld reinforcement.

After completing the general requirements as included in subsection A of Division 1, the requirements pertaining to methods of fabrication of pressure vessels are the following. In part UW-Requirements for Pressure Vessels Fabricated by Welding, the general is UW-1 through to UW-3, materials-UW-5, design- UW-8 through to UW-21, fabrication- UW-26 through to UW-54, marking and reports- UW-60 and pressure relief devices- UW-65.

Meanwhile, in part UF- Requirements for Pressure Vessels Fabricated by Forging, the general is UF-1, materials- UF-5 through to UF-7, design- UF-12 through to UF-7, design- UF-12 through UF-25, fabrication- UF-26 through to UF-43, inspection and tests- UF-45 through to UF-55, marking and reports- UF-115, pressure relief devices-UF-115 and pressure relief devices- UF-125.

In part UB-Requirements for Pressure Vessels Fabricated by Brazing, the general is UB-1 through to UB-3, materials-UB-5 though to UB-7, design-UB-9 though to UB-22, fabrication- UB-30 through to UB-37, inspection and tests- UB-40 through to UB-50, marking and reports- UB-55 and pressure relief devices- UB-60

Having a pressure component designed and fabricated in accordance with high standards would indeed guarantee a long, useful service life, and provide the protection of human life and property. This is why companies of pressure vessel were encouraged to consider the ASME standards.

An Effort to Achieve Genuine Standards: Bringing Back the History of ASME Standards

ASME is truly a great help in today’s world. Perhaps, different machineries which possess ASME standards have been part of every successful task or work and will be part of many more in near future.

Morelos, Mexico -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/12/2014 -- Given that the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is well known for its standards, still are still constantly seeking an expansion of standards on a higher standing, on a global level. But before interestingly foreseeing the paramount possibilities of ASME, there are these efforts behind genuine standards truly labored by ASME.

ASME started to work on certifying just two nations, namely, the United States and Canada. Aiming for more international members, the organization sweated out on their works to attain a global community. Primarily, they effectively encouraged more students and professionals of many countries to participate in standards development and attend to numerous conferences outside the US.

As social change and economic development approached, the industrialization became a practice of development in the world. The modernization was translated into companies across other countries. The companies eventually came up with one global standards and it increasingly appeared to be important.

After so, standards of ASME were then translated into a variety of language including Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

Who formulated the standards?

ASME's Council on Standards and Certification, who managed six supervisory and four advisory boards, worked and standardized the criteria. Before, ASME initiated its first published standard in 1884. The launched standards were for the uniformity of testing methods of boilers. Then, the society focused its attention to pipes and pipe thread. As fire businesses found their hose couplings not fitted to hydrants outside their specific location, non- standardized pipe thread helped Great Chicago Fire, the great Baltimore fire and other fire companies.

Meanwhile, the standards will not be completed without the sea of expert people who are included in more than 700 committees and over 4,500 volunteers. These volunteers were working as engineers.

Meanwhile, ASME Standards Development was set for a balance among varied interests and perspectives. This has been put into exchange of arguments and discussions that are crucial to make diversity an indispensable asset. Moving forward, technical minds of volunteer engineers showed off their acumen and time for the development of standards. This is focused on public safety enhancement and global trade promotion.

As a result, computers, hand tools, medical devices, elevators, boilers and other mechanical devices were put under the ASME standards. From then on, manufacturers ensured the involvement of one or more engineering standards.

ASME is truly a great help in today's world. In fact, ASME is remarkably growing with its connection to 75 nations. Perhaps, different machineries which possess ASME standards have been part of every successful task or work and will be part of many more in near future.

Learning from GE Hitachi's $2.7 Million Dollars Settlement: The Pains of the Nuclear Industry

In addressing the growing pains in the nuclear industry, monetary incentives as a means to downplay nuclear suppliers’ faulty innovations must be totally removed.

Jiutepec, Mexico -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/06/2014 -- Although allegations haven't been proven yet, GE Hitachi resorted to paying $2.7 million dollars on January 2014 as settlement for the lawsuit filed against them by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and US Department of Energy to resolve contentions under False Claims Act regarding the Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) – GE's newly-designed nuclear reactor. GE was under the suspicion that it made forge statements about the component of the said nuclear reactor known as the steam dryer.

All nuclear reactor applicants for design certification are required by the NRC to prove that vibrations brought about by the steam dryer will not cause damage to a nuclear plant. The main function of a steam dryer is to drain out liquid water droplets from the nuclear reaction condensation that produce electricity in boiling-water reactors. GE Hitachi was at fault in hiding the obvious flaws in its steam dryer investigation and non-admission of a lack of proper analysis of its steam dryer in accordance with the applicable standards. Moreover, the company misrepresented the accuracy of its design model using verifiable data.

Despite the fact that a steam dryer is not believed to be a safety constituent, Philip Tipping of Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate, on 2008 mentioned in his research about the power uprate issues in nuclear power plants, that the nuclear industry admits that maintaining the structural veracity of the steam dryer is crucial in ensuring non-cracking of vibrations and avoidance of debris from loosing which while they enter the pressure vessel fabricator and steam lines which compromise the reacting process.

Four decades ago, Mitsuhiko Tankana, the Babcock-Hitachi leader for the pressure vessel fabricator project known as the Fukushima reactors, during the wake of the Fukushima upheaval, stated that when the risks heightened, GE would do nothing but to do what is legal and safe. As can be remembered, the flawed GE-designed Fukushima reactors also stirred controversies when GE failed to address a safety concern when it was manufactured. The pressure vessel fabricator was an important component containing the reactor core. But what Hitachi did was to cover up the issue using money as it attempted to correct the problem.

Until now, it seems that the same corporate culture is still being exhibited by the said company – ignoring design flaws and covering up safety problems. The nuclear industry is indeed faced with a serious problem: dollars resolve any issue concerning liability laws and regimes which create exemption of nuclear suppliers from being liable for the risks being created by their designs. Even at the point of negligence, at the expense of safety and security.

A History of Steaming Pressure: The Wonders of Perfecting the Pressure Vessel's Technology

The pressure vessels and pressure systems technology’s struggle to create the perfect design for efficiency.

Morelos, Mexico -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/30/2014 -- Pressure vessels have many applications and are widely used both in private and industrial sectors, in which transportation and storage of an array of pressurized gases and fluids are the top priorities. They are designed strictly according to the appropriate design codes and standards governing its manufacturing, installation and operation, for it will cause a substantially safety hazard if inadequately designed.

The development of pressure vessels dated back to the time of Sir George Stephenson, known as the "Father of the Railways". He explored the possibility of utilizing the steam engine for self-propulsion when early steam engines are only stationary affairs. He was commissioned to rebuild a broken pumping engine and then to build a locomotive at the Killingworth mine in the northeast of England. This had been a success and soon, he set up a locomotive manufacturing company with his son Robert, and named it Robert Stephenson and Company.

George Stephenson and his colleagues developed pressure vessels and pressure systems technology from practical experience. There were no safety inspectors back then but as responsible engineers, they struggled to ensure both safety and their reputation.

An example of one of the first welded pressure vessel stands in front of the Combustion Engineering offices at the Chattanooga in the USA. This vessel was hideously designed, was cheap to manufacture and was only visually inspected with no standards, but represented a major step in the development of pressure vessel technology. One of the earlier vessels' problems, boiler explosions, led to 732 deaths.

As design rules were developed, there was a conscious effort to avoid failure. The technical issues covered in the design rules for pressure vessels have been, and are still being, developed to guard against anticipated failure modes.

Along with the development of computers, computer aided design had led to enormous step forward in pressure vessel technology. Analysis has become the most crucial part and replaced experience and testing as basis of the design.

Today, there is a good provision of national standards relating to basic pressure vessel design. Many of these have developed independently but all owe a great deal to the ASME codes.

And as of March this year, KAIST spearheaded a milestone in the development of pressure vessels in terms of design, cost, and efficiency by successfully launching its first box-shaped, large size pressure tanks for storage and transit of pressurized gas and fluids.

"Our box-type pressure vessel represents ground-breaking research. This innovative technology will dramatically change the rules of the game for industry concerning production, transportation, and storage of fluids under high pressure and at low temperatures." Professor Pal G. Bergan, KAIST researcher, said.

For pressure vessels manufacturers, the continuous evolution of the technology holds a promise of steaming innovation in the industry.
