New Kansas Study Finds Inequality, Racial Disparity, Redlining and Infant Mortality

H.E.A.T: NEW 3 YEAR STUDY SHOWS INEQUALITY IN WYANDOTTE COUNTY, KANSAS
Socioeconomic Limitations: Race, Redlining, Infant Mortality, Lead Poisoning, Length of Life and Healthcare Access

Kansas City, KS -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/06/2016 -- A new study released by the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County (CHC) entitled H.E.A.T (Health Equity Action Transformation) will reveal problems related to health and health outcomes, race, poverty and multiple other socioeconomic limitations in Wyandotte County. The study, in cooperation with the REACH Healthcare Foundation, was performed by the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, The Ohio State University. This report dives into the causes of high infant mortality rates and problems associated with poor access to affordable housing and routine health care providers, as well as historical records related to zoning and real estate issues like redlining. (Redlining is the practice of arbitrarily denying or limiting financial services to specific neighborhoods, generally because its residents are people of color or are poor) H.E.A.T also reveals why many are suffering from chronic heart disease and lead poisoning. The full report as well as videos of the study results are available to the public at www.wearewyandotte.com.

Going beyond health outcomes, the study materials provide insight into how and why these health outcomes can be improved through systemic changes, community involvement and engagement.

Key findings include:

There are 8 vulnerable populations in Wyandotte County, 30-45% of those of greatest concern are children.

Redlining and Opportunity Mapping: Historical maps and documents provide evidence of long term neighborhood disinvestment rooted in discriminatory housing policy.

Predominantly black neighborhoods exhibited the highest infant mortality rate (IMR) of 11.6 infant deaths per 1000 live births, more than double the IMR of predominantly white neighborhoods (4.9) and Hispanic neighborhoods (8.2). The Black IMR in Kansas has been more than twice that for whites over the last 20 years.

Length of life varies dramatically from one party of Wyandotte County to another. In many central Kansas City neighborhoods, the average age at death ranges from 59 to 62 years. In neighborhoods a few miles west, the average age at deaths jumps from 71 to 81 years.

Access to quality healthcare is a challenge: more than 74% of patients live between 5 to 15-minute drive time from the closest hospital. While to many, that seems like a drivable distance, considerable numbers of them don't have access to a vehicle.

Nearly half of Wyandotte County's residential parcels, through a combination of age and low assessed value, hold the potential for numerous health risks, one being lead poisoning due to presence of lead based paint.

"Wyandotte County Kansas has consistently ranked last out of 105 counties in Kansas for social determinants of health, we have one of the highest fetal infant mortality rates in the nation and the 12th highest murder rate," said Jerry Jones, executive director of the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County. "We wanted to know why, and what we found is startling. The answers lie within the pages of the H.E.A.T Report. I hope it makes people think," Jones added. The Health Equity Action Transformation (H.E.A.T.) project is the culmination of curiosity and commitment of the many partners who have worked tirelessly over the past three years to answer the question "why", and to provide a multi-view perspective of the health opportunities that exist (and where they do not exist) for the residents of Wyandotte County.

McCormick Distilling Co. Acquires Broker's London Dry Gin

Broker’s Gin is made in a 200-year-old gin distillery located in the heart of England, using a traditional copper pot still.

Kansas City, MO -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/11/2015 -- Privately owned McCormick Distilling Co., one of the oldest distilleries in the United States, has expanded its portfolio of premium spirits with the acquisition of Broker's Gin Ltd. This deal marks McCormick's first entry into the premium gin category. Broker's London Dry Gin is the first gin to score 97 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge and is currently available in 60 countries and in some of the most influential on-premise establishments in the world.

Broker's Gin was created by brothers Martin and Andy Dawson in the late 1990's. The name and logo are a nod to gin's status as a traditionally English-produced spirit; a gentleman wearing a bowler hat evokes an immediately recognizable image of London, and the name pays homage to the stockbrokers upon whose heads such hats were typically found.

Broker's Gin is made in a 200-year-old gin distillery located in the heart of England, using a traditional copper pot still. Ten internationally-sourced natural botanicals are steeped for 24 hours in a quadruple-distilled pure grain spirit made from English wheat, which is then distilled for a fifth time.

"Broker's Gin is a great complement to McCormick Distilling Co. This transaction represents another important step toward ensuring that our portfolio is optimally structured. We're excited about the opportunities this will create for our growth, both domestically and internationally," said Ed Pechar, McCormick's Chairman of the Board.

"Along with 360 Vodka and Tequila Rose, adding Broker's Gin to our portfolio will continue McCormick Distilling Co.'s tradition of offering impeccable products that represent good price points to a variety of consumers," said Mick Harris, President of McCormick Distilling Co. "Premium gin continues to capture exceptional market share in North America and around the world as cutting-edge bartenders use it in a multitude of specialty cocktails. With the addition of Broker's Gin, we can elevate our presence with these emerging trends," Mick added.

Marty and Andy Dawson will continue as brand consultants for the next two years. "We are pleased to complete the transfer of Broker's Gin Ltd. to McCormick Distilling Co., a company that embodies the same family values that will help nurture Broker's Gin to its next chapter of growth," said Martin Dawson.

Lead Bank Opens Flagship Branch in Kansas City's Crossroads District

Lead Bank, an 86-year-old, locally owned financial institution, dedicated to the needs of small businesses and their families, is excited to announce the opening of their third retail banking branch at 1801 Main in the heart of the Kansas City Crossroads District.

Kansas City, MO -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/22/2015 -- Lead Bank, an 86-year-old, locally owned financial institution, dedicated to the needs of small businesses and their families, is excited to announce the opening of their third retail banking branch at 1801 Main in the heart of the Kansas City Crossroads District. To commemorate the grand opening, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held by the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, members of the Board of Directors, the Rowland family, Congressman Representative Emanuel Cleaver II as well as staff and friends of the bank. Leader, a member of the Kansas City Police Department Mounted Patrol Division, who was recently donated by Lead Bank, was also in attendance. In addition to its two existing locations in Lee's Summit and Garden City, Missouri, this is a first branch location in downtown Kansas City.

"Lead Bank is committed to improving the client-banker relationship. Our new Lead Crossroads location gives clients a simpler way to interact with and connect with Bankers since the space puts the client in control of what he/she wants to accomplish; the bank architecture and technology emphasizes what clients want and how clients want to be served. We believe we are able to provide our clients with better service by creating a truly consultative environment," said Josh Rowland, vice chairman of Lead Bank.

Designed by Kansas City-based Clockwork Architecture + Design, the vision of this newly remodeled 26,000 square foot building was to emanate Lead Bank's new vision of banking. Merging virtual and physical elements into one, Lead Bank can now understand and better support the fundamental needs of its clients. With a new approach to branch architecture, this facility will enable Bankers to be side-by-side with clients. Removing physical barriers, for example, large teller counters and oversized desks of traditional bank branches, this workspace will offer Bankers the opportunity to engage with clients on their terms, where they are and how they want to meet – online, by video conference or in a conference room, at a coffee table, a mentor booth or on the mezzanine.

Lead Bank Crossroads was equipped with two drive-through lanes, two electric car-charging stations and a walk-up ATM, perfect for the Crossroads community. Lead Bank will also double as a tech incubator, with designated office space for three grant winners of LaunchKC, a startup community. Lead Bank Crossroads has surpassed traditional banking transactions to create a community bank for collaboration, recreation, and achieving financial goals. The 2,345 square foot indoor/outdoor rooftop mezzanine offers unparalleled north and west-facing views of the downtown Kansas City skyline, encouraging business functions as well as after-hours events. Self-directed technology stations, easily accessible, free parking and located adjacent to the KC Streetcar line, are all added benefits. Breaking down financial barriers of the past will give today's business owners a competitive edge and ultimately change the way people look, think and feel about the banking industry. Bank Crossroads is open from Monday through Saturday. Monday-Wednesday, Friday from 7:30am-6:00 pm, Thursday from 7:30am-7:00 pm, and Saturday 9:00am-12:00 pm.

Roofing Tech Pioneer, Viirt, Secures $900K in Seed Funding

Omaha, NE -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/05/2015 -- Viirt, an Omaha, NE based tech startup in the roofing industry, has raised $900K in venture capital from Dundee Venture Capital and a small group of angel investors. Created by tech entrepreneur and seasoned roofer, Josh Davis, Viirt is an online project management company that will generate a formal roofing bid in one minute or less that is within 5% accuracy. This technology will streamline the overall process from start to finish and introduce "roofing insider" tools to homeowners that have previously not been available to the public.

The cost inefficiencies in the roofing industry come in the form of large marketing expenses and hefty commissions for sales people. Because most homeowners don't buy their own roofing materials and cannot buy in bulk, exaggerated prices on these materials drive costs up. Viirt is able to pass bulk pricing on to homeowners and utilize their platform to facilitate quick and efficient communication, thus saving homeowners 20-30% per job. Most importantly, Viirt stands behind each contractor's work and will secure payment until the contractor has completed the installation. Viirt plans to contract-out work to local, vetted installers in each city.

By utilizing aerial satellite technology, Viirt can pinpoint roof measurements, alleviating the manual process typically provided on-site. Savings vary widely by market, however a typical project costing approximately $13,000 could save the homeowner roughly $3000-$4,000. "Thanks to internet and satellite technology, Viirt will be able to execute most project management functions remotely and automatically, especially on the front end. We are creating much needed transparency in the roofing industry by putting the homeowner back in control of the entire roofing process. We're boosting consumer confidence. I've been in the roofing industry all my life and have done every job possible. Now, I'm excited to modernize the industry by adding a little bit of today's technology to it," said Josh Davis, CEO of Viirt.

About Viirt
Viirt was one of seven startup companies chosen in the 2014 class of Straight Shot, Omaha's e-commerce and software-as-a-service startup (SaaS) accelerator. Straight Shot, headquartered in Omaha, NE, is an accelerator dedicated to rapidly developing technology startups in a way that will allow them to succeed at scale.

The White House Will Recognize Kansas City Startup, Honor Capital, LLC as a "Champion of Change"

Jim Allen, Jr. of Kansas City will be honored as a "Veteran Entrepreneur-Champions of Change" for his work with Honor Capital, LLC

Kansas City, MO -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/26/2014 -- On Monday, August 25, 2014 the White House announced that James S. Allen, Jr., co-founder of Honor Capital, LLC, a Kansas City native and Navy Veteran, has been selected as a 2014 recipient of the "Veteran Entrepreneur-Champions of Change" award. James (Jim) Allen, Jr. will formally receive the designation on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at 1:00 PM ET at the White House as they honor "Champions of Change" veterans and their families who are doing extraordinary work across the country as leaders in entrepreneurship. The "Champions of Change" have distinguished themselves by continuing to serve our country through their successful small businesses and non-profits that create jobs, spur economic growth, and help their communities. This program was created as an opportunity for the White House to feature outstanding individuals with the hopes that they will empower and inspire members of their communities to do the same.

Whittled down from more than 600 applications, the White House chose Mr. Allen for his career and work with Honor Capital, LLC. Honor Capital, LLC is a Kansas City, veteran owned business dedicated to creating financial solutions for post 9/11 veterans so they too can become small business owners. Each of these businesses will create jobs, strengthen families and communities, help sustain the economic growth within the city and make America stronger. As the son of a WWII Naval Special Warfare Officer, Jim learned the value of putting "service before self" and throughout his forty-year career, Mr. Allen has successfully created startups in law, real estate development, investment banking and hospitality. Three of his most notable Kansas City companies are Gilmore & Bell, Stern Brothers & Co. and The National Golf Club of Kansas City. Honor Capital, LLC is co-founded by Marc Esposito and Jamie Allen, Jim's son. Marc was a West Point graduate and decorated, medical evacuation Army helicopter pilot who served two tours and flew more than 400 medical evacuation missions in Afghanistan. Jamie is a Shawnee Mission East and an Annapolis graduate, and former Navy officer that literally "earned his spurs" in combat with an Army cavalry unit during the Iraq Surge.

The "Champions of Change" program is a White House initiative to identify and honor veterans who have started a for-profit or non-profit business, veteran spouses who have started their own business, and individuals that support veterans by providing them with skills, capital, and other necessary resources. This event will showcase these inspirational leaders and highlight the importance of their work. The program will feature remarks by Dr. Jill Biden, wife of the Vice-President and an avid supporter of veterans, as well as Daymond John, Kevin O'Leary, and Robert Herjavec, from ABC's Emmy Award-winning TV show Shark Tank. The event will be live streamed on the White House website at http://www.whitehouse.gov/live.

Women-Owned Businesses Growth Stalls Due to Lack of Funding

Kansas City, MO -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/29/2014 -- Lead Bank is pleased to announce the results of their most recent, original research for women-owned businesses in the Kansas City metropolitan area. This study examines the progress, or lack thereof, and outlook for women-owned business funding opportunities. This study included Kansas City members of the Women's Business Center, including the Women's Presidents' Organization (WPO), Lead Bank clients and other like-minded business owners.

In a recent study led by Lead Bank, 35% of women business owners stated that they are planning acquisition strategies, but 75% can't get the funding they need. "The information Lead Bank collected represents a "call to action" for Kansas City, which aims to be a recognized as America's most entrepreneurial city," said Josh Rowland, Vice Chairman of Lead Bank. Many women do not seek a new loan or line of credit due to a lack of confidence that they'll successfully acquire these funds. Playing an important role in the U.S. economy, women own nearly 8.6 million businesses, employ 7.8 million workers and generate $1.3 trillion in sales. Businesses led by women are one of the fastest growing groups of entrepreneurs, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy. The 2013 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, commissioned by American Express OPEN, stated that the number of women-owned firms has increased by 59% since 1997. However, Kansas has one of the lowest growths in numbers of women-owned firms at only 27%.

According to Sherry Turner, founder of the Women's Business Center of Overland Park, KS, "Growth by acquisition can be stressful for all business owners, and women traditionally have practiced more conservative borrowing practices." With more than 60% of women being self-employed for at least five years and 15% for twenty years, Turner remains optimistic. The percentage of women-owned businesses breaking through the one million dollar glass ceiling is less than one-third the rate of men. "Women-led business growth is at an all-time high with start-ups at 1.5 times the national average. Overall, women have been consistent in business growth with 2% achieving annual revenues of over $1 million", Turner adds.

In an effort to better understand business dynamics, unique challenges and potential opportunities relevant to business owners, Lead Bank aims to create content that reflects the needs of Kansas City's business community, specifically women-owned businesses, on a quarterly basis. Of the women surveyed, additional research found that more than 75% found marketing or advertising a challenge, citing cost as the main source of concern. Only 15% own the property their business operates out of, leaving the majority to lease commercial property and more than half were outsourcing some type of business aspect; typically from providers specializing in marketing or business services such as bookkeeping and tax preparation.

Recently launching a "Women in Business Initiative", Lead Bank is committed to helping women within the Kansas City community reach their full potential. This initiative provides strategic and operational advising to these women business owners as well as access to competitive financing options, low fixed rates and long-term loans.

This is the first report of a five-year endeavor from Lead Bank to create quarterly research reports that will help shape Kansas City business and civic policies. Lead Bank is committed to producing meaningful, influential and creditable data that stimulates discussion among businesses, policy makers and other stakeholders in the economic vitality of Kansas City.
