NY Sports and Spinal Physical Therapy Provided Tested and Proven Cures on How to Get Rid of a Painful Back Without Having a Need for a Surgery

Back surgery should always be the last resort when experiencing back pain. Medications over a long period of time may have some side effects. With Spinal Decompression Therapy provided by NY Sports and Spinal Physical Therapy, the only recorded side effect is a mild case of muscle spasm which lasted for only a short period of time thus it is highly recommended to cure pain.

Scarsdale, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/02/2014 -- As we age, our body especially our bones also age. Physical work and stress also add up to the reasons why our body sometimes ache and deteriorate. As we age, we tend to feel uncomfortable pain on our spine and the lower back. This pain may also be caused by injuries and other numerous factors. Our spinal cord which is located at the back of our torso is protected by 33 vertebrae which are made of bones. Between each vertebra are soft discs with a ligamentous outer layer. These ligaments serve as a protection of the vertebra and the spinal column. We experience back pain because of the wear and tear which causes the weakening of the disc, thus aging. Another reason is what is scientifically termed as herniation or the swelling of the disc which causes pain or numbness.

There are a lot of medical options to consider in treating back pain such as medication, surgery and therapy. Among all these, most patients consider having the Spinal Decompression Therapy that is an expertise of NY Sports and Spinal Physical Therapy in New York. Spinal Decompression is a gentle and non-surgical way to treat injured spinal discs. This kind of therapy is the best procedure to replace surgery. Spinal Decompression Therapy is being done by having the patient lie on a decompression table. During the sessions, spinal discs which have injuries are gently stretched apart producing a suction force inside the disc. This draws bulges and herniation back to the center of the spinal discs including oxygen, nutrient and important healing substances to take the cause of the pain away. This type of therapy can actually help a patient to avoid surgery. Although the number of sessions may take up to 20 depending on the gravity of the pain, it is a promising way to avoid surgery and aid in lessening the cost a patient may spend to cure back pain.

Although Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-surgical treatment, there are still some factors which need to be considered before undergoing the treatment especially in choosing a health care provider which will carry on the procedure.

1. Experience: Do some research and choose a health care provider which already has numerous and successful treatment in Spinal Decompression Therapy

2. Knowledge of the Procedure: Our spinal column is connected to the brain and is said be in charge of our body's physical movement, thus having someone treat our spine and some part of it is a huge risk and we want to have a professional to treat it who knows everything on the treatment is done.

3. Cost: Since Spinal Decompression Therapy is non-surgical and may take up as many sessions as possible; it should not be that costly.

4. Reasonable Treatment Procedure: Since the result of the therapy varies from the illness and from each patient, the number of sessions should also vary depending on the diagnosis.

Physical Therapy as Part of the "Conservative Treatment" for Lumbar Disc Herniation, One of the Specializations of NY Sports and Physical Therapy

Results of the study conducted to test the outcome of conservative treatment including physical therapy in patients with lumbar disc herniation showed that there was an improvement of more than 75% that are tagged as “excellent”, greater than 50% considered it as “good”, and 25% considered the treatment “fair” after two years of undergoing the said treatment.

Scarsdale, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/14/2014 -- Lumbar disc herniation is a disease caused by the drying out of the spongy interior matrix of an intervertrebal disc in the spine, is best treated with the so-called "conservative treatment" that includes physical therapy.

Numbness, weakness, and leg or low back pain are results of the bulging of the outer rings of the disc in the spine. People who usually have this and recover from it after a few weeks are not advised to take any type of treatment. However, if the pain caused by lumbar disc herniation becomes fatal, the non-operative or the "conservative" type of treatment is being prescribed my most doctors. In worst case scenarios that the pain does not heal out over time, surgery usually comes next.

Acta Orthopaedica Belgica, conducted a study on the outcomes of conservative treatment for ruptured lumbar disc herniation. In the study, the patients were evaluated on the first, third, and sixth month of conservative treatment, and on the first and second years of undergoing such treatment. The Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) Back Pain Evaluation Questionnaire was used in the study.

"The authors set up a prospective study of the effect of conservative treatment on a ruptured lumbar disc herniation in 89 patients, between June 2008 and June 2010. Seventy-two patients (81%) improved, while the other 17 (19%) needed surgery. The JOA score (best possible result: 29) was found to be significantly improved in the 72 patients of the conservative group, at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years (t-test: p < 0.001). At final follow-up, after 2 years, 84.7% of the patients in the conservative group had a good or excellent result. However, if the 17 surgical cases were included, this proportion dropped to 68.5%. The volume of the protrusion decreased significantly in the 72 patients of the conservative group: from 1422.52 +/- 539.10 mm3 to 102735 +/- 585.51 mm3 (paired t-test: p < 0.001). There was a definite correlation, in the conservative group, between the final resorption rate on the one hand and the percentage of combined excellent and good results on the other hand (72 cases; Spearman rank correlation coefficient: r 0.01 = 0.470, p < 0.001)."

In the so-called "conservative treatment", patients were asked to perform muscle-strengthening exercises for the abdominals and lower back three times a day while taking celecoxib for one to two weeks, and once a day of the mentioned physical therapy exercises while having three to four weeks of bed rest. Results of the study show that there was an improvement more than 75% that are tagged as "excellent", greater than 50% considered it as "good", and 25% considered the treatment "fair".

Research Shows Physical Therapy Is a Better Long Term Treatment for Patients Suffering from Osteoarthritis and Meniscal Tears

Meniscal Tear in Osteoarthrities Research (METEOR) study revealed findings that surgery is not always the best approach to take for patients suffering from osteoarthritis and meniscal tears.

Scarsdale, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/11/2014 -- "Whether arthroscopic partial meniscectomy for symptomatic patients with a meniscal tear and knee osteoarthritis results in better functional outcomes than non-operative therapy is uncertain." This is what the New England Journal of Medicine study wanted to prove in their recent study. The research later on identified that there is a need to persuade health care providers re-assess their approach to the administration with meniscal tears and osteoarthritis.

Too often, medical practitioners are confused about the bigger contributor to the pain patients feel when they suffer from both osteoarthritis and meniscal tear. Findings of the study Meniscal Tear in Osteoarthrities Research (METEOR) yielded results showing no major variation in functional improvement six months after the patients were subjected to treatments with either post-operative physical therapy or standard physical therapy alone. The same result was yielded after 12 months of treatment.

Showing no significant differences from six to twelve months of therapy, it was later on concluded by the researchers that a dedicated physical therapy routine of patients suffering from both osteoarthritis and meniscal tear. This regiment should be their primary aid. Orthopedic surgeons, internal medicine doctors, physical therapists, family physicians, and the patients themselves must make use of the results of METEOR study's findings when deciding on which approach should be taken for the treatment.

Patients experiencing intense pains, and those who have active lifestyles like the athletes, usually resort to prioritizing surgery. Results of the mentioned study shows that investing in long term physical therapy program would be a better option since it gives a better understand of the condition of the patient and a safer and more proper way of treating them. Based on METEOR study, "Patients who were given standardized physical therapy—individualized treatment and a progressive home exercise program—had the choice of "crossing over" to surgery if significant improvements were not demonstrated. Thirty percent of patients crossed over to surgery during the first six months. At twelve months these patients reported similar outcomes compared to those who initially had surgery. Seventy percent of patients remained with standardized physical therapy."

What the study revealed plays an important role for physical therapists to help their patients understand that surgery is not always the best approach to take. Physical therapy may in fact help in the avoidance of a surgery which has impending dangers, are costly, and may or may not specifically offer benefits to the patients.

More Careful Than Careful: Guidance to Ensure Safe and Effective Physical Regimen for Osteoporosis

Too Fit to Fracture Initiative’s experts presented guidance to ensure safety and effectiveness of the practice on April 2014 in Spain to help both patients and professional practitioners deal with the delicate regimen of osteoporosis treatment.

Scarsdale, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/30/2014 -- Experts from the Too Fit to Fracture Initiative revealed the outcome of an international consensus process to outline exercise recommendations for people suffering from osteoporosis, with or without spine fractures. The guidelines are drafted to help health care practitioners all around the world guide their patients in doing their regimens safely and efficiently. It was presented at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases in Seville, Spain.

The team recommends that people with osteoporosis should enroll in a series of exercise programs that includes resistance and balance training and should not employ aerobic training to the exclusion of resistance or balance training. According to the board, current national physical activity guidelines are appropriate only for individuals with osteoporosis without spine fracture, but not for those with fractures. So after spine fracture, aerobic activity of moderate intensity is preferred to vigorous ones and physical therapy consultation is advised.

Other key point included in the presentation is the recommendation of daily balance and endurance training for spinal extensor muscles of all patients with osteoporosis. Restrictions may not be as helpful because it can only hinder the patient to participate in physical activities. To them, people with osteoporosis, but with no history of spine fracture, should be encouraged to perform activities if they can be done safely or modified. Among those with history of spine fracture, physical or occupational therapist consult is recommended for advice on exercise and physical activity, particularly in the presence of balance or posture impairments, pain, co morbid conditions or that increase the risk of adverse events with exercise or activity, or unsafe movement patterns.

It is also pointed out that health care providers should provide guidance on safe movement, rather than providing general restrictions.
Lead author Dr. Lora Giangregorio, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada, declared, "People with osteoporosis and spinal fractures should be encouraged to participate in resistance training and balance training, as the strongest evidence we have supports multimodal exercise programs. We have developed evidence-based recommendations, as well as a report that addresses the "frequently asked questions" of patients and health care providers around physical activity."

Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease that is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and density which can lead to an increased risk of fracture. Most often than not, our elderly suffer from this condition. Medical experts from Westchester and Rockland counties discussed how to prevent osteoporosis and falls and gave the latest information on osteoporosis treatment at the annual free Community Health Forum in 2010. It is only one of the continuous efforts of organizations to increase the people's awareness regarding this illness.

"We hope that the recommendations are helpful to health professionals worldwide as they guide their osteoporosis patients in safe, effective - and enjoyable - exercise regimens." added Giangregorio.
