No Risk Automation Founder John Hayes Featured in Business Excellence Magazine

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/28/2015 -- John Hayes, founder and CEO of No Risk Automation, was featured in the issue of Business Excellence. The article, entitled, "Agnostic Automation Vendor Selection: Objectivity Required," discussed the four steps of no risk automation.

Hayes explained the four steps to no risk automation include:

1.Application Study and Analysis
2.Specification Development
3.Vendor Selection
4.Project Manage

Hayes shared representing an automated guided vehicle (AGV) vendor is often a conflict of interest. The end-user customer's interests may not align with the AGV vendor's interests. Hayes noted, "The only way to avoid these conflicts is a vendor agnostic approach to automation. As a sales manager for several AGV companies there was an intention to sell as many AGVs as possible. Performance was measured by number of vehicles sold per month, per quarter, per year, year over year."

According the Hayes, There is no single way to completely eliminate all the risks in automation selection. There are steps and processes that mitigate the likelihood of costly mistakes. They go a long way in protecting the automation customer.

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/27/2015 -- No Risk Automation founder, John Hayes, was featured in the issue of AutomationMedia.com. The article, titled, "Eliminating the automation Bias," argued that representing an automated guided vehicle (AGV) vendor is often a conflict of interest.

Hayes recalled, "As a sales manager for several automated guided vehicle (AGV) companies there was an intention: sell AGVs. Performance was measured by number of vehicles sold per month, per quarter, per year, year over year, and at a measured profitability. It took courage to say to the customer and to C-level AGV management, 'Sorry this isn't the right product for you.'"

The end-user customer's interests may not align with the AGV vendor's interests. The only way to avoid these conflicts is a vendor agnostic approach to automation.

According to Hayes, "Rather than entering an automation conversation with a pre-designated solution, there are steps to clearly recognize the best-practices, the leanest solutions, the most rapid return-on-investment (ROI), while avoiding the landmines and confusing games played by many AGV salespeople."

Process Solutions Cause Most Food Firms Defective Automation Implementations

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/22/2015 -- The No Risk Automation newsletter reported that automation equipment is capable of handling loads of raw material. Automation can handle work-in-progress such as beer, soft drinks, cereals, candy, and snack foods. More than eighty percent (80%) of food firms experience defective or inferior automation implementations because an objective material handling operations strategy and process solutions within the food facility has not been carefully analyzed and developed before selecting an AGV vendor. Suppliers of end-of-line automation and material handling in the food sector have a distinct scope of technology to consider, including various types of palletizing robots, stretch wrapping equipment, labeling systems, pallet control systems and laser-guided automatic vehicles. These solutions go beyond AGVs and must contain software for scheduling, routing, monitoring and visualization of the complete end-of-line process. The food sectors special requirements for hygiene, safety, and data tracking are leading component required of effective system designs. Four out of five of these automation projects will be troubled, resulting in a waste in time, money, resources. Only objective and experienced project management expertise can help avoid these disastrous and misguided implementations.

Hayes suggested, "Until automation selection is based on knowledge and information, vendors will make suggestions about solutions that may or may not be in the warehouse, distribution, or manufacturers' best interest. This newsletter is to keep an open conversation about trends, best-practices, and technology pros and cons for those that are in the active planning and automation purchasing stage. This publication will ensure that the appropriate questions are being asked and answered."

Labor and Equipment of New Projects Add Costs Says John Hayes Automation Referee

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/20/2015 -- The typical factions that require an automation referee are cost centers. John Hayes, founder and CEO of No Risk Automation explained, "Typically a project is adopted by a department and is found to be beneficial but the impact on other departments is overlooked. This impact can be added cost for labor or equipment to interface with the new automation. In general this cost is low, but all good managers want to stay within budget. In most cases, this is easily mitigated by having a discussion with senior management to assess the total benefit to the company by shifting budgets and responsibilities. The project then takes on a more holistic, collaborative approach."

Hayes suggested, "Until automation selection is based on knowledge and information, vendors will make suggestions about solutions that may or may not be in the warehouse, distribution, or manufacturers' best interest.
North Carolina Increased New Distribution Centers Ideal for International Business

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/20/2015 -- "North Carolina, and the entire Southeastern United States is quickly becoming the hub of new distribution centers. Many are currently considering automation currently as part of the planning process," according to John Hayes, founder and thought leader of No Risk Automation.

North Carolina has a growing number of shovel-ready sites within 20 miles of the Port of Wilmington. Ideal for international distribution centers, manufacturing facilities or retail distribution centers; the strategic locations available at the North Carolina Ports are perfect for reaching the entire Eastern seaboard and offer improved access to major mid-Atlantic highways and railroads. At-port site selection in North Carolina allows corporations abundant state/regional/local/ports tax incentives and provides access to a skilled and plentiful labor market.

There are certain basic processes that can be evaluated now to avoid the risks of poor automation planning. Too often distribution center planners are fooled by vendor promises. Vendors promise a broad portfolio of automation equipment, software, and service through a network of national, regional and local service centers. These vendors are in the thousands and suggest their automation solution delivers distribution and fulfillment success.

Hayes started the firm to inform and protect automation decision-makers. Hayes noted, "The company also targets large multi-site manufacturing and distribution customers that want to explore automation but does not wish to assign the resources nor has the appropriate resources readily available. The CEO and senior management often provide the leadership in forming an effective relationship with No Risk Automation."

Material Handling Mergers and Acquisitions All-Time High Impacting Automated Guided Vehicle Selection

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/13/2015 -- The No Risk Automation newsletter reported that one of the most important reasons to work with a seasoned expert in material handling is to know the history of the companies prior to the record mergers & acquisitions (M&A). Josh Bond reported in Material Handling Product News that industrial manufacturing M&A value skyrockets past historic levels. Bond noted that merger and acquisition activity in first nine months of 2014 surpassed annual totals in the previous decade.

Following a historic second quarter, M&A activity in the industrial manufacturing sector maintained a strong momentum in the third quarter of 2014. These are among the results of Assembling Value, a quarterly analysis of global deal activity in the industrial manufacturing industry by PwC US. With $102.7 billion in deal proceeds recorded so far this year, the first nine months of 2014 have already exceeded all annual totals of the last 10 years.

John Hayes Automation Referee Helps Collaborative Teams Toward Successful Manufacturing Projects

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/12/2015 -- An independent third party referee, John Hayes founder and CEO of No Risk Automation, can help manufacturers in the automation process by eliminating the feeling of being pushed. Hayes explained, "It allows for the group to become a team and work together more collaboratively. In many cases the department that generated the process has little concept of the steps to take to get from concept to implementing the automation project. The ability to remove pressure from department budgets by having company senior management involved is very important. In many cases, changes are insignificant when lined up against company long-term goals."

Hayes described the importance for each department to understand the bigger picture and other's point of view. The key is first and foremost understanding the actual impact on all departments and cost centers that the automation will touch.

Project Management May Prove Best Automated Guided Vehicle Choice

The automation trouble often starts when the distribution center managers or manufacturing plant managers meet the project implementation team. The implementation group does not know what the customer has said or what the sales rep has promised before this initial meeting. The team is rewarded for increasing project margins and will be very strict in the application of the contract and the specification. A customer advocate is needed. A customer project manager (often an experienced third party with extensive experience in these types of implementations) is needed. The project manager is the watchdog on the implementation on behalf of the customer.

AGV Maintenance Costs Calculated in Manufacturing Production Efficiency Data

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/19/2014 -- No Risk Automation newsletter discussed automated guided vehicle (AGV) maintenance costs. Factored into the cost of maintenance should also be the amount of time required to respond and correct issues with the system on an ongoing basis. Many times the system slowly begins to perform at lower and lower system efficiency. When it gets to a point where production deficiency is visible and causing pain, the reduction from new high performance automation tools is shocking and frequently causes a great deal of acrimony.

The newsletter also explored making an informed decision on return on investment (ROI) when purchasing an AGV. Costs can be evaluated in a myriad of ways. Cost avoidance must also be considered. Often, increases in mobile equipment accidents typically bring increases in the cost of Workers Compensation and Lost Time and production. There are often increases in operational requirements, which are best handled with a fixed one-time cost versus adding increasing recurring labor costs.

Selecting Correct Material Handling Solutions Reduces Manufacturing Plant Costs by 30 Percent

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/16/2014 -- The No Risk Automation newsletter reported on another algorithm in the literature titled, "A GA-Based Method to Reduce Material Handling." This genetic algorithm (GA), suggested authors SS Tseng, FM Chang, and YS Chu, is a way to decrease activities of material handling, waiting time, and material storage. They argued these issues are vital to increasing productivity. The research accurately suggested that in manufacturing the largest percent of product cost is related to material handling, which cannot add product value, but does waste costs. The authors extended this assertion noting that material handling accounts for 30 – 75% of the total manufacturing costs, but a good design of material handling can reduce the plant's cost by 15 -30%. AGV can be a buffer to decrease storage activities and decrease waiting times. While the efficacy of AGV solutions is not in question, the need to find an honest broker, a neutral third party, is vastly important. Hearing all sides of the AGV selection process is entering mediation and compromise is required.

Product Damage Increases Cost of Manufacturing Avoidable with Precise AGV Automation Solutions

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/12/2014 -- The No Risk Automation newsletter reviewed how damaging mistakes are to the bottom-line. Palletized goods are hustled through manufacturing plants and distribution facilities 24/7. Pallets are often dropped, lifted, and pushed across hard floors. Pallet damage often results in damaged products and "unsaleable" merchandise that averages about 1% of gross sales for retailers and distributors. The elimination of this damaged merchandise must be calculated into the return-on-investment (ROI) when considering the purchase of an AGV. Independent third party consultants must as for the damage rate in assessing the prospective cost-savings in AGV selection. The most expensive part of operating a truck is the cost of the driver. This cost includes wages and benefits, accidents, injury, lost time, and errors. Human drivers cannot operate without breaks for instruction, food, and stretching, whereas robotic pallet trucks, priced at under $100K each, operate at significantly higher duty cycles, improving capital performance.

John Hayes Automation Referee Explained Labor and Equipment of New Projects Overlooked

Selection of AGVs Limited by Political Factions Within Manufacturing Operations

Sawant and Suhas S. Mohite attempted to create a composite weight based on multiple attribute decision support for the selection of Automated Guide Vehicles (AGVs). The authors set out to address the issue of effective evaluation and selection of AGVs, using various mathematical and systems modeling approaches. The development of an intelligent material handling equipment selection system advisor (MHESA) was developed. The authors surmised that there were several limitations of existing expert systems for material handling equipment selection, suggesting the most of them are incomplete prototypes that consider only a limited number of equipment types and attributes. What was missing from this intensive and detailed data-base research was the very political nature of AGV selection within organizations.
Hayes, minus a whistle, black and white shirt, and cap, has quickly become the unbiased resource to help companies evaluate what AGV (automated guided vehicle) is most suitable for their operation. There are often different constituencies in large manufacturing plants and distribution centers who have a point of view as to which AGV solution is best. Hayes is neutral and listens to all the arguments and negotiates a best-practice, cost-effective solution with which everyone can accept.

Project Management of AGV Solution Vital Reported John Hayes

The automation trouble often starts when the distribution center managers or manufacturing plant managers meet the project implementation team. The implementation group does not know what the customer has said or what the sales rep has promised before this initial meeting. The team is rewarded for increasing project margins and will be very strict in the application of the contract and the specification. A customer advocate is needed. A customer project manager (often an experienced third party with extensive experience in these types of implementations) is needed. The project manager is the watchdog on the implementation on behalf of the customer.
Hayes suggested, "Until automation selection is based on knowledge and information, vendors will make suggestions about solutions that may or may not be in the warehouse, distribution, or manufacturers' best interest.
AGV Vendor Selection Must Be Right According to John Hayes

When an automation vendor is called to look at a specific problem it becomes a nail, because the vendor has a hammer. Too often companies incorrectly invest time and money going down a rabbit hole only to discover they cannot afford an AGV solution. Sometimes the problem may be easily resolved as a simple operational issue. A great application to a vendor means a sale; it may or may not be a great application.

Without precise specifications about the automation required and the outcomes expected, automation vendors sell what they have and the results will be disappointing. Many people say that the devil is in the details; in this case there are major costs in the details.
November No Risk Automation Shared Ergonomics of AGVs

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/14/2014 -- The November issue of No Risk Automation, a monthly e-news publication, discussed the increased focus on ergonomic considerations for automation. Until recently ergonomics has not been a word associated with automated guided vehicles (AGVs). AGVs have been considered stand-alone pieces of equipment that moved pallets, large bins, and totes. This perception and usage is changing, as there are now a few select companies that are taking AGV technology and applying it to applications that directly interface with humans. From moving parts to people for picking or manufacturing to mobile build assemblies, AGVs are now more than ever working with people instead of replacing them.
Generally speaking the most cost effective applications must have the economy of scale and usually involve towing carts long distances.

This month's newsletter also explored how for many years AGV (automated guided vehicle) providers have known that there is a goldmine of applications for DCs (distribution centers) but the costs have always been prohibitive. From placing product from end of aisle locations into racking up to 35 feet to automated travel with human picking, these applications are common and a good fit for automation solutions; as the costs of systems comes down, there will be a large shift in focus from manufacturing to distribution from the solutions providers.

No Risk Automation Magazine Discussed Top Mistakes in Automation Selection

No Risk Automation Magazine Discussed Top Mistakes in Automation Selection

Monroe, NC -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/06/2014 -- Last month's issue of No Risk Automation, a monthly e-news publication, discussed the top three mistakes made in automation selection:

-Not concentrating on the little things.

-Believing that the technology or the guidance is important.

-Failing to prepare a written specification of what is wanted and needed at the DC or manufacturing plant floor.

The October newsletter also addressed the few differences between automation at the DC and manufacturing plant floor. In both environments automation is simply used to move product from place to place safely and in an efficient manner. The real difference between the two is in the number of applications and the complexity of those applications. The real winner for automation is manufacturing, due to the sheer number of movements of product and the ease with which transportation can occur.
