PCB Fabrication China Discusses Green Technologies in PCB Fabrication

Shenzhen City, China -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/03/2014 -- "Green" and "environmentally friendly" are ill-defined terms. In general, these terms refer to manufacturing that involves the replacement of toxic substances with less toxic materials, the elimination of materials or processing steps, and less consumption of chemicals (i.e., more efficient or higher yield processing, reduction of water use, reduction of energy use, less space requirement, smaller equipment foot print, and recycling and on-site recovery of materials).

Direct Metallization

This family of processes eliminates the electroless copper process. These processes typically have fewer process steps, use less rinse water, have less floor space requirement, and use less toxic chemicals. Direct metallization processes include:

Palladium-based

These processes pretty much follow the classic electroless copper processing step sequence, except the sequence ends with the application of the palladium catalyst, followed by the activation, then skips the electroless bath and proceeds to copper electro-plating.

Carbon or Graphite-based

Using small carbon or graphite particles to render the dielectric hole-wall electro-platable, this process involves very few steps.

Conductive Polymer-based

The process of using a non-conductive monomer to coat the board surface follows an oxidation step that forms a conductive polymer from the non-conductive monomer. The polymer then facilitates copper electro-plating on the non-conductive dielectric hole wall. An example of such a conductive polymer formation is the oxidation of pyrrole to poly-pyrrole, using permanganate as the oxidation agent. The permanganate is reduced to manganese dioxide, which is insoluble and needs to be further reduced to the soluble manganese Mn2+ ion. Another example is the polymerization of "EDOT" (3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene) to poly-EDOT

PCB Manufacturer China Introduces New Valor Supply Chain Tools for Electronics Manufacturing

Shenzhen City, China -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/09/2014 -- PCB Manufacturing China today announced the Valor® Information Highway and the Valor Warehouse Management products, two supply chain-focused tools designed to enhance Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) effectiveness and assist electronics manufacturers in reducing material costs. Materials accuracy is a critical factor in PCB assembly operation since materials make up the bulk of manufacturing costs. At the same time, it presents a challenge to traditional ERP where inventory discrepancies compromise materials ordering and planning operations. Mentor Graphics has developed key supply chain solutions to complement the ERP/MRP operation systems.

Together, the two new products provide real-time material consumption and spoilage data, facilitating total materials management and traceability over the entire warehouse infrastructure, logistics, shop floor storage areas and direct points of use. For the first time, manufacturing teams can easily access data from all aspects of the shop floor, supply chain, quality, planning and product engineering through a single software suite.

"Valor Information Highway gives me complete visibility and control of our shop floor operation through a single source of information linked to ERP and MES reporting," stated Stefan Schnake, Manufacturing Process Support, Phoenix Contact, a global manufacturer of components, systems and services in the electronics industry. "Access to real-time detailed data allows me to effectively manage my operation and report accurately to my customers, which is critical for our success."

Valor Information Highway – One Source for Accurate Shop Floor Data

The Valor Information Highway product provides accurate, real-time access to warehouse and shop floor information, available in the highest level of detail. This product is unique in that it does not require complex integration, avoiding the high cost of customization with various engineering services, nor does it create complex dependencies between systems. Users have a single consistent source of data, both live and on-demand, that represents the entire integrated shop floor environment—from engineering and planning to performance, materials, tracking and quality information. The information and reports that can be generated from the Valor Information Highway product provide essential performance and traceability data to drive continuous improvement.

Valor Warehouse Management – Effectively Manage All Materials In One Solution

The new Valor Warehouse Management tool provides the industry's most comprehensive materials management solution — a single environment spanning multiple local and remote warehouses and shop floor storage, from initial material receipt, logistics and storage management. The Valor Warehouse Management product is easy to use, comprising automated PDA-based material task assignment and advanced configurable logistics rules, including both Kanban and "just-in-time" material delivery protocols. This assures optimum performance and efficiency of materials logistics and warehouse organization. Automated direct gathering of consumption and spoilage data ensures complete and accurate inventory, which avoids unexpected materials shortage and material overstocking.

"Valor products have demonstrated significant operational improvements and high return on investment for our customers in the areas of NPI, process preparation and shop floor operations," stated Dan Hoz, general manager of Mentor Graphics Valor Division. "I am confident that the new tools will also provide the high value that our customers have come to expect from our products, by improving their ability to control material costs and reduce waste."

PCB Manufacturer China Discusses a Strategy for Design-Through-Manufacturing a Whole New Beginning

Technology Convergence Critical for PCB Manufacturing

Shenzhen City, China -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/04/2014 -- The PCB industry is showing signs of life, which indicates that the pendulum is swinging in a more positive direction economically, but we're not quite ready to uncork the champagne. A June 2013 report by Research & Markets forecast that the global PCB fabrication industry alone will reach about $94 billion in 2017, with a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.1% during this period. If we include assembly and test, the prediction exceeds $1 trillion. This is encouraging news for those of us in the PCB design, fabrication and assembly markets, driven by consumer demand for high-end products loaded with high-performance features and functionality.

Much of the growth will be in the Asia/Pacific market, with China leading as a primary manufacturing country, particularly with the increasing appreciation of Chinese currency and increasing costs of raw materials, such as copper. As a result, today's designers will be challenged to develop sophisticated new products that can be manufactured cost-effectively and efficiently.

Another trend reported by iSuppli (IHS iSupply Outsourced Manufacturing, November 2012) focusing on electronics OEMs indicates their plans to reduce the number of contract manufacturers they work with over the next year. This decision to reduce vendors is based on the need to trim their outsourced manufacturing suppliers to reduce costs, which include EMS provider and original design manufacturers (ODM). Currently, OEMs average about eight external contractors. Critical changes that OEM decision-makers must undertake with their vendors include lead-time reduction and price negotiation, according to the iSuppli study, which covered OEMs in all facets of the electronics industry: computing, communications, automotive/transportation, consumer electronics, and industrial. With China remaining a lower-cost labor force, other concerns include labor law compliance and product quality. Again, electronics companies who design and manufacture products will need to determine best practices to survive during these turbulent times since the PCB industry appears to be on an upward path.

PCB Manufacturer China Discusses How to Develop a Custom Electronics Project

The art of electronics is the art of transforming a thought or idea in to concrete reality by designing and making it.

Shenzhen City, China -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/02/2014 -- Building on the knowledge, experience, and work of others makes transforming that idea to a real electronics project easier. However, while electronic project will be unique, they all follow the same sequence to transition from thought to reality.

Selecting the Project
Any electronics project starts with the decision of what to build. The more formed the idea is, the easier it will be to tackle. Of course all designs shift along the way as the idea intersects with reality, what can be done, and what building blocks are available. Developing that solid idea of what one want the project to do, look like, how people will interact or control it, and how it will be used allows one to find other projects with similar elements that can be used for inspiration on the design and construction of the own project.

Designing the Circuit

The first major step in developing an electronic project is to design the electronics. This is where building off previous projects with good documentation, getting inspiration from other projects, and application notes, design guides, and datasheets can be invaluable. Unless one want to use the project as a way to get hands on learning, its best to focus on designing portions of the electronics that are new or unique to the project. Portions of a project like a power supply or regulator have been designed thousands or millions of times and can be purchased or implemented through good application note examples which saves time, money, and frustration as to build and test the project.

Build a Prototype
Once an electronic schematic for the project has been created (or a schematic for a portion of the project), building a breadboard prototype is the next step in the evolution the project. Building a prototype or breadboard circuit is not always required but it is one of the best ways to discover any errors made in the design of the circuit before it is finalized in a printed circuit board and soldered together. Breadboard prototypes don't work for all projects due to their inherent limitations, but they should be used whenever possible to limit the frustration of troubleshooting a circuit for designer errors.

Build a permanent Circuit

Once the design has been built and tested on a breadboard or otherwise prototyped, the design can be built as a permanent circuit. The best option for most projects is to build a PCB using low cost or free PCB design software and use a low cost PCB prototyping service to have the PCB made. Alternatively a project can be soldered together using a perf board, although a perf board is more suited for prototyping or more temporary projects. Either method for making a permanent circuit can work, but will likely require testing and prototyping to catch those small errors that often pop in translation to a final circuit. Always budget some time and funding for an additional PCB run if one can.

Finish the Project
Once the permanent circuit has been made it should be mounted in an enclosure along with support components (batteries, sensors, etc.) and user interface hardware (buttons, display, etc.). If the final product needs to look a certain way, it is best to plan for the final enclosure, mounting holes, and position of each component as the PCB is being designed to hopefully avoid any need to redesign the PCB or enclosure. Many project enclosures or project boxes are available for purchase but most lack any stylish design elements. If the final look of the project is important, either one can make the enclosure on a budget with hand moldable plastics, create custom silicon molds, or use a 3D printer to design a truly custom enclosure.
