Statin Side Effects: Are the Risks Outweighing Its Benefits?

The side effects of statin can be underwhelming, making it appear as if the risks outweigh the benefits of these powerful cholesterol-lowering medications. Read through and consider weighing the risks and benefits.

Winchester, KY -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/21/2014 -- People having high cholesterol level are often prescribed with statin to reduce the risk of stroke or a heart attack. Often times, people taking this medication will take them for the rest of their lives for maintenance, not unless manage to stabilize their cholesterol levels through exercise, diet, weight loss and nutritional supplement. This can make the statin side effects even harder to manage.

Some people may think that taking statin is not worth it just to have its benefits. Though, little do they know, the statin side effects can be reduced for it to be bearable.

One of the most common side effects of statin, muscle pain – this gives the person the feeling of soreness, tiredness or weakness in their muscles. The pain may range from mild to severe, which interferes with the person's regular activities and makes it difficult. For example a simple climbing of the stairs or even walking can be so uncomfortable and exhausting.

Occasionally a person may have a liver damage and experience digestive problems. This is because statin stimulates the production of enzymes of the liver that help in the digestion of food. The increase in the production of liver enzymes may develop nausea, gas, diarrhea, or constipation after taking statin. This is also a rare side effect and people who are experiencing this already have digestive problems prior to taking the medication.

A person may also develop a rash or flushing after taking a statin, especially if the person take the medication in unison with some other drug like niacin. Taking aspirin prior to taking the statin medication may help, however it is always wise to seek the doctor's advice and prescription.

Development of type 2 diabetes is also a risk of taking statin, this is possible for statin increase the production of blood sugar (blood glucose). The risk maybe small but it is alarming enough leading the Food and Drug Administration t issue warning on statin labels regarding blood glucose levels and diabetes.

A neurological side effect is the most alarming of all. FDA warns statin labels that some people are experiencing memory loss and confusion while taking the medication. Though, this side effect is said to be reversible once a person stopped taking the drug. On the bright side, it has been evident that statin induces brain activity and may help patients with dementia or Alzheimer's. This is still under observation and studies to further prove the benefit.

It is advised not to stop the medication and talk to the doctor first. There may be side effects taking the medication but these experts can give advises on how to reduce the risks and make it bearable.
About CoQ10 and Statins
Statins are a type of drug generally prescribed to people with high cholesterol levels or at risk of heart disease and stroke. Statins block the liver enzyme that creates cholesterol in order to reduce the total amount of cholesterol in the blood. Some amount of cholesterol is required for good health, especially HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, but having too much cholesterol can lead to hardened arteries or the buildup of plaque inside arteries, which increases the chance of heart attack or stroke.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/statin-side-effects-are-the-risks-outweighing-its-benefits-531387.htm

Media Relations Contact

Galin Georgiev
CoQ10 and Statins
Telephone: 606-612-5293
Email: Click to Email Galin Georgiev
Web: http://statinsideeffect.com/

STATINS: A Life Saver or a Silent Killer?

Researchers and studies stated that Statins have adverse side effects. Would the benefits overweigh the risks? Or will an alternative give benefits out of the doubt?

Winchester, KY -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/23/2014 -- For the past previous months, the risk of taking the drugs called Statin has been the main concern of most health-related news as it draws debates from different researchers and health specialists. This controversial issue highlights a range of unintended side effects of these cholesterol-busting drugs.

Statins are medicines known for lowering the level of cholesterol in the blood. They do this by curbing the production of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the liver. High levels of 'bad cholesterol' can increase the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke and of developing cardiovascular disease. Hence, these drugs are prescribed by doctors to help protect healthy but high-risk people from heart disease and to prevent heart attacks and strokes in people who have already had problems.

However, effects identified in studies were published by the British Medical Journal. The articles were written by John Abramson from Harvard medical school, and Aseem Malhotra, a UK cardiologist, who both claimed statins caused harmful side-effects and did not reduce mortality. Statins' adverse effects include liver problems, acute kidney failure, muscle weakness and cataracts.

Conversely, Professor Rory Collins from University of Oxford criticized these articles and emphasized that fears over statins use are misleading the public. He said that BMJ articles had "overestimated the side effects of statin therapy by more than 20 times". This was likely to have encouraged people to either stop taking statins or not to start treatments in the first place.

Recently, statins are once again in the spotlight as the National Health Service considers increasing the use of the drugs (BBC News). It says NHS estimates 7,000 lives are saved by the drugs each year by cutting the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Currently, doctors are meant to offer statin tablets to people who have a 20% chance of developing cardiovascular disease over 10 years, based on risk factors such as their age, sex, whether they smoke and what they weigh. But the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which advises the NHS on its use of drugs, has proposed that people with as low as a 10% risk should be offered the treatment. Nonetheless, the draft guidance is still under consultation and a final decision will be made probably by the end of July.

Despite all the anti-cholesterol propaganda, cholesterol is proven to have vital role in the human body's chemistry, like oxygen is. According to Jimmy Moore in his book entitled "Cholesterol Clarity", indiscriminate use of statins to get cholesterol numbers as low as possible may do more harm than good.

Studies found an alternative to statins which is called Ubiquinol, an active form of Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ10). CoQ10 is made by the same enzyme in the body as cholesterol. This leads to the conclusion that treatment with the popular cholesterol-lowering medications known as statins reduces the amount of circulating CoQ10 in the blood stream. Therefore medical experts suggest to replenish depleted levels by taking up supplements like the so called Ubiquinol.

According to Prof. Svend Mortensen, other heart failure medications block rather than enhance cellular processes and may have side effects. Supplementation with CoQ10, which is a natural and safe substance, corrects a deficiency in the body and blocks the vicious metabolic cycle in chronic heart failure called the energy starved heart.

In spite of the incessant debates rolling over statins' issue, considering these supplements as alternatives would possibly be a great help to justify the effectiveness of these cholesterol-busting drugs and at the same time lessen the risks of its adverse side effects.

CoQ10 the Wonder Pill: Everything That One Has to Know About This "Medical Miracle"

If coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) was a drug, pharmaceutical companies will be brawling over its patent. It literally is the “wonder pill” for curing and giving an aid to heart diseases. As a matter of fact that there are reports that people who have near death experiences recovered, and now look and feel a decade younger, just with the aid of this nutrient. Does it sound too good to be true?

Winchester, KY -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/30/2014 -- Way back in 1957, Dr. Frederick Crane used the mitochondria from the cell of cattle hearts to locate CoenzymeQ10 or CoQ10. These are found to be a potential cure for cancer, AIDS, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, asthma and other life threatening diseases. Actually, CoQ10 can be found on man's own mitochondria as well.

On top of CoQ10's potential to cure life threatening diseases, it also has antioxidant properties that help fight damaging particles in the body known as free radicals. These free radicals damage the cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause the death of the cell. Scientists and health experts believed that free radicals expedite the aging process and contribute to a number of health risks as well including cancer and heart disease. Antioxidants like CoQ10 can neutralize free radicals and may lessen or even help avoid some of the damages they cause.

CoQ10 has quite a long list of medical and health benefits. But what are CoQ10's real benefits?

At this point, there are no complete and concrete evidence for CoQ10's benefits. Most of the said benefits are theoretical and are just CoQ10's potentials. Further studies need to be conducted in order to support these theories. Once proven, this truly will be the biggest medical breakthrough.

Presently, however, CoQ10 has shown clear signs of treating high blood pressure or hypertension. Individuals with high blood pressure are found to have less CoQ10 than normal and it is proven in the past studies that CoQ10 reduces blood pressure. Treating CoQ10 is the only application that has garnered a "B" rating. With that being said, there is a good, concrete, scientific evidence that CoQ10 really is beneficial . Though of course, further studies need to be conducted to be completely confident.

Although CoQ10 is naturally occurring in the human body, it does not necessarily mean that it is free from side effects. Thus, CoQ10's side effects are mild. Users experience allergies due to increase of CoQ10 in their system. There are also reports of rashes and itching.

Another notable side effect of CoQ10 is it lowers the body's blood sugar and persons with hypoglycemia or taking medications that regulate blood sugar level should consult a doctor first prior to taking this supplement.

CoQ10 lowers blood pressure, that's a fact – which actually is beneficial to some. But with individuals who already have a low blood pressure or those who already are on medication to control their blood pressure should be cautious before going with the CoQ10 regimen.

There are tons of benefits that man can get out of CoQ10, though it is always to be cautious on what the body is getting for some reactions may lead to discomforts. Private and independent research bodies are still studying CoQ10, who knows, one day man will have cure for cancer and other life threatening diseases.
