Sovereign Health Launches New Pain Program in San Clemente

San Clemente, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/11/2016 -- Sovereign Health, a leading national provider of behavioral health treatment services, has launched a new Pain Program at its San Clemente treatment center, designed to assist individuals whose pain has led to an addiction to prescription and/or illegal drugs. Sovereign's integrative approach to pain management focuses on the biological, social, environmental and personality variables that trigger pain. Sovereign's mission is to reduce patients' primary reliance on addictive medication and to enhance their nonpharmacological pain management.

"Many individuals suffering from chronic pain are forced to take excessive medication to cope with their pain. As a result of their suffering, they may isolate from loved ones, experience unpleasant changes in mood, sleep and appetite," says Roxana Lal, Associate Program Director, Special Programs. "Sovereign Health is not a Pain Management Program; rather, it's a Pain Recovery Program, where we'll help patients unlearn poor habits and replace them with taking medications as prescribed and developing healthy coping habits. My ultimate goal is to have patients learn to live a healthier life with the injuries they have."

Approximately 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, defined as pain that lasts longer than six months. Chronic pain can be mild or excruciating, episodic or continuous, merely inconvenient or totally incapacitating. With chronic pain, pain signals remain active in the nervous system for months or even years. This can take both a physical and emotional toll on a person.

To be eligible for admission to the Pain Program, patients need to be 18 years of age or older and cannot be managed on an outpatient basis. For patients needing treatment from chemical dependency, Sovereign Health offers the following levels of care: detox, residential treatment center (RTC), partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP). During detox, the patient's medical treatment is supervised by a Sovereign prescribing addiction psychiatrist who helps to safely wean the patient off addictive substances. A licensed residence provides social-model detox to prepare patients for their entry into the next phase of treatment. During RTC, PHP and IOP, patients continue to receive 24-hour assistance with daily living skills and medication management, and monitoring to prevent self-harm and suicide. Patients receive two hours of individual therapy and one hour of case management per week. Patients also have the opportunity to meet with an alcohol and other drug counselor throughout the week, but will have to participate in different group therapies.

Sovereign Health's Pain Program is dedicated to ending the patient's medication dependency. To accomplish this goal, the treatment team focuses on the whole person and his or her individual needs. The program's staff will help patients work on lowering pain levels; improving the quality of life; identifying the negative emotions that reinforce pain; re-establishing meaning, purpose and social relationships; decreasing dependency on medical professionals; and refocusing energies on functioning rather than limitations.

Common sources of pain include headaches, joint inflammation, injury and backaches. Other forms of pain include tendinitis, sinusitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and aches affecting specific parts of the body, such as the shoulders, pelvis and neck. Generalized muscle or nerve pain can also develop into a chronic condition. Chronic pain may originate with an initial trauma, injury or infection, or there may be an ongoing cause of pain. Some people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage.

"I'm in recovery myself, and I've been clean and sober for 11 years," says Weiss. "I found an audience I can relate to and we share a mutual bond. It helps when we laugh. Also, it's a way to have fun in a difficult time in our lives."

Monica M. Powers, Psy.D., Presenting at Sovereign Health Continuing Education on Oct. 12

San Clemente, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/29/2016 -- Sovereign Health, a leading national provider of behavioral health treatment services, is proud to announce that Monica Powers, Psy.D., Director of Clinical Development and Training at Sovereign Health, will give a presentation, "A Portrait of Resilience," at a continuing education (C.E.) event on Oct. 12, 2016, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. PDT at 1211 Puerta Del Sol, San Clemente, CA 92673. To RSVP for this event, click here or call 949-304-3362.

In reference to persons dealing with traumatic experiences and recovery, it is often confounding how some people are able to recover, while others struggle and drown in it. This presentation by Dr. Powers explores the common attributes that are associated with resilient people and discusses survivors of trauma and the difficulties the patient population often faces. The presentation will also provide examples of what skills can increase resilience in people across different circumstances.

"The focus of resilience especially in mental health is important," says Dr. Powers. "Our ability to course correct and recover is the cornerstone of the work we do, and helping others to build resilience results in a decrease in relapse behaviors, especially in times of struggle. It's an important lesson for clinicians to pass on to patients and embody themselves."

Dr. Powers is a Los Angeles native who completed her doctorate at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Prior to obtaining her doctorate, she worked in executive relations with a major financial institution where she learned the art of listening. She has been with Sovereign Health where she has served in a multitude of roles for almost three years.

Sovereign Health's continuing education courses meet the qualifications for C.E. credits required by the Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC), formerly known as the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors. There is no cost to attend this program and earn one free C.E. credit. Lunch will be provided.

Sovereign Health of San Clemente Launches a New Evening Intensive Outpatient Program

San Clemente, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/15/2016 -- Sovereign Health, a leading national provider of behavioral health treatment services, has launched a new evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at its San Clemente facility. The evening IOP, which provides treatment for adults dealing with substance use disorders, takes place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. PDT, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The program runs from four to eight weeks and has been developed to accommodate patients who are unable to receive treatment during the day due to scheduling conflicts, including work schedules. The evening IOP is designed to provide a supportive and solution-oriented intervention tailored to each individual. Treatment intensity, focus and length will be based on the patients' needs.

"This program is for the working professional, and we set goals that are attainable and realistic," said Roxana Lal, Associate Program Director – Special Programs of Sovereign Health of San Clemente. "We understand that people can be busy with other obligations, for example work or school, and that's why we've created the evening IOP. We want to help these professionals who are struggling with substance use disorders, but need to continue working or attending school while they receive treatment."

In the new evening IOP, patients are required to attend a minimum of nine hours of counseling per week. In addition, the program will consist of any combination of group, individual or family counseling, which will include addiction education and relapse prevention. All patients will work with their designated individual therapist and counselor to develop a treatment plan, as well as a continuing care plan, following their discharge.

Group topics will be patient-driven as opposed to program-driven and tailored to address the specific recovery needs of each group. Patients will receive complete case management services designed to specifically address his or her personal needs, which will also include psychological testing or a psychiatric evaluation, and a physician will be available to provide medical and clinical consultation.

The overall goal of the program is to provide a safe, therapeutic environment that encourages and promotes recovery. The program is abstinence-based and appropriate for individuals for whom abstaining appears warranted. Sovereign Health attempts to support and foster healthy, responsible changes in behavior that can lead to healthier lives for the patient, their families and those in the community.

Education and family involvement will be key components of the evening IOP. The support generated by the participation of family and significant others often plays a critical role in the success of a patient's recovery. Educating the family about addiction and recovery is usually helpful in the success of a patient's recovery process. That is why Sovereign Health strongly encourages family involvement in the assessment and treatment process and will integrate it as a required part of treatment.

Sovereign Health's New Q&A on Addiction Treatment Now Live on SovHealth.com

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/09/2016 -- Sovereign Health, a leading national provider of behavioral health treatment services, is pleased to announce a new Q&A feature that's now live on www.sovhealth.com: "Interview: Compassionate clinicians offer hope at Sovereign Health of Los Angeles' Addiction Treatment Program." The interview focuses on the addiction treatment program offered at Sovereign Health of Los Angeles. Donna Hugh, LMFT, CIP, Sovereign Health of Los Angeles' Program Director, discusses the biggest challenges in the treatment of addiction in promotion of Sovereign Health's new partnership with the University of Southern California Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

This Q&A focuses on addiction treatment and discusses timely topics about the misuse of prescription drugs among younger people. Fortunately, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction are treatable conditions that can be successfully managed with evidence-based treatments, education and compassionate care. Providing education on the disease model of addiction can help to reduce the stigmatization of substance use disorders.

"The most profound challenges in treating addicted patients are overcoming the stigma of addiction and shame, and fully understanding the disease model," says Hugh. "It is critical that there is clear and honest communication telling young people the ugly truth about addiction and the consequences of using. Recreational prescription drug use frequently ends in overdose and death."

The new alliance with USC allows Sovereign the opportunity to expand its footprint to a wider audience and bring additional awareness about the mental health and addiction treatment services it provides to patients. By joining forces with USC, Sovereign Health will reach a new audience with a mix of multimedia channels, including ESPN radio spots, billboard advertising, digital marketing products, and VIP season tickets to football games.

Sovereign Health Announces New Transgender Identity Treatment Feature in Psychology Today

San Diego, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/28/2016 -- Sovereign Health announces the publication of a new article in Psychology Today profiling its new Gender Diversity and Transgender Identity service being offered at Sovereign Health's Rancho San Diego facility. The service, which was launched to meet the needs of the growing number of transgender youth, provides a safe and accepting treatment milieu for adolescents with a mental health or dual diagnosis who identify as gender diverse or transgender. The July/August edition of Psychology Today, on newsstands Tuesday, July 5, spotlights Sovereign Health of Rancho San Diego's Gender Diversity and Transgender Identity service that supports adolescents with nonconforming gender identity, while they receive treatment for primary substance abuse, dual diagnosis, eating disorder or mental health issues.

"Because of the extraordinarily high suicide rate among transgender youth, it is essential that we provide support for these adolescents and their families with affirming psychotherapeutic practices," says Marilee Maki Wasell, Ph.D., Sovereign Health of Rancho San Diego's Site Training Director. "Gender-diverse youth may experience shame and fear around their identities. Affirming psychological interventions for the youth and their families are essential in mediating the potential of depression, suicide, self-harming behaviors or addiction."

Sovereign Health of Rancho San Diego's Gender Diversity and Transgender Identity service follows the guidelines for Transgender Affirmative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TA-CBT), which is targeted at depression and suicidality, and is founded on a trans-affirming perspective. TA-CBT retains the core components of cognitive behavioral therapy and focuses on three domains: psychoeducation, challenging transphobic negative self-beliefs and encouraging trans-affirming social connectedness. In addition, the multifaceted transgender service includes neurofeedback, individual, group and family psychotherapy sessions, and experiential treatments, such as yoga, music, art and equine therapy.

According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, transgender youths face challenges from their peers at school and at home. In addition, many transgender youths also face challenges from school officials who single out these youths by refusing to respect their gender identity and punish them for expressing that identity. A national survey by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), founded in 1990 to end discrimination, found that 75 percent of transgender youths feel unsafe at school. Moreover, the study found, that many of those who were able to persevere had significantly lower GPAs and were more likely to miss school out of concern for their safety, and were less likely to plan on continuing their education.

Dr. Wasell is a clinical psychologist and the Site Training Director at Sovereign Health of Rancho San Diego. She has over 10 years of licensed clinical experience. Her professional interests include: clinical supervision, ethics, trauma, severe mental illness, psychological assessment, LGBTQ and the psychological impact of social media.

Sovereign Health of San Clemente Launches Next Step Initiative

San Clemente, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/16/2016 -- Sovereign Health of San Clemente is proud to announce the launch of Next Step, a new component of Sovereign Health's Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Next Step offers patients individualized plans that focus on academic and career motivation, providing resources to help them re-enter the workforce. Sovereign Health counselors help patients assess their educational and career goals, build their resumes, and provide interview preparation. In addition, patients engage in life skill groups and workshops.

"Many lose hope for the future after a life of addiction or mental health struggles," says Greg Young, Senior Director of Clinical Innovation at Sovereign Health Group. "Next Step provides the tools necessary for our patients to continue their aspirations beyond treatment and reintegrate back into the outside community. We are very excited to bring the next generation of visionary recovery services such as Next Step to our patients for their long-term success."

In addition to career development, the Next Step initiative also encourages patients to give back to the community. Sovereign Health of San Clemente has partnered with the San Clemente Watershed Task Force to support efforts to reduce pollutants in San Clemente beaches and participates in the "Adopt a Beach" cleanup program at North Beach and Linda Lane Beach.

"Next Step often emulates a life poem that I have adhered to for many years and the question it poses," says Jerry Ibarra, Program Coordinator at Sovereign Health of San Clemente. "'Dream Deferred,' by Langston Hughes, asks the question if dreams are not met by our own expectations then to what effect, negative or positive, will that lost dream have on us? For the patients reclaiming themselves in life, Next Step allows them to reclaim dreams, motivation and consider the next steps to get there."

Sovereign Health of San Clemente's IOP program helps patients create a stable environment by giving them structure and support, while they establish a solid foundation for recovery.
The Rock to Recovery program is scheduled to open at Sovereign Health of Los Angeles in June 2016.
Rock to Recovery's founder, Wesley Geer, is excited about this new collaboration with Sovereign Health. Dr. Raphael will be presenting later this month at the Sovereign Health of San Clemente main campus, offering a seminar to engage professionals and teach them about this treatment. The lecture, Innovation Treatments: Understanding Nutritionally-Assisted Detox in Addiction, will be offered on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from 11:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. This event will offer a networking opportunity, as well as address how NAD treatment works, optimal patients for this type of therapy, and why NAD is a beneficial treatment option for those in need of detox services.

Sovereign Health of San Clemente to Host Webinar on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

San Clemente, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/13/2016 -- Sovereign Health of San Clemente introduces a new era in treating depression: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). To launch this revolutionary treatment at the San Clemente facility, Sovereign Health will host a much-anticipated webinar on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. PST. The webinar, which will provide one continuing education (C.E.) credit, will include a special presentation entitled, <a class="extlink" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" title=""A New Era in Treating Depression: Sovereign Health Introduces Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation,"" href="https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/9080468884299162369">"A New Era in Treating Depression: Sovereign Health Introduces Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation," by Manish Sheth, M.D., Ph.D. To RSVP or for questions, contact Jessica Wilson at 949-324-3768 or click here.

"We are enthusiastic to be bringing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation treatment to our program at San Clemente," says Ash Bhatt, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at Sovereign Health. "This form of therapy allows for patients to achieve relief from symptoms of major depression, without many of the negative side effects often associated with oral medications. Whenever possible, it is ideal to be able to provide a patient with care that provides them optimal relief, especially when remission has not been attained using traditional pharmaceuticals. TMS has not only shown symptom reduction in the treatment of refractory major depression, but it is also showing promise in many other areas of physical and mental health."

TMS is a non-invasive breakthrough in depression treatment in which magnetic pulses are sent through neuropathways activating mood centers in the brain. This innovative therapy offers new hope for treatment-resistant depression. FDA-approved in 2008, TMS clinical trials consistently indicate 50% remission outcomes, and as high as 75% response to treatment. During the webinar, attendees will learn more about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and how to identify a candidate for TMS.

Dr. Sheth is licensed and board certified, both in Psychiatry and in Addiction Medicine. He currently serves as the Co-Medical Director for the Trinity Medical Center Behavioral Health Unit, and has experience working with patients with depression, Bi-Polar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and a range of various other conditions.

This webinar is approved for one contact hour by the California Board of Registered Nursing and meets the qualifications for one C.E. credit, per the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) and the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC).
