Texas Eye Care Center Shares Guide to Common Eye Disorders

Omni Eye Care Center has produced a guide to common disorders to help inform potential patients on symptoms and treatments

Plano, TX -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/26/2014 -- Omni Eye Care Center in Plano, Texas has released a breakdown of common eye disorders and conditions that affect many people who may not realize what their symptoms of discomfort or irritation indicate. In Texas, allergies are a common problem, with many suffering the effects of high levels of mold, pollen, dust and cedar in the air throughout the year. Allergies can cause ocular discomfort in the form of swelling, tearing, itching, dryness and redness, depending on the irritant. These symptoms arise when histamines are released in response to allergens. These symptoms can be easily treated by prescription eye drops that inhibit histamine production.

Blepharitis is a common condition characterized by eyelid swelling. Treatment for blepharitis normally includes daily warm-compress application, eyelid scrubbing and antibiotic ointment.

Cataracts are considered an unwelcome but normal part of aging. This common condition affects the eye's lens, which is the open part of the eye behind the cornea through which we see. Cataracts cause cloudiness in the lens, with early symptoms resulting in the need for more light when reading or driving. Eventually, cataracts impair vision as the lens becomes opaque and light is blocked. Dr. Taroyan of Omni Eye Care is able to remove cataracts and even replace lenses in the eye when the time comes.

Conjunctivitis, or "pink eye" as it's commonly known, is an infection and inflammation of the conjunctiva. Conjunctiva consists of the clear membranous layer covering the white part of the eye and inner eyelid. Conjunctivitis is either bacterial or viral, and is commonly treated with antibiotic eye drops or oral antibiotics in the case of systemic infection.

Dry eye syndrome is a more common problem than most may realize, and many who have these symptoms may not know that there is an actual condition to blame. Dry eye is most often linked with aging, particularly noticeable in menopausal and post-menopausal women. Dry eye symptoms include irritation, burning, an overcompensation of tearing, and a general feeling of soreness and fatigue. A simple diagnosis is followed by treatment with prescription drops.

Glaucoma is a more complex condition that deteriorates the nerve fiber layer of the optic nerve, leading to peripheral visual field loss and possible full blindness if gone untreated. Glaucoma is easily spotted during routine eye examination and treatment follows.

Diabetic Eye Disease is also a more severe condition whereby the small blood vessels of the retina swell and leak into the retina, causing blurred vision and possible blindness.
Texas Eye Care Center Shares Tips on Protecting Eyes in Bright Sunlight

Omni Eye Care Center in Texas describes the effects of bright sun rays on the eyes and how to protect them in the summer sunshine

Plano, TX -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/12/2014 -- Omni Eye Care Center of Plano, Texas has published a guide to eye care for those bright summer days and describes some of the harmful effects that sunlight can have on unprotected eyes. Public awareness of skin damage is high, and most people are ready with sunscreen, parasols and at least some covering clothing when it's time for the beach or a day in the park. But the dangers of extreme exposure to bright sunlight on the eyes is something many aren't aware of and, as such, do not take the proper precautions against. The damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation on our eyes can be just as severe as it is on the skin. Even short-term exposure to extremely bright sunlight will cause a type of sunburn on the eyes. A condition called "photokeratitis," which is referred to as "snow blindness," is actually a type of sunburn which affects the cornea and conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is a membranous lining which covers the inside of the eyelids and the outside of the eyeball. This sensitive membrane can, like the skin when sunburned, experience inflammation, pain and redness that can last up to 48 hours before symptoms begin to abate.

Simple treatments include a cold cloth placed over the eyes and basic over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. However, the best defense against sun damage to the eyes is the use of quality sunglasses and hats with brims that extend over the face that help dramatically reduce the amount of harmful radiation exposure. Over time, if the eyes are continually exposed to the sun's radiation, the damage compounds into more serious conditions that take longer and more complicated methods of treatment to address. A few days out in the sun may not cause immediate distress, but optometrists warn that cumulative effects increase with every day that eyes go unprotected in intense sunlight. Long-term effects are more serious than just the cosmetic blemish of crow's feet from squinting on the golf course.

A couple years' worth of unprotected eye exposure can lead to an increased likelihood of cataracts, retinal damage and scarring, macular degeneration, eye cancer and eyelid cancer. Also possible is the development of ptergium, a chronic condition that causes the conjunctiva to grow over the cornea and restrict vision. Ptergium requires repeated surgeries to treat and can become a lifelong condition. These results are easy to deter with the proper use of sunglasses designed specifically to reduce the eyes' exposure to radioactive light emitted from the sun. Though it is true that any pair of sunglasses is better than none, not all types of sunglasses provide the same degree of protection. To learn more about the best types of sunglasses and how to better care for and maintain healthy eyes, visit Omni Eye Care Center online at http://www.omnieyecarecenter.com.

For more information on this press release visit: http://www.releasewire.com/press-releases/release-3.htm

Media Relations Contact

Heidi Buckner
Telephone: 972-985-7888
Email: Click to Email Heidi Buckner
Web: http://omnieyecarecenter.com/

Omni Eye Care Center in Plano, Texas, Earns "Accredited Dry Eye Center" Certification

In an effort to better diagnose and treat dry eye disease, Omni Eye Care Center in Plano, TX, has become certified by TearLab as an “Accredited Dry Eye Center.”

Plano, TX -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/25/2014 -- In an effort to better diagnose and treat dry eye disease, a condition that affects millions of people in the United States, Omni Eye Care Center in Plano, Texas, has become certified by TearLab as an "Accredited Dry Eye Center." This designation lets patients know they can expect to be evaluated by an experienced optometrist using the most precise diagnostic equipment available.

Omni Eye Care Center employs TearLab's Osmolarity System to get a quantitative reading on eye dryness levels in patients. "We've found that treatment is much more effective when we know the exact extent to which a patient is affected by dry eye disease," said a staff member at Omni Eye Care Center. In addition to being the most accurate, the dry eye test performed at their eye care clinic in Plano, TX, is also quick and painless.

By analyzing only a miniscule amount of a patient's tear fluid, the Omni Eye Care Center dry eye test provides the optometrist with an exact dryness number. Then, based on a patient's unique level and symptoms, an appropriate course of treatment is prescribed. With treatment, dry eye disease is a highly manageable condition.

Dry eye disease is so common that many people do not even realize their symptoms can be treated. Symptoms include itchy eyes, a burning sensation, or general discomfort in the ocular region. "Our advice is for anybody who's experienced any degree of ongoing eye discomfort to go ahead and have the test done, even if symptoms are mild," said a staff member at Omni Eye Care Center. The dry eye test can be done in conjunction with a routine eye exam.
