Outdoor Power Equipment Winter Preparedness

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/04/2017 -- It is common practice to store a snow thrower at the end of the winter season and completely forget about it until the following year. When storing any power equipment for any length of time, it is very important to run the equipment out of gas or use a quality fuel stabilizer like Ethanol Shield. Using a high octane gasoline or ethanol free fuel is highly recommended.

Checking the scraper bar, spark plugs, skids, shear pins, belts, and other items on a regular basis can ensure a long lasting machine. Remember to always remove any salt from the machine to prevent rust formation. Prior to performing any maintenance, wait until the machine is turned off and has cooled sufficiently.

Not all homeowners have their equipment serviced by professionals. For some, the alternative is to do the yearly maintenance on their own. That means purchasing the correct parts, making sure there is plenty of time set aside to conduct maintenance on the machine, and having the tools needed to do so.

Be sure children are not playing near the snow thrower when in use. Not only can children be injured, objects can become projectiles or can become lodged inside the machine. Pets should be kept safely away as well. Do not forget to wear reflective clothing when operating any machine.

Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse recommends the following procedures when prepping snow throwers for the season:

- DO NOT EVER put a hand inside the chute of the snow thrower – serious injury will occur.

- Always use fresh gasoline and add a fuel stabilizer to maximize its lifespan. High octane or ethanol free fuel will yield the best results. Due to ethanol content, fuel degradation can occur within months and makes starting difficult.

- Replace the fuel filter yearly on applicable models. It's inexpensive and doing so facilitates the inspection of fuel lines and other items that may also degrade due to ethanol. Some snow thrower models will have an in-line filter and others will have a screen type in the fuel tank.

- Check the spark plug and replace it with a new one if necessary. Look for excessive deposits, fouling and gapping before re-using the existing plug.

- Inspect the scraper bar and rotor blades for wear. Rubber rotors (or augers) will typically have wear indicator holes or notches. Both should be replaced at the same time if the machine has two. Be wary of after-market rotors as they are not reinforced with fibers and will wear much faster than original manufacturer parts. If the rotors are worn, then it is a good time to replace the scraper bar as well and vice versa.

- Change the oil yearly whether the snow thrower was used excessively the previous season or not. Oil may not wear out if unused, but can become contaminated and damage internal engine parts. It's best to be safe.

- If the snow thrower is an older 2-cycle model, be sure to use ethanol free fuel or high octane fuel mixed with the correct 2-cycle oil.

- Belts should be checked for signs of wear: cracking and splitting mean that the belt is old and likely to break soon. Fraying and heavy glazing are signs that something else on the snow blower is possibly out of adjustment or otherwise working incorrectly.

- Check plastic wheels for wear, and rubber pneumatic wheels for wear, cracking and leaks.

- Lubricate all necessary points and service all grease fittings. Some snow throwers require grease on the moving parts of the chute to prevent freezing and rust.

It is important for a machine to be in good working order, but so too should the operator. Take breaks when operating a machine outside in the winter time. The more sweat a body produces the damper the clothes become. As such the risk of illness is greater. Stay hydrated as well. Even in cold temperatures humans can become dehydrated and light headed. Wear the proper gear to keep the hands, face, neck, feet and core warm and protected. Depending on the size of the area to clear, taking one or more breaks is advisable.

Important Home or Office Generator Maintenance Tips

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/03/2017 -- Hurricanes, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, floods, winter ice and many of Mother Nature's disastrous gifts can cause power outages. The question is who is prepared? How long will food stay fresh or frozen? Will the sump pump work to keep the basement from flooding? Are there in-home medical devices that do not have their own backup power? Does a home-based business need functional computers after a disaster? Most people no longer own a landline and depend solely on a cell phone. That being said, if the power goes out, how will the devices work? How will friends and family be contacted in an emergency situation?

The answer is to ensure an in-home generator is not only purchases, but also properly maintained. It is essential to check the oil, filters and purchase high octane gasoline. Add a good stabilizer, like Ethanol Shield, into the gas so it stays fresh. Make a list of essential emergency items should a power outage occur and invest in a tote or some type of container to keep items all in one place. Gather all necessary cords and plugs to get that generator going. Investing in duplicate cords and plugs is a good idea and will save time when the power goes out.

In anticipation of unpredictable, extreme regional weather events, Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse recommends keeping a few spare, indispensable generator parts on hand to remain safe and to keep things running as smoothly as possible during the winter months. Once travel and communication are limited by such events, it becomes increasingly difficult to gather what is most needed at a critical time.

In addition to replacing wear items like oil, oil filters, air filters, spark plugs and fuses where applicable, owners should test a generator monthly to make sure it is working properly.

Home generators are divided into two basic types, and choosing which is best comes down to overall electrical requirements, available and convenient fuel sources and budget.

Some people can get by easily with a portable style home generator which runs on gasoline. If all that is required is a few lights, a refrigerator or freezer and sump pump, these units might be the best choice. They will save money in both the long and short term and can be used at other locations.

A home stand-by system offers more convenience, a nearly limitless running time and a more reliable fuel supply since they run on natural gas or propane. Providing 20kw or more, home stand-by units have the potential to power a whole house for days, weeks or even months and years at a time.

Automatic transfer switches are an added convenience and will activate even if someone is not present at the time of an outage. When the lights go out, they come right back on. More intelligently designed transfer switches can even manage electricity and allow occupants to alternate and choose which circuits receive power in order to save fuel or make the best use of available wattage.

Home stand-by generators are a permanent part of a home and require installation by qualified plumbers and electricians. Those interested in adding one should consult an electrician to determine power requirements and to work up an estimate for the total cost of installation.

Here are a few safety tips for properly running a generator:

- NEVER run a generator in a gome or even the garage. Run a generator safely outside, with the exhaust pointed AWAY from doors, windows and vents.

- Plug appliances directly into the generator with the properly rated extension cord OR have an electrician install an appropriate transfer switch. NEVER plug a generator directly into a wall outlet.

- Be sure all cords are free of cuts and have all prongs, especially the grounding pin.

- Let the generator cool before re-fueling. Gasoline spilled on a hot engine or area can ignite.

- NEVER store gasoline in a home or even an attached garage. Keep it AWAY from any fuel burning appliances like a furnace, hot water heater or woodstove – vapors can travel back to their ignition source and ignite.

- Always have a Carbon Monoxide detector in use when running a generator – this can save lives!

- Keep the generator dry and on a dry surface, under an open canopy or tent.

- Dry hands before touching the generator.

- Transport it safely if necessary – in the trunk of a car or bed of a truck, securely fastened.

Achieve a Manicured Lawn and Outdoor Space with Commercial Outdoor Power Equipment Attachments

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2017 -- Commercial attachments can help deliver that manicured lawn and outdoor space. Now is the perfect time for aerators, dethatchers and sulkies.

Aeration can be used for a more direct method of supplying moisture to the roots of the grass. Manual aerating can be tiresome and taxing; using a powered aerator can save time and aches and pains. Aeration is the process of removing plugs, or small tubular pieces of soil from the lawn to allow space for water, nutrients and fertilizer. Directing these essential things right to the soil can help speed up the process of reviving a drought stricken lawn.

Aeration should be performed when the soil is moist enough to allow tines to penetrate easily, but not when soil is muddy and saturated, and never when the soil is dry and hard. Dry or hard turf can be prepared for aeration by watering in advance.

For example, the JRCO Hooker tow-behind aerator comes complete with a two point hitch, rigid frame and swiveling caster wheels that allow the aerator to track directly behind the tow vehicle and prevents jackknifing when backing up. The aerator caster heads swivel, allowing them to turn while aerating. The six floating rotor heads lift independently over rocks and other obstacles, while the other heads continue to aerate. An electric actuator lifts the heads into the transport position.

The soft-plug style of aeration is ideal for lawns, sports fields, golf fairways or anywhere true plug aeration is needed, without the messy compacted core clean-up of a hollow tine aerator. The JRCO Hooker Aerator is many times faster than traditional hollow tine aerators, and is low maintenance with few moving parts and no engine.

A dethatcher is the ultimate spring clean-up tool. It is advisable to use the rake for the first mowing of the spring to remove thatch, embedded leaves and debris. Removing large amounts of thatch will make room for new grass growth, leaving the turfgrass with a clean combed and striped appearance. When seeding, the rake is used to scarify the ground and rake the seed into the soil. Thatch not only chokes a lawn, but it also harbors insects and creates a water barrier; preventing new grass from growing.

For sulkies, there are many kinds on the market. A great place to start, besides Power Equipment Warehouse, is to determine which sulky is needed; single wheel, double wheel, a bull rider, a bronco rider, ProSlide, GoSlide; the choices are vast!

Commercial operators and residential homeowners enjoy the clean, manicured look and reduced labor a sulky provides. Sulkies are not recommended for mowers that are smaller than 48" and belt or gear driven. The amount of "stress" placed on the transmissions of belt/gear driven mowers is just too much and it is not worth it to damage a machine. Mowers smaller than 48" that have a hydro static drive are perfectly fine with a wheeled sulky. The wheel-less sulkies, such as the ProSlide and GoSlide, are best for mowers 48" and larger due to the extra weight. Depending on the operator weight, a weight kit may be needed for balance.

Get Ready for Spring! Great Tips for Post-Winter Lawn Care

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2017 -- As frosted lawns begin to thaw, homeowners become excited to sharpen mower blades and complete all of the other important maintenance lawn care equipment needs. Before beginning the spring equipment maintenance to-do list, here are some great tips for post winter lawn care.

Avoid heavy yardwork in the spring until the soils dries out somewhat. Heavy raking or foot traffic can compact soggy soil and damage new grass shoots. Once the soil has dried, begin raking leftover debris from the fall. Now is the time to address any weed issues by using a pre-emergent weed control to prevent germination. Seeding any dead spots that are now visible is also a good idea. Be sure not to seed and weed at the same time! Weed control products will prevent both weeds and grass seeds from germinating, so knowing which type of grass is present can help determine which to do first, weed or seed.

There are two types of grasses; cool season grasses and warm season grasses. Cool season grasses include fescue, bluegrass and rye. They have two growth spurts; a moderate one in the spring and a big one in the fall. They go dormant or struggle in the hot summer heat so with these grasses it is important to build their strength for the summer months. Fertilizing is a good idea for spring but do not pile it on since the new growth will only be hurt by the summer heat. A broadcast spreader mounted on a mower or utility vehicle can spread almost any type of granular or pelletized seed, fertilizer and even ice melting pellets making this task much easier to accomplish. A broadcast spreader can also help control the amount of product being spread.

Warm season grasses include Zoysia, St. Augustine, Centipede and Bermuda. These grasses thrive in the heat and hate the cold. Warm season grasses begin growing after the last frost and peak mid-summer in the heat. Warm season grasses thrive in the summer, so planting grass seed in late spring when the temperature is reaching almost 70 degrees is a good idea. Fertilizing and weed control are best done at this time but choose which one is most important at the time since weed control also stops grass seed germination. Be selective with the areas being treated with fertilizer.

Power Equipment Warehouse offers a wide variety of outdoor power equipment , making seasonal work much easier by using any of these great products: broadcast spreaders, aerators, dethatchers, sprayers, bed-shapers or any debris cleanup equipment.

Power Equipment Warehouse Snow Blower Safety Tips

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/01/2017 -- Many areas of the country are seeing heavy snowfall and that means heavy snow blower use. Power Equipment Warehouse experts have important advice for snow blower safety this winter.

Top tips for snow removal equipment safety:

- Never add gasoline to the tank while indoors. Always fill the gas tank outside.

- Never add fuel to a running or hot engine.

- Never leave the engine running in an enclosed area.

- If an electric snow blower is used, be sure to use an outdoor extension cord plugged into a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter outlet). If a cord is worn, replace it.

- Walk the area to clean and remove any debris that may be accidentally thrown by the snow blower. This includes rocks, lawn decorations, toys for pets, etc.

- Keep children and pets away from the area being cleared.

- Never place hands or feet near the auger or discharge chute. If the unit becomes clogged, use a snow removal tool and stay behind the machine until all moving parts have stopped.

- Remove the key and spark plug before attempting to adjust, clean or repair the unit. If the unit cannot be fixed, bring it to a qualified service technician. Reputable power equipment retailers have service technicians who attend service schools each year for certification.

- Leave all safety features intact, they are there to protect the user.

- When clearing a driveway at dusk or in the dark, reflective clothing is a must. Secondly, the light on the snow blower should be on. This serves a dual purpose; the machine operator can see what they are removing, and motorists can see the operator!

- Stay hydrated! Exerting energy in the winter can cause dehydration just like summertime.

- Throw snow into an area that will NOT block sight when entering or leaving the driveway.

- Avoid piling snow near the home's foundation. Doing so can cause flooding problems when the snow melts.

- Consider wearing ear and eye protection to prevent loss or damage to hearing or vision.

- When using an electric snow thrower, be alert as to where the cord is at all times.

Home Generator Information 101 & Generator Safety Tips

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/30/2016 -- Winter ice, hurricanes, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flooding and many of Mother Nature's disastrous gifts can cause power outages. Will the computer be functional after a disaster? How will the cell phone charge?
It is imperative to check the condition of a generator to ensure it functions properly. Check the oil and filters, and add fresh, high octane gasoline.
Here are a few safety tips for properly running a generator:

-NEVER run a generator in a house or garage. Run a generator safely outside, with the exhaust pointed AWAY from doors, windows and vents.

-Plug appliances directly into the generator with the properly rated extension cord OR have an electrician install an appropriate transfer switch. NEVER plug a generator directly into a wall outlet.

-Be sure all cords are free of cuts and have all prongs, especially the grounding pin

-Let the generator cool before re-fueling. Gasoline spilled on a hot engine or area can ignite

-NEVER store gasoline in your home or even an attached garage. Keep it AWAY from any fuel burning appliances like a furnace, hot water heater or woodstove – vapors can travel back to their ignition source and ignite.

-Always have a Carbon Monoxide detector in use when running a generator – this can save a life!

-Keep the generator dry and on a dry surface, under an open canopy or tent.

-Dry hands before touching the generator.

-Transport it safely if necessary – in the trunk of a car or bed of a truck, securely fastened.

Chainsaw Safety Tips and Safety Gear

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/31/2016 -- Chainsaws can help to clean up fallen trees from a storm or to prepare cut wood for a bon fire. Whenever using a chainsaw, proper safety gear should be worn at all times. Proper safety steps should be adhered to at all times as well. Check the chain tensions and bar nuts for tightness before attempting to start any chainsaw. Chainsaws should be pointed away from people and objects when starting. Never 'drop-start' a chainsaw and consider starting the chainsaw on the ground or another form of support. Never leave any type of equipment or machinery running and unattended.

Safety gear should include items that cove extremities, eyes and ears. Goggles made with an optical-grade polycarbonate provide greater impact resistance than ordinary goggles. Gloves made from a durable material can provide protection against flying debris and increase grip strength. Leg chaps made with Kevlar are very popular and provide a strong protective layer between the user and the chainsaw. Various lengths of chaps are available as well; chaps can be worn from the hip to the toe and also from the knee to the toe. Wear the proper chap for the job to ensure safety and wellbeing. Boots that are approved as saw protective and offer steel toes are a smart investment. These boots will help protect users from injury or reduce the severity of an injury. Ear protection is also a smart addition to any safety gear. The decibel level of running machinery will vary depending on the specifics of the item being used. Review the owner's manual to help decide which level of ear protection is best. If the chainsaw user plans to work when the sun is just rising or setting, consider adding reflective clothing to ensure the user is visible and does not blend into the landscape. There are a multitude of safety products available on the market today and Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse carries a large and diverse selection of quality safety gear.

How to Care for Lawns During Dry or Drought Seasons

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/18/2016 -- When temperatures are at an all-time high, and there is little or no rain forecasted, the question of how to care for a lawn may be on the minds of many homeowners. A lawn deprived of moisture and nutrients can sustain damage and most of the time that damage can be reversed; but not always. With some effort and care, a dry brown lawn can turn lush and green when the weather begins to cooperate. Aeration and dethatching, for example, can be very beneficial for a thirsty lawn.

Dethatching will remove leftover clippings from previous lawn mowing and will allow any moisture available to penetrate the ground and thus be absorbed into the roots of the grass. Aeration can be used as a more direct method of supplying moisture to the grass roots. Manual aerating can be tiresome and overloading; using a powered aerator can save time and a backache from occurring. Aeration is the process of removing plugs, or small tubular amounts of soil, from the lawn to provide space for water, nutrients and fertilizer. Directing these essential things can help speed up the process of reviving a drought stricken lawn.

Aeration should be performed when the soil is moist enough to allow tines to penetrate easily, but not when soil is muddy and saturated, and never when the soil is dry and hard. Turf can be prepared for aeration by watering in advance.

Power Equipment Warehouse has aerating and dethatching equipment by Ryan, Bluebird and Classen available for sale online or over the phone. Bid assist pricing is available for qualifying public service and non-profit entities.

Helpful Tips for Healthy, Green Grass

Green Grass Takes Work – Find Out How

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/12/2016 -- Got good dirt? How does one know? Let's face it, people flourish in a good environment, and grass, flowers and vegetables do too. Most soil issues start with pH problems – the acidity or alkalinity of the dirt. Every state has a Cooperative Extension Agent; the Cooperative Extension Agent can be contacted to check the soil in a particular area. The percentages of sand, silt and clay are evaluated. Once determined, it may take time to get the soil issues ironed out. Remember, lime is not an instant fix! Let the experts at your local Extension office help.

Seeding and Fertilizing: Whether the task at hand is to patch some bare spots or re-plant an entire lawn, the soil must be checked. Grass seed can be applied in March, or when the soil begins to warm (depending on the climate). There are many types of grass seed to choose from such as: quick germination, sun, shade and even play areas. Crabgrass control can be used until the end of April or when the soil temperature reaches 70 to 80 degrees. Weed killers need to be applied while the weeds are in active growth, and can be applied until they stop growing in the fall. Grub controls can be applied May thru August, depending on the type of chemicals they contain. Remember, grub control should be treat from the foundation of the home outward. Grubs infest flower beds as well as lawns, and attract skunks!

Don't scalp the lawn. Never cut more than 1/3 of the lawn growth when mowing. If the lawn is high, it is advisable to cut twice. Raise the cutting height of the mower and bag the clippings, or discharge the clippings until the lawn is at a manageable length.

- Be sure the lawnmower blade is sharpened and balanced correctly

- Water new lawns thoroughly

- For established lawns that must be kept green, water once when the soil becomes dry, but before the grass color begins to change. If the ground is very hard, aerate it before watering, to aid water penetration.

- Water the lawn in early morning, evening or even night-time, to reduce water waste from evaporation.

- Watering once every seven to 10 days is typically sufficient. It is important not to apply too much water. This is wasteful, encourages shallow rooting of the grass and promotes moss and turf diseases. Excessive watering makes the lawn less drought-tolerant.

- Do not use lawn weed killers on drought-affected turf in the autumn. Delay treatments until the following spring, when the grass and weeds are growing vigorously.

The Importance of Spring Lawn Aeration

Is it really necessary to aerate a lawn? The answer is, absolutely!

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/28/2016 -- In early spring, many lawns have been matted down due to leftover fall leaves and the winter snow pack. Many homeowners may be considering lawn aeration, but it is important to know aeration has to be timed just right.

Spring aeration should be scheduled when the ground is moist enough to eliminate the possibility of damage by the coring tines. Never aerate if the ground is too muddy or the soil is too dry. Remember, to water in advance of the scheduled aeration if there hasn't been much snowfall or early spring rain.

Aeration allows air, water and nutrients to get down into the root structure of the lawn, thus enhancing growth and a strong root system. Law aeration also reduces thatch. A lush lawn and strong roots help to combat disease and tolerate severe weather fluctuations such as drought.

When purchasing a lawn aerator, be sure to select lawn aerators and dethatchers from quality manufacturers like Ryan, Bluebird and Classen. These brands are the top of the line in the industry! Local dealers like Power Equipment Warehouse, http://www.powerequipmentwarehouse.com should have them in stock.

Helpful Tips when Shopping for a Lawn Mower

Get into the “spring” of things; now is the time to shop for a new lawn mower!

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/01/2016 -- Here are a few suggestions when considering the purchase of any new lawn equipment:

1. Purchase equipment from a reputable Outdoor Power Equipment Dealer. Local Power Equipment Dealers are highly knowledgeable and can answer just about any question related to outdoor equipment.

2. Know the lay of the land. How large is the yard? Does the yard slope up or down? Are there wet areas?

3. An Outdoor Power Equipment Dealer will recommend lawn mower solutions that will suit the needs of the yard and user's comfort, whether it is a walk behind lawnmower, zero turn mower, or tractor.

4. Does the property have many trees and leaves? Can yard debris be placed in the woods, or must it be bagged and placed curbside?

5. Is it best to bag, mulch or discharge the debris? Be sure the change between bagging, mulching or discharging is easy – no tools require.

6. Is an electric start engine a must?

7. Most mowers today are self-propelled, but there are different transmissions and ways to power them. Be sure the user is comfortable with the mower handle and controls.

Remember, a lawnmower requires regular maintenance. Big box stores aren't interested in taking care of the customer after the sale, but your local Outdoor Power Equipment Dealer is. These dealers have fully stocked parts departments, mechanics and technicians that have continuing education certifications and years of experience. Undoubtedly they also support community events and local schools!

A Healthy Lawn Depends on Proper Leaf Removal

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/20/2016 -- Leaving layers of leaves on a lawn is simply a bad idea. Piles of leaves will block rain and sunlight from reaching the lawn, resulting in the grass' inability to photosynthesize. When grass cannot photosynthesize, it may develop disease or even die.

Many homeowners dislike leaf removal, especially those with large yards. The best remedy is to use a lawnmower to shred the leaves. Shredding is best when the leaves are dry. Shredding thick, wet leaves can also create a barrier that will suffocate the lawn. Acidic leaves, such as those from oak trees do not decay quickly. In this case, it is advisable to cut the leaves into smaller pieces and leave them on the lawn to deliver organic nutrients back into the soil – earthworms and microorganisms love it! As earthworms digest the nutrients, they naturally aerate the soil and allow the roots to take in soluble elements.

Lawns do not like to be smothered! Grass requires sunshine, water and air to be lush and disease resistant. Predictably, leaves fall every year, but sunshine, rain, and snow are not as predictable. It is therefore important to react appropriately to the ever-changing weather conditions.

Lastly, it is best to mulch or remove leaves before the snow arrives. Heavy snow atop piles of leaves can ruin a lawn to the point of no viable return.

Power Equipment Warehouse and other online power equipment retailers carry the equipment to mulch or remove leaves such as lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and vacuums. There is also a wide variety of walk-behind mowers, leaf blowers and tow vacuums to satisfy any property requirements.

How to Select the Right Fall Debris Equipment

The Equipment Experts at Power Equipment Warehouse Offer Useful Tips for Homeowners & Landscape Professionals Alike

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/29/2015 -- Unusual spring and summer weather patterns may deliver an early fall season to much of the country.

Heavy rains, extended drought, and extreme temperatures marked 2015. Much of the central and eastern US can expect to see changing leaves sooner than later which means falling leaves are not far behind. Homeowners and landscape professionals should evaluate their fall debris equipment to determine if the equipment is fall ready, or should be replaced with new equipment.

Handheld, backpack & walk behind leaf/debris blowers should be well stocked and readily available. Look for quality brands like Little Wonder, Husqvarna, & Troy-Bilt, just to name a few. When selecting a leaf blower, it is important to consider the velocity of the blower in cubic feet per minute (CFM). CFM is the definitive power indicator. To select the right blower velocity, consider the size of the yard and the distance the leaves/debris have to be blown. Velocity is proportional to yard size and distance, so it is beneficial to purchase more velocity if the property is sizeable. There is no need to purchase a high velocity blower for a small yard.

Trac Vac and Peco Lawn Vacs can be mounted behind tractors or zero turn mowers. These come in very handy for exceptionally large areas. Landscape professionals should consider tailgate mount, skid mount or highway ready tow behind, Little Wonder Monster truckloaders. Truckloader will gobble up leaves and make quick work of tough jobs. Don't wait. Units like these go fast and often are on long factory back order after original inventories are sold.

Capping off Winter by Preparing Snow Throwers for off-Season Storage

Great tips to prevent snow equipment degradation during warm season storage

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/06/2015 -- The last snow has melted and the air is warm and grass is sprouting. It might finally be safe to set aside snow removal tools until winter rolls in next year. It will be many months until that snow thrower is called into service again and that is precisely the problem.

At the peak of summer, when it's 80 degrees and sunny, no one wants to think about what is happening to the inside of their equipment as it sits in the back of the garage or shed under a layer of dust. As a result, some questions understandably go unasked and unanswered: Was the gas emptied? How dirty was the oil when the snow stopped falling? Are the paddles worn down?

The best time to answer those questions is now, while they are least pressing. That's why Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse offers some quick, helpful reminders of how not to neglect a snow thrower during the summer months:

1. Replace the spark plug. A fresh spark plug will reduce emissions, increase fuel efficiency and make starting easier. Heavily used plugs become worn & fouled and don't perform as well.
2. Remove & replace the oil. Old, dirty oil degrades, loses viscosity and thereby doesn't lubricate as well. This causes engine wear. Drain as much of the old oil as possible and replace with fresh. Consult the owner's manual to be sure you are using the correct oil.
3. Inspect wear parts. Some items are designed to wear over time and will require replacement when necessary. During milder winters, these items may remain viable for use if they have not seen much action, but check them anyway as they may be left over from the previous season. These items include scraper blades, paddles, skid shoes and belts, among others.
4. Lubricate bearings. Lubricate wheel, auger and impeller bearings.
5. Clean & degrease. Remove any excess grease and check the integrity of bearings.
6. Check tires and tubes. Make sure the tires have not become worn or cracked and, if tubes are used, that they will hold pressure.
7. Stabilize fresh fuel. Keep recently added fuel fresh by adding stabilizers. This will extend the life and quality of fuel so that it doesn't cause carburetors to corrode or clog, making starting easier and the need for repairs less likely.
8. Store in a cool, dry place. Cover the unit to prevent dust accumulation and place somewhere out of harm's way, preferably a dry are out of the sun.

Spring Lawn Aeration May Eliminate the Need to Dethatch

Save time and duplication of effort by aerating a lawn in the spring

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/14/2015 -- Some lawn care companies may suggest clients have an annual aeration and dethatching performed in the spring to ready lawns for the cutting season. This may very well be overkill and possibly does more harm than good. A well timed spring aeration, without dethatching, may take care of both issues.

For cool season grasses, the general agreement is that lawn aeration and dethatching should be done just before the healthiest growth period, so that grass has the best chance at recovery.

Trying to dethatch or aerate in early spring can hurt a lawn by damaging root crowns when they are young and vulnerable. Early fall is said to be the best time for cool season grasses, when temperatures are in the ideal range for growth, and the root crowns have already been well established.

There does seem to be one exception.

Most cool season grasses do not require frequent dethatching (maybe once every other year in the fall), so aeration in the spring just before the grass really takes off can have some benefit. The grass during this period will rebound well, and take optimum advantage of the aeration, rather than struggle to recover.

Moderate thatch is healthy for lawns, and if it isn't severe enough to require dedicated dethatching, aeration can help to maximize the positive aspects of thatch while also keeping it scaled back for the remainder of the season.

Aeration should be performed when the soil is moist to allow tines to penetrate easily, but not when soil is muddy and saturated. Never aerate when the soil is dry and hard. Turf can be prepared for aeration by watering in advance.

Power Equipment Warehouse has aerating and dethatching equipment by Ryan, Bluebird and Classen available for sale online or over the phone. Bid assist pricing is available for qualifying public service and non-profit entities.

Valuable Tips for Proper Gasoline Storage and Removal

The Lifespan of Power Equipment Depends on Proper Maintenance

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/09/2015 -- When a lawn mower or snow blower is stored, it is important to know what to do with the gasoline that remains in the gas tank or storage container. Depending on how old the gas is, it may not be viable when the next season rolls around.

According to the EPA website:

"Winterizing is important because gasoline left in an engine's fuel tank and carburetor can degrade over time. During storage, gasoline can interact with air and moisture to form gums and deposits. Therefore you should not store gasoline in the engine's fuel tank for any inactive periods longer than one to two months."

Because of the increasing concerns about ethanol found in gasoline, it is recommended that fuel be used or disposed of as soon as possible. Ethanol can cause general equipment damage and starting problems because it attracts water and degrading components.

When fuel is relatively new, it can likely be reused for the next season. Proper treatment and storage methods for gasoline may extend its life. Fuel additives like Ethanol Shield™ will stabilize gasoline and prevent water damage. Secondly, it is best to minimize air space in gas tanks and storage containers by filling them as full as possible with fresh gasoline; this will reduce the amount of air that reacts with fuel.

If the gas is currently usable but won't be by the next season, it is best to remove the fuel altogether and either dispose of it or use it immediately in other equipment. Upon removal following the manufacturer's recommended method, the gasoline can be taken to a certified facility to be discarded. The EPA recommends gasoline that has not been mixed with oil can be added to your vehicle's gas tank so that it is not wasted.

Degraded gasoline does not burn as efficiently and can cause wear to an engine. Gas that has been stored for several months or more has reached the end of its useful life and should be removed from the equipment. Once removed, it should be placed in approved storage containers and taken to a disposal center. Fuel should never be placed in the garbage, poured into drains, lawns or any other area where it will pose a fire hazard or contamination threat.

When stored, gasoline should be kept in containers specifically designed to stand up to fuel. The container should be kept sealed and out of sunlight. Stabilizers and ethanol treatment are recommended for storage periods longer than one month.

Gasoline containing greater than 10% ethanol should never be used in power equipment.

Life Saving Alternatives for Shoveling Snow

Do-Cuts’ Power Equipment Warehouse stresses the need for caution when shoveling snow

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/15/2015 -- For those with heart conditions or other chronic health problems, snow shoveling may be a hazardous endeavor; even life threatening. The risk factors should be assessed with wisdom and caution when considering whether to get the shovel out, or to find a less exhaustive alternative.

The Cleveland Clinic Heart & Vascular Team advises against shoveling if you are:

- Older
- Have heart disease
- Have chronic pulmonary disease or other chronic diseases

"People who have coronary artery disease should not perform strenuous shoveling of snow. It can trigger a heart attack," says A. Marc Gillinov, MD, a cardiovascular surgeon at Cleveland Clinic.

While there are of course no health care professionals on staff at Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse, they can attest to the fact that snow throwers reduce the level of exertion involved in clearing snow. Exertion levels can be further reduced with an electric start feature, since pulling the starter cord might actually be the most labor intensive aspect of using a snow thrower.

For those who live in areas with heavy snowfall, two stage snow throwers are self-propelled and can handle a great deal of snow easily and almost effortlessly. All of the two stage snow thrower models sold by Do-Cut (Honda and TORO), include an electric start and trigger style brake steering, thus facilitating minimal effort when turning.

Parts for Honda, TORO, MTD and Husqvarna snow throwers are also available at Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse.

Power Equipment Warehouse Now Offers Unique Tools and Toys as Gift Ideas

Parents and children alike will rave about these new items

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/16/2014 -- Power Equipment Warehouse is giving customers another reason to visit their Website during the holidays. Two gift ideas were recently introduced to their inventory and will surely be a hit for parents and kids alike.

New to Power Equipment Warehouse is the Wicked Tree Gear™ line of arborist hand and pole saws. All saws are rugged, foldable for safe portability, and assembled in the U.S.A. from domestic and imported components.

The saws are intended for use by homeowners and arborists alike, or outdoor enthusiasts who require a tool that is compact and lightweight enough to carry on a backpack or over the shoulder. A 12 foot pole saw reduces to a 32 inch length, with a blade safely folded and locked within a cast aluminum cage. This eliminates the risk of interference of the cutting edge.

Those searching for an affordable gift are urged to take a look at Wicked™ tools. Not only do they function as their name implies, but they also have a unique and uncompromising appearance. The Wicked Stick pole saw, for example, when extended to its usable length of 40", indisputably puts one in mind of a Samurai sword.

For kids, Power Equipment Warehouse has also expanded the Husqvarna handheld power equipment toy line-up to include not only the battery operated chainsaw toy, but a trimmer and blower as well. All of the toys produce sound effects and imitate the function of its respective real-life equivalent: the saw turns a harmless chain, the trimmer has a light-up set of strings, and the blower pushes a small amount of air from the nozzle.

Kids will be delighted with these well made outdoor power equipment toys, and they can be just like mom and dad. The toys are made to look like small scale versions of the original models they are based upon.

The power equipment toys are available for a savings as a set of three: buyers will get one of each toy with the Lawn & Garden Toy Set.

Do-Cut’s Power Equipment Warehouse urges generator owners to have maintenance items on hand before disaster strikes

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/04/2014 -- In anticipation of unpredictable, extreme weather events, Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse recommends keeping indispensable generator parts on hand to ensure power is available when needed. As travel and communication become difficult in extreme weather conditions, it becomes increasingly difficult to gather what is necessary at the time of need.

During the winter season, a Nor'easter can yield heavy snow accumulation and cause widespread blackouts and travel problems… especially for delivery services. Once delivery services are limited or eliminated, it could be weeks before crucial parts are available. In other words, it might be too late to help with the current situation.

Many people opt to wait until the time of need to order spare generator parts. Thousands of other people will be in need as well, making parts availability difficult. During Super Storm Sandy, the number of generator part orders in that small region alone, placed a huge demand upon supply for basic maintenance items like air filters, oil filters and spark plugs. Orders went unfulfilled since demand far outpaced supply.

If a weather event leaves customers without power for two weeks, a back-up generator with a constant fuel supply will potentially run for 336 continuous hours. Maintenance is critical for worry-free use.

A few inexpensive backup parts kept on hand year-round could at the very least eliminate an inconvenience; at the most it could mean the difference between life and death. Loss prevention and general safety are big concerns for businesses owners since they must remain open during natural disasters. Lights, freezers and alarm systems depend on generators. Preparedness can save business owners thousands of dollars in lost revenue alone.

In addition to replacing wear items like oil, oil filters, air filters, spark plugs and fuses, owners should test their generator on a monthly basis to ensure it is working properly when needed.

If the generator runs on gasoline, the fuel should be kept fresh and/or treated with fuel stabilizer to preserve the fuel's volatility and protect against the negative effects of ethanol. Old, deteriorated fuel is one of the leading causes of tough starts.

Hands-on Fall Lawn Care Creates Advantages in the Spring

Learn the critical lawn care steps to take now to ensure a thriving lawn in the Spring

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/14/2014 -- Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse recommends proactive lawn care habits as the mowing season winds down.

To some, fall lawn care means raking leaves and that's about all; but the reality is that there are plenty of great opportunities to optimize conditions for grass so that it not only survives the winter but also thrives in the spring.

Experts urge homeowners and caretakers to keep mowing normally until the last few cuts at the end of fall, at which time the cutting height should be lowered as far as possible without taking away more than a third of the length of the grass blades. This will expose the crown of the plant to sun light in both the fall and the spring, and there will be less grass to turn brown in the winter.

Fall is an ideal time to aerate. Letting the proper nutrients and air into the ground which supports turf will assist in fortifying grass as it gathers and stores sustenance for the harsh winter months. Late September/early October is the best time to aerate.

If fertilizing will only be done once a year, autumn is the best time to do it. As grass blades grow slower late in the year, the roots and rhizomes (horizontal stems that produce grass blades) continue to grow at a high rate. The grass is getting itself ready for winter. Fall fertilization promotes the growth of hardy, deep roots so that grass plants can take best advantage during the next growing season. Mid to late fall after aeration is the optimum time period for fertilization.

Bald spots are best addressed in early to mid-September, giving the grass seed ample time to germinate before the coolest part of autumn. Lawn repair mixtures are available and contain everything needed (including fertilizer and mulch) to fix dead areas of turf. Watering every other day is recommended unless rainfall is otherwise sufficient.

Keeping up with the leaves as they fall is also a good idea. Moisture from rain and dew can cause harmful matting that will kill areas of grass by blocking out vital sunlight and carbon dioxide. Furthermore, matted leaves promote fungal growth. Leaves do not have to be raked; bagging them while mowing the grass will reduce accumulation over time. It's best to remove as many leaves as possible before the first snow fall.

Relevant equipment like aerators and spreaders can be purchased by homeowners and commercial lawn care contractors by contacting a power equipment dealer or rental house. Brands such as Ryan, Bluebird, Prizelawn and others are available from Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse.

Wheeled Leaf Blower Is the Solution for Landcape Projects This Fall

When it comes to moving leaves, handheld and backpack leaf blowers simply can’t compete with wheeled blowers.

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/16/2014 -- Backpack blowers can be found on the trailers of nearly every landscape contractor looking to make money this fall, and for good reason. Backpack leaf blower's increased power and portability over handheld blowers is indispensable, especially when cleaning driveways and sidewalks after mowing, or when clearing beds and other tight spaces during fall clean-ups. However, when it comes to moving leaves, both handhelds and backpack blowers simply can't compete with wheeled leaf blowers.

Quality wheeled blowers such as Little Wonder, can move leaves in a fraction of the time it takes a backpack or handheld blower to move the same volume over the same distance. One internet video features a walk behind blower displacing leaves in a 40 square foot area at nearly 5 times the rate demonstrated by the largest of backpack blowers.

The reason is air volume.

Certainly, backpack and handheld blowers can produce a high velocity air stream. In fact, the MPH rating for most wheeled blowers is in the same range as smaller units (around 150-200 MPH), with the difference being that walk behind blowers are capable of producing a higher volume of air moved at the same speed. The amount of air a blower can move over a given time period is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). With wheeled blowers, this rating typically falls in the 1400-2000 CFM range; backpacks top out at around 900 CFM. This is roughly a 50% increase in volume at the entry level price of a walk behind blower.

Walk behind blowers also produce a wind stream that is in line with the ground and close to the base of the leaf pile (as opposed to the high angles produced by backpack blowers held far from the ground in the hands of workers), making efficient use of the high air volume by reducing the deflection of air off the ground. Some manufacturers, like Little Wonder, offer a feature that splits the air stream into two levels, one to blow the leaves in a straight line and another higher stream which tames the leaves lifted into the air so they stay with the pile.

When choosing blowers, buyers should be aware that not all manufacturers will list CFM ratings for wheeled units, since there is no ANSI standard for them as with handhelds and backpacks, and therefore no requirement to do so.

Rhino GPD-40 Gas-Powered Post Driver Becomes a Valuable Asset in the Power Equipment Warehouse Lineup

The Portable, Gas-Powered Post Driver Reduces Man Hours and Project Cost

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/19/2014 -- One need only watch the internet videos to understand how the Rhino® GPD-40™ sells itself. The simple, compact tool designed to drive stakes and fence posts up to 2 ½" has proven a versatile cost-saver to professional installers who require a tool both powerful and portable.

Since adding it to their list of available merchandise, sales of the GPD-40 has been strong at Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse and via professionals in the field.

According to Rhino's website
"The GPD-40 Fence Pro™ is the perfect tool for post driving tasks across several industries such as erosion control, agricultural, livestock, professional fence contractors, sign installation, rental tent installation and many more."

What this tool has to offer is convenience, efficiency and ease of use. The 4 cycle Honda engine runs on straight gasoline, so fuel is readily available at any gas station and eliminates the need for air compressors or electrical outlets for power. The compact design allows for easy, single-person transport into fields, woods and parking lots, or where a power supply is otherwise unattainable.

The GPD-40 seems to work as well as its air-powered counterparts, except workers using this product have less set-up time and don't have to pound with a hammer or manual post driver. This means a reduction in man hours and the over-all time required to complete a job.

Plus, there's nothing else out there quite like it.

Those who would benefit from the GPD-40 include; fairgrounds, municipalities, colleges, party planners, parks, road crews and anyone else looking to make less work of driving stakes and posts.

Retailers and distributors are finding it hard to keep these models in stock (as production is barely keeping up with demand), so those in need of this product are advised to order or reserve a GPD-40 now to have it as soon as possible.

Safety Still Imperative when Mowing the Lawn at Home

Important Safety Tips for Every Lawn Mower Owner

Warren, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/29/2014 -- Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse

The experts at Do-Cut's Power Equipment Warehouse understand the dangers that come with operating any piece of outdoor power equipment. The experts share essential tips for ensuring a safe mowing season.

Mowing the grass is a task performed so often and by so many people that it's almost taken for granted that injury and property damage won't occur. Taking a few precautions, and remaining aware that accidents can happen while performing the most routine jobs, in the most peaceful of settings. It may also mean the difference between spending an afternoon sipping something cold, and a trip to the emergency room.

Mower Maintenance

Performing routine maintenance on a mower will not only increase its longevity and make a yard look better, but also reduce the risk of injury and property damage. It's best to keep mower components clear of debris and grass clippings, especially but not limited to the area around the muffler. This will lower fire risk and allow the mower to operate effectively and with less wear. Other considerations include tightening down loose parts and checking the starter cord for wear and fray. Always disconnect the spark plug when servicing a lawn mower.

Walk the Yard

Rocks, twigs, golf balls and toys all have the potential to become dangerous projectiles when a mower blade hits them at speeds up to 200 mph. To avoid eye and head injuries and broken windows, it's worth taking a few minutes to check the lawn for hidden items left by the children or last night's storm. Insect nests can appear over short periods of time, and are often hidden in the ground until disturbed by the noise and vibration of power equipment.

Know Where the Kids Are

Of course, it's not always easy to keep children exactly where they should be, but staying alert and knowing where they are while using power equipment could keep them out of harm's way. When the front lawn is being mowed, it might be best for the children to play in the backyard, and vice versa. Children should be taught to have an active respect for power equipment tools and understand that they are not toys.

Choose the Right Apparel

A Kevlar suit won't be necessary, but there are some do's and don'ts when it comes to donning work wear in the yard. Long pants will help protect legs from burns, cuts, insect bites and other hazards. Wraparound safety glasses or sunglasses are also a good idea. Sun and heat should be considered when dressing for yard work, and appropriate measures should be taken to avoid negative effects, especially for those who are sensitive to those conditions. Open toe shoes or sandals should NEVER be worn while mowing the grass.

Common Sense

Possibly the best safety device is good judgment. Keep hands and fingers on the handle and avoid moving parts and hot surfaces. Shut the mower off when not in use, and remove the spark plug when doing any impromptu maintenance. A mower should not be altered from its factory state in any way, no matter how much it may "enhance" performance.
