Set a new milestone in genetic engineering

London, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/07/2014 -- British Scientists Clone Dinosaur in what is seen as a major achievement in the field of genetic engineering.

According to a spokesman for the John Moore University, Liverpool, scientists at the university have managed to clone a dinosaur. The baby that is being incubated at University's College of Veterinary Medicine has been named Apatosaurus.

To make the clone, the DNA from Apatosaurus fossils was extracted and then harvested before being injected into a fertile Ostrich womb. The result is the dinosaur baby that has been nicknamed Spot.

Dr. Gerrard Jones, a biology professor at LJMU who is also the lead scientist of the project explained the move saying, "Ostriches share a lot of genetic traits with dinosaurs. Their eggshell microstructures are almost identical to those of the Apatosaurus. That's why the cloning worked so perfectly."

The development has shocked a few, surprised many but overall has been well received amongst the scientific community. Dr. Gemma Sheridan, a LJMU chemistry professor went as far as saying that such things would only happen in movies. "But we're making it happen right here in our lab. It's astounding," she added.

However not everyone is happy with the news that British Scientists Clone Dinosaur. There are several animal rights activists and religious groups have made their displeasure known about the latest development. According to them, animal cloning is unethical and immoral.

PETA President Craig Farmer was at the forefront of the voices against the move by the scientists that they believe could be life threatening to new species. He made his displeasure quite clear when he said, "These scientists brought an animal from the Jurassic age back to life – just to watch it suffer!"

But scientists at the heart of the project seem to be less perturbed by the voices raised by the activists. They believe the opportunities presented by dinosaur cloning are endless and could be vital to the future in many ways, especially in the field of genetic engineering. As Dr. Sheridan says, "Within ten years, we could repopulate the world with dinosaurs."

As things stand now, Spot is stable and in no spot of bother. More tests will be run on him by the scientists and his condition will be closely monitored.
