High Pressure and Thinner Margins Lead Manufacturers to Poor Communication

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/26/2015 -- Like it or not, the global economy brought higher pressure and thinner margins right to your doorstep. Nobody feels this as keenly as the production managers and shop foreman in the small manufacturing operation. These key individuals must constantly pace the shop floor to eyeball the process and look for problems, shepherding workflow and throughput through a mix of first-person viewpoint, second-hand information, and a variety of tracking systems. These methods can include disconnected spreadsheets, phone calls, emails, face-to-face conversations, and the good old scheduling whiteboard, which is frantically updated as demands and challenges change. In the midst of all this chaos manufacturing leaders are failing to communicate with shop floor employees.

PDP Solutions is quickly becoming the preferred third party vendor for manufacturers outsourcing the employee communications function.

PDP Solutions Radio Program Includes Interview with Manufacturing Journalist Thomas R. Cutler

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/22/2015 -- Manufacturing journalist, Thomas R. Cutler was interviewed by radio host, Todd Schnick of IntrepidNOW and sponsored by PDP Solutions. The interview series is called, "Effective Communication in the Workplace." The fifth part of a six part series examines the recent survey results about manufacturing leadership. Cutler explained, "We wanted to figure out the real manufacturers' pain points. We learned how manufacturing leaders communicate with shop floor workers." Cutler's firm surveyed 1500 small- to mid-sized manufacturing CEOs and asked them about the greatest barriers, challenges, and fears. Statistically significant findings were both interesting and unexpected.

The podcast examined in much greater depth what is being done by manufacturing executives who recognize their communication limits. Increasingly the service of internal communication is being structured and managed by companies like People Driven Performance. Manufacturing CEOs are working to ensure on-time delivery, inventory management, and sadly communication rapport with shop floor workers often suffers. Cutler also explained that the age gap between most manufacturing CEOs and their Millennial workers exacerbates communication issues. Without regular communication processes employee retention will suffer as boomers are aging out of the workforce.

Manufacturing Growth in India Lures US Engineers Driving Importance of Effective Communication

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/21/2015 -- Apeksha Kaushik, for the Economic Times report that with an added push from the 'Made in India' campaign, the manufacturing and its sub sectors will need approximately 97 million skilled workers by 2022. Among these, software engineers will be most sought-after. There will be plenty of jobs for the skilled candidates. The manufacturing & engineering industry employs approximately four million skilled and semi-skilled workers and accounts for 27 percent of the total factories. These are important data and many US workers will be enticed to move to India for far better wages. US manufacturers will need to do a better job of communication to keep the best and brightest on board.

Third party vendors like PDP Solutions are being hired by US manufacturing leaders who need to stay focused on the production challenges while recognizing the value and importance of being in front of shop floor plant workers.

Manufacturing Role Discussed by Economic Policy Institute Yet Leadership Communication Ignored

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/20/2015 -- Manufacturing is a critically important part of the US economy. Despite fluctuations over the years the value of the sector cannot be ignored. Sadly manufacturing executives are admittedly poor communicators and hurt the sector's growth, employee engagement, and employee retention.

Workers in manufacturing made 10.9%, or $1.78, more than similar workers elsewhere in the economy in, according to a new report issued by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI). The wage premium amounts to more than $3,700 annually. The sector employed 12 million workers in 2013, or about 8.8% of total U.S. employment, including a higher overall share of workers without a college degree. In addition to the 12 million people employed in U.S manufacturing, the sector supports some 17.1 million indirect jobs, for a total of 29.1 million jobs directly and indirectly supported – more than one fifth (21.3%) of total U.S. employment. "This report makes clear just how crucial the manufacturing sector is to the nation's economy," said Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM). Manufacturing industries generated $2.1 trillion in GDP (12.5% of total U.S. gross domestic product). U.S. manufacturing had gross output of $5.9 trillion, more than one-third (35.4%) of U.S. GDP. The report found that manufacturing plays a particularly important role in supporting jobs in a group of states in the upper Midwest and South. The top five states ranked by manufacturing's share of total state employment in 2013 were Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, and Alabama. Complete data for employment in each state are available in the EPI Manufacturing Employment Map.

PDP Solutions is taking the lead as the third party communicator for manufacturing organization

Third Party Logistics and Third Party Communications as Manufacturers Outsource

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/18/2015 -- In business, 3PL has a broad meaning that can be applied to any service contract that involves storing or shipping things. A 3PL service may be a single service such as transportation or warehouse storage or it can be a system-wide bundle of services capable of managing the entire supply chain. The term 3PL was originally coined to differentiate logistic providers who used the Internet to enhance their services from those that did not. Ultimately with same day and next day delivery expected by the consumer manufacturers have no option but to use 3PL to meet these new high demands. The same is true with the internal communication paradigm.

These logistics applications are crossing over to employee communication as manufacturing executives recognize that growing organizations require outside help. PDP Solutions is quickly becoming the vendor of choice for growing manufacturers to ensure ongoing and consistent employee communication.

ESOPs Better Communicators Than Other Manufacturing Firms

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/15/2015 -- A company interested in establishing an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) has a wide range of options in tailoring a plan that is best suited to its particular needs and goals. A large, publicly traded company, for example, would handle the creation of its ESOP somewhat differently than would a smaller firm. In general ESOPs are better communication companies because of the focus of ownership culture.

Topics included at The ESOP Association Conference:

- Initial ESOP Communications
- Communications in a Mature ESOP Company
- ESOP Communication Committee Workshop
- Learning to Lead when Employees are Owners
- Every Superhero Needs a Cape: How to arm every employee with the tools to make your ESOP culture great.
- Open-Book Management: Winning the Great Game of Business:
- The ESOP Education Bucket List – Recruitment through Retirement
- AACE (Annual Award for Communication Excellence) – Measuring the Strength of Your ESOP Communication Programs
- Engagement – What Really Makes Someone Act Like an Owner?
- Communicating Ownership to Different Generations
- Breaking Down Barriers – Engaging All Employees
- Building an Ownership Culture: Developing Leaders at All Levels in Your Company
- The ABCs of ESOPs
- Learning the "Rules of the Game"

In general ESOP manufacturers are doing a better job communicating with employees. Those that are considering an ESOP are looking to companies like PDP Solutions who act as a third-party vendor to communicate with the plant floor employees, keeping them fully engaged.

Onboarding Workforce Only Possible with Dynamic Communication from Manufacturing Executives

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/13/2015 -- In the 1990s and 2000s, the manufacturing industry saw middle management hollowed out and was introduced to part-time/contract labor forces, and the replacement of routine work by robots, software and outsourcing. Factories were left with a smaller set of "knowledge workers" — the ones who could think for themselves as well as use their intuition and personal skills. Since then, those skilled workers that remained "aged out" and retired. Onboarding new replacement manufacturing labor teams requires a different set of requirements, especially as those under 30 are used to constant feedback and recognition for work performed.

The average manufacturing C-level executive is the age of the new workers' parents. There is a great admission that communicating with younger workers is a challenge and unfamiliar. This is giving way for companies like PDP Solutions hired as a third-party vendor to handle the internal employee communication for manufacturers.

Reshoring American Manufacturing Does Not Solve Poor Manufacturing Executive Communication Skills

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/12/2015 -- Reshoring is great. It means more jobs back in the United States. It does not, however, solve the problem of poor communication on the part of manufacturing executives.

The Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) recently suggested that, "Now's the time for Americans to rally around the core of our economy: manufacturing. We're pleased to have the support of prominent voices in our community as we continue to champion what sets our country apart and will be the key to remaining strong in an increasingly competitive global marketplace, as the need for skilled labor swells to unprecedented levels," said Barbara Morrison, AME president. Harry Moser, founder of the Reshoring Initiative, has long been an advocate for AME's work in supporting North American manufacturers. Moser began the Reshoring Initiative in 2010 to bring secure, well-paying manufacturing jobs back to the United States. Ultimately to keep American plant floor workers happy manufacturing leaders are going to have to become more effective communicators or outsource the communication requirements to third party companies they way payroll and other services are addressed.
Increasingly manufacturers have started to outsource communication with plant floor workers to ensure they have the business, the payroll, and the growth domestically. PDP Solutions is a preferred third party vendor for this service.
Companies with a core group of employees who know how to use their innate strengths in this way show measurable improvements in not just earnings, but also profits. In a study recently conducted among small and midsized manufacturers, 90% of these companies increased profitability and 85% of them increased the growth rate by utilizing outsourced services such as communication leveraging. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) tell manufacturing leaders if an employee has the capability to be one of these top performers. Developing a KPI that accounts for the degree to which each member is working in their areas of strength will help develop a high-performing project team.
Chief Executive Magazine Looks at Manufacturing Executives Communication Style

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/07/2015 -- Manufacturers are not doing a good job of communicating with their employees and distributors, reported Chief Executive magazine. Many are finding third party communication experts, such as PDP Solutions, to be an efficient solution. Increasingly, manufacturers focus with operational imperatives, are leaving the strategic communication leadership to experience vendors who can continue to articulate the culture of the organization. Nowhere is this imperative more urgent than in ESOP organizations.

Manufacturing executives feel they are not doing a good job of communicating with their employees, according to a recent study by TR Cutler, Inc., a manufacturing communications firm whose research specifically focused on communication pain points in manufacturing. Over 1,500 small and mid-sized manufacturers were interviewed.

"In my day (a 200 person Indiana manufacturing CEO, 58 years of age) you went to work, did a great day's work, got paid, and went home. Now younger workers want constant approval and recognition and it's so out of my comfort zone. Just don't know what to say to them," one respondent said.

A significant part of the challenge is having a multi-ethnic employee base, while more than 60 percent of those with a STEM background felt there was a weakness in their leadership style.

Culture of Kaizen Challenging for Small and Midsized Manufacturers Reports PDP Solutions

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/06/2015 -- The culture of kaizen is irrelevant if manufacturing executives do not communicate it with the plant floor workers.

Gemba Academy recently announced a new course entitled "Culture of Kaizen," an 11-part series that emphasizes the importance of people in continuous improvement methodology. While equally informative and inspirational, this new course is radically different from traditional material and is the first of its kind in the lean training industry. Instead of focusing on the use of various Lean and Six Sigma tools, "Culture of Kaizen" teaches subscribers how to set the stage for success by instilling an improvement-oriented mindset that applies to lower level employees and managers alike.

"The two pillars of lean are respect for people and continuous improvement. In my opinion respect for people is the most critical and powerful pillar, yet it is often forgotten or misunderstood, thereby leading to lean transformation failure. With this course Gemba Academy is once again setting itself apart by providing training not just on tools, but on the culture and framework necessary for lean success," explains co-founder Kevin Meyer. Small and mid-sized manufacturers were recently interviewed and admitted that the crisis management approach to production is not helping to create the culture they want and are eager to look at alternatives.

PDP Solutions Proud That Minnesota Helps Women in STEM Careers

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/05/2015 -- Call it the "steel ceiling" – and the next challenge for women's employment opportunities in the 21st Century. A U.S. Department of Commerce study shows only one in seven engineers are women, and women account for as little as 27 percent of all computer science workers. While advances for women have been made in fields such as healthcare and law, sexism or at best gender preference, still exists in technical fields.

A Minnesota Breakthrough has happened since one of the longest-running technical colleges in the country, Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis, MN, has put in place a series of initiatives to encourage interest in technical subjects for women of all ages and backgrounds, such as helping younger age girls understand STEM career possibilities and establishing a program designed specifically to help women from disadvantaged backgrounds enter a STEM profession. A grant from Kellogg Foundation has enabled the hiring of a Coordinator of Women's Enrollment to focus specifically on STEM opportunities for women and an emphasis on role model hiring for departmental deans: recruiting women experienced in technical fields into departmental leadership positions, including Bridget Reynolds, Academic Dean of Construction Sciences & Building Technology. Other initiatives include involvement in regional and national robotics and other technical contests and competitions for pre-college aged students.

PDP Solutions' President Louise Dickmeyer, is proud that Minnesota is creating breakthroughs for the next generation of women in manufacturing. The company supports manufacturers who outsource communication so they can stay focused on attracting the best employees.

PDP Solutions Creates Outsourced Service to Manufacturers Providing Human Side of VSM

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/04/2015 -- Karen Martin recently discuss the human side of value stream mapping (VSM) as helping businesses—and the people within them—be their best. In Quality Digest, Martin asked when one thinks of value stream transformation, what are the most common desired outcomes that come to mind? Shorter lead times? Higher quality? Reduced expenses? Expansive thinkers often go beyond these classic performance indicators and aim for improvements such as quicker time to market for new products, greater market share, smoother acquisitions, and less painful annual budgeting cycles.

These are all noble pursuits that can be accomplished more easily through the proven practice of value stream mapping. However the deepest transformational benefits from well-executed value stream mapping activities are often people-based. Improvement and organizational transformation are deeply psychological. Looking exclusively for tangible results ignores the reality that people are psychological beings. Being aware of and playing into human psychology can be tremendously healing—for both the individuals involved and the organization at large. One of the key conditions, leadership alignment, value stream mapping helps create proving effective in achieving quantifiable performance improvement are also humanistic at their core.

Manufacturing leaders, admitting to weak communication skillsets are turning to companies like PDP Solutions to outsource communication dynamics in order to provide the human side of value stream mapping.

PDP Solutions President Discusses Manufacturing Leadership Communication Shortcomings and Solutions

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/01/2015 -- President of PDP Solutions, Louise Dickmeyer was recently interviewed by Todd Schnick of IntrepidNOW regarding manufacturing leadership communication. The interview series "Effective Communication in the Workplace," explores the importance of effective communication at the workplace.

Dickmeyer explained, "There are so many factors in the marketplace converging to create a perfect storm in the workplace. We have employee engagement at an all-time low, the economy is heating up, there is greater pressure to retain skilled workers, and the war on talent is getting fiercer all the time. The average age of manufacturer skilled workers is 56. We are on a brink of the largest shift in human capital in history: 10,000 Baby Boomers are retiring each day and a new generation millennials coming in so an employer's ability to engage and effectively communicate is becoming an absolute imperative."

Manufacturing Labor Gap Continues According to PricewaterhouseCoppers

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/30/2015 -- PwC's report recently published includes a special section on human capital, which reveals a continued shortage of skilled workers across the manufacturing sector as 64% of respondents cited a need to fill certain skill gaps in their business in the next 12-24 months. Further highlighting the issue, over the past year, two-thirds of manufacturers also reported having open positions that they were unable to fill with experienced or skilled employees. In order to begin filling the gap, 78% of manufacturers plan to hire new skill function employees over the next 12-24 months. Ironically if these new hires do not feel engaged they will not stay on the job, which is why more manufacturing executives are turning to third party vendors to assist in the communication process with plant floor workers.

Until manufacturing executive ensure the new workers are part of the team through consistent communication messaging, even new hires will not remain on the job.

Manufacturers Outsource Communication Rather Than Confront Top 10 Communication Hurdles

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2015 -- Career Track researchers asked women across the country to describe their toughest communication situations. Having analyzed over 800 circumstances and compiled these top 10: confronting others, delivering criticism, controlling emotions, being more assertive, receiving constructive criticism, using confidence not uncertainty, getting cooperation, dealing with the anger of others, setting limits, improving presentation skills, and taking charge. Similar research found that many manufacturing leaders would rather outsource communication to third party vendors than acquire these skillsets.

Male or female, manufacturing executives faced with urgent plant floor decision-making, order and inventory status crisis management, and other issues are increasingly turning to organizations like PDP Solutions. These manufacturers recognize the weakness in their communication dynamic and find it easier and cost-effective to outsource the plant floor worker communication. Manufacturers outsource kaizen, lean, and other services from regulatory compliance, third-party suppliers, and more. This service is just another way to ensure the focus is on making great product while keeping workers fully engaged.

Manufacturing Leaders Admit to Lacking Motivational Communication Skills

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/27/2015 -- In the personality profile of most manufacturing leaders the word motivational is missing, yet it is completely required, even if tasked with a third party organization to share with shop floor workers.

A motivational conversation does not require that manufacturing executives be motivational speakers nor display the hyper energy of a 'go-getter'. The motivational conversation is meant to help the plant floor workers. The motivational conversation is a calm, caring, and focused approach that can be used to counsel, coach, support, and / or empower others. In a recent survey most manufacturing leaders acknowledge they lack the ability to have a motivational conversation with an employee facing a personal or professional challenge; overwhelmingly they acknowledge it would give them an added dimension worker effectiveness and leadership abilities. It will help the workforce feel supported without feeling intruded upon. It is an interpersonal skill that will never become redundant.

Production Assembly Lean Manufacturing Impacting Merger and Acquisition Activity

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/24/2015 -- Craig Barner recently reported in Forbes that merger & acquisition activity could get brawnier as smarter approaches to manufacturing make product assembly leaner and more responsive to demand. Production concepts, such as lean manufacturing, six sigma and total quality management, have been around for decades, but now new ideas, such as distributed manufacturing, are being tried. Whatever the approach, these models seek to improve the way products, from furniture to automobiles, are made. In addition, powerful new tools—robots, laser cutters, printed electronics, computer-numerical-control (CNC) milling machines, three-dimensional printing and scanning systems—are increasingly being employed in manufacturing.

These trends point to the need for more funding so that technology providers and manufacturers can upgrade their systems, products and offerings to stay competitive. Increased M&A activity in these areas is already happening, and some observers think deal flow—at least in some areas—will get bigger. Lux Research, a Boston-based analysis firm, recently issued a report on distributed manufacturing. Lux has done a lot of work with chemical and construction companies and advised such organizations as General Electric, Saudi Aramco, and Germany's Siemens, said Mark Buenger, Lux's research director.

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/23/2015 -- By 2025, millennials will make up 75% of the U.S. and Canadian workforces, meaning that pinpointing what drives millennial engagement, and also understanding how companies can help different generations work cohesively as a unit, is essential to running a successful workplace. Dale Carnegie Training recently conducted a study focusing on how to engage millennials at work, and found that 86% of millennials are significantly more likely to be engaged at work compared to baby boomers. The study also found that this generation of workers places a significant value on a number of attributes that they find are missing from their workplace including: doing work that is varied and interesting, open and honest communication with senior management, and the ability to learn and develop beyond their current job. Understanding these values, as well as the differences and similarities between millennials and baby boomers, is crucial for manufacturing executives to understand so they can successfully motivate all of their employees.

Increasingly manufacturers are hiring firms like PDP Solutions, outsourcing communication with plant floor employees to ensure they are appreciative of a positive workplace, engaged at their place of employment, and plan to continue working for the company for some time to come. Manufacturing leaders admit they are weak at this communication and need to find service providers who can assist.

Radio Interview Series Sponsored by PDP Solutions Talks Manufacturing Leadership

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/23/2015 -- Manufacturing journalist, Thomas R.

Manufacturing Executives Try a Smile to Retain Good Employees

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/22/2015 -- Good employees are hard to find, so bosses across the country today will be showing their employees just how much they value them with company parties, free lunch, acts of kindness, gifts, a team spirit day, even massages and a half-day with pay. But appreciation goes beyond just one day of recognition. Companies that provide health insurance, dental and vision, retirement plans, paid vacations, and sick leave, often gain and retain happy employees over those that do not. Benefits are a critical piece of an employee compensation package with health benefits and time-off as the most popular, according to a study by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services. The study also found that employee benefits have a significant impact on staff retention and most employees were happy with their employer's offerings.

Beyond offering these benefits the leadership team must communicate that such benefits are an added value to working with the company. Benefits that are not shared, touted, and communication lose so much of their value and retention capacity.

Louise Dickmeyer Helps Manufacturing Leaders Onboard Employees with Better Communication Techniques

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/20/2015 -- From the first day every new employee who joins a manufacturing company is an opportunity to the C-level executives to build rapport, connection, and communication. From the first day new manufacturing employees start on the job, they begin to make judgments about the company, their manager, their peers, and the job they have been hired to do. Too many first days are wasted days with new employees sitting around doing nothing while they wait for their managers to pay attention to them. According to Louise Dickmeyer, President of PDP Solutions, there are effective ways to on-board a plant floor worker without them feeling overwhelmed and it starts with leadership communication. Often they are funneled into half-hearted orientation programs and bombarded with information overload. PDP Solutions revamps the communication strategy of manufacturing leaders from day 1 of a new worker joining the firm.

Shop Floor Workers Performance Directly Impacted by Manufacturing Leaders Communication

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/17/2015 -- PDP Solutions' president, Louise Dickmeyer discussed why manufacturers need to outsource communication in the company's recent blog. Dr. Marvin Marshall shared in Reliable Plant magazine that without trust in the workplace, communication and teamwork will erode. Additionally, morale decreases while turnover rises. He suggests three approaches to build shop floor employees' trust in management, thereby making the workplace an environment filled with innovation, creativity, and ultimately higher profits for all.

In the largest quantitative research project of its kind, more than 1500 small and midsized manufacturing CEOs were interviewed (in February 2015) about their greatest barriers, challenges, and fears about growing their companies. The survey, conducted by TR Cutler, Inc., based in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, is the organization which founded the five thousand-member Manufacturing Media Consortium.

The greatest pain point causing anxiety, fear, and apprehension about manufacturing growth among these manufacturing leaders was speaking to their employees. More than four out of five (82%) said that speaking to their employees was difficult or very difficult.

A manufacturing leader can take the information learned during listening and then utilize outsourced communication programs by PDP Solutions to acknowledge employees' feelings and opinions. Inquiry precedes advocacy. Effective manufacturing managers know that delegation of tasks is essential for building trust in the workplace. Marshall is adamant that babying employees hinders professional development.

The ability to constantly praise and recognize employee growth and achievement is at the heart of People Driven Performance.

Manufacturing Growth in South Requires Executives Outsource Employee Communication

Mankato, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/16/2015 -- While manufacturing continues to be a high-growth economic opportunity in the region of Georgia and Tennessee, manufacturing employment grew 3 percent last year ending in October, nearly twice the national average of 1.6 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The labor force in the North is not keeping up the pace which is why PDP Solutions is working to help manufacturing executives attract and keep capable young talent.

Sadly manufacturing CEOs in the South have expressed real concern about their limited abilities to communicate with a fast-growing workforce. Factory employment was above average in Alabama (2.9 percent), South Carolina (2.4 percent) and Mississippi (2 percent). According to Birmingham's Brasfield & Gorrie, one of the largest privately-held construction firms in the U.S., has been on the forefront, and benefited from, the migration of the manufacturing industry from traditional strongholds in the Northeast to the Southern states like Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida. Major manufacturers like Nissan, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin continue to move new construction and operations to right-to-work states where unionization is less likely.
