Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada Discusses Diesel v Petrol: Which Is the Best?

Which is best, petrol or diesel? Stephen Ottley puts both through their paces.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/13/2014 -- If there is a poster child for a successful image makeover in the auto industry, then diesel fuel is it. In short order it has gone from dirty, smelly truck fuel to powering the winners of the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours race for the past five years.

On the road, diesel sales are rising and show no signs of slowing down. In Europe they have overtaken petrol models for some manufacturers and they could do the same here.

Since 2005, overall sales of diesel-powered vehicles and diesel performance parts have almost doubled in Australia. The growth is even more dramatic if you look at passenger car sales. Last year, brands sold five times as many diesel-powered passenger cars as they did in 2005, although they account for fewer than 7 per cent of the total. Buyers have been lured by cleaner, more fuel-efficient diesel engines. Many are now as smooth and quiet as a petrol engine.

They are now found in every sort of vehicle, too, from compact city cars all the way up to luxury limos such as the Jaguar XJ. They've also become sporty. Audi and Peugeot, which have used diesel-powered prototypes to win Le Mans, even offer their TT and RCZ sports cars with diesel engines.

The reason for the surge in diesel popularity is simple: better fuel economy at minimal expense. Typically, a diesel is 20 to 30 per cent more efficient than an equivalent petrol engine.

Diesel engines, almost all of which are turbocharged in modern cars, also offer more torque (pulling power).

But there are some trade-offs. Diesel engines emit more noxious gases and CO2 per litre of fuel used than petrol-powered cars. However, because diesels use less fuel, they can emit less CO2 over time.

Cost is another big factor in the diesel versus petrol debate. Diesel models usually command about a $2000 premium over their petrol equivalent.

And since the diesel versus petrol choice is often driven by the hip pocket, fuel prices are a factor. Diesel has traditionally tended to be the more expensive but the balance is tipping, especially so with many European petrol models demanding more expensive premium unleaded.

To choose the best option, diesel or petrol, we put three of the best-selling cars in the country — the Volkswagen Golf, Mazda6 and Subaru Forester — to the test; pitting diesel against petrol.

Truck customers, from half-ton to commercial, have a demanding range of needs and require their vehicles to provide high levels of capability. Ram trucks are designed to deliver a total package.

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada Tells About Diesel Engines 101 New Technology, Big Torque, and Better Mileage

As gasoline prices continue climb and recreational toys grow in size, truck buyers are increasingly drawn to the powerful, long-lasting, and relatively efficient diesel engines offered in heavy-duty, full-size pickups. Currently, only pickups with a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,500 pounds or higher offer both diesel and gas engines. These heavy-duty trucks are commonly referred to as 3/4- or one-ton pickups. Light-duty, or 1/2-ton, pickups have GVWRs from 6,100 to 8,200 pounds and all are powered by gasoline engines. Jeep offers the lone exception to this full-size pickup diesel dominance with the '05 Liberty SUV, available for the first time with a trail-ready 2.8-liter/160-horse I-4 with 295 lb-ft of torque and EPA mileage rated at 22 city/27 highway.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/13/2014 -- As testament to the diesel engine's popularity, Ford Performance Parts reports its 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel was installed in 63 percent of F-250/F-350 Super Duty pickups sold through the first nine months of 2004. GM's 6.6-liter Duramax diesel made up 44 percent of GMC Performance Parts Sierra HD 2500/3500 sales in the same time period (up significantly from just 12 percent in 2000) and 41 percent of the Chevy Silverado HD 2500/3500 sales (up from 33 percent in 2002). It appears that the most devoted diesel fans drive the Dodge Performance Parts Ram 2500/3500, where the 5.9-liter Cummins engine was sold in 80 percent of the heavy-duty lineup through September 2004 (up from 69 percent in 2002.) Diesels don't have the same attraction in the U.S. passenger-car market, where they're just starting to gain showroom momentum following a high-profile but failed effort in the '80s. The 1973 and 1979 gas shortages prompted automakers to offer diesel engines, with their attractive fuel economy numbers, as a way to combat high gas prices. But diesels quickly developed a reputation for being noisy, dirty, smelly, difficult to start in cold weather, and sluggish to drive.

Haunted by the motors' unrefined past, American mainstream drivers have shunned diesels. Meanwhile, technology has improved in Europe, where some countries boast that diesel-powered cars make up more than 50 percent of 2004 new-vehicle sales. Currently only Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen offer diesel-powered cars in the U.S., and those models accounted for fewer than 30,000 total sales through the first eight months of 2004, according to J.D. Power & Associates. Meanwhile, Detroit sold nearly a quarter-million diesel pickup units in the same time period and should clear 400,000 units by year's end. The diesel engine's traditional advantage has been fuel economy. Since EPA estimates are not required on heavy-duty trucks, however, it is difficult to compare actual mileage between gasoline and diesel models over a certain time span. On average, a diesel engine offers 30 percent better mileage than its gasoline counterpart, but that figure can rise to as high as 50 percent under certain conditions such as constant low-speed driving. Since diesel fuel traditionally has been cheaper to refine than gasoline, it historically has been priced lower. This has meant the extra cost of purchasing a diesel-powered vehicle could be recouped in three or four years. However, the diesel-fuel price advantage is moot in today's volatile, unpredictable oil market, where diesel-fuel prices can be equal to or higher than gasoline in some areas. Also, diesel engines are now more expensive to purchase due to improved technology, increased demand straining supply, and generous cash and finance incentives offered on gas-powered trucks that widen the price gap. The fuel economy and longevity benefits remain true, reducing the overall cost of ownership, but diesels have lost some financial edge.

So why are diesels so popular in heavy-duty pickups if they're not saving as much money? Torque. Today's truck customers want pulling power for towing, and diesel offers that extra grunt. Horse trailers are now bigger, with some even featuring living quarters. Recreational travel trailers increase in size and weight with each new amenity. Race and show cars are being towed in bigger trailers to accommodate tools, supplies, and other needs. And everyone wants a bigger boat. With Interstate speed limits back up to 65 mph and higher, drivers towing these big trailers need more pulling power to enter on-ramps safely and maintain speed on steep mountain roads.

Gas vs. Diesel
Gas engines may provide more horsepower but diesel engines inherently offer more torque for acceleration and pulling power. All of the Big Three's diesel engines are rated at near or more than 600 lb-ft of torque, while their biggest gas engine is rated at 455 lb-ft. This advantage is achieved through a number of dynamics that differentiate diesels from gasoline engines, beginning with the fuel. Diesel fuel is heavier and carries more carbon atoms than gasoline, therefore it has about 15 percent more energy density. Since engines convert heat energy from the fuel into mechanical energy, diesels offer more power and miles per gallon. Although a diesel operates on a four-stroke cycle just like a gas engine, there are major differences in each stroke:

- Intake Stroke: Diesel engines have an open intake manifold, so a full charge of air can be drawn into the cylinders on every intake stroke. Gas engines have a throttle valve that regulates how much air-which is mixed with fuel in proportion to the air-is drawn into the cylinders. In its simplest terms, an engine is an air pump; more air moving through the engine results in more power.

- Compression Stroke: Gas engines typically run a compression ratio of 8:1 up to 10:1. Diesel engines can run over 20:1. Higher compression facilitates efficient burning of fuel, hence more power and better economy. Gas engines cannot run high compression because the heat would cause the air-fuel mixture to self-ignite prematurely causing a power loss.

- Ignition and Power Stroke: Gas engines ignite the air-fuel mixture with a spark plug. Diesel engines inject a calibrated amount of fuel into the compressed air, where heat from the internal combustion chamber ignites the fuel. With a gas engine, the combustion is more controlled, but the burning process is limited. With a diesel, the instant combustion is more violent, lasts longer (depending on the length of the fuel-injection pulse), and literally pounds the cylinder walls and pistons, resulting in more noise. Diesel engines are also designed to have a longer crankshaft stroke than gas engines. The geometric principles are complicated, but a longer stroke combined with the longer burning results in considerably more torque.

- Exhaust Stroke: Both engines are similar in that the piston forces hot gasses into the exhaust manifold. But most diesel engines are equipped with turbochargers that use exhaust gasses to spin a turbine to pump large amounts of fresh air back into the intake manifold. Today's factory-installed turbochargers on diesels can provide 30 pounds per square inch of boost. Gas engines can hardly handle much more than 15 psi, unless they're modified.

Diesel Myths & Technology
Recent advancements in fuel-injection technology combined with improved engine design have refined diesel operation and efficiency. Many of the enduring myths and annoyances are no longer applicable.

Modern diesel performance parts engines are equipped with four valves per cylinder to increase air flow by reducing interference. This configuration also allows engineers to position the fuel injector in the center of the combustion chamber for uniform fuel dispersion within the cylinder. Computers can manage the fuel injectors with such precision that multiple injections of different fuel volumes are made during each power stroke. By introducing a small dose of fuel, called a pilot injection, just a few ten-thousandths of a second before the main shot of fuel, the combustion is "softer" and noise is reduced considerably. A small, third aftershot of fuel can help reduce harmful emissions by lowering combustion temperature. Some engine manufacturers are even looking at fourth and fifth injections to shape the fuel curve and further smooth out the combustion.

Key to programming such delicate fuel events is a common-rail fuel-injection system that supplies fuel at pressures from 2,000 psi up to more than 23,000 psi. Gas engines with electronic fuel injection run at 40 to 60 psi. Older diesels had separate fuel lines from the fuel pump to each injector. The pressure and injection timing were dependent on engine speed, which sometimes led to a fuel-delivery lag at high engine speeds.

Today, a common-rail system links all the injectors to a feed line that is independent of engine speed, allowing the engine-management computer to control fuel exactly as programmed by the engineers. A sophisticated fuel system and advanced turbocharger are just two reasons why diesels are more expensive than gas engines. Because of the intense cylinder pressures, all diesel components are built to withstand more punishment, and the cooling system is designed to handle extreme temperatures. The high compression ratio requires an extremely strong starter and heavy-duty battery. Manufacturers also know that diesel truck owners drive their vehicles more-J.D. Power and Associates says diesel trucks are driven 22 to 39 percent more than their gas counterparts-and load them with more weight. Therefore, engine castings are thicker and moving parts such as the crankshaft, pistons, and valves are more robust. All this extra beef means diesels are heavier and more durable, so it's not uncommon for diesel engines to go 250,000 miles before a rebuild is even considered. On the downside, some maintenance procedures are more expensive. Diesels need about 12 quarts of oil, compared to five or six in gas engines, and diesel fuel filters and water separators need close attention. But gas engines have spark plugs and ignition components that need replacement.

Which to Buy?
Gas engines have advantages that should be considered when choosing a vehicle. Gasoline doesn't smell as bad as diesel and is much easier to purchase, especially in urban areas. Gas engines generally have snappier throttle response for easier passing at highway and freeway speeds. For those living in cold-weather states, gas engines used to have a big advantage in starting. But recent advancements in heating elements for the fuel, engine block, and intake manifold on diesels have made starting much easier in freezing weather, narrowing the advantage of quicker-firing gasoline powerplants.

Gas engines are perceived to pollute less because older diesels often belched black smoke, but the gap in actual tailpipe emissions is closing quickly. A new round of regulations went into effect for 2004, reducing diesel pollution by 90 percent from 20 years ago. In 2007, more regulations will reduce the particulate or soot content dramatically, which will virtually eliminate any smoke. And in 2006, low-sulfur diesel fuel will be mandated, removing most of the odor and allowing the use of catalytic converters. For those who want a diesel engine but truly scorn the diesel smell, they can always switch to biodiesel fuel. Users say the exhaust smells like French fries. Another advantage beyond increased torque and mileage for diesels has surfaced in recent months: Resale trends show that vehicles with diesel engines tend to retain more value than those with gasoline engines. Of course, in the case of commercial vehicles, this benefit can be offset by a rough service life. Each example is different, but the investment in a diesel drivetrain can repay itself in several forms. We continue to advise consumers that work or recreation requirements-not image-be the primary motivation when purchasing a heavy-duty truck. The same criteria are also important when choosing between gas and diesel engines. Fuel prices and new-vehicle incentives will be major factors in whether diesels can offer added value in addition to their ability to perform work assignments. But some truck owners simply want a diesel, regardless of need or economics, and they'll forgive any annoyances associated with the engine. According to J.D. Power and Associates, overall customer satisfaction is higher with diesel engines, even though owners report more problems. Should diesel penetration continue to increase in heavy-duty trucks, perhaps manufacturers will offer diesels in light-duty and even compact pickups. As diesels become lighter, quieter, and more efficient, there should be additional opportunities for all vehicles to benefit from this technology.

New Dorman Diesel Replacement Parts Now Available at Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/08/2014 -- A lot of OEM replacement parts for modern diesels used to be available only at the dealer. But thanks to Dorman, a lot of those parts are now available at Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada, and for a lot less than what the dealer would charge.

Dorman's diesel line features parts that are common wear items or parts that have a high failure rate. Instead of merely copying the OEM design, Dorman reengineers them to eliminate the factory failure points. Dorman also designs its replacement parts so you only replace the broken item, not an entire assembly or module, and all of the hardware, gaskets, etc. needed to complete the repair are included. That saves both time and money.

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada carries new Dorman diesel replacement parts including:

Exhaust Manifolds for Ford and Dodge/Ram

Diesels run hot, especially turbocharged diesels. That means the exhaust manifolds are susceptible to fatigue and cracking due to extreme temperature variations and hot/cold cycles. Dorman exhaust manifolds are made from OEM-quality or better materials and fit like factory. Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada has them for Ford 6.9/7.3L Powerstroke and Dodge/Ram 5.9/6.7L Cummins engines.

Dorman Fuel Pump Driver Module for GM Duramax

Dorman reengineered its fuel pump driver module to address the failure points in the OEM design. They have a newly designed microprocessor that provides greater response time and reliability; it effectively regulates voltage to the fuel pump and maintains proper fuel pressure over the full operating range of the engine. The cover is powdercoated for better corrosion resistance, and rubber mounting bushings position the module away from vehicle mounting points for increased protection from corrosion. The module is available for 1995-2002 GM 6.5L Duramax.

EGR Cooler for Ford 6.0L Powerstroke

The OEM EGR cooler on Ford's 6.0L is known to fail, even at relatively low mileage. Dorman offers two types. The OEM-style cooler improves on the factory design by using fully welded internal fins instead of brazed fins. The Dorman-engineered cooler has a straight tube core that reduces soot collection and has no fins to come apart. Both coolers come with gaskets and hardware.

Dorman also has online resources available at Dormandiesel.com. It features a Diesel Buyers Guide that lists every diesel-specific part Dorman makes, plus application and part crossover information. It also has a Resource Library with how-to videos, parts lists by application, and more.

With its steel chassis and completely aluminum body, the vehicle's centre of gravity changes and becomes lower, making the ride more dynamic. The vehicle feels more manoeuvrable for weaving in and out of traffic and the weight transfer is less significant. Thankfully, Ford has improved the braking but the recalibrated power steering still seems a tad over-assisted.

As for the rest, we liked how quiet the ride is and its improved overall comfort. There's no doubt that this new generation will force the competition to react.
Ford and Dodge pulled out of the segment several years ago, citing weak demand and the increasing affordability and efficiency of their full-size trucks. Chevy's previous Colorado was a halfhearted effort by the automaker's own admission, and it was axed in 2012. Honda's oddball Ridgeline didn't live up to its potential, and Nissan's current Frontier feels like an antique.

The last time any of these pickups got a thorough redesign was in 2005. That same year, mid-size trucks made up 4.1% of all vehicle sales, a number that withered to 1.5% by 2013, according to Edmunds.com

Yet GM sees possibilities in the segment, and points to Toyota's Tacoma as evidence. It, too, dates to 2005, but Toyota has given it regular tweaks to keep the Tacoma relevant. And it gobbles up the lion's share of the segment — 160,000 of the 228,000 total sales in 2013.

This is the truck GM is unabashedly targeting with its Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. But GM is also hoping to entice back crossover owners who may have liked the utility of a truck but didn't want to pay a penalty in ride quality or comfort.

Truck customers, from half-ton to commercial, have a demanding range of needs and require their vehicles to provide high levels of capability. Ram trucks are designed to deliver a total package.

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and CanadaDuramax 2.8L: Meet the 4-Cylinder Diesel Coming to the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon

The future of U.S. diesel pickup engines, keep a close eye on what’s happening 8,500 miles west of Detroit. Or for that matter, anywhere else but on the North American continent.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/08/2014 -- We love our high-horsepower, V-8 gas and diesels and big pickups here in the U.S. But the rest of the world is quite happy driving V-6 and 4-cylinder diesels in mid-size trucks.

That's why GM, among others, has invested a lot of time and money engineering some of the best little diesels on the planet and doing so on the other side of the world. Case in point: The 2nd generation 163-horsepower, 2.5L and 200-horsepower 2.8L Duramax (MY14) four-bangers recently introduced in Bangkok, Thailand.

GMs Thailand marketing numbers say that the first generation in a 4×4 Chevrolet Colorado provides fuel economy of 25.57 mpg—and the new version is 6 percent better. Both engines will be showing up in the Thailand and Southeast Asian Colorado pickup truck and Trailblazer SUV, two of Chevrolet's most popular overseas models.

And in November, GM announced that the redesigned Chevrolet Colorado will be getting this Duramax diesel as an option starting in 2015.

"When we launched the first generation Duramax four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines two years ago, both the 2.5-liter and 2.8-liter variants delivered best in class power and torque outputs," said Nicola Menarini, Global Chief Engineer, GM Powertrain.

"The new-generation, MY14 Duramax engines just raised that bar even further with unprecedented levels of output from a compact and highly-efficient construction. When we were developing the second-generation Duramax engine, outright power and torque outputs were not the main priorities," Menarini said.

The 2.8L has several new parts, namely a new water-cooled variable-geometry turbocharger, a new high-pressure common-rail fuel delivery system, a new Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, a new intake manifold, a new cylinder head, a new cylinder block, a new balancer shaft unit and a new Engine Control Module (ECM).

The 2nd Gen Duramax fours are also very clean: GM says both engines are Euro-4 compliant and can be upgraded to meet Euro-5, -6 and U.S. emission standards if necessary.

The new Duramax engines were engineered in Europe and the U.S., with global application as one of its developmental objectives. They are being built in the $200 million GM Powertrain Thailand plant, which is their most advanced diesel engine facility.

Check out our article on the Colorado and a huge photo gallery by clicking here.

Duramax 2.5L/2.8L Key Components

Commonrail system - The high pressure fuel pump of the second generation Duramax engine operates at pressures up to 2,000 bar, enabling increased engine efficiency. It provides a high pressure fuel in the common rail system and a fine vapor is sprayed into the engine based on input from the ECMto ensure efficient combustion and performance while reducing CO2 and fuel consumption.

Turbo (2.8L) - The improved variable-geometry turbo incorporates a water-cooling system in the turbine housing to reduce heat when operating at high speeds and full load. This feature extends the life of the turbo and the engine

EGR valve and EGR cooler - The new EGR system Decreases exhaust emissions (oxides of nitrogen / NOx) by reducing charge temperature and reducing excess levels of O2 in the combustion chamber. The new Duramax engine uses an Electric EGR valve for greater precision and a larger EGR cooler to further reduce recirculated exhaust gas temperature.

Intake manifold - The new engine uses an enhanced, lighter and higher efficiency intake manifold, which helps improve overall engine performance. The redesigned and improved intake manifold allows increased exhaust gas recirculation and increases air intake efficiency. In conjunction with the new EGR system emissions are reduced.

Cylinder Head - An improved and redesigned cylinder head has a larger exhaust port and water passage to enhance cooling efficiency. The new engine comes with an improved oil distribution channel to enhance lubricant supply in the cylinder head. The second generation cylinder head is lighter and increases overall engine efficiency.

Cylinder block - New water jacket and cooling circuit design in the new cylinder block helps improve heat exchange. The new cylinder block is also lighter, , which contributes to improved vehicle efficiency

Balance shaft unit - Reduces vibration and noise caused by crankshaft and reciprocating parts. Redesigned components inside the balancer shaft and an improved production process reduces engine vibration and noise.

Engine control module (ECM)- New software and hardware was developed by the GM engineering team for quicker response, improved accuracy and precision of overall engine control. The second generation engine offers better fuel economy, performance and lower emissions.

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada Discusses Driven: 2014 Ram Eco Diesel

Eco Trucks are everywhere and they’re all a bit like Jumbo Wieners or Military Intelligence in that they’re oxymoronic and seem self-contradicting.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/08/2014 -- But, in light of consumer demands for ever-improving fuel efficiency and performance, as well as the recent auto-industry trend of adding the 'ECO' suffix to as much vehicular nomenclature as possible, Eco Trucks are springing up everywhere, and they're not going away.

Following last year's inclusion of the Pentastar V6 engine under the hood of select RAM 1500 models, the new ECODIESEL engine provides shoppers yet another way to save at the pumps while enjoying all the manly-man benefits of driving the handsome RAM 1500.

The numbers? The Italian-built diesel V6 displaces three litres, uses one variable-geometry turbocharger and makes 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft of torque. That's more torque than the 5.7-litre HEMI V8, and without the giant fuel bill, since diesel fuel, by volume, contains more energy than gasoline which means engines that burn it can burn less of it. So, you get the torque output of a big V8, the promise of a slashed fuel bill, and towing capacity exceeding 9,000 lbs.

That, wrapped up in a package with all of the benefits of the latest RAM 1500. The recently refreshed cabin is nice to look at, handy in terms of storage space and media hookups and clever little bins and compartments and nooks for your stuff all over the place.

Beneath the rear floor are even two deep storage bins that can be removed and washed out, say, if your kids want to bring anything gross home from the swamp. Up front, the partially-digital instrument cluster, which can call up just about any info you like, is another delightful touch, as is the central command screen interface, which is the fastest-reacting, most easy-to-use and responsive unit you'll find in a pickup today.

Other typical RAM traits abound here. It rides like it looks like it rides — big, heavy, tough and robust — though smooth sailing on smooth surfaces, and with a jiggly but satisfying ruggedness on the rough stuff.

And the new engine is just what your writer expected of a new, advanced diesel powerplant. Start it up, and you barely hear a peep. The exhaust sneaking noiselessly from the pipes is free of stinky soot and smells clean and clear, too. Heck, even with 5,000 kilometres on the dial, the inside of the tester's dual exhaust tips were still squeaky clean.

Sure, you get the signature diesel clatter and rattle when you take off, but it's minuscule in volume and vibration, and settles out into a deep hum as the revs climb. You can hear the turbo, just a bit. But it's all so quiet, you don't even need to turn it off in the Tim's drive-thru to order your coffee. And smooth.

And quick even, once you overcome the lazy throttle pedal calibration with a good stomp of the right foot. It's as peaceful, effortless and laid-back a diesel engine as I've ever used during light-footed driving and cruising, and turns in giggle-eliciting low and mid-range torque for passing and merging as required. Plus, it provides access to a fuel source that, depending on the season and your locale, may well be well cheaper than gasoline.

But the engine isn't free and, at $4,500, the ECODIESEL will require potential shoppers to do a little math to figure out if it's worthwhile as an investment or business decision. I can provide the following information should you be attempting to make that decision.

On my watch, the tester put away a measured-by-hand average of 9.3L/100km after plenty of in-town driving and speedy highway cruising. Easily, with complete break-in and a lighter foot than your writer, drivers will have this figure down into the 8s.

With gasoline V6, an identically-equipped RAM 1500 put away 12.3L/100km on a test-drive last year, with a HEMI V8 a few years prior logging just shy of 17L/100km on my watch. These figures are for where and how I drive, and your real-life figures will vary, so take them as a comparison tool only.

But the point? The technology works. You get more torque than the HEMI and a fuel bill like a CR-V or RAV4. You'll have your own reasons for considering this EcoDiesel engine in your RAM, or for not considering it, but shoppers love options, and this is another one for them to check out.

Those shoppers, with their dollars, not the automakers with their marketing, ultimately decide the fuel-saving technologies that 'win' and survive in the real world. And this Ram ECODIESEL is just another one of those technologies and options to consider. Now's a good time to be shopping for a fuel-efficient truck and shoppers should be sure to consider all options available to them.

There are plenty.

For those after torque output like a massive V8 and fuel bills like a four-cylinder compact crossover, the RAM 1500 can be had with ECODIESEL power from about $37,000.

As for the rest, we liked how quiet the ride is and its improved overall comfort. There's no doubt that this new generation will force the competition to react.

Truck customers, from half-ton to commercial, have a demanding range of needs and require their vehicles to provide high levels of capability. Ram trucks are designed to deliver a total package.

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada Discusses Consumer Reports Crowns Ram Diesel as Best Pickup

Chrysler Group’s Ram pickup outscores Ford and Chevrolet’s full-size trucks when it is equipped with a new diesel engine, Consumer Reports magazine says.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/08/2014 -- The Ram 1500 with the V-6 EcoDiesel engine not only saved substantially more fuel than similar models with gas engines, but did better in road tests than the others as well. It scored 82 in road tests, a point better than a Ram with gas engine that was tested previously.

The EcoDiesel averaged 20 miles per gallon in overall testing and 27 mpg on the highway, well above the Ram with the V-8 gas engine or Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT

"These are about the same fuel-economy numbers that we typically see in a mid-sized SUV," says Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports, in a statement. "Ram is currently the only truck to offer turbo-diesel technology. It will be interesting to see what impact it will have on the half-ton truck market.".

But the EcoDiesel is also is priced higher, a factor thatConsumer Reportssays it doesn't take into effect in rendering scores.

Consumer Reports' testing is considered critical to automakers because or the magazine's notorious independence. It buys its vehicles, for instance, at dealerships rather than depending on loaners from automakers for its testing.

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel wasn't perfect. While the interior was "whisper quiet" on the highway, there was a "telltake diesel chatter" when the truck was idling. It's yet to be seen, as well, how the 2015 Ford F-150 will stack up against it. That pickup, due later this year, is considered revolutionary because its body will be made extensively from aluminum instead of steel, saving up to 700 pounds a vehicle.

As for the rest, we liked how quiet the ride is and its improved overall comfort. There's no doubt that this new generation will force the competition to react.

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada Discusses 2015 Dodge Ram 1500- the First Half Ton Truck Offered with a Diesel

Chrysler Group has decided to increase the percentage of Dodge Ram 1500 pickup trucks powered by diesel engines. This decision is the result of an unexpected demand for the first ever diesel in the Half-ton class.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/08/2014 -- According to Chrysler when the 2015 Ram 1500 was opened for orders, 8000 requests for the diesel were made within three days. This was nearly all the allotted trucks with said powertrain.

So the question is why so much interest?

Building on an already popular truck, the 2013-2014 Motor Trend truck of the year winner, the risky decision to add a diesel engine, not always a popular choice in America, has made the Ram 1500 the most fuel efficient truck in its class at 28 mpg.

The engine is a 3.0L V-6 with outputs of 240 hp and 420 lb-ft. It is dubbed the Ecodiesel, and takes advantage of numerous technologies to improve its thirst.

These technologies include the 8 speed Torque Flight automatic transmission, thermal management system, pulse-width modulation and active aerodynamics(automatic grille shutters and air suspension). Topped with a best in class drag coefficient of 0.36 and a generous 5 year/100000 miles power train warranty, Dodge would appear to have a fantastic product with more than enough grunt for the masses.

Speaking of the grunt, the new Ram 1500 can tow 9200 lbs, thanks to the abundant torque from the diminutive 6 cylinder.

To put the power output from this diesel into perspective for those who are new to the diesel consider that the 3.6 L V6 gasoline produces 305 hp and only 269 lb-ft of torque and can tow a maximum of 7450 lbs if we opt for quad-cab 4X2 with a 3.55 rear end and returns 25 mpg.

So the choice seems simple. If we want to tow buy a diesel. If we worry about fuel costs, buy a diesel. The Ram 1500 will now allow we to pull our trailer to the track or the park without forcing ourselves into a larger less efficient truck.

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada Discusses How 2015 Ford F-150: Punching Above Its Weight

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada discusses Ford sold more than 120,000 units of its F-Series in Canada last year

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/07/2014 -- Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada discusses The full-size pickup category isn't for everyone, but the fact of the matter is that three of the six best-selling vehicles in Canada are pickups. And leading the way is the Ford F Series, with more than 120,000 units sold last year alone, which explains why there's such a fierce battle in this very lucrative segment. After all, this category represents the three American manufacturers' bread and butter.

Each brand has a faithful clientele that is prepared to defend its favourite models tooth and nail. We like the charms of the Ram and those of GM's dynamic duo (Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra), respectively the sportiest and most comfortable of the bunch. The F-150, for its part, is a true work horse whose every detail has been optimized for efficiency.

Tummy tuck
For 2015, the F-150 has undergone a major makeover. These days, fuel economy is the hot-button issue, and pickups aren't exactly renowned for their fuel economy. Ram is turning to a diesel engine while GM (and Ram also) is banking on a more efficient cylinder deactivation system to make its models more efficient. Ford is still showing confidence in its EcoBoost turbo engines, but since the promise of reduced fuel consumption is front and centre in the public mind, Ford decided that this new generation would attack fuel consumption by reducing vehicle weight. As a result, the 2015 F-150 is equipped with a completely aluminum body.

While several manufacturers of luxury models have already adopted aluminum – Jaguar and Tesla, for example – the F-150 is the first pickup to use it extensively. The difference is significant, with the model shedding 318 kilos (700 lbs) compared to the previous generation. What's more, it has a greater loading capacity, since if one consider its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), a lighter vehicle can transport a heavy load, a most excellent collateral effect. This increase puts the F-150 ahead of its rivals in this regard.

An engine for every need
As for the engine, the 3.5-litre V6 is still there equipping the base trims. With its 283 horsepower and 255 lbs.-ft. of torque, it isn't the most powerful, but will do for smaller jobs. Representing most past sales, the 5.0-litre V8 is back and continues to deploy 385 horsepower. The numbers haven't yet been announced, but its capabilities should be slightly higher this year.

The most capable engine is the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 that now has a payload of 3,180 pounds and a 12,200-pound towing capacity (1,000 pounds more than before). Not only does this engine improve the F-150's towing capacity, but we won't have to pay the tax for large-cylinder capacity vehicles since it's less than 4.0 litres, thus saving us several hundred dollars per year and pretty much making up for the extra amount we'll pay at purchase.

The big news for 2015 is the arrival of the 2.7-litre six-cylinder EcoBoost engine. In the middle of the line-up, it develops 325 horsepower and 375 lbs.-ft. of torque. Useless, we say? Don't bet on it, since it features an excellent 8,500-pound towing capacity while promoting fuel economy. The principle behind this engine is simple: it's aimed at those who need good capabilities every now and again. Why would we drive a V8 all year long if we only need to tow a boat or trailer a few times in the summer? At the end of the day, this engine will meet the needs of 90% of current buyers.

With these choices, Ford wants to offer engines that meet specific needs, with an emphasis on the lowest possible fuel consumption. As for the 6.2-litre V8, it will be back in the next Raptor, a version that has yet to be officially announced.

The choice of version, cab, length of wheelbase and body remain the same, but there's a new Sport Package that features a monochromatic colour scheme and looks like the old F-150 FX4 whose components dedicated to off-roading are now part of the optional FX4 package. The F-150 XL is still the basic version, the Platinum remains the top-end version and the XLT is the bestseller.

A few style changes
The new F-150's style is inspired by the Atlas concept vehicle that was introduced at the last Detroit Auto Show, but as is often the case, the designers remained a little more staid. The front has remained the most faithful to the concept with the imposing grille and reimagined headlights. On the sides, note the driver's window that plunges slightly further forward in the door, all to reduce the height of the armrest inside. It seems to lower the beltline, which has a negative effect overall because it makes the vehicle seem less sturdy. The tail end has a restyled tailgate, but there's still no dual exhaust!

In the cab, we can now get bucket seats and a central console on the XLT. The instrumentation has been revised with a new customizable multifunction display screen. The attention to detail is more noticeable and the dashboard looks less cheap: now it's a little more comparable to what Ram is offering. Of course, they took the opportunity to improve the model's features with the addition of things like a 360-degree camera, 110-volt electrical outlets and much more.

On the road
The F-150 that we test drove was equipped with the new 2.7-litre EcoBoost, and we were surprised by the far-from-anemic engine's overall performance. It gives up only a few hundredths of a second in its 0-100 km/hr time to more powerful engines, while providing good pickup thanks to its generous torque. After a few hundred kilometres, we recorded an average fuel consumption of about 10.21 L/100 km, but we could have scored better had we driven at a more leisurely pace. Not too shabby for a vehicle capable of towing 8,500 pounds!

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada Discusses How Ram to Boost EcoDiesel Pickup Production Driving the 2015 Chevy Colorado

Pickup trucks aren't cheap any more. Ten years ago, a well equipped full-sized pickup would cost you anywhere between $35,000 for a loaded four-wheel drive gas model to $45,000 for a heavy-duty diesel.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/06/2014 -- These days that loaded $35,000 full-sized truck will cost well over $55,000; while the top-of-the-line $45,000 truck now lands in the upper deck of high prices, with a sticker that can break $70,000 in deluxe models.

Cheap financing, seven year loans, and an insatiable demand for four-door models has priced full-size trucks to shocking levels. Yet mid-sized trucks have not stepped in to fill this modern void due to hefty full-sized truck profits and stringent CAFE regulations. As a result, mid-sized trucks like the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma have remained largely unchanged in nearly a decade, and compact trucks are all but extinct in North America.

Consequently, a lot of brand loyal truck buyers who need a replacement are now standing in the sidelines waiting for that better truck.

This past weekend we found two of them. The 2015 mid-sized Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon will likely become in the 2010s what the Ford Explorer was to the SUV in the 1990s: A redefined idea of what passes for a do-it-all family vehicle.

Seven trim levels are offered between the Colorado and Canyon, along with six extended-cab and crew cab configurations, and three rear-suspension designs. Each model offers a little bit of everything from a sports truck with a 7,000 lb. towing capacity, to a refined luxury cruiser that is nearly as quiet on the road as a modern day mid-sized sedan.

The 2015 Chevy Colorado is squarely designed as a mid-sized sports truck with a front fascia and dashboard drawn to mimic the Chevy Camaro. The base model Colorado starts at $20,995 and comes surprisingly well-powered with a 2.5-liter, 200 hp direct-injection four-cylinder that can tow up to 3,500 pounds without any modifications.

Customers who opt for the 3.6-liter V6 will get the same 306 hp variable-valve timing engine that is found in a large part of GM's premium lineup, from the $55,000 Cadillac ATS to the $40,000 Chevy Impala. All two-wheel drive models are rated at a best-in-class 18 city and 26 highway, while four-wheel drive models only decline slightly to 17 city and 24 highway.

Four-cylinder models increased these fuel economy numbers by only 1 to 2 mpg due to the variable-valve timing technology in the V6. However, we found that the four-cylinder engine was far more willing to rev at higher rpms and offered a more sporting pretense than the six-cylinder when it came to daily driving. Those who don't plan on towing more than 3,500 pounds will be perfectly fine with the four-cylinder in virtually all real-world driving scenarios. While the Chevy Colorado is tuned primarily for sport, the GMC Canyon represents the industry's first luxury mid-sized truck, much like how the Ford Explorer Sport Trak once offered a combination of a pickup utility and SUV comforts. Premium materials and soft touch surfaces adorn nearly everything on the interior of the GMC Canyon from the dashboard to the door panels.

The GMC Canyon also receives a variety of small touches that are unique to the segment. LED headlights in the Canyon provide a more polished and refined SUV-like look to the truck. In person, the GMC Canyon models all look far more upscale than any other midsize pickup — although its prices rise into the $30,000 to $40,000 range.

The GMC Canyon's seats are also given better lumbar support and unique stitching that manages to help make this truck feel more like a premium mid-sized SUV from the inside out. Brushed aluminum accents on the steering wheel and center dashboard controls offer a nice contrast to a class of truck that traditionally has to get by on thin plastics and budget-focused materials.

Most mid-sized truck owners will be stunned at the difference between the current interiors on the long-in-the-tooth Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier, and those of the new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. The hard plastic dashboards and easy to scratch black door panels of the competitors lower-end offerings are thankfully nowhere to be found on these two new models.

On the technology front, the Canyon and Colorado offer an optional 8-inch touch screen that provides 4G LTE connectivity and WiFi starting at only $5 a month. The WiFi system can work within a 50-feet range and iPhone users (4S and newer) can connect to a Siri Eyes Free program that lets text messages be read and responded to without having to take their eyes off the road. A one-touch voice-command system on the steering wheel also allows simple voice command for phone calls and audio controls. All of these technologies worked without error on the Colorado and Canyon models we tested.

Both models benefit from having over 70% of their cabs and frames built out of high strength steel. The safety and structural rigidity of these mid-sized trucks is also assisted by technologies which, not too surprisingly, can now be found in most mid-sized sedans. All models come standard with stability control, four-wheel ABS, and six airbags (front and sides.) Higher-end versions of the Colorado (LT, Z71) and Canyon (SLE, SLT, SLT All-Terrain) can also be equipped with the segments first forward-collision alert and lane departure warning systems.

The hauling flexibility in these mid-sized trucks is designed to add extra space and utility whether you're hauling a refrigerator, a kayak, or 4 x 8 sheets of plywood.

Extended bed and Crew Cab models are available with a six-foot two-inch bed that can be converted into an eight foot bed. The addition of this new GearOn System provides modular cargo dividers and tiered storage for large and small items. All models are now also given 13 tie-downs; including the smaller five-foot two-inch bed that is exclusively available for Crew Cab models. To accommodate the broad spectrum of needs for truck owners, a long list of custom accessories can be special ordered to handle everything from bikes, to jet skis, to general tools and equipment.

GM might not like to hear it, but the Canyon and Colorado not only decimate their mid-size competition, they also offer a comparable alternative to full-size truck owners for anywhere between a $6,000 and $10,000 discount. As someone who lives in a part of the country where pickups are more common than SUVs, I see the genuine need for a mid-sized truck that offers much of the hauling capabilities of a full-size truck without the heft and super-sized accommodations.

The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon display an intelligent convergence between the comfort and sport of a mid-size SUV, and the work potential of a light-duty full-size pickup. If you are in the market for that type of vehicle, start here.

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada Discusses How Ram to Boost EcoDiesel Pickup Production

Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts Vendor Online in USA and Canada discusses While most automakers offer diesel engines on their heavy duty trucks, Ram is the only one offering a diesel engine for its light-duty pickups.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/06/2014 -- Chrysler said today it will increase production of its Ram 1500 Eco Diesel from 10% to 20% of all light-duty pickups it makes.

While most automakers offer diesel engines on their heavy duty trucks, Ram is the only one offering a diesel engine for its light-duty pickups.

"Innovation sometimes comes with risk, but being first to market with a diesel engine for the half-ton segment has shown to be a great decision for the Ram Brand," Bob Hegbloom, Ram's chief executive said.

So far this year Ram sales are increasing faster than competing pickups, and the diesel engine option is helping fuel those sales. Ram 1500 sales are up 21% through August while Ford's F-150 has slipped 0.4% and Chevrolet Silverado sales has edged up 1%.

"Chrysler's Ram division has been on a tear as the truck market heats up, and the company tries to take advantage of Ford being in transition between its old and new F-Series," said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst at AutoTrader.com. "In fact, Chrysler is running into capacity constraints with a number of models."

Curt Towne, plant manager at Warren Truck assembly plant, said last week that Chrysler is making 250 trucks with diesel engines per day — far more than the 100 per day the plant was initially making.

"The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is a game-changer in the industry, and has proved to be a key to conquest sales over our competitors," Hegbloom said.

According to Chrysler, 60% of all Ram 1500 EcoDiesel buyers previously owned a pickup truck made by a competitor.

Customers are embracing the EcoDiesel because truck buyers like the higher torque and better fuel economy they can get from the engine even though it costs more than a gas engine and diesel costs more than gasoline. Diesel engines generally get 30% to 35% better fuel economy than a gasoline engine of comparable power.

A Ram with an EcoDiesel engine costs about $2,850 more than a 5.7-liter Hemi V8.

The 3.0-liter diesel engine generates 240 horsepower and 420 pound feet of torque and gets 28 miles per gallon on the highway.

The 2015 Ram 1500 is America’s most fuel-efficient pickup truck with its exclusive 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel that packs 240 horsepower, 420 lb.-ft. of torque and 28 miles per gallon (mpg). Fuel economy and the exclusivity of the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is being credited for Ram’s decision to increase the diesel powertrain mix to 20 percent of the total Ram 1500 production volume — double the initial expectation.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/06/2014 -- When the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel opened for orders earlier this year, Ram Truck received more than 8,000 requests within three days, which quickly filled the initial allocation for the exclusive powertrain.

"Innovation sometimes comes with risk, but being first to market with a diesel engine for the half-ton segment has shown to be a great decision for the Ram Brand," said Bob Hegbloom, President and CEO — Ram Truck Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is a game-changer in the industry, and has proved to be a key to conquest sales over our competitors."

2014 Ram EcoDiesel Review – Video

Ram truck is the only manufacturer to offer a light-duty diesel powertrain. Nearly 60 percent of all Ram 1500 EcoDiesel sales are conquest over competitors, an achievement considering brand-loyal strength of the segment. The premium powertrain also contributes to an increase in the Ram 1500s Average Transaction Price according to J.D. Power.

Ram Truck worked with powertrain supplier VM Motori (Fiat Group Automobiles) to increase production to meet North American consumer demand. The total increase in EcoDiesel mix will be completed by the end of November at both Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Michigan and Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Mexico.

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine is mated to the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. Together, the powertrain system delivers an outstanding combination of fuel efficiency at 28 mpg, torque of 420 lb.-ft. and up to 9,200 pounds of towing capability.

The 2015 Ram 1500 capitalizes on a truckload of exclusive, pioneering, fuel-saving systems, including: eight-speed automatic transmission, thermal management system, pulse-width modulation and active aerodynamics with grille shutters and air suspension.

The Ram 1500 earned Motor Trend's Truck of the Year in 2013 and 2014, the first time a vehicle of any type has taken the coveted award back-to-back. The Ram 1500 also won the Truck of Texas in 2013 and 2014 — a rare double, back-to-back combination in the pickup segment.

Powertrain
Aptly branded EcoDiesel, the 3.0-liter powerplant is a turbocharged 60-degree, dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) 24-valve V-6 that produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque that is more efficient than all V-6 gasoline engines in the half-ton category. This abundant torque from a 3.0-liter engine is the enabler for 9,200 pounds of towing capacity while delivering fuel economy of 28 mpg on the highway.

Like the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 gasoline engines already offered on the Ram 1500, the EcoDiesel V-6 is mated to the TorqueFlite 8, the only eight-speed automatic transmission offered in the half-ton class.

The EcoDiesel, developed and manufactured by VM Motori (a Chrysler supplier since 1992), is one of the most advanced diesel engines in the marketplace. Equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction, it is emissions-compliant in all 50 states.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine (Ward's 10 Best Engines Award three years in a row) with variable-valve timing (VVT) offers 305 horsepower, 269 lb.-ft. of torque and best-in-class gasoline fuel economy of 25 mpg.

The legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 with fuel-saving cylinder shut-off and VVT provides 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque.

The class-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission (TorqueFlite 8) — standard equipment with 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel and 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar — doubles the amount of gears compared to the previously available four-speed automatic transmission, which improves drivability and enhances fuel efficiency. The eight-speed also is available with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8.

The 2015 Ram 1500 has established what is unmistakably the most advanced and efficient truck in the light-duty category, as evidenced by:

Exclusive offering of a small-displacement turbo diesel engine (EcoDiesel V-6)
Exclusive offering of an eight-speed automatic transmission
Best-in-Class capability and fuel economy in a base V-6 gasoline engine (Pentastar V-6 mated to eight-speed transmission)
Only manufacturer in light-duty class to offer diesel, gasoline, and flex-fuel (E85 capable 3.6-liter V-6) engines
Engineering Fuel Economy

Weight reduction
With the 2013 model year, the Ram 1500 benefitted from a number of weight saving features. Contingent on the model, the frame received a weight reduction of up to 30 pounds by using advanced high-strength steels. Also benefitting from advanced metal, box floor cross-members in the bed eliminated seven pounds and a front bumper design removed four pounds. Additionally, aluminum lower control arms in the front suspension contributed to weight reduction. The Ram 1500 also features an aluminum hood, saving 26 pounds. Underneath the hood, the combination of the new Pentastar V-6 engine and new TorqueFlite 8 transmission reduced weight by approximately 76 pounds. The V-8 engine and TorqueFlite 8 together reduced weight by more than 30 pounds.

The weight reductions not only allow for more convenience, comfort and entertainment features but also best-in-class fuel-saving technology such as thermal management and active aerodynamics.

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is a fuel-saving technology for the Ram 1500, which reduces parasitic electrical load. The technology not only eliminates unnecessary load on the alternator but also improves the durability of benefitting systems. The forward cooling fan takes advantage of PWM, adding a 0.2 percent improvement in fuel efficiency.

Variable displacement compressor (VDC)
As opposed to a "fixed" displacement compressor, the variable displacement compressor (VDC) automatically varies its pumping capacity to meet air conditioning demands rather than working in an on/off fashion. As a result, the variable displacement compressor lessens loads on the engine, reducing parasitic losses for enhanced fuel efficiency and helping to maintain a consistent cockpit temperature. The technology also reduces related noise and vibration annoyances.

When the interior cabin temperature is higher than what's desired (outside the automatic temperature control setting), the VDC increases refrigeration capacity until the desired temperature is reached. Once the temperature is reached, the VDC automatically reduces its capacity to maintain the desired temperature rather than shutting off completely.

The overall result is smoother compressor transitions, less noise and greater fuel efficiency.

Pulse-width modulated blower
Like the VDC, the pulse-width modulated (PWM) blower continually controls fan speeds for optimal performance in all driving scenarios; quiet, efficient operation; and virtually unnoticeable performance. Not unlike other PWM applications that debuted on the 2013 Ram 1500, the pulse-width blower ensures an infinite amount of varying fan speeds to satisfy every customer-requested condition in relation to the air conditioning system.

Unsurpassed powertrain warranty — five years/100,000 miles
The 2015 Ram 1500 is backed with a five-year /100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty. The powertrain-limited warranty covers the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair a covered powertrain component — engine, transmission and drive system. Coverage also includes free towing to the nearest Ram dealer, if necessary. The warranty also is transferable, allowing customers who sell their truck during the warranty period to pass the coverage onto the new owner.

The standard three-year / 36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty provides bumper-to-bumper coverage for the Ram 1500, from the body to the electrical system.

Manufacturing
The 2015 Ram 1500 is built at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant (Warren, Michigan), which has built more than 13 million trucks since it started operations in 1938. Regular Cab models of the 2015 Ram 1500 are built at the Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Saltillo, Mexico.

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine is manufactured by Fiat Group Automobiles' VM Motori in Cento, Italy. Chrysler Group has utilized VM Motori diesel engines since 1992.

Dirty Diesel Customs Discusses Diesel Performance 101

How Does a Diesel Engine Work?

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/03/2014 -- Over the past ten to fifteen years, diesel engines and the vehicles they come in have exploded in popularity in the United States and throughout the world. Why is that? What makes the diesel engine such an economical, powerful and practical choice for so many drivers today? To understand the "why", it's important to understand how a diesel engine works. We'll also look at three of the main differences between diesel engines and gasoline engines because a comparison will make it clear why diesel performance modifications are possible and ultimately so effective.

The first difference is the way in which gas and diesel engines use air. Gasoline engines take in a mixture of gasoline and air. Once taken in, that mixture is compressed and ignited with a spark from a spark plug. Diesel engines on the other hand take in only air. The air is compressed and then fuel is injected into the compressed air. When air is compressed its temperature increases, so the cause of combustion in a diesel engine is the heat of the compressed air. Once the injected fuel meets the heated compressed air it combusts spontaneously. This compressed air typically reaches temperatures of 700-900 °C or 1300-1650°F.

The second difference between gas and diesel engines is compression rate. Compression rate is a huge factor in both the efficiency of the diesel engine and the ability to get more horsepower out of it. Typical gasoline engines have a compression ratio of between 8:1 and 12:1; diesel engines, on the other hand, typically range anywhere from 14:1 and as high as 25:1. The higher compression ratio of a diesel engine allows it to perform much more efficiently. To further aid a diesel engine in the compression and cooling of intake air, turbochargers and intercoolers are added to most diesel engines.

Fuel injection is the third main point of difference between diesel and gasoline engines. Gasoline engines usually use one of two methods, either carburetion or port fuel injection. With carburetion the air and fuel is well mixed before it enters the cylinder. With port fuel injection the fuel is injected right before what is called the intake stroke, and occurs outside of the cylinder where the combustion will occur. Diesel engines use direct fuel injection. Diesel fuel is injected directly into the cylinder where the combustion is occurring. Of course, the injector itself must be able to withstand both the temperature and the pressure inside of the cylinder while still being able to deliver the diesel fuel in a mist that is fine enough to allow for combustion. Part of getting that mist to combust is proper mist circulation in the cylinder so that it is evenly distributed. To aid in fuel circulation diesel engines have special induction valves or pre-combustion chambers.

Perhaps the largest difference in the diesel engine vs. the gasoline engine is the injection process as a whole. Since gasoline engines mix air and fuel and ignite that combination with a spark plug, they are limited by low compression ratios. If the air and fuel mixture is too compressed, the mixture will spontaneously ignite, which will cause a knocking sound. Because diesel engines are compressing only air the compression ratio can be much higher and higher compression equals more power!

So now that we understand how a diesel engine works, it's time to take a look at some diesel performance upgrades for our vehicle! Here's a brief list of the most common. If we would like to learn more about these upgrades, check out our Frequently Asked Questions section.

A. Cold Air Intakes – Diesel engines are all about air — the more of it and the cooler it is, the better. With the addition of any diesel performance chip, performance module, or diesel programmer; increasing air-flow is critical to higher horsepower gains without losing fuel mileage as well as extending the life of our turbo diesel engine.

B. Tuners, Chips and Programmers – Gaining more horsepower has never been easier. Most of our performance chips are plug and play or can be installed in under an hour.

C. Diesel Exhaust Systems – Back Pressure and high exhaust temperatures are two of the easiest ways to hurt our engine's life.

D. Diesel Gauges – Monitoring our engine's performance is one of the most important things we can do. The most important diagnostic to pay attention to is our exhaust temperature gauge. If we are more interested in performance we will want to monitor our turbo boost with a boost gauge and our exhaust temperature with a pyrometer gauge.

Navistar International Corporation (NYSE: NAV) announced today that Anhui Jianghuai Navistar Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. (JND), the company's joint venture with Chinese truck maker Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co. Ltd. (JAC), has begun engine production at its new facility in Hefei, China.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/29/2014 -- The new one-million-square foot facility houses an administrative office, a research and development center, and a machining and assembly facility capable of producing 200,000 Euro IV and Euro V compliant engines per year. The plant is also designed to reduce energy consumption by 30 percent through the latest in heating and cooling technologies.

JND engine operations were launched in 2013 in an effort to meet the emerging needs of the Chinese commercial truck market by providing JAC with access to Navistar's emissions compliant engine technology. Prior to the opening of the plant, engine localization and assembly was conducted at JAC's facilities in Hefei. These operations will transition to the new joint venture facility, also located in Hefei.

"We are excited to celebrate this important milestone with our partner JAC and our collaborative efforts to bring the latest in clean-engine technology to China have resulted in a strong, successful and profitable operation from the very start," said Troy Clarke, president and chief executive officer, Navistar International Corporation. "We look forward to supporting China's clean-energy and fuel efficiency efforts as we pursue additional growth opportunities with JAC."

"Through our partnership with Navistar, JND is bringing advanced diesel technology and vehicle integration to our customers," said An Jin, Chairman, JAC Motors. "These products offer enhanced durability and higher fuel efficiency to enable JAC to export globally and continue leading in China's commercial vehicle market."

JAC and Navistar received formal approval for their joint venture from China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in August 2012. In May 2013, engine manufacturing for the joint venture began at JAC's facilities. The first engine was a JAC-designed 2.8-liter diesel engine. JND production of its 3.2- and 4.8-liter engines then began in the fall of 2013.

Leading technology represents new generation of light and medium-duty power in China

JND currently produces 2.8-, 3.2-, and 4.8-liter engines. The engines offer up to 88kW power at 3,600 rpm and 280 N.m torque @ 1800-2800 rpm; 118kW power at 3,000 rpm and 450 N.m torque at 1,500-2,200 rpm; and 140 kW power at 2,200 rpm and 450 N.m torque at 1,200-1,600 rpm.

JND is planning to add a 7.2-liter diesel engine to its product line in 2016 and will continue to explore the possibility of adding more engine products.

Dirty Diesel Customs Discusses Ford Making Moves on Several Fronts

It’s been a busy time lately at Ford Motor Co. where the light truck segment is concerned – and we’re not just talking about the new lighter-weight incarnation of the F-150 pickup, either, though I’m headed to Texas as we “speak” (so to speak) to take those very same 2015 models for a spin.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/29/2014 -- Let's start with the F-150's "bigger brothers," Ford's F-Series Super Duty.

As it stands right now, the OEM expects to build its five millionth Super Duty unit – a line encompassing the F-250 up thru the F-550 – after 15 years of production at its Kentucky Truck Plant next month.

[On another front, the OEM also plans to overhaul its F-650 and F-750 medium-duty lineup for the 2016 model year, too: you can read more on that by clicking here.]

It's also interesting to note the beefier capability of those Super Duty trucks since their introduction in 1999.

Back then, for example, Ford said the largest gasoline engine in the original Super Duty – the Triton 6.8-liter V10 – produced 275 hp and 410 lbs.-ft. of torque, while its 7.3-liter diesel engine produced 235 hp and 500 lbs.-ft. of torque.

Today, by contrast, the Super Duty 6.2-liter gasoline-fired V8 option delivers 385 hp and 405 lbs.-ft. of torque, while the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel supplies 440 hp and 860 lbs.-ft. of torque – all while offering better fuel economy compared to those 1999 powertrains.

That increase in engine power translates into more towing and payload, of course.

Back in 1999, for example, F-350 Super Duty pickup featured a maximum tow capacity rating of 14,600 lbs. But today, the 2015 model F-450 Super Duty pickup leads the way with a standard tow rating of 31,200 lbs.

Some of the more interesting improvements of late, though, are happening over the commercial van side at Ford.

Take, for instance, the OEM's 2015 Ford Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle concept, or Transit PTV, which features what's known as a "prisoner conveyance system" the OEM designed in partnership with Warminster, PA-based Havis Prisoner Transport Solutions.

The Transit PTV not only can carry 12 prisoners, it can do so with a much more fuel efficient footprint, thanks to its three engine options: a gasoline-fired 3.7-liter V6, a gasoline-powered 3.5-liter EcoBoost variant, and a 3.2-liter Power Stroke diesel engine.

Ford added that its new Transit van is garnering a lot of interest – to the point where the OEM just recently announced plans to add another 1,200 new jobs and a second shift to its Kansas City Assembly Plant, where the Transit is built.

Joe Hinrichs (seen at right), Ford's president for the Americas, stressed in an event last week that those 1,200 jobs are in addition to the 2,800 jobs added at Kansas City Assembly Plant in 2012 and 2013 to support the 2015 Transit launch and increased production of F-150 Regular Cab, SuperCab and SuperCrew pickups.

He noted that "KCAP," as the plant is known, is projected to employ more than 6,000 hourly workers by the end of 2014, on a two-shift pattern for Transit production and three-crew pattern for F-150.

Speaking of the new 2015 model F-150, there are a few interesting tweaks to note before we start getting into its road-handling and payload-hauling particulars this week.

First, the new pickup features a veritable host of what Ford calls "driver-assist" technologies that consumers and commercial fleets alike should find extremely useful (you can read more about those by clicking here).

Yet perhaps one of the lesser-known upgrades to the 2015 version of the F-150 is how its exterior paint can better resist fading due to the sun's rays.

The OEM used a device known as a Thermatron at its Florida-based Central Lab to simulate damaging ultra violet (UV) sunrays on prototype parts to help identify the best design for production.

Antiglare testing took place in the Visual Performance Evaluation Lab, also known as the Ford lighting lab; a facility that can replicate almost any sunlight conditions from dawn to dusk using 6,000 watts of light within a planetarium-like dome. The facility can also create changes to natural light caused by weather conditions, noted Cindy McComb, one of the OEM's materials engineers.

Even the Blue Oval and F-150 badges endured 3,000 hours of sun-like punishment in the OEM's labs, McComb said – the equivalent of five years of exposure to actual sun rays. The company's engineers also exposed the three-piece badge to temperatures as cold as 40 degrees below Celsius followed by blasts of 100-degree Celsius steam to help ensure chrome plating adheres so individual pieces of the badge won't warp or crack.

On top of that, Ford's Central Lab engineers placed individual exterior and interior parts on outside racks for six months at a time to look for fading and other signs of degradation. The parts were then examined under a special xenon light to reveal damage invisible to the human eye. Parts are approved for production only when they meet rigorous fade-resistance standards.

"Direct sunlight does more than fade vehicle parts over time – it can also make it hard to see information displayed on gauges and screens used for navigation and entertainment systems," McComb said. "So we used advanced computer-aided design software to identify the least reflective materials to use, and incorporated shaded gauges on the instrument panel of the all-new truck designed to minimize glare."

In some cases, gauges and instruments shaded from glare are enhanced with supplemental lighting throughout the Ford F-150 interior to make them readable in their recessed positions, she added.

"By reducing indirect glare, the driver should practically never see a sun spot in the center screen or instrument cluster," said Cary Diehl, a human factors engineer at Ford. "In addition to testing gauges and screens under these conditions, we looked at the amount of light given off by LEDs [light emitting diodes] in window and steering wheel control switches to ensure they would not be distracting to the driver when lit."

Why? Because F-150 customers using their trucks at job sites don't have the time or the patience to deal with hard-to-read gauges or controls inside the truck.

"Our work in the lighting lab ensures that despite almost any weather outside, customers will find it easy to read controls inside the truck today and years down the road," noted Mahendra Dassanayake, one of Ford's lighting technical specialists.

Certainly sheds new "light" on the subject of light truck testing, now doesn't it? One can only wonder, then, what other design "tweaks" await examination of the 2015 model F-150 in the Lone Star State this week.

New Offerings from Dirty Diesel Customs Optimize Diesel Performance on American Trucks While Keeping Jobs Close to Home

Canada based Dirty Diesel Customs is now creating aftermarket truck parts right here in the Canada , keeping jobs close to home.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/19/2014 -- As the presidential election grows closer, it seems one of the only things both sides can agree on is the lack of jobs in America. Manufacturing jobs, like welding or machining, have largely gone to China or Mexico. With conservatives and liberals disagreeing on how to solve the problem, the everyday American still knows of only one way to help: buy American made products. But it can be hard to find American made parts that don't break the bank.

Dirty Diesel Customs, a Canada based company that creates performance parts for diesel engines, aims to defy that stereotype. For the past seven years, Dirty Diesel Customs has machined and welded all of their parts in their Canada location. Accessories like grills, performance optimizers like diesel exhaust systems, or necessary items like suspension are all available through the company's website: http://www.dirtydieselcustoms.com/

Dirty Diesel Customs's power stroke package for Ford trucks, the 6.0 Powerstroke STAGE 1 Power Package, retails for an affordable 2099.00. This kit improves diesel performance and keeps engines cleaner and cooler. Dirty Diesel Customs also offers similar kits for Chevy, GMC, and Dodge trucks.

"These are the trucks that populate America's heartland," said Michael Mitchell, a spokesperson for MKM Customs. "What we're hoping to do here is help people to save money on diesel, make their truck perform better and sound better, and at the same time keep Americans here at home in good jobs."

The reduced cost of manufacturing overseas often means that foreign businesses can offer pricing American businesses can't, forcing consumers with intentions to buy American to settle for a foreign part. To combat this, Dirty Diesel Customs offers a price match guarantee and free shipping on orders over $100. Under Dirty Diesel Customs's price match guarantee, any product that retails for more than $100 is eligible. Dirty Diesel Customs promises that they will beat a competitor's better price by $5. In addition, Dirty Diesel Customs offers customer support to answer any questions about optimizing diesel performance.

"Our customers love that they can call us and speak to someone locally, instead of getting someone overseas, which is so often the case these days," Mitchell said. Before or after purchasing a new diesel exhaust, Dirty Diesel Customs customer service is available to discuss any concerns or difficulties installing the equipment

Get Better Fuel Economy with an Edge Programmer from Dirty Diesel Performance Parts

Fuel prices are lower than last year, but still too expensive for many average Americans who use trucks for work.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/19/2014 -- With this in mind, auto parts vendors are attempting to accommodate the fuel economy needs of hard working people.

With the average national price for gas hovering around $3.40, drivers around the country are definitely feeling less pain at the pump then they were about a year ago, when regular gas was closer to $3.70. But for those who drive trucks, especially diesel vehicles, the cost of gas can't come down far enough.

Dirty Diesel Customs, an online retailer of aftermarket truck parts, now offers the latest in Edge products to deliver better efficiency and fuel mileage. By installing an Edge programmer, truck owners can maximize the duration of a tank of gas or diesel. Consumer studies have shown that fuel efficiency is one of the biggest challenges faced by truck owners. Many times, truck owners are unhappy with the fuel mileage they get, but they must use the truck for work related purposes, a conflict which puts them in a difficult position.

In addition to increasing fuel economy, edge programmers like the Cummins Juice with Attitude for Dodge models also offer the driver more horsepower and torque, optimizing the vehicle's performance for racing or simply for highway driving. Edge programmers also have safety features, like a turbo timer, which allows time for the engine to cool before the truck is shut off. The programmer's monitor unit also offers the driver the option of seeing up to eight separate functions at once, including speed, engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature, transmission temperature, and barometric pressure.

"In the past, programmers were for guys who wanted to race. However, they increasingly are being bought by average guys who want better fuel mileage and overall performance in their day to day driving," said Michael Mitchell of Dirty Diesel Customs .

"Most people can look at other solutions, like carpooling to work or taking a car. But if you're a carpenter or landscaper, those are not practical solutions," Mitchell added.

In addition to showcasing a vast selection of Edge products, Dirty Diesel Customs offers many other aftermarket accessories for trucks, including wheels, suspension systems, and grills. All welding and machining is done in house at Dirty Diesel Customs's Canada facility. Purchasing aftermarket parts from MKM Customs keeps money here at home in the United States, stimulating the economy and keeping American citizens in jobs.

Improve Your Engine's Performance with Newly Designed Edge Products, Courtesy of Dirty Diesel Performance Parts

Dirty Diesel Customs is a manufacturer and producer of aftermarket automotive parts and accessories for diesel truck engines. The new Edge Products provided by Dirty Diesel Customs will improve and maximize a diesel engine’s performance.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/19/2014 -- Dirty Diesel Customs is an aftermarket automotive parts manufacturer and producer that specializes in diesel engines. Dirty Diesel Customs creates aftermarket automotive parts and accessories for major make and model vehicle brands including Ford, Chevy, GMC, and Dodge.

Every part is manufactured, welded, and machined in-house by a qualified professional. This guarantees the highest quality craftsmanship on every part that is produced, sold, or installed.

Dirty Diesel Customs not only manufactures aftermarket diesel parts, but it also a retails top-of-the-line automotive aftermarket parts. Dirty Diesel Customs carries brand name aftermarket automotive parts by the most respected manufacturers in the industry such as Pacific Performance Engineering, Bully Dog, Flow-Pro, Yukon, and Edge Products.

Dirty Diesel Customs is especially excited to feature Edge Products for a number of reasons.

Edge Products is the premier name in aftermarket performance electronics. Edge Products is a three time recipient of Inc.'s 500 Fastest Growing Privately Held Companies. Edge Products shows its American pride, meanwhile, by manufacturing all of its parts in the United States.

Edge Products manufactures a wide array of aftermarket automotive parts including automotive programmers. An automotive programmer assists in identifying under performing areas in an engine and helps to improve and enhance engine performance.

Programmers may be small but they are powerful nonetheless. A programmer is basically a portable computer that stores a vast amount of data and information concerning the make and model of the vehicle with which the programmer was designed to be used.

When the programmer is in use, it will run diagnostics on a vehicle; when it completes the diagnosis, the operator of the programmer will know exactly how to tweak his or her engine to maximize its performance.
Like life itself, programmers get better all the time.

Edge Products recently produced an automotive programmer that easily outperformed previously released models. The Edge programmer provided by MKM Customs is easy to install and will enhance any diesel engine's performance. The new and improved Edge programmer has these convenient features:

6 On-the-Fly adjustable power levels that can be used to tweak fuel efficiency.
Full-color, high-resolution, 2.4 inch button-controlled screen.
Greatly improves drivability.
Intuitive throttle response.
Compatibility with all Edge Custom dash pods.
Displays dozens of different parameters at one time. This includes boost, power level, intake air temperatures and RPMs.

It is important to note that this product can disable emission equipment. If using DPF/EGR removed tuning, this high performance product is intended solely for closed-course racing. Programmers are not street legal in any state in the United States and it cannot be used on any vehicle registered or certified for highway use.

Dirty Diesel Customs Discusses How to Modify a Diesel Car or Truck for More Performance

Modern diesel engines compete very effectively with petrol engines. Common-rail and some direct-injection turbo diesels are lightning fast, phenomenally fuel efficient and offer phenomenal torque that improves drivability. But is BHP ever enough? If you think performance enhancements are only for petrol engines, think again.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/16/2014 -- Dirty Diesel Customs a Diesel Performance Parts customization vendor in Canada and North America examines how you can get more power from your diesel engine:

1.Power chips and boxes: As simple to install as plug-and-play; in as little as five minutes you can shave upto three seconds from your 0 – 100 acceleration time. Most diesel engines are electronically controlled and a power box will adjust certain control parameters to significantly improve performance. Adding a better intake filter and a free flow exhaust will further improve the performance of your chipped diesel.

2.Turbo-charging: The high compression ratios in diesel engines call for tougher components than those used in petrol engines. As a result, it is easier to install and upgrade turbos on a diesel. Keep in mind that turbo-charging a diesel engine requires an increase in fuel pressure on the fuel pump. Find out more about turbo-charging from this linky.

3.Tweaking fuel pumps: Simple fuel pump tuning will provide more power, albeit at the expense of fuel efficiency. The most frequently modified fuel pumps are manufactured by Bosch. Contact a diesel fuel pump overhauling service to help you tune your pump.

4.Improved inhaling: More air means more oxygen which means more power. Since turbo-charged diesel engines need lots of cool air, RAM intakes offer noticeable performance improvements. The use of performance-grade filters also improves the intake characteristics of turbo-charged diesel engines.

5.Improved exhaling: A free-flowing exhaust leads to the smooth discharge of exhaust gases and results in improved performance. Also, turbo back-pressure is reduced by good exhaust flow.

6.LPG fumigation: Akin to NOS injection in petrol engines, LPG fumigation is the introduction of propane into the air intake of a diesel engine. The difference is that NOS can be used only for short bursts while LPG can be used for longer distances. LPG works like a fuel additive, providing a small amount of fast-burning fuel to aid combustion. It is relatively safe to use: diesel ignites at 350 degrees while LPG ignites at close to 500 degrees, so LPG combustion occurs only after the diesel has ignited. LPG kits for diesels are similar to the LPG kits used on normal petrol cars, except that they are boost-referenced as rather than vacuum-referenced. A properly installed LPG fumigation system will result in a better-running diesel engine. Recommended links for more information are mrsharkey and xtremediesel.

Dirty Diesel Customs Discusses Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Tops Among Half-Ton Pickups

Consumer Reports said the hot-selling Ram 1500 EcoDiesel outscored competitors from Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. to claim the magazine’s top spot among full-size light-duty pickups.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/08/2014 -- The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel earned high marks for fuel economy and its "whisper quiet" interior. The influential magazine said that, in testing, the diesel-powered half-ton achieved average fuel economy of 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, far above competitors.

"These are about the same fuel-economy numbers that we typically see in a midsized SUV," Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports (CR), said in a statement. "Ram is currently the only truck to offer turbo-diesel technology. It will be interesting to see what impact it will have on the half-ton truck market."

Powered by a 3-liter V-6 turbodiesel engine, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel went on sale earlier this year and was met with great demand from consumers. This summer, Chrysler Group L.L.C. executives said EcoDiesel Ram 1500s were sitting on dealer lots an average of 13 days before they were sold, about six times faster than gasoline-powered Ram 1500s.

CR's vehicle opinions are broadly used by consumers as they make their vehicle purchasing decisions in part because the magazine purchases its test vehicles directly from dealerships instead of having them supplied by manufacturers.

The EcoDiesel pickup scored 82 in road testing, a point higher than the gasoline-powered Ram 1500 that CR had tested earlier. It is the second consecutive year that the publication had advised consumers to purchase the Ram 1500 over other half-ton competitors.

In a statement to Automotive News, Doug Betts, Chrysler's senior vice president for quality, said the back-to-back selection by CR "is evidence the Ram Truck team is not going to stand still. We're committed to continuous improvement in all aspects of quality and performance in our products and the Ram is no exception."

Dirty Diesel Customs Discusses Ram EcoDiesel 1500 Tops Consumer Reports Full-Sized Pickup Truck Ratings

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel climbed to the top of Consumer Reports’ full-size pickup truck ratings with an impressive performance in the organization’s fuel economy tests.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/08/2014 -- The EcoDiesel (82 point overall road test score) turned in a best-in-class fuel economy of 20 mpg overall and 27 mpg on the highway, to help it score better than the previously tested Ram 1500 V8 (81) regular gas version and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT(80).

"These are about the same fuel-economy numbers that we typically see in a mid-sized SUV. The Ram is currently the only truck to offer turbo-diesel technology. It will be interesting to see what impact it will have on the half-ton truck market," said Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports engineers found the EcoDiesel to be as luxurious and refined as the previously tested V8 version. The EcoDiesel remains fully capable of doing dirty work when duty calls. A unique coil-spring rear suspension gives it a smooth ride, and the interior is whisper-quiet.

Consumer Reports noted some telltale diesel clatter at idle and low speeds, but the engine noise is well-hushed when cruising. Some buyers may like hearing the distinctive diesel engine note. The continued interior and powertrain improvements make the Ram a particularly well-rounded choice for most consumers.

Updated test results for the Ram EcoDiesel are available today at http://www.ConsumerReports.org

In other tests, the redesigned Toyota Highlander Hybrid's impressive performance earned it the top spot in Consumer Reports midsized SUV ratings. Consumer Reports engineers found it refined and comfortable, loaded with creature comforts, and the ability to tow 3,500 pounds. Yet it gets a very thrifty 25 mpg overall, which is the same as many small SUVs and midsized sedans.

The Hybrid takes the smooth, powerful V6 from the regular Highlander and adds a hybrid battery pack and three electric motors, increasing horsepower by 10, to 280. In place of the conventional six-speed automatic transmission, the Hybrid uses a continuously variable transmission, which is well-matched to the engine. That combo delivers 25 mpg overall, which is 25 percent better than the regular Highlander's 20. Power delivery is smooth. Transitions between electric power and the gas engine are seamless. And the Hybrid can usually propel itself on electric power up to about 35 mph.

The new Highlander also handles better, with a steadier ride and reduced body lean in corners. When pushed to its handling limits, a well-tuned stability-control system kept things secure. Energy-saving regenerative brakes make the pedal a little touchy, but stopping distances were good.

Testers were impressed with Toyota's new infotainment system, which has simple menus that make it easy to select functions, as well as knobs for volume and tuning. It also has excellent voice controls and one of the most comprehensive Bluetooth streaming-audio interfaces Consumer Reports has seen.

Complete tests results of the redesigned Toyota Highlander Hybrid, as well as additional reports for the recently tested Chevrolet Suburban("Very Good"), Chevrolet Tahoe ("Very Good"), and Ford C-Max Hybrid("Very Good"), are available online at http://www.ConsumerReports.org and in the October issue of Consumer Reports, on newsstands starting August 28, 2014.

Consumer Reports' testing procedures are the most comprehensive of any U.S. publication or Web site. More than 50 individual tests are performed on every vehicle, including evaluations of braking, handling, comfort, convenience, safety, and fuel economy. Roughly 6,000 miles of general driving and evaluations are racked up on each test car during the testing process. CR buys all its test cars anonymously from dealers. Other reviewers base their evaluations on press cars that are hand-picked by the automakers.

Consumer Reports is the world's largest independent product-testing organization. Using its more than 50 labs, auto test center, and survey research center, the nonprofit rates thousands of products and services annually. Founded in 1936, Consumer Reports has over 8 million subscribers to its magazine, website and other publications.
In the Age of Expensive Pickup Trucks, One Can Still Get a Cool One for Under $30,000

Pickup trucks are expensive, far more now than they used to be, with the sticker prices of more well-optioned rigs easily topping $70,000. Even average, midlevel versions can go for nearly $50,000 when one starts adding options.

Sylvan Lake, AB -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/03/2014 -- The folks at Ram, however, think a good pickup doesn't have to be so expensive — and to prove it, they built the 2014 Ram 1500 Tradesman/Express. Take a Tradesman work truck, add a few appearance items, give it a Hemi V-8 engine and — voila: an attractive, two-door, sporty pickup that just happens to be the least-expensive V-8-powered truck in America. What do they get for the money they do spend? Not much, it turns out — not even some of the basics that people have come to expect in modern vehicles, though that hasn't stopped the Express trim from being massively popular with Ram customers. Compare the 2013 and 2014 Ram 1500s here.

Styling

The Ram light-duty truck got an update for the 2013 model year, making it one of the most attractive pickups on the market. The Express is the base version of the truck, so there isn't much flash. Instead, Ram has made a few cost-careful cosmetic choices to emphasize sportiness. The Express is limited to a few body styles: only regular or quad cab with the 6-foot-4-inch bed, or crew cab with the shorter 5-foot-7-inch bed. The least expensive version is the one I drove: a standard cab with the regular bed, in 4x2 configuration. Despite its being cheap, it looks complete — body-colored bumpers front and back, blacked-out trim, fog lamps and big 20-inch painted wheels don't make it look like a stripped-down model. There's very little chrome for a pickup, but it has a custom sport-truck look to it that's fantastic. Unfortunately, the Express is also built to a price, so things like a spray-in bedliner and a trailer hitch receiver are extra-cost options.

How It Drives

The best part about the Express is what comes under the hood — a 395-horsepower, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. It also pumps out 410 pounds-feet of torque, good enough to lay down some massive stripes if smoky burnouts are theyr thing. Around town, it means instant acceleration and maximum bass through the truck's exhaust. A recent back-to-back drive with the much more expensive Ford F-150 Tremor and its twin-turbo V-6 engine gave the crown of best-sounding truck to the Ram, hands-down, thanks to that traditional V-8 rumble.

The six-speed automatic shifts with authority but feels clunky and outdated — the optional eight-speed would've been smoother, more fuel efficient and would have made the 1500 Express quicker off the line, as well. My test truck came with a 3.92:1 rear axle and a limited-slip differential. The former made acceleration a bit quicker than it might have been, the latter helped put the Hemi's power down in slippery conditions. Not that the 1500 feels slow by any means; all that power in the smallest, lightest pickup in the Ram stable means the truck flies when they ask it to. It also helps the brakes haul the truck to a stop with considerable force.

Handling is typical for a truck, meaning it's not going to win any autocross events, but the thick steering wheel is grippy and confidence-inspiring. What stands out much more is how well the 1500 rides — choppier than theyr average family sedan, of course, but much more relaxed and controlled than most pickups over broken pavement. There's no bouncing around in here and no unusual chassis movements, just a steady, comfortable ride for three people. It's quiet, too, keeping the Ram's occupants very well insulated against wind and road noise.

Being a pickup, the 1500 Express tows and hauls easily, especially with the big, torquey V-8. The truck is rated to tow 9,250 pounds thanks to the 3.92 gear, which is more than enough to haul a boat, a pair of Jet Skis, a camper trailer, even an automobile. Fuel economy is fair for a two-wheel-drive, V-8 pickup, rated 14/20/16 mpg city/highway/combined. My week with the truck averaged a spot-on 16 mpg in an even mix of city and highway driving.

Interior

Haul theyrself up into the cab (there are no side steps) and they'll plant theyrself on a big bench seat — three across, with the center position featuring a fold-down seatback that becomes an armrest, cupholder and storage bin. The driver and passenger seats are plenty comfortable, but I wouldn't want to test that center seat: Along with a lack of legroom, one has to contend with a thick backrest that just doesn't look like it would be comfortable for anything more than the quickest jaunt down the street.

At an as-tested price of $28,380 including destination, this is an inexpensive truck — and it's easy to see where the cost came out. There's almost nothing in the interior besides the aforementioned bench seat, which can be optionally clad in cloth rather than vinyl.

Stepping inside this truck is like stepping back in time to how trucks used to be: crank windows, manual door locks, manual seats, fixed rear window glass, manual climate control, a column shifter, manual side mirrors and very little in the way of creature comforts. My truck did feature satellite radio as part of a popular equipment group, but the only things "automatic" on the truck are the headlights and the transmission. It will take only a few times having to stretch all the way across the cabin to unlock the passenger door for a friend, or wishing they could reach that door while driving to roll down the window on a hot day, to make they realize that for just $735 more, the Power and Remote Entry Group with power mirrors, locks, windows and a remote key fob would make living with the Express massively easier.

Despite the lack of equipment, the cab is very well-done. The latest Ram pickup interiors are the best in Chrysler history, by far. Even in this stripped-down, entry-level model, material and assembly quality is noticeably good. About the only thing to complain about is the drabness of it all in diesel gray, but with the money they've saved getting the Express over a more expensive truck, they can easily spring for some aftermarket leather seat coverings in matching body-colored red to spice things up.

Ergonomics & Electronics

There isn't much to talk about in the Express in terms of electronics. There's a standard trip computer in the gauge cluster, which itself is clear and easy to read, but there isn't even a CD player in there. There is, however, a media hub containing an aux jack, USB port and 12-volt auxiliary power outlet in the fold-down console. In my tester, satellite radio was present thanks to an option package, but there was no Chrysler Uconnect, the company's excellent multimedia system, at this price. Again, it feels like a throwback to a simpler time, but it does offer an interesting palette for customization.

Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the Ram 1500 good in every test except the roof-crush strength, where it was rated marginal.

There's not much in the way of extra safety equipment in the 1500 Express, but the basics are here, like front- and side-impact airbags and stability control. The 2014 Ram 1500 has been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from which it got a mixture of four and five stars throughout the various tests. See the results of the crash tests here and a list of the 1500's safety equipment here.

Value in Its Class

The Ram 1500 Express justifies its existence right here, in the value category. As equipped, my truck cost $28,380 including a rather hefty $1,195 destination charge (a Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG luxury sedan has a destination charge of $925 and it was shipped here from Germany on a boat, not put on a train from a factory in suburban Detroit). Ram has adjusted prices over the course of this past year, however, with my example now costing $28,630 as-tested rather than the $28,380 seen on its window sticker when I had it.

That's a pretty good price for a V-8 truck with all the basics they need to get by, but as stated earlier, checking the box for the Power and Remote Entry package still brings they in under $30,000 and makes the Express a much more pleasant truck to live with on a daily basis. Adding the eight-speed automatic would also be a good decision, but strangely it also eliminates theyr ability to opt for a cloth seat instead of the standard vinyl. Choose theyr own options on one here.

The Ford F-150 has an STX trim level that does much of what the 1500 Express does: provide an entry-level, relatively inexpensive sporty truck for theynger buyers with limited means. It's more expensive than the 1500 Express and does not include a standard V-8 engine, but it does have more standard equipment, like power windows and locks. Optioning one up to match some of the features of the 1500 Express (V-8 engine, 20-inch wheels, fog lights) does push it well above $32,000, however, giving the value advantage to the Ram.

Over at Chevrolet, there really is no equivalent entry-level sport truck — it's all about work at this low price. A regular-cab 4x2 with the 2WT package is roughly equivalent, but like the Ford it does not include a V-8 engine or 20-inch wheels. It does have a more advanced electronics suite, however, with Chevrolet MyLink and satellite radio standard, along with more power equipment than the Ram offers. Neither the Ford nor the Chevy can match the Ram's 5.7-liter V-8's power and torque, however.
