June Is Men's Health Month: Urgent Care at Sunset Walk-in Healthcare Is Onboard

Listen up Men! Sunset Walk-In Healthcare Celebrates Men's Health Month and Educates Urgent Care Patients about the Importance of Regular and Appropriate Health Screening.

West Hollywood, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/03/2015 -- The state of health of men in America is in crisis. Considering the advancement in medicine, technological improvement in health screening and the level of preventive care coverage in the past few years this should not be the case.

Men have shorter life spans than women and face higher mortality rates than women for 9 of the 10 leading causes of deaths and are the victims of over 92% of workplace deaths each year. In 1920, women lived on average one year longer than men. Today, men, on average, die almost five years earlier than women. Yet, women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventive services than men. By the age of 100, women outnumber men eight to one. Basically, on average, 'American men live sicker and die younger than American women' states Dr. David Gremillion of Men's Health Network.

It is conjectured that poor health education, lack of awareness and culturally induced behaviors are the cause of the steadily deteriorating health of men in America. Of the factors quoted for this rather silent national health crisis, the culturally induced behaviors in men may be one of the most important of those cited according to John Foster, MD, [aka Dr. John] of Sunset Walk-In Healthcare and Occupational Medicine Clinic. "I believe that health education is ample around the primary health risks, however, men seem to think they don't have to act on that information until they have some chronic sign or symptom that just won't go away. Unfortunately, at that point, disease is underway and it takes more to get it under control. So, the old adage, an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure hits the target" says Dr. John "Through my urgent care practice I strive to keep my patients informed and advised on any relevant screening they may need based on my evaluation, even if they are visiting me for something unrelated. In this way, men are better equipped to make informed decisions about screening and testing available to them. We move from talking about it to taking action on it."

The best advice we can give men is to get their annual physical examination, talk to their doctor, visit the urgent care and take preventative steps advised to maintain a strong and healthy life.

Sunset Walk-in Healthcare Celebrates World Immunization Week: April 24-30, 2015

World Immunization Week – observed globally in the last week of April (24-30) promotes the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease.

West Hollywood, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/27/2015 -- Immunization is the Best Protection Throughout Life

Immunization is generally regarded as one of the most successful and cost-effective health interventions preventing between 2 and 3 million deaths every year. Immunizations protect children against diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, polio and measles, pneumonia and rotavirus diarrhea, two [2] of the biggest killers of children under 5. Today adolescents and adults can be protected against life-threatening diseases such as influenza, meningitis, and cancers in particular, cervical and liver, due to new and sophisticated vaccines.

Yet in 2013 alone, one [1] in five [5] children, an estimated 21.8 million infants did not receive lifesaving vaccines. This has created a serious immunization gap. There are many reasons for the lack of appropriate immunizations including an adequate supply of vaccines, lack of access to health services and inaccurate information about the safety of immunizations. Lastly there is insufficient political and financial support for public awareness and education.

Closing the Immunization Gap

World Immunization Week 2015 is aimed at revitalizing efforts around the globe as a call to action to improve public awareness, the demand for immunization by communities, and effective vaccination delivery services. Organizations around the world participate in spreading the word that getting immunized is your best shot at good health.

"Immunizations are important throughout life. Adults traveling to foreign countries should get the to get the facts about their destination before they travel. Many countries have serious and life threatening diseases present in the environment which people may contact during their travels. These diseases can usually be prevented by readily available vaccines and medications. People headed to exotic destinations should get the recommended immunizations in advance of their travel." says John Foster, MD a certified Travel Immunization specialist.

In an effort to prevent millions of deaths by 2020, this year's campaign emphasizes closing the widening immunization gap and reaching equity in immunization levels as outlined in the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP). The Plan was endorsed by the 194 Member States of the World Health Assembly in May 2012.

Sunset Walk-in Healthcare Annouces New General Practice Department

New General Practice medical department at Sunset Walk-In Healthcare is now accepting new patients who need a primary care physician [PCP] on their medical insurance plans.

West Hollywood, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/14/2014 -- John Foster, MD, owner of Sunset Walk-In Healthcare and Occupational Medicine Clinic announced today that he is now accepting new patients through his recently opened General Practice department.

In direct response to requests from numerous Urgent Care patients at Sunset Walk-In Healthcare, Dr. Foster has opened a General Practice department for patients who want to list him as their primary care physician [PCP] on their insurance plans. "After careful consideration to the many requests I receive from my patient population I believe opening a General Practice department at Sunset Walk-In Healthcare is an important addition for local patients. My goal is to respond quickly and effectively to medical needs in the West Hollywood, Hollywood and Beverly Hills neighborhoods to the best of my ability and the addition of this new department is a big step in that direction," states Dr. Foster.

Dr. Foster is credentialed with most PPO Plans, Covered California Plans and Medicare and is accepting new patients now in the General Practice department. Patients interested in listing Dr. Foster as their PCP are encouraged to check their medical provider network [MPN] in advance to ensure that he is listed as a participating provider in their specific network. When in doubt patients are advised to contact the customer service number listed on their healthcare cards to check on Dr. Foster's credentials with their specific MPN.

"Our new General Practice patients are reminded to notify the front desk that they are registering in the General Practice department and state that they want Dr. Foster as their PCP" says Lissa Darpinian, office manager at Sunset Walk-In Healthcare.

The walk-in practice model in place at Sunset Walk-In Healthcare will remain the same enabling patients to visit the clinic without an appointment. That practice model is extended to the General Practice department as well. According to Dr. Foster, patients enjoy not having to schedule an appointment to be seen in a timely fashion when they are injured or ill. Although, patients are not discouraged from making appointments as a matter of convenience either on the telephone or through the online patient portal,it is not required.

All other patients will be seen as usual through our well established Urgent Care department at Sunset Walk-In Healthcare.

Sunset Walk-in Healthcare Offers Affordable Flu Shots

$20.00 flu shots available for cash paying patients. Sunset Walk-In Healthcare accepts most insurance plans including Medicare.

West Hollywood, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/10/2014 -- John Foster, MD said patients do not need an appointment to receive their flu shots. Flu shots are available during normal clinic hours Monday through Saturday and are covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B.

The CDC recommends a yearly flu shot for everyone 6 months of age and older. There are different flu viruses; however, the 2014/15 seasonal flu vaccine is designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research suggests will cause the most illness during the current flu season. "Again we remind our neighbors to make it your business to avoid getting the flu and spreading it to family, co-workers and others by getting their flu shots now" said Dr. Foster. The timing of the flu is unpredictable and can vary year to year. However, seasonal flu activity usually peaks in January or February, but it can occur as early as October and as late as May.

"We have been giving flu vaccines to residents of West Hollywood since late August", says Dr. Foster. He noted that the calls for flu shots have increased since the first October. October is a very good month to get vaccines for the whole family to ensure they are protected before flu season begins.

Flu vaccines are designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research suggests will be the most common during the upcoming season. Three kinds of flu viruses commonly circulate among people today: Influenza A (H1N1) viruses, influenza A (H3N2) viruses, and influenza B viruses. Vaccines that give protection against three viruses are called trivalent vaccines. Dr. Foster recommends the trivalent vaccine.

If you do get sick, there are drugs that can treat flu illness. They are called antiviral drugs and they can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They also can prevent serious flu-related complications, like pneumonia. For more information about antiviral drugs, visit Treatment (Antiviral Drugs)http://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/antivirals/index.htm or contact your local physician.

Sunset Walk-in Healthcare Promotes Adult Immunizations-Vaccines

Sunset Walk-In Healthcare offers flu vaccines at a special cash price to local residents and employers through May 2015. Dr. Foster advises adults to review all recommended immunizations on a regular basis, stating that vaccines are not just for kids.

West Hollywood, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/22/2014 -- National Adult Immunizations Awareness Week is August 24th-30th, 2014. Vaccines are an important step in protecting adults against several serious and sometimes deadly, diseases. John Foster, MD has joined with Center for Disease Control [CDC] partners nationwide in promoting August 24th through August 30th as adult immunizations awareness week and is prepared to provide immunization services to the community.

Vaccines are recommended throughout one's life based on: age, lifestyle and occupation, locations of travel, medical conditions and previous vaccines. The CDC updates vaccines recommended for adults each year based on the latest research on vaccine safety, effectiveness, and patterns of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Vaccines are recommended for adults to prevent serious diseases such as influenza, shingles, pneumonia caused by pneumococcal bacteria, hepatitis, and whooping cough. Many of these diseases are common in the U.S. and all adults even healthy ones can benefit from vaccination.

- Some vaccines prevent cancer. Hepatitis B vaccine can prevent liver cancer that can develop after developing chronic hepatitis B. The HPV vaccine can prevent cervical and other types of cancer caused by human papillomavirus.

- Every year, thousands of adults in the U.S. needlessly suffer, are hospitalized, and even die from diseases that could be prevented by vaccines.

Vaccination is important because it not only protects the person receiving the vaccine, but also helps prevent the spread of certain diseases to those who are most vulnerable to serious complications, such as infants and young children, elderly, and those with chronic conditions and weakened immune systems.

"Unfortunately, far too few adults are receiving the recommended vaccines, leaving themselves and their loved ones vulnerable to serious diseases" says Dr. Foster.
- Encourage the athlete to notify coach and trainers if they do get injured in a game.

Background:

The following statistics were taken from the recent Safe Kids [www.safekids.org] survey of 1,000 young athletes seventh through 10th grades, 1,000 coaches and 1,000 parents:

- 42% of players report that they have hidden or downplayed an injury during a game so they could keep playing; 62% say they know someone else who has done so.

- 54% say they have played injured and 70% of those kids say they told a coach or parent that they were hurt. Top reasons given for playing injured: it wasn't that bad (18%); couldn't let the team down (13%); didn't want to be benched (12%).

- 33% say they have been injured as a result of dirty play from an opponent; 28% agree that it is normal to commit hard fouls and play rough to "send a message" during a game.

- 53% of coaches say they have felt pressure from a parent or player to put an athlete back in a game if the child has been injured.

Dr. Foster says to pay attention to the possibility of a sports related injury throughout the season and seek medical care when necessary.
